Opis:
From military vehicle industry point of view the process of designing vehicle armour solution from the requirements to the field for any specific customer requirements consists of following steps: selection, optimization, verification, design, manufacturing and fielding. The process is based on the knowledge and database of pre-evaluated solutions and technologies and true understanding of customer needs and expectations. After the selection of the specific customer solution is made, the process is essentially disconnected from the armour development. In the project phase the armour tests are made for solution optimization and verification purposes only.

Opis:
The presented experimental investigation, aimed at verification of defeat mechanisms against small-calibre projectiles, provided by 4-mm-thick perforated plates with different material- and geometrical properties, was performed. A regular pattern of punched holes in steel plates increases the possibility of asymmetrical contact between the plate and projectiles which may cause threat destabilization, rotation or fragmentation depending on the impact position. Three tested armour configurations comprise the super-bainitic high-hardness Pavise™ SBS 600P armour steel plates perforated by elongated holes of size 4 x 12 mm (the first configuration), the martensitic high-hardness Mars® 300P steel plates perforated by circular holes with a diameter of 5 mm (in the second configuration); and in the third configuration, the martensitic Mars® 300 plates perforated by oblong holes (4 x 10 mm) were used. The performed impact tests proved that the tested add-on plates assured high protection against the impact of 7.62 x 51 .308 Win P80 hard-core armour piercing (AP) projectiles. It was also observed that the plates caused similar mechanisms of bullet failure.

Opis:
The paper concerns research and development on modern, ceramic-based, protective layers used in the armour of tanks, combat vehicles and aeroplanes. A task of ceramic panels is reduction and dispersion of localized kinetic energy before a projectile or its fragment approaches the interior of protected object. The numerical investigations have been performed to determine the ballistic resistance of ceramic/metal panels subjected to projectile impact. The impact of the 7.62mm armour-piercing projectile on the ceramic elements backed by a metal plate was analyzed. The tested panels were composed of a ceramic layer (Al2O3, SiC or B4C) and a metal layer (7017 aluminium alloy, Armox 500T steel or Ti6Al-4 titanium alloy). Different shapes of ceramic elements were analyzed, including hemispheres and pyramids, with respect to standard flat tiles. The influence of the impact point location was also taken into considerations. The computer simulations were performed with the Finite Element Method implemented in LS-DYNA code. Full 3D models of the projectile and targets were developed with strain rate and temperature dependent material constitutive relations. The conclusions presented in the paper can be applied to develop modern impact protection panels in which the appropriate balance between the mass and protection level must be accomplished.

In the paper there are presented general parameters of shaped charge projectiles (SC) and explosively formed projectiles (EFP), designed for destroying of armed vehicles, and parameters of explosive reactive armours (ERA), which significantly increase capability of protection of rolled homogeneous armour (RHA) against piercing by these projectiles. There are shown examples of destruction of tanks not protected by the ERA. Their parameters are presented on the base of ERAWA-1 and ERAWA-2 Polish reactive cassettes for PT-91 Hard tank. There are described the following requirements: capability of protection of ERAWA-1 and ERAWA-2 cassettes as a result of reaction in the static test of shaped charge projectiles PG-7 and 125 mm BK-14M, effect in the dynamic test of 125 mm BM-15 projectile that pierces through due to its kinetic energy, and resistance to detonation of the cassettes fired by 12.7×107 mm AP B-32 projectiles. There are demonstrated results of the resistance to detonation of the neighboring ERAWA cassettes in case of detonation of the central cassette in the panel. There are presented results of test of resistance to detonation of the ERAWA cassettes while burning on them flammable material (gasoline, napalm), and resistance to detonation of the cassettes dropped from 3 m height onto a hard substrate of RHA. The safe distance for humans after detonation of the projectile and ERAWA-2 cassette was also tested.

Opis:
During ongoing conflicts around the world, some of the most dangerous threats are rocket-propelled grenades. They are light, easy to use and cheap, and their penetration reaches 900 mm of armoured RHA steel. Therefore, in many experimental and numerical laboratories there are researches of different, in aspect of shape, dimensions and used material, types of rod armours protecting against such a threat carried out. This kind of research must be confirmed in the last part of design by appropriate field tests. However, at the beginning of the design process, it is important to find a fast method of testing the developed solutions in a manner, which allows us to observe and measure as many process parameters as possible. One of such tests is research with the use of simplified models built in an appropriate scale. Small dimensions and simple construction result in the fact that the cost of manufacturing of models is much lower, and time is shorter. Tests on the simplified models are also possible to be carried out in laboratory conditions, what reduces the costs and makes the measurements of physical properties easier. The article describes experimental investigations of the impact of a simplified missile with a shape charge jet head model into a thick plate and steel rods. The construction of a missile, the used equipment and apparatus as well as the proceedings of the experiment are presented. The paper provides information about the structure of FE model and both initial and boundary conditions of the examined system. The results of numerical analysis are presented and compared with the results from experimental tests.

Full 3D models of the projectile and targets were developed with strain, rate and temperature dependent material constitutive relations. The models of the projectile, ceramic and aluminium alloy targets were validated with utilization of the experimental data found in literature. The obtained results confirm, the preliminary presumptions, that the shape of the front surface can significant role in the overall ballistic resistance of the panel. Particularly projectile-target initial contact area st to be important factor as showed by impact point location analysis. The conclusions presented in this paper can be applied to develop modern impact protection panels where the appropriate balance between the mass and protection level must be accomplished.

Opis:
Monolithic nitrocellulose and cellulose (NC-C) composites solidified with starch were used in a model reactive armour with steel plates. The acceleration ability of the gaseous reaction products of composites was examined by the use of X-ray technique. The effectiveness of the reactive armour containing NC-C composites in weakening the ability of jet penetration was assessed experimentally on the basis of the size of holes in the steel plates and effects of the impact of jet particles on a steel plate located under the armour. It has been shown that the size of the holes in the driven plate increases and the degree of penetration of the “witness” plate is reduced with the decrease of the angle of jet impact. The modified Gurney model was applied to simulate the process of driving steel plates in the reactive armor with a layer of NC-C composite. The model was verified by using the results of X-ray recording of plates driven by the reaction products. The effectiveness of reactive armors with NC-C composites in weakening the penetration ability of shaped charge jets was evaluated in a manner based on the results of theoretical modeling

Opis:
Monolithic nitrocellulose-cellulose composites were prepared by separately cross-linking the mixed precursors (NC + C) with hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI). The syntheses were optimised according to the component mass ratios, HDI, solvent and catalyst concentration. The concentrations of the reactants and cure catalyst are the most important factors. The general method of synthesis involved dissolving HDI and the catalyst in methylene chloride and then wetting an NC-C mixture with the solution. The resulting mixture was placed in a sealed box for cross-linking at room temperature. Finally the solvent was evaporated at ca. 40 C. The NC-C composites obtained were characterized using TG/DTA and sensitivity to friction and drop weight impact, and were used as energetic materials in reactive armour elements.

Opis:
The bar or net screens are ones of the methods to increase protection level of military vehicle crews against antitank grenades fired from RPG-7. Their task is to prevent generation of the shaped charge jet. The probability of vehicle's protection level when applying such types of screens depends on their structure - percentage share of the open space, i.e. space for which the flying grenade will not touch the structure element with its fuse, but it will be destructed. The two mechanisms are here mainly used: short circuit in the fuse circuit, deformation of conical section of the shaped charge warhead. This article presents analysis of structure of the bar and net screens due to share of the open space, for various impact angle of grenade in elevation and azimuth. The following were changed: thickness and width of bars and distance between them, thickness of wire and shape of individual net mesh. The solution of bar screen with the lowest weight and grenade destruction ability was selected. This solution was compared with the net screen offered currently on the market For the selected solutions, for angles increasing in elevation, up to 300 value, the bar screen has the larger open space than net screen. For angles in azimuth, the bar screen has larger open space for the entire range of angles. The bar screen is heavier by 50-60% when compared to the selected net screens, but their operation costs are lower. They are repaired in field conditions

Opis:
Small arms ammunition which may impact personal armour and is deemed to be realistic as a threat by the user, may not always comply with armour test standards. In many cases there are good practical reasons why such realistic ammunition is not included in standards, including availability and variability. However, when using some test standards, approximate equivalents have been made between realistic ammunition and those levels available within the standards, for example, the use of 30.06 AP M2 as an alternative to 7.62 × 54R B32 API. Some weapon systems not represented within test standards, are not possible to be replaced by any test level listed in any test standard. For example the Heckler and Koch MP7 and FN P90, which are positioned in performance between handgun and rifle levels. Many armour specifiers and users will make minor modifications to levels in armour standards in order to allow the test method to be valid, but with slightly different ammunition types included within a specific level. For example NIJ 0101.06 Level III+ is often specified usually for materials-based reasons. Finally the paper will introduce how bullet surrogate projectiles may be an answer to some of the issues previously highlighted.

The paper presents mechanical and physical properties measured in static conditions, and some properties determined in dynamic conditions, of plates of new nano-composite bainite-austenite (NANOS-BA) steel to be used for construction of armours. Firing tests of NANOS-BA steel plates fixed on a base plate of RHA (Rolled Homogenous Armour), Armox 500T and Armox 600T steel, carried out by means of 12.7 mm B-32 projectiles have demonstrated that in the conditions of tests, NANOS-BA steel shows better protective properties than 500BHN and 600BHN – grade commercial plates. NANOS-BA steel plate of minimum 5 mm thickness has protected Armox 500T and Armox 600T plate from piercing. Quantitative effects were assessed of firing the NANOS-BA steel plates of 50 x 50 mm and 100 x 100 mm surface dimensions, and thickness in the range of 5÷10 mm, as well as sets of the NANOS-BA steel plates of 100 x 100 x (4÷8) mm dimensions, arranged in layers on the base plate. It was determined that ballistic limit V50 for NANOS-BA plate of 6.0 mm thickness, for the 7.62 x 51 mm M61 AP (Armour Piercing) projectile, amounts to 797±10 m/s. Based on the analysis which compared results of tests carried out with the application of various parameters it was estimated that the value of V50 obtained for NANOS-BA steel is higher than the parameters of the highest grade steel plates offered in the global market. The tests imply that NANOS-BA steel is a prospective material for armour construction which can enable to reduce weight of armours and/or to improve their protective parameters in comparison with the presently used structures. Due to very high protective capability, monolithic plates of NANOS-BA steel can be used as one of the layers of the composite armour.

Opis:
The paper presents a numerical study of the three layer composite panels impacted by an AP (Armor Piercing) 7.62x51mm projectile. The standard panel is built with aluminum and Al2O3 ceramic plate. The studied model, however, consists of the same aluminum plate but the ceramic one is surrounded by a steel packet. The problem has been solved with the usage of the modelling and simulation methods as well as finite elements method implemented in LS-DYNA software. Space discretization for each option was built with three dimension elements guaranteeing satisfying accuracy of the calculations. For material behaviour simulation, specific models including the influence of the strain rate and temperature changes were considered. Steel projectile and aluminum plate material were described by Johnson-Cook model and ceramic target by Johnson-Holmquist model. In the studied panels, the area surrounding back edges was supported by a rigid wall. The obtained results show interesting properties of the new structures considering their ballistic resistance. The ballistic protection of a three layer panel under the WC projectile impact is indentified. Panels containing the ceramic plate surrounded at each side by a steel packet plate are stronger. However, this difference reaches only the level of 2.4% regardless erosion parameters. Definitely technological complication and an area density mass increase cannot balance a small improvement of ballistic protection. However, this kind of panel is not suggested as a useful solution. Further investigations are suggested in order to analyze an influence of initial ceramic compression. The results of those numerical simulations can be used for designing of modern armour protection systems against hard kinetic projectiles.
