Opis:
The striped field mouse, Apodemus agrarius, is one of the most abundant species among small rodents in Poland. It occurs commonly across the whole country inhabiting diverse ecological niches as meadows, farmlands, enclaves of natural habitats in cities. Wide range of ecological tolerance of this species makes it often the host, reservoir and vector of many pathogens: viruses, bacteria, protozoa, helminths and arthropods. The aim of the present study was to carry out a qualitative and quantitative analysis of the fleas community and intestinal tapeworms of A. agrarius in suburban environment of Lublin (eastern Poland). In studied population three species of Siphonaptera class i.e. Ctenophthalmus agyrtes, Nosopsyllus fasciatus, Hystrichopsylla talpae and one intestine Cestoda species Hymenolepis diminuta were identified. The results of our researches confirmed role of A. agrarius as the reservoir for tapeworms and host for fleas in urban environment. High level of the prevalence of fleas and tapeworms in rodents indicates the significant degree of contamination and can cause an epidemiological threat for human’s health.

Opis:
Introduction. Dobrava-Belgrade virus (DOBV) is one of the emerging pathogens which have been reported during the last decades in Europe and have attracted the attention of researchers. The course of infection among humans may have a varied course – from the completely asymptomatic to the more severe forms, such as haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS). DOBV is hosted and carried by rodents like Apodemus flavicollis or A. agrarius, which occur commonly in Europe. Objective. To-date, orthohantaviruses have been reported in Poland, both in humans and animals, but detailed countryscale studies have not yet been carried out. The aim of the study was molecular characterization of a strain which was found in A. flavicollis in south-eastern Poland. Materials and method. The phylogenetic analysis of the first Dobrava-Belgrade virus found in A. flavicollis in the subcarpathian region of south-eastern Poland, presented in this study, was performed after virus proliferation in cell culture and sequencing of specific PCR products. Results. Based on genetic sequences of fragments of three segments (S, M and L), the isolated virus was assigned to the Dobrava genotype, taking into consideration the most current classification of the DOBV species. Conclusions. The Dobrava-Belgrade virus strain isolated from A. flavicollis in the subcarpathian region of south-eastern Poland, has been molecularly characterized and assigned to Dobrava genotype, thereby the occurrence of that genotype in Poland has been confirmed by molecular techniques.

Opis:
Ecology of Ixodes ricinus collected on black-striped field mouse (Apodemus agrarius) was studied in the lowland ecosystems. During the study period (1986-1991), 1483 specimens of A. agrarius were examined in southern Slovakia and 1319 larvae and nymphs were collected from hosts. The seasonal pattern - bimodal (peak in spring and autumn) - was distinct for larvae. Both prevalence and abundance of tick infestation of A. agrarius by nymphs were low. Prevailing material of nymphs was collected from May (pooled data from all years) on mature hosts. There were significantly higher infestation in mature males than in females as well as significantly higher tick infestation of mature hosts than immature ones. Higher abundance of tick infestation of A. agrarius in fields is probably influenced by great spatial mobility of hosts and by import of ticks from landscape verdure.

This is the first observation of that species in Poland. In Polish fauna, Apodemus flavicollis proved to be a new host of mites belonging to Demodecidae. All specimens of D. rosus have been found in the mouse oral cavity

Opis:
Localization of three species of mites belonging to Demodecidae family (Acari, Prostigmata) in striped field mouse Apodemus agrarius (Pallas, 1771) was analyzed. Occurrence of Demodex agrarii Bukva, 1994, D. arvicolae apodemi Hirst, 1918 and D. huttereri Mertens, Lukoschus et Nutting, 1983 was established. This is the first time when D. huttereri was found in Poland. Earlier cases of occurrence of that particular species were only recorded for striped field mice in Germany. Out of these three species, the predominant one was D.a. apodemi found in 78% of studied mice. This species inhabited hair follicles of common hairs; however, D.a. apodemi significantly demonstrated topographical preferences, and its occurrence was mostly limited to the head (74%) and genital-anal region (18%). In the remaining hairy body parts, only individual specimens were observed. D. agrarii, which has been associated solely with external auditory meatus, was observed in the ear region in 8% of the hosts. D. huttereri, which inhabits Meibomian glands, was observed in the region of eyelids in 6% hosts. In striped field mouse, demodectic mites demonstrate significant topographical preferences that are conditioned not only by tissue/topical specificity, but also by transmission ways between hosts.
