Opis:
This paper presents new data derived from field sampling and from a thorough description of lamprophyres located in southeastern Altai and northwestern Mongolia in terms of their mineralogy, textures, and chemical composition. The swarms of alkaline mafic dikes in the area coexist with granosyenite-monzodiorite and gabbro-dolerite intrusions and spatially coincide with an ore district of Sb-Hg, Ag-Sb, Ni-Co-As, Cu-Mo-W, and CaF2 hydrothermal mineralization. All lamprophyres belong to the Early Mesozoic Chuya complex formed in an intracontinental enviroment. Their distribution and orientation is controlled by two large fault zones. The Chuya dikes were investigated at two localities, namely, Yustyd and South-Chuya. The Yustyd lamprophyres intrude Middle-Upper Devonian black shale of the Yustyd depression. At South Chuya, lamprophyres, together with the Tarkhata granosyenite-monzodiorite complex, are hosted by Cambrian and Ordovician metamorphic rocks of the South-Chuya Range. Ar-Ar (phlogopite) and U-Pb (SHRIMP, zircon) ages of the lamprophyre dikes indicate long and continuous period of the formation of the Chuya complex (250-235 Ma). Major- and trace-element compositions of the lamprophyres from both localities and of the syenite indicate their origin from the same magma source. The textures and structures of the lamprophyre and plutonic rocks, their mineral assemblages and the chemistry of the rock-forming minerals provide clues to the evolution of the parental alkaline mafic magma and fluid regime.

Opis:
The geopark Altai has a set of unique geological, geographical, and archaeological objects. Its basis is made by geological space with a specific relief that plays an important role, and on certain sites, it takes the first place in comparison with other types of objects. The peculiar feature of the geopark Altai is that in its territory there is a landscape connection among archaeological, geological, and geographical objects, which at certain sites is penetrated by mental and cultural fluids causing a deep interest of tourists in this territory. In this regard, the authors consider the relief as an object of cognitive, educational, and practical activities of the geopark Altai. Therefore, the following tasks were set up: to find a site for the realization of several types of activities by the geopark and to develop a theoretical scientific and a popular science base for their implementation. As a result of the work done, the authors allocated the site within the boundaries of the geopark Altai where modern dynamics of the relief are characterized by the maximum speed. On this site, it is possible to recreate the processes that created the relief in the geological past and to study these processes now. The specifics of weather and climatic conditions in this region made its relief very important for economic activity of the population inhabiting this territory. Therefore, as of today, the study of the condition of certain surface sites and forecasting the development of relief-forming processes is an important part of any activity on the described territory. The long-term geological, ecological, geographical, and archaeological research conducted by the authors on the territory of the Altai Republic served as materials for this study. The geological materials were collected by the methods adopted in this field of research (field survey of structures and rocks, cartographic methods, analysis of general geological data, and others). The ecological and geographical results were obtained using geochemical, hydrochemical, analytical, and others.

Opis:
During the period from the last three hundred years BC to the beginning of the new era, (Hunno-Sarmatian period) the Huns in the East and the Sarmatians in the West changed the ethno-cultural situation in the steppe and forest-steppe zones of Eurasia. The cultural change is also noticeable in the north of the Altai mountains. The territory of the intermountain valley of the Lower Katun is characterized by the Maima culture named after the Maima-1 monument. This culture is represented mainly by the settlement sites, such as Dolina Svobody-2, Maima-1, Maima-13, Maima-14, Cheremshanka. The latest research in the area of Mazherok village enabled to define the burial monuments of the Maima archaeological culture (Chultukov Log-1g, Ust-Muny-1). In the 2012 the archaeological excavation was conducted on the Maima culture site Chultukow-Log 9 by the Russian-Polish expedition from the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology of the Russian Academy of Science (Siberian Branch) and Institute of Archaeology, Jagiellonian University. The results of the 2010–2013 field research in the area of Mazherok village enabled to discover new monuments of the Maima archaeological culture on the territory of the intermountain valley of the Lower Katun, which expressly contributes to the more precise chronology of this cultural formation, geographical range and peculiarities of the development of the area as well as reconstruction of the economic activities of the North Altai population in the Hunno-Sarmatian period.

Thus far, four – structurally very different – etymologies have been suggested for the Turkic word for ‘garlic’. This author adduces derivatives found in Altai, one of the Siberian Turkic languages, that provide crucial support for one of them.

Opis:
An overview is presented of gemstones from eastern Kazakhstan in terms of their geographical distribution, geological provenance and genesis, gemmological characteristics, historical use and current applications. Locally occurring precious, semi-precious and decorative stones were extracted and traded along the northern part of the Silk Road that traversed the area in earlier historical times. Currently, non-metallic minerals, which largely originate from mafic igneous and metamorphic bodies of the Altay and Kalba Mountains of Kazakhstan, still are insufficiently known and exploited industrially only marginally. For the present study, selected depositories of coloured stones at the Mineralogy Museum of the East Kazakhstan State Technical University were used, supplemented by the newly collected material during personal fieldwork in the southern Altay between 2005 and 2015. Standard documentation of the gemstones selected is provided, alongside with their known occurrence sites and an evaluation of the perspective gemstone-bearing deposits with respect to regional morphostructural bedrock characteristics. The most precious gemstones include topaz, corundum (sapphire and ruby), beryl (emerald and aquamarine), coloured tourmalines, agates as well as diamonds. Despite the great variety, the majority of these traditionally most valued stones are currently commercially not viable, unlike high-quality decorative stones.
