Opis:
Aim – The main aim of the study is to determine the dynamics of the ageing process of the Polish population and to present a forecast of population ageing based on comprehensive analysis of the age structure of this population. The separated components of this structure are biological age groups: 0–14, 15–64, 65 years and more. The time period of the research comprises the years 1950–2016, while the population forecast by age is presented for 2020 and 2050. The elaboration includes data from GUS. Research methodology – In assessing the level of the ageing of Polish society there were used, among others, the old age index, old age coefficient, a measure of the similarity of structures, a measure of the structural change intensity, and the median age. Score – In the years 1950–2016 in Poland there were observed changes in the age structure of the population in age groups: 0–14 years old, 15–64 years old, 65 years old and more, including a steady trend in the percentage of people in the age group 0–14 years old and a steady upward trend in the percentage of people aged 65 and over, a strong upward trend in the old age index, and a strong tendency of increase in the post-working age dependency ratio. The Central Statistical Office’s (GUS) forecasts indicate that the population ageing measured by changes in the age structure of the population and the shifting of the median age which are taking place in Poland in a dynamic manner, will continue with increased intensity over the next decades. Originality/value – The added value of the work is the use of the similarity of structures and the intensity of structure changes, which together with an approach based on classical indicators allowed for a comprehensive analysis of the age structure of the Polish population in dynamic terms, determining the quantitative nature of changes in the age structure over time, the direction of these changes and their intensity. It was also pointed out that in light of the ongoing demographic transformations, the concept of silver economy understood as an economic system aimed at using the potential of the elderly and taking into account their needs is becoming a priority.

Introduction. Bone age determination is a radiological method investigating the compatibility of ossification processes of bones with chronological ages. Aim. We aimed to investigate the use of CT staging of the medial clavicular epiphyseal ossification in bone age determination in Turkish adolescents and young adults. Material and methods. Chest CT exams of 2018 patients between 11 and 35 years of age were retrospectively evaluated for epiphyseal ossification stages of the bilateral medial clavicles (4036 clavicles) on both axial&coronal images and compared with the sex and chronologic age of the individuals in Turkey. Results. For stage 2,3 and 4 the ages of women were greater than men and it was statistically significant. For an individual classified as stage 4,it can be said with certainty that he or she has already reached the age of 18.There was no statistically significant difference between left&right sides and between the axial&coronal images. In addition, it was found that the medial clavicular head epiphyses showed a lot of variation. Conclusion. CT evaluation of the medial clavicular epiphysis ossification stages is helpful in determination of the individuals over the age of 18. Regardless of the sex, the stage 4 can be used as a criterion to make the prediction that an individual is older than 18 years.

This paper sets out to study recent developments in the relatively new area in management theory- Age Management. First the general labor and financial market conditions are specified which have led to the growing need of an age-oriented strategy for employment in the company. Next the concept of Age Management is defined, both from the macro, enterprise-level and individual perspectives. The next section studies the benefits derived from implementing Age Management for the company and its employees, followed by a section on specific Age Management tools and measures. The penultimate section explores the prerequisites for successful implementation. This paper finds that Age Management as a concept is gaining ground, predominantly in managing and retaining near-retirement-age workers. Concluding, we find that there is a significant need for more comprehensive Age Management and effective Age Management measures to maintain firms’ and economies’ competitiveness in the face of demographic decline.

Opis:
The paper presents the Lusatian culture materials recovered during the first three excavation seasons on site 1 at Zagórzyce, Kazimierza Wielka district. The discovered artefacts (pottery shards) may be connected particulary with the end of the Late Bronze Age and the beginning of the Iron Age (Bronze Age Period V and HaC phase). The collected bone remains were analysed archaeozoologically, which allowed for conclusions to be drawn on the model of animal husbandry. An analysis of the species composition showed that the predominant dietary components were cattle and small ruminants, followed by pigs. Such a herd composition suggests a economy based on herding cattle and small ruminants. Due to the small number of collected bone remains it seems that additional research needs to be conducted, using materials from the remaining excavation seasons.

The number of elderly patients undergoing liver transplantation (LT) is increasing worldwide. The aim of the study was to evaluate the impact of recipient age exceeding 60 years on early and long-term outcomes after LT. Material and methods. This study comprised data of 786 patients after primary LT performed at a single center between January 2005 and October 2012. Patients over and under 60 years of age were compared with respect to baseline characteristics and outcomes: postoperative mortality (90-day) and 5-year patient (PS) and graft (GS) survival. Associations between recipient age exceeding 60 years and LT results were assessed in multiple Cox regression models. Results. Recipients older than 60 years (n=107; 13.6%) were characterized by more frequent hepatitis C virus infections (p<0.001), malignancies (p<0.001), and cardiovascular comorbidities (p<0.001); less frequent primary sclerosing cholangitis (p=0.002) and Roux-en-Y hepaticojejunostomy (p<0.001); lower Model for End-stage Liver Disease (MELD; p=0.043); and increased donor age (p=0.012). Fiveyear PS of older and younger recipients was 72.7% and 80.6% (p=0.538), while the corresponding rates of GS were 70.3% and 77.5% (p=0.548), respectively. Recipient age exceeding 60 years was not significantly associated with postoperative mortality (p=0.215), PS (p=0.525) and GS (p=0.572) in multivariate analyses. The list of independent predictors comprised MELD (p<0.001) for postoperative mortality; malignancies (p=0.003) and MELD (p<0.001) for PS; and malignancies (p=0.003), MELD (p<0.001) and donor age (p=0.017) for GS. Conclusions. Despite major differences between elderly and young patients, chronological age exceeding 60 years alone should not be considered as a contraindication for LT.

The aim of our study was to find out how kindergarten teachers perceive the issue of age-homogeneous and heterogeneous classes at kindergartens. A self-designed questionnaire and interview were used for measuring, which was part of the research methods used (interview, observation, questionnaire). The questionnaire included items aimed at finding out respondents’ opinions on the age composition of children in kindergarten classes. The research sample consisted of 234 female teachers. On the basis of results it can be stated that respondents preferred age-homogeneous groups in classes. However, those teaching age-heterogeneous classes saw more advantages of such division. Research results also showed that younger respondents preferred dividing children into age-homogeneous groups more than older respondents.

It is argued in this paper that late Frasnian global cooling was the first step in the onset of the Late Palaeozoic Ice Age, and that the late Frasnian extinctions are analogous to the early Oligocene (Oi-1) extinctions that took place in the first step in the onset of the Cenozoic Ice Age. It is argued that the physical evidence for the existence of late Frasnian glaciation, like the Oi-1 glaciation, is largely geochemical: the sharp increases in δ18O values and positive δ13C anomalies that occurred in the late Frasnian and earliest Famennian. In addition to the geochemical evidence, also like the Oi-1 glaciation, stratigraphic calculations indicate a major sea-level fall occurred during the late Frasnian and early Famennian, a sea-level fall that is argued to have been glacially produced. It is here proposed that the best possible independent physical evidence for the existence of late Frasnian glaciation, other than the geochemical and sea-level evidence, would be the discovery of ice-rafted debris in marine sediments of late Frasnian age similar to the ice-rafted debris found in Oi-1 marine sediments (Zachos et al., 1992; Ehrmann and Mackensen, 1992).

In this paper, the authors have examined 94 unprovenanced arrowheads (tanged and socketed) that are stored in the cultural historical property repository of the Administration of Cultural Heritage of Kerman Province (Southeastern Iran). The illlegal possessors claimed to have discovered the arrowheads via illegal diggings in the Kerman Province. Most of the examined arrowheads were probably designed for warfare and are comparable to findings within current borders of Iran or its vicinity. Most of the tanged arrowheads probably date to the Iron Age of Iran (1450-550 B.C.). Most of the trilobate arrowheads can be compared to the findings of Achaemenid sites or resemble items that have been excavated from layers associated with the Achaemenids. Some of the Bronze Age arrowheads, however, could not be compared with any items that have been recovered from Iran or its neighboring regions.

Opis:
Aim/purpose – The demographic dividend, defined as the proportion of working age to the rest of the population, is an opportunity seen mainly in developing countries, resulting from demographic transition. Efforts to maximize gains from it are crucial, especially for the Arabian Gulf states, where labor force demands are met at the danger of native youth unemployment that leads to issues of human resources utilization. This research on Saudi Arabian demographic dividend aims at tracking changes in the age structure, labor force participation, and prospects leading to economic gains. Design/methodology/approach – Data from various sources such as censuses (1974, 1992, 2004, and 2010), national labor force surveys 1999-2017 and United Nations (UN) Population Prospects are compiled and statistically analyzed with a historical approach for calculations of age distribution, median age, and labor force participation adopting standard procedures. Findings – An age structural transition occurred: percentage of population 15-64 years increased from 47.2% to 67.3%, increasing the dividend from 89.6% to 205.5%. This influenced the labor force’s sectoral distribution, and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per working age population. Research implications/limitations – The dividend’s first phase, since 2000, is expected to last until 2050, followed by the second dividend which may last longer. Along with the dividend, there shall be policies executed to reap the benefits, including scientifically planned recruitment of potential candidates in various professions, both in public and private sectors. Originality/value/contribution – This research concerns a population, which is unexplored in detail, especially at a macro level. Thus, such an in-depth analysis seeks importance in revealing special demographic dimensions to a wider international audience. There are no such studies conducted in Saudi Arabia, with a national perspective helpful for revamping efforts to boost labor force reforms and to make maximum gain during the short-lived demographic dividend period.

A rich and diverse pottery assemblage from the Middle Bronze Age through the Urartian Red Polished Ware and local “post-Urartian ware” of the Iron III period comes from occupational deposits discovered within the lower town of Metsamor during fieldwork in 2018. The stone architecture recorded in this sector functioned in the first half of the 1st millennium BC. The pottery finds thus represent periods from Iron I to Iron III, for the first time producing a detailed sequence for the previously less than satisfactorily documented Iron I phase. New types of pottery were also distinguished for the Urartian and post-Urartian phases.

The population of the Lusatian culture inhabiting the Lublin area during the Bronze age and Early Iron age used various items made of flint and stone. The most spectacular finds include sickles and sickles inserts with surface retouch. Items made from flint and stone were used mainly as tools, but also as weapons, as well as prestige indicators. They also had symbolic function. These artefacts were probably produced on site at settlements and they were among the accessories of everyday life of the population living then. In the Early Iron age, in the valley of the Vistula River, local flint deposits were exploited. Flint knapping workshops were set up here. Extremly numerous flint artefacts were recorded at these workshops and they represent the so-called Kosin industry.

We measured the concentrations and isotopic compositions of He, Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe in a 60.36 mg sample of the Sołtmany meteorite (L6), which fell in northeastern Poland in 2011. The Kr and Xe data suggest a mixture of atmospheric contamination and Q. Using cosmogenic 21Ne and 38Ar concentrations, Sołtmany’s cosmic-ray exposure (CRE) age was determined to be ~29.2 Ma. The preatmospheric radius for Sołtmany was equal to or less than approximately 15 cm and the sample studied here most likely came from close to the preatmospheric surface of the meteoroid. While the 40Ar gas retention age is about 4137 Ma, the 4He gas retention age is 1610 Ma, suggesting loss of a major 4He fraction likely during an impact and/or degassing event on the Sołtmany parent body prior to the ejection of the Sołtmany meteorite ~29.2 Ma ago.
