This is a superficial review of basic problems in linear regression analysis. The discussion is numerically oriented; it covers estimation of regression coefficients, tests of various hypotheses about them, and selection of the best subset of explanatory variables. For a comprehensive study of the selection problem and other closely related topics, see the recent survey article by R. R. Hocking [Biometrics 32 (1976), no. 1, 1–49; MR0398008]. (MR0448720)

Opis:
Wrought Mg-Zn-Ce alloy (ZE10) has been pre-compressed and subsequently subjected to tensile loading. Due to a fibre texture of the samples, the level of pre-compression stress significantly influences the subsequent tensile behaviour. The acoustic emission technique was used for monitoring active deformation mechanisms during mechanical testing. The obtained acoustic emission results are correlated to the stress-time curves and the differences in the acoustic emission count rate were used to reveal changes in underlying deformation mechanisms. Firstly, a compression-tension cycle was monitored by the acoustic emission technique. Then, the samples were deformed to specific points on the stress-time curve, where acoustic emission exhibits strong changes in the activity. The following microstructure analysis of the samples, deformed to different strain-levels, by using electron back scattered diffraction method brought a detailed insight into active deformation mechanisms. Twinning during the pre-compression was followed by detwinning during the tensile loading. Two consecutive acoustic emission peaks, which appeared at larger strains, are explained by interplay of detwinning and dislocation slip and a nucleation of compression twins, respectively.

Opis:
The cyclic strain localization in crystalline materials subjected to cyclic loading results in specific dislocation arrangement in persistent slip bands consisting of alternating dislocation rich and dislocation poor volumes. In the present model the interaction of mobile dislocations in persistent slip band leading to the formation of point defects during cyclic straining is considered. Point defects are steadily produced and simultaneously annihilated due to localized cyclic straining. The non-equilibrium point defects migrate to the matrix and result in transfer of matter between persistent slip band and the matrix and formation of the internal stresses both in the persistent slip band and in the matrix. Plastic relaxation of internal stresses leads to the formation of the characteristic surface relief in the form of persistent slip markings (extrusions and intrusions). Process of point defect migration is quantitatively described and the form of extrusion and parallel intrusions is predicted under some simplifying assumptions. The predictions of the model are discussed and predicted surface relief is compared with selected observations of surface relief produced by cyclic straining.

Opis:
Differential scanning calorimetry is discussed as a tool for characterization of shape memory alloy materials with the example of $Ni_{51at.%}-Ti$ polycrystalline material. Some inconsistencies connected with the differential scanning calorimetry analysis results present in the contemporary literature are indicated, for example large discrepancies in the registered heats of phase transition or differences in registered heats of forward and reverse phase transition, especially in the case of multi-stage phase transition sequences. An attempt is undertaken to explain some of the discrepancies. The overall conclusion from the present work is that forward and reverse sensible heats of phase transition are equal, and discrepancies reported in the literature are artefacts. It is recommended that as a standard practice of differential scanning calorimetry analysis of shape memory alloy materials not only characteristic temperatures but also sensible heat of phase transition should be reported, which can be done at practically no additional cost.

Opis:
We analyze 2-dimensional chaotic forms resulting from very simple systems based on two chaotic characteristics that is rotation and parallel movement or translation in geometric terms. Reflection is another alternative, along with rotation, for several interesting chaotic formations. Rotation and translation are very common types of movements in the world around us. Chaotic or non-chaotic forms arise from these two main generators. The rotation-translation chaotic case presented is based on the theory we analyzed in the book and in the paper. An overview of the chaotic flows in rotation-translation is given. There is observed the presence of chaos when discrete rotation-translation equation forms are introduced. In such cases the continuous equations analogue of the discrete cases is useful. Characteristic cases and illustrations of chaotic attractors and forms are analyzed and simulated. The analysis of chaotic forms and attractors of the models presented is given along with an exploration of the characteristic or equilibrium points. Applications in the fields of astronomy-astrophysics (galaxies), chaotic advection (the sink problem) and Von Karman streets are presented.
