Opis:
A new type of the monolithic acoustic scanner based on a near-surface quasicomposite two-dimensional array, implemented in the solid elastic substrate was proposed. It provides a simple means of focusing and scanning a beam of acoustic waves, radiated into the depth of the elastic solid substrate. A chirped surface acoustic wave is converted into a focused bulk wave by scattering from an array composed of a 2D periodic system of regions with varying material parameters, located at the surface of a surface acoustic waves substrate. In the paper, a simple numerical simulation model is presented to analyse the influences of the dynamical and geometrical parameters of the surface structure, as well as the influences of incident surface acoustic waves signal profile on the focal distribution.

Opis:
Undertaking long-term acoustic measurements on sites located near an airport is related to a problem of large quantities of recorded data which very often represents information not related to flight operations. In such areas, usually defined as zones of limited use, other sources of noise often exist such as roads or railway lines treated in such context as an acoustic background. Manual verification of such recorded data is a costly and time-consuming process. Automatic differentiation of the tested noise source from background and precise recognition of quantitative impact of aircraft noise on the acoustic climate in a particular area is an important task. This paper presents the idea of a method that can be used for identifying aircraft operations (flights, take-offs, landings) supported by experimental studies carried out with the use of 3D Microflown sound intensity probe and SoundField ST350 ambisonic microphone. The proposed method is based on determining the spatial sound intensity vector in the tested acoustic field during a monitoring timespan. On the grounds of this information, aircraft operations are marked in a continuous record of noise events.

Acoustic structures are currently classified mainly in terms of their acoustic absorption and insulation properties. Knowing the sound scattering parameter can significantly improve the useful value of materials and identify their best applications. Currently no studies are performed in Poland on the sound scattering coefficients of materials. This is due to a complex measurement procedure and a lack of legal requirements. The authors have attempted to make such measurements on the basis of the standard ISO 17497-1:2004: Acoustics - Sound-scattering properties of surfaces - Part 1: Measurement of the random-incidence scattering coefficient in a reverberation room. Measurement and calculation methods are presented, and problems encountered during this study have been described. This issue is of particular importance, especially in the acoustic design of interiors.

Opis:
Ambisonic impulse responses (also known as the Spatial Impulse Responses) are getting more and more popular in many applications of room acoustics. Measuring, modeling, synthesizing, or simulating acoustics of interiors with emphasize on their spatial features are the examples. The present article shows a methodology of room acoustics auralization assessment using the ambisonics technology. A case study is shown for room acoustics capturing (measuring the Spatial Impulse Response) and reproducing with the use of a multi-channel sound system. An discussion and considerations about fidelity of such reconstruction is provided. Furthermore, a quantitative measure for the auralization quality is proposed. Also on-site experiments are described and their results presented to illustrate the theoretical considerations and outline options for future work. Obtained results show that most of the proposed quality factors meet the assumptions. After possible future modifications and additional research, the proposed methods could be used in evaluation of room acoustic auralization.

Opis:
The paper deals with difficulties that are encountered by investors and decision-making authorities in the course of investment processes involving construction of wind power plants. Moreover, attention is focused on absence of standardized procedures that could be used to determine environmental impact of wind turbines, mainly in the scope of acoustic effects appearing in conditions typical for operation of such devices (strong wind), high elevation of related noise sources, and the nature of the sound emission (tonality and amplitude modulation). Lack of such procedures is a source of serious ambiguities developing in assessment of all investment stages - planning and forecasting, construction, and operation. An additional problem arises in the case of power plants located in the vicinity of Natura 2000 area, where construction projects are often obstructed on the grounds of unclear criteria concerning, among other things, the effect of acoustic phenomena on birds, bats, and other animals. It follows from the research presented in this paper that the consistent system of procedures and criteria should be worked out on the grounds of long-term monitoring studies.

The shedding process and acoustic flow formation in the region of outlet of a cylinder duct has been investigated by means of the particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique. The research work on the behavior of the sound field at outlets of waveguides addresses issues of importance to industrial applications. The obtained results can be used in a number of industrial applications involving pipes, ducts and tubing. In our investigation the acoustics flow fields are measured with a phase-locked PIV system with high sampling rate and large internal memory block using DAVIS v. 8.11 software. A cross-correlation method, in conjunction with the FFT analysis, is used as a vector processing algorithm. A series of PIV vector maps was used to evaluate the acoustic velocity field at the open end of circular tube throughout the acoustic cycle for frequencies of 700 Hz and 1400 Hz. Six phase steps were assumed for one frequency cycle and the characteristic signal was extracted from the velocity data step and shown graphically.

Opis:
We experimentally demonstrate a new acoustic sensor based on the concept of quantum mechanical scattering fidelity and the Loschmidt echo applied to classical acoustic waves in air. The sensor employs a one-recording-channel time-reversal mirror that exploits spatial reciprocity to sensitively measure the classical analog of the scattering fidelity of an enclosed region. The experiments are carried out in a stairwell using a simple speaker and microphone. The input is a 7.0 kHz signal that is amplitude modulated with a 1 ms long pulse. We examine the sensitivity of the time-reversed reconstructed pulse to phase noise, long term drift, and to typical perturbations caused by the rotation of an object in the scattering environment.

Current standards for the measurement of the SI derived unit of sound-in-air pressure, the pascal, are based upon microphone reciprocity calibration and are achieved indirectly through microphone sensitivity. These methods require microphones of specific geometry and performance characteristics, effectively artefacts, and are traceable through standards for electrical and dimensional units. Measurement of acousto-optic interactions can provide a direct approach to measuring sound pressure. One acousto-optic interaction is the periodic scattering of photons caused by particles moving in a sinusoidal manner due to propagating sound across interference fringes formed at the intersection of two coherent laser beams. The sequence of these scattered photons, which is collected using telescopic optics and generated by a single photon counting device, can be autocorrelated to yield the periodicity of the photon events. Through mathematical analysis of the autocorrelation function it has been shown that acoustic particle velocity is inversely proportional to the time of the first minimum. This has effectively been shown for measurements in acoustic standing wave tubes and has been developed into a method which can be applied in an anechoic chamber. This paper describes the design and implementation of such a system which allows for a comparison of sound pressure measurements using optical and microphone based techniques.

Opis:
This work deals with an interaction of a magnetic fluid of a dielectric nature with a magnetic field by means of ultrasound waves measurements and analysis. Ultrasound analysis is known as a non-destructive inspection tool often used in technical diagnostics, moreover, it has numerous applications in medicine and biology, too. We report the low-frequency ultrasound analysis of a dielectric magnetic fluid in a low-intensity external static magnetic field. The studied magnetic fluid was composed of a transformer oil and dispersed magnetite nanoparticles coated with oleic acid. Experiments were carried out by using an ultrasonic testing cell. The cell was exposed to a magnetic field of 50 mT in both parallel and perpendicular direction to the waves propagation. A through-transmission mode measurement was applied, where two fixed narrow-band transducers with completely shielded crystal for maximum RFI/EMI immunity (Physical Acoustic R15I-AST, the resonant frequency 150 kHz) served as a transmitter and a receiver. In this way we carried out the measurement of the frequency-dependent ultrasonic response to a rectangle calibrating signal of 5 μs pulse width. Digitized signals were recorded for further analysis. We present the frequency domain analysis of the low-frequency ultrasound in magnetic fluid. The frequency spectrum in magnetic fluid colloidal system was calculated by the Fourier transformation method. Results show that there is a frequency shift in the amplitude-frequency spectrum caused by the step-up magnetic field. The higher the magnetic field, the higher the frequency of the peaks. The effect of particle aggregation in magnetic field on the ultrasound wave propagation is discussed in the paper.

Opis:
This paper deals with the application of six sigma methodology for optimization of a cardan shaft. The aim of this optimization is to reduce vibration of the drive shaft and consequently improve vibration noise harshness of the vehicle. The six sigma methodology has been applied to a light truck, which has received excessive vibration and noise complaints. The define-measure-analyze-improve-control approach has been followed to enhance the vibration noise harshness statistics. The result shows that all expected vibration noise harshness performance targets have been dramatically improved when compared to the initial values. As a conclusion, the case study on a light truck is a useful reference to improve vehicle performance for vibration noise harshness.
