Opis:
The first words of the Prologue to St. John’s Gospel – “In the beginning” – are a literary allusion to the first words of Genesis. The Evangelist continues in this manner a long tradition of wisdom literature, which interpreted and developed creation theology, in particular in the texts where Wisdom was personified (Prov 8,22–23 and Sir 24). In fact, the first word of the Prologue (ἐν ἀρχῇ) refers its readers not just to the creation narrative, but to biblical wisdom literature and indeed to the whole corpus of Scripture, i.e. Old Testament, as the interpretative key to the Fourth Gospel.

Collective phenomena due to persistent currents in carbon multiwall nanotubes are studied. The formula for persistent currents minimising free energy and conditions for the stability of persistent currents in multiwall nanotubes in magnetic field are derived. Numerical calculations performed show the possibility of obtaining spontaneous currents in two optimal configurations: undoped armchair-only multiwall nanotubes up to 0.01 K, and zig-zag-chiral-chiral-zig-zag multiwall nanotubes doped to -3.033 eV up to about 1 K. The latter configuration may exhibit also the diamagnetic expulsion of magnetic field, which according to our calculations can reach 20% of the external flux.

The quantum tunnelling of spin-polarized electrons through a Rashba barrier on a single layer graphene is studied by the scattering matrix method. It is shown that the magnetoresistance, defined as the difference between conductance at the presence and absence of the Rashba spin-orbit interaction, oscillates with the intensity of interaction. These oscillations are also observed in the conductance versus the potential energy of the barrier.

We present experimental results, which may indicate the possibility of the coexistence of the Kondo effect and ferromagnetism in macroscopic planar magnetic tunnel junctions with a layer of nanodots inside tunnel barriers. A conductance double peak structure was observed. Magnetic field dependence of the splitting of a conductance peak, and temperature evolution of the conductance curves are well explained from the theoretical point of view according to the predictions of the Kondo physics and cotunneling in the Anderson quantum dot coupled to ferromagnetic leads.

Electronic transport through a quantum dot in the Coulomb-blockade cotunelling regime is investigated both experimentally and theoretically, where a single-wall carbon-nanotube weakly coupled to metallic leads plays a role of the dot. We observe a pronounced current peak for the singlet-triplet transition in a half-shell filling regime due to inelastic cotunneling processes. Using the second order perturbation theory we explain physical mechanisms determining the details of signal.

Opis:
A new technique has been used to probe the electronic properties of quantum dots. Here we discuss the case of semiconducting CdSe dots. This technique allows us to fill (or empty) semiconducting quantum dot with many electrons. The detection scheme is based on an original approach where the investigated particle is attached to only one electrode, a carbon nanotube. The conductance of the nanotube is measured as a function of a gate voltage $(V_{g}),$ which allows the detection of individual electrons transferred onto the quantum dot. For certain range of $V_{g}$ we noticed no electron transfer which is attributed to the energy gap of the CdSe quantum dot. Our study shows that single-electron detection with carbon nanotube transistor represents a new strategy to study the separation between the electronic discrete energy levels of the semiconducting quantum dot.

Opis:
Transport properties of a two-dimensional nanostructure composed of a quantum dot surrounded by a quantum ring (dot-ring nanostructure), are discussed. This complex system is a highly controllable object. Conduction through dot-ring nanostructure depends crucially on the coupling strength of its states to the electrodes, which is related to the spatial distribution of the electron's wave functions in dot-ring nanostructure. This distribution can be strongly modified, e.g., by the electrical gating so that the ground and excited states move between the inner dot and the outer ring. In this paper we show that this property can be used to control single-electron DC current through dot-ring nanostructure in the Coulomb blockade regime so that it can be used as a single electron transistor.

The out-of-equilibrium electron transport of carbon nanotube semiconducting quantum dot placed in a magnetic field is studied in the Kondo regime by means of the non-equilibrium Green functions. The equation of motion method is used. For parallel magnetic field the Kondo peak splits into four peaks, following the simultaneous splitting of the orbital and spin states. For perpendicular field orientation the triple peak structure of density of states is observed with the central peak corresponding to orbital Kondo effect and the satellites reflecting the spin and spin-orbital fluctuations.

Host-guest interactions can be the unique method of spin manipulation in nanoscale. Strong changes in spin localization are generated when potential barriers between nanographitic units of activated carbon fibers are modified by interaction with adsorbed molecules. Stronger modifications occur when dipolar guest molecules are stimulated with external electric field. We report experimental results which show the influence of electric field on the spin localization in activated carbon fibers.

Opis:
This is a review of our recent developments in the physics of lead telluride nanostructures. PbTe is a IV-VI narrow gap paraelectric semiconductor, characterized by the huge static dielectric constant ε >1000 at helium temperatures. We nanostructurized this material by means of e-beam lithography and wet chemical etching of modulation doped PbTe/Pb$\text{}_{1-x}$Eu$\text{}_{x}$Te quantum wells. Magnetoresistance measurements performed on the nano-structures revealed a number of magnetosize effects, confirming a ballistic motion of the carriers. The most important observation is that the conductance of narrow constrictions shows a precise zero-field quantization in 2e$\text{}^{2}$/h units, despite a significant amount of charged defects in the vicinity of the conducting channel. This unusual result is a consequence of a strong suppression of the Coulomb potential fluctuations in PbTe, an effect confirmed by numerical simulations. Furthermore, the orbital degeneracy of electron waveguide modes can be controlled by the width of PbTe/Pb$\text{}_{1-x}$Eu$\text{}_{x}$Te quantum wells, so that unusual sequences of plateau conductance can be observed. Finally, conductance measurements in a nonlinear regime allowed for an estimation of the energy spacing between the one-dimensional subbands.

Electron tunneling through a double quantum dot side coupled to a pair of leads is examined in finite-U slave boson mean field approach. Both the two-impurity Kondo regime at half filling and one-and three-electron Kondo effects are analyzed. Special attention is paid to the case when one of the dots is coupled to ferromagnetic lead and another to nonmagnetic. Depending on the gate voltage, the same or opposite sign of polarizations of conductance of the leads is observed.
