Opis:
The resurgence of wheat stripe rust is of great concern for world food security. Owing to resistance breakdown and the appearance of new virulent high-temperature adapted races of Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici (Pst), many high yielding commercial varieties in the country lost their yield potential. Searching for new sources of resistance is the best approach to mitigate the problem. Quantitative resistance (partial or adult plant) or durable resistance is reported to be more stable than race specific resistance. In the current perusal, a repertoire of 57 promising wheat lines along with the KLcheck line Morocco, developed through hybridisation and selection of local and international lines with International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) origin, were evaluated under natural field conditions at Nuclear Institute for Agriculture and Biology (NIAB) during the 2012−2013 and 2013−2014 time periods. Final rust severity (FRS), the area under the rust progress curve (AURPC), the relative area under the rust progress curve (rAURPC), and the coefficient of infection (CI) were unraveled to infer the level of quantitative resistance. Final rust severity was recorded when the susceptible check exhibited 100% severity. There were 21 lines which were immune (no disease), 16 which were resistant, five moderately resistant, two resistant-to-moderately resistant, one moderately resistant-to-moderately susceptible, 5 moderately susceptible-to-susceptible, one moderately susceptible, and six exhibited a susceptible response. Nevertheless, 51 lines exhibited a high level of partial resistance while the three lines, NW-5- -1212-1, NW-7-30-1, and NW-7-5 all showed a moderate level of partial resistance based on FRS, while 54 lines, on the basis of AURPC and rAURPC, were identified as conferring a high level of partial resistance. Moreover, adult plant resistance was conferred by 47 wheat lines, based on CI value. It was striking that, 13 immune lines among 21 were derived from parents of CIMMYT origin. Cluster analysis was executed to determine the diversity among the wheat genotypes based on stripe rust resistance and yield parameters. All genotypes were grouped into nine clusters exhibiting a high level of diversity at a 25% linkage distance. There were 29 wheat lines resistant to stripe rust that were grouped into the first three clusters, while 4 high-yielding lines were in Cluster VIII. The susceptible check, Morocco, was separated from rest of lines and fell in the last cluster i.e. Cluster IX. Based on the results, inter-crossing immune/ resistant lines is recommended, and with high yielding lines − it is also recommended that cultivars with improved disease resistance and yield potential be developed.

The paper is a review of classical and recent studies on willow rusts in Europe, with special reference to short rotation coppice willows used for biomass production, such as common osier willow (Salix viminalis L.). The review presents the taxonomic classification of rust fungi from the genus Melampsora spp. We present a list of telial hosts (genus Salix) as well as aecial hosts for different rust species. The life cycle of this fungal pathogen is described in detail from the epidemiological and genetic point of view. The DNA polymorphism of M. lariciepitea, the rust species most responsible for severe yield losses of plant biomass, is characterised based on RAPD, AFLP and RFLP-PCR methods.

Opis:
From 2009 to 2018, a total of 80 wheat crops were studied at plot and regional scales to predict stripe rust epidemics based on influential climatic indicators in Kermanshah province, Iran. Disease onset time and epidemic intensity varied spatially and temporarily. The disease epidemic variable was classified as having experienced nonepidemic, moderate or severe epidemics to be used for statistical analysis. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to identify climatic variables associated with occurrence and intensity of stripe rust epidemics. Two principal factors accounting for 70% of the total variance indicated association of stripe rust epidemic occurrence with the number of icy days with minimum temperatures below 0°C (for subtropical regions) and below −10°C (for cool temperate and semi-arid regions). Disease epidemic intensity was linked to the number of rainy days, the number of days with minimum temperatures within the range of 7−8°C and relative humidity (RH) above 60%, and the number of periods involving consecutive days with minimum temperature within the range of 6−9°C and RH% > 60% during a 240-day period, from September 23 to May 21. Among mean monthly minimum temperatures and maximum relative humidity examined, mean maximum relative humidity for Aban (from October 23 to November 21) and mean minimum temperature for Esfand (from February 20 to March 20) indicated higher contributions to stripe rust epidemic development. Confirming PCA results, a multivariate logit ordinal model was developed to predict severe disease epidemics. The findings of this study improved our understanding of the combined interactions between air temperature, relative humidity, rainfall, and wheat stripe rust development over a three-season period of autumn-winter-spring.

The Czech winter wheat cv. Regina which does not possess specific genes for powdery mildew resistance except Pm5 was crossed with the cvs. Florida, Tjelvar, Agra, Olymp and Sabina, all possessing T1BL-1RS and the dominant suppressor SuPm8, with Riebesel 47/51 possessing substitution 1R-1B and SuPm8 and with the T1BL-1RS cvs. Sparta, Iris, Mona without SuPm8. Powdery mildew isolates avirulent on Pm8 and virulent on other Pm genes were used in the trials. Tests for resistance were carried out either on seedlings at the first leaf stage or on detached leaves cultured on benzimidazolagar. No segregation for resistant plants in F₂ of all crosses of the cv. Regina with cultivars possessing T1BL-1RS and SuPm8 indicates that Regina has SuPm8. The segregation ratio 3 resistant: 13 susceptible in the F₂ population of crosses between the cv. Regina and cultivars possessing T1BL-1RS and no SuPm8 also confirms the presence of SuPm8 in the cv. Regina. The obtained results also indicate that expression of Pm2 and Pm4b is not affected by SuPm8 and that SuPm8 does not affect stem rust resistance gene Sr31 located on 1RS segment.

There were performed tests on a set of twenty single substitutions of the D-genome chromosomes from various bread wheats into winter triticale Presto, a set of seven disomic addition lines of chromosomes from winter rye Dańkowskie Zlote to winter wheat Grana, and all parental forms to study on the chromosome location of major genes that are resposible for seedling stage resistance to Puccinia recondita f.sp.tritici in triticale. For each line, seedlings developed to two-leaf stage were exposured to four pathotypes of the pathogen predominant in Poland to test them in the greenhouse conditions. There were high resistance among the substitution lines of Presto, 1D(1A), 4D(4R), and 5D(5R) suggesting that chromosomes introduced from the D-genome carried resistance genes. Among the addition lines, GH2R was highly resistant. Resistance to rust at seedlings stage of Presto lines of D- genome and addition lines Grana (wheat) / Dankowskie Zlote (rye) shows that chromosome 2R is responsible for the resistance to the disease.

Economically important rye (Secale cereale L.) cultivars are highly susceptible to leaf rust caused by Puccinia recondita f.sp. secalis in Germany. Presently, only race-specific resistances are available, which are likely to lose their effect after prolonged application. To study possibilities of increasing the durability of resistance, a three-year field experiment was initiated in 2000. Seventeen differential lines, three susceptible standards, 30 segregating populations with one to four resistance sources and two full-sib families were grown at six locations under a high level of natural infection. All segregating populations were significantly more resistant than the susceptible standards. The resistance level, however, was under these conditions moderate only. The two full-sib families from Russia showed high resistance. Strong genotype × location interactions were observed indicating different race compositions of the local leaf rust populations.

A study was conducted in the IO Experimental Ecological Orchard in 2010-2014 to assess the severity of occurrence of the apple rust mite Aculus schlechtendali (Nal.) on apple trees of the cultivars ‘Pinova’ and ‘Topaz’ grown at two spacings: 3×1 m and 3.5×3 m. In wintertime, the recorded numbers of females overwintering under the buds on annual shoots were low: 0-3.6 females per bud. The number of rust mites in the summer was the lowest in 2011, with an average of 0.6-11.8 individuals per cm2 of leaf surface area, and the highest in 2014, when it averaged 42.8-71.9 individuals / cm2. The largest numbers of the apple rust mite were recorded on the leaves of trees of the cultivar ‘Pinova’ and the leaves of trees of both cultivars grown at the spacing of 3×1 m.
W Ekologicznym Sadzie Doświadczalnym IO, w latach 2010-2014 oceniono nasilenie występowania pordzewiacza jabłoniowego Aculus schlechtendali (Nal.) na drzewach jabłoni odmian ‘Pinova’ i ‘Topaz’ rosnących w dwóch rozstawach: 3 x 1 m i 3,5 x 3 m. W okresię zimowym notowano niską liczebność samic zimujących pod pąkami na pędach jednorocznych, która wyniosła 0-3,6 samic/1 pak. Liczebność pordzewiacza w okresie letnim była najniższa w roku 2011 i wyniosła średnio 0,6-11,8 osobnika/cm2 liścia, a największa w roku 2014 gdzie wyniosła średnio 42,8-71,9 osobnika/cm2. Największa liczebność pordzewiacza zanotowano na liściach drzew odmiany ‘Pinova’ oraz na liściach drzew obydwu odmian rosnących w rozstawie 3 x 1m.

Since 1967, over 2,500 rye (Secale cereale L. and S. montanum Guss.) populations have been studied at the N.I.Vavilov Research Institute of Plant Industry in order to determine genetic diversity of the crop with respect to leaf rust (Puccinia recondita Rob.) resistance. Plants possessing race-specific resistance to leaf rust were found in 51 accessions (cultivars, landraces and wild species). In 2000, a study of 420 rye accessions revealed stem rust (Puccinia graminis Pers. f. sp. secalis Erikss. et Henn.) resistant genotypes in 69 of them. Control of leaf rust resistance was found to be dominant monogenic in 44 accessions, and digenic in cultivar Chulpan 2. In some accessions, e.g. Avangard 2, Novozybkovskaya 4-2 and Derzhavinskaya 2, leaf rust resistance of individual plants was determined by one dominant gene, while in other plants of the same accessions it was determined by two dominant genes. In most resistance sources (Sanim, Chernigovskaya 3, Kharkovskaya 55) genetic control of the character is determined by the Lr4 gene, in Jmmunnaya 1 by Lr5, in Chulpan 3 and Immunnaya 4 by Lr6, in Novozybkovskaya 4-2 by Lr7, and in Lovaszpatonai by Lr8, in Yaroslavna 3 by LriO. Stem rust resistance is controlled by the dominant gene Sri. By pyramiding effective resistance genes two new winter rye cultivars have been bred. These are Estafeta Tatarstana (1999) and Era (2001) characterized by a high-level resistance to leaf and stem rust, to powdery mildew.
