Opis:
The paper describes an adaptive control system of the waves, implemented in the Ship Design and Research Centre, CTO S.A. The purpose of generating the waves in the towing tank is the modelling of the environmental conditions during hydrodynamic model tests. The tests are performed on scale models of towed or free running ships, anchored structures like oil rigs or bottommounted structures, e.g. wind turbines. In the towing tank of CTO S.A., the waves are generated using a flap-type wavemaker with hydraulic drive. The adaptive control system includes gain scheduling and Black-Box model. It has been developed and implemented using the 32-bit embedded system and computer application (C#.NET). The Black-Box model was proposed as a simple solution allowing compensating the hydromechanical phenomena affecting the generated waves, i.e. disintegration, reflection, damping and nonlinear energy transfer. The solution proved to be sufficient to generate required wave spectra with expected accuracy in a user-friendly manner.
Adaptacyjne sterowanie falą basenową obejmuje harmonogramowanie wzmocnienia i model typu Black-Box. Opracowany system sterowania został implementowany w 32-bitowym systemie wbudowanym i aplikacji komputerowej w języku C# w środowisku .NET. Wprowadzony model typu Black-Box uwzględnia efekty hydromechanicznych procesów i zjawisk – m. in. rozpadu, odbicia, tłumienia i nieliniowego transferu energii – które mają wpływ na generowane fale. Przedstawione rozwiązanie pozwala w prosty sposób i z oczekiwaną dokładnością modelować zadane widma fal basenowych.

Opis:
The paper refers to the registration of road events by a modern device called EDR – black box for all types of the motor vehicles. The device records data concerning vehicle’s technical condition, the way it was driven and RTS. The recorder may be used in private and commercial cars, taxies, buses and trucks. The recorder may serve the purpose of a neutral witness for the police, courts and insurance firms, for which it will facilitate making the reconstruction of the road accidents events and will provide a proof for those who caused them. The device will bring efficient driving, which will significantly contribute to decreasing the number of road accidents and limiting the environmental pollution. In the end in the last year German parliament backed a proposal to the European Commission to put black boxes, which gather information from vehicles involved in accidents, in all the new cars from 2015 on.

Algorithms in information technology influence changes in contemporary organizations. They monitor business processes, support decision-making, and help to increase efficiency. The literature has described extensively the applications of algorithmic technology in new models of organizations but few studies have addressed the relationship between algorithms and organizational culture. This paper fills that niche by concentrating on black boxing to address the technological transparency in the algorithmic workplace. This paper uses the case study of the Amazon POZ 1 warehouse near Poznań, Poland. The findings show that algorithmic culture has a profound effect on how employees interact, how they see themselves at work, and how they perform their job responsibilities. As we show, algorithmic transparency influences not only employees’ worklife but also the general positionality of the workforce in the wider political economy. We conclude by arguing in favor of greater algorithmic regulation.

Opis:
The current legislation imposes an obligation on power system operators to regularly determine and publish connection capacities of transmission and distribution network nodes. Currently, the coherent node method is used for determining the connection capacity of transmission and distribution network nodes. However, this method has some limitations that do not allow clearly determining the sought power values, determining the connection capacity of the nodes in the analysed network. This paper proposes a method for determining the connection capacity of nodes in any closed HV network using black-box optimization. Calculations and analyses were performed for a full non-linear model of the Polish NPS. The results obtained show the possibilities of using this method for any configuration of nodes to be analysed, without the need for division into coherent groups. The proposed method shows the possibility of including any limitations relevant to the correct operation of the system in the calculations, such as: allowable voltage levels, allowable line load, maximum short-circuit power in the network nodes or emergency states (n-1) of the system’s operation.

Opis:
Trajectory optimization problems with black-box represented objective functions are often solved with the use of some meta-heuristic algorithms. The aim of this paper is to show that gradient-based algorithms, when applied correctly, can be effective for such problems as well. One of the key aspects of successful application is choosing, in the search space, a basis appropriate for the problem. In an experiment to demonstrate this, three simple adaptations of gradient-based algorithms were executed in the forty-dimensional search space to solve the brachistochrone problem having a blackbox represented mathematical model. This experiment was repeated for two different bases spanning the search space. The best of the algorithms, despite its very basic implementation, needed only about 100 iterations to find very accurate solutions. 100 iterations means about 2000 objective functional evaluations (simulations). This corresponds to about 20 iterations of a typical evolutionary algorithm, e.g. ES(μ,l ).

Reliable comparison of optimization algorithms requires the use of specialized benchmarking procedures. This paper highlights motivations which influence their structure, discusses evaluation criteria of algorithms, typical ways of presenting and interpreting results as well as related statistical procedures. Discussions are based on examples from CEC and BBOB benchmarks. Moreover, attention is drawn to these features of comparison procedures, which make them susceptible to manipulation. In particular, novel application of the weak axiom of revealed preferences to the field of benchmarking shows why it may be misleading to assess algorithms on basis of their ranks for each of test problems. Additionally, an idea is presented of developing massively parallel implementation of benchmarks. Not only would this provide faster computation but also open the door to improving reliability of benchmarking procedures and promoting research into parallel implementations of optimization algorithms.

The fuel cells are energy sources which can play an important role in transition of the energy sector into broader use of renewable energy. Numerical modelling provides an easy way to investigate properties of the objects modelled. There are various ways to model dynamic behaviour of the PEM fuel cells including methods using artificial neural networks. There are no clear rules of how a neural network should be configured: how many neurons in the hidden layer and which training algorithm should be used. In a time series modelling task additional parameters including sampling frequency, learning data set duration and number of past data points used for training need to be determined. The paper presents results of research on the influence of various model parameters on the PEM fuel cell modelling accuracy.

Numerous practical engineering applications can be formulated as non-convex, non-smooth, multi-modal and ill-conditioned optimization problems. Classical, deterministic algorithms require an enormous computational effort, which tends to fail as the problem size and its complexity increase, which is often the case. On the other hand, stochastic, biologically-inspired techniques, designed for global optimum calculation, frequently prove successful when applied to real life computational problems. While the area of bio-inspired algorithms (BIAs) is still relatively young, it is undergoing continuous, rapid development. Selection and tuning of the appropriate optimization solver for a particular task can be challenging and requires expert knowledge of the methods to be considered. Comparing the performance of viable candidates against a defined test bed environment can help in solving such dilemmas. This paper presents the benchmark results of two biologically inspired algorithms: covariance matrix adaptation evolution strategy (CMA-ES) and two variants of particle swarm optimization (PSO). COCO (COmparing Continuous Optimizers) – a platform for systematic and sound comparisons of real-parameter global optimization solvers was used to evaluate the performance of CMA-ES and PSO methods. Particular attention was paid to the effciency and scalability of both techniques.

Process of development of vehicles is nowadays preceded by extensive modelling tests, which allow evaluating influence of applicable design solutions on future utilitarian parameters of the vehicle. Here, estimation of vehicle's dynamics by measuring of acceleration time from 0 to 100 km/h can be an example. Similar, maximal speed, pollutants emission or fuel consumption under speciflc conditions of vehicle's operation can be the example. Modelling research allow to shorten time of introduction of new vehicle for production significantly. Most eager group of model used in simulation tests of vehicles, according to short time of calculation, is black box models. They do not take into consideration they cyclic type of operation, however, it is possible to identify fast and simple their coefficients. This work involves description of reciprocating engine tests, which have been done under transient and steady-state conditions. Transient conditions were forced by rapid change of engine control signal. During the tests differences of torque generated by engine under transient and steady-state conditions have been registered for the same control signal. Basing on the received results a new algorithm of transient torque calculation has been proposed. In the presented model value of the transient torque has been combined with the engine control signal and others engine parameters, which deser ibe transient history of the engine. Hence, iterative procedures of the transient torque calculation with declared time step have been implemented.

There are many case studies showing the benefits of the conceptual framework of Actor– Network Theory (ANT). It is enough to mention the classic texts by Bruno Latour on the Amazon forest and Michel Callon on scallop fishing. However, there are not many case studies discussing the circulation of knowledge in the humanities with the use of vocabulary taken from ANT. This text tries to partially fill the gap, analyzing a case encompassing the areas of both literary studies and philosophy. The main topic of the paper is the circulation of Jacques Derrida’s views – or the views attributed to Derrida – as exemplified by one of his theses. The purpose of the text is not to reflect on the value of Derrida’s reflections, but only to show how the knowledge of his thought spread from France, through the USA, to Poland, from the 1960s to the beginning of the 21st century. Besides proving that the ANT vocabulary is suitable for studying the phenomenon of the circulation of knowledge in the humanities, the case study also shows that this vocabulary should be enriched. The author of the text proposes the concept of symbolization to better understand how Derrida and the ideas attributed to him have been perceived in various texts.

A dynamic programming-based algorithm adapted to on-board heterogeneous computers for simulation-based trajectory optimization was studied in the context of high-performance sailing. The algorithm can efficiently utilize all OpenCL-capable devices, starting the computation (if necessary, in single precision) on a GPU and finalizing it (if necessary, in double-precision) with the use of a CPU. The serial and parallel versions of the algorithm are presented in detail. Possible extensions of the basic algorithm are also described. The experimental results show that contemporary heterogeneous on-board/mobile computers can be treated as micro HPC platforms. They offer high performance (the OpenCL-capable GPU was found to accelerate the optimization routine 41 fold) while remaining energy and cost efficient. The simulation-based approach has the potential to give very accurate results, as the mathematical model upon which the simulator is based may be as complex as required. The black-box represented performance measure and the use of OpenCL make the presented approach applicable to many trajectory optimization problems.

As the sociology of scientific knowledge has revealed, research fields may frequently maintain or legitimize hypotheses independently or in the absence of experimental data or other empirical evidence constituting conclusive scientific proof in accordance with declared methodological standards. This essay aims to show certain of the mechanisms and social factors that allow scientific discourse to function as a self-referential system, i.e., in an autonomous manner in regards to the border conditions of empirical experience, as described by W. Quine. I particularly concentrate here on how the organization of scientific work in selected disciplines can result in the local findings of individual laboratories being quickly transformed into unrevisable facts (black boxes). The phenomenon of the self-reference of scientific discourse is well illustrated by the case of the debate on the cause of AIDS. This discourse was so configured that by referring to one another and by theoretical imputation researchers caused the hypothesis on the causal relation between HIV and AIDS to begin to be accepted as an indisputable fact, even though the corroborating evidence had not appeared in the meantime.

In this study, the potential of the so-called black-box optimisation (BBO) to increase the efficiency of simulation studies in power engineering is evaluated. Three algorithms (“Multilevel Coordinate Search” (MCS) and “Stable Noisy Optimization by Branch and Fit” (SNOBFIT) by Huyer and Neumaier and “blackbox: A Procedure for Parallel Optimization of Expensive Black-box Functions” (blackbox) by Knysh and Korkolis) are implemented in MATLAB and compared for solving two use cases: the analysis of the maximum rotational speed of a gas turbine after a load rejection and the identification of transfer function parameters by measurements. The first use case has a high computational cost, whereas the second use case is computationally cheap. For each run of the algorithms, the accuracy of the found solution and the number of simulations or function evaluations needed to determine the optimum and the overall runtime are used to identify the potential of the algorithms in comparison to currently used methods. All methods provide solutions for potential optima that are at least 99.8% accurate compared to the reference methods. The number of evaluations of the objective functions differs significantly but cannot be directly compared as only the SNOBFIT algorithm does stop when the found solution does not improve further, whereas the other algorithms use a predefined number of function evaluations. Therefore, SNOBFIT has the shortest runtime for both examples. For computationally expensive simulations, it is shown that parallelisation of the function evaluations (SNOBFIT and blackbox) and quantisation of the input variables (SNOBFIT) are essential for the algorithmic performance. For the gas turbine overspeed analysis, only SNOBFIT can compete with the reference procedure concerning the runtime. Further studies will have to investigate whether the quantisation of input variables can be applied to other algorithms and whether the BBO algorithms can outperform the reference methods for problems with a higher dimensionality.

This paper considers the black-box approximation problem where the goal is to create a regression model using only empirical data without incorporating knowledge about the character of nonlinearity of the approximated function. This paper reports on ongoing work on a nonlinear regression methodology called IBHM which builds a model being a combination of weighted nonlinear components. The construction process is iterative and is based on correlation analysis. Due to its iterative nature, the methodology does not require a priori assumptions about the final model structure which greatly simplifies its usage. Correlation based learning becomes ineffective when the dynamics of the approximated function is too high. In this paper we introduce weighted correlation coefficients into the learning process. These coefficients work as a kind of a local filter and help overcome the problem. Proof of concept experiments are discussed to show how the method solves approximation tasks. A brief discussion about complexity is also conducted.
