Opis:: This paper addresses sampling issues arising in the context of household-based child labour surveys. It presents some of the sampling strategies elaborated in the ILO book Sampling for Household-based Surveys of Child Labour (Verma, 2008). A typology of surveys of child labour is identified, and the fundamental distinction between two types with very different objectives - termed 'child labour surveys' and 'labouring children surveys', respectively - is clarified and emphasised. Following a broad survey of national practices in conducting surveys of child labour, linkages between different types of surveys and some specific sampling techniques are explained.

Opis:: The COVID-19 pandemic has caused various disruptions in the production chains of Multinational Enterprises (MNEs). Among other disruptions there is a drop of product sales, often due to lock-down measures, which resulted in last-minute order cancellations, non-payment of the already purchased resources and already made products, and hence terminations of employment contracts. International organisations and nongovernmental organisations have called upon MNEs to take their corporate social responsibility (CSR) and honour the contracts. The aim of this article is to analyse to what extend this moral appeal is also a (quasi-)legal appeal following from international norms on CSR. After an assessment of the main labour law problems caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, an analysis follows on each of the identified problems. The conclusion of the analysis is that MNEs indeed are not only morally obliged to take their responsibility, but also based on the (quasi-)legal international CSR norms.

Opis:: As a result of the need for companies to manage occupational health and safety, as well as the absence of a globally accepted international standard, numerous organisations have developed their own models in the shape of guides, standards, or guidelines. However, the resultant dispersion is creating confusion among companies, rather than making life easier for them. In this article, we look at the current situation as far as available European management systems are concerned, and the emergent trends in the development of an international standard. Moreover, we present the special case of Spain, whose broad legislation on occupational health and safety might hinder the adoption of an international model by Spanish companies.

Opis:: Although the ILO has been in existence for over a century, it is not equipped with international mechanisms for enforcement of the labour standards that it promotes. Globalization and trade liberalization have exposed a strong relationship between labour rights and trade regulation, leading to attempts to regulate labour provisions in a trade context, initially through the WTO and, more recently, through labour clauses in bilateral and regional free trade agreements (FTAs). This contribution provides a historical overview of these attempts and presents most recent developments, which reflect a new policy of the United States and the European Union to use their FTAs as a stronger instrument of labour standards enforcement.
Mimo że ILO istnieje od ponad wieku, nie jest ona wyposażona w mechanizmy międzynarodowe do egzekwowania standardów pracy, które promuje. Globalizacja i liberalizacja handlu uwidoczniły silne powiązanie między prawami dotyczącymi pracy i przepisami dotyczącymi handlu, co doprowadziło do prób uregulowania przepisów odnoszących się do pracy w kontekście handlu, początkowo przez WTO, a ostatnio na mocy klauzul dotyczących pracy w dwustronnych i regionalnych umowach o wolnym handlu (FTA). Niniejszy artykuł stanowi historyczny przegląd tych prób i przedstawia najnowsze opracowania, które odzwierciedlają nową politykę Stanów Zjednoczonych i Unii Europejskiej wykorzystywania swoich umów o wolnym handlu jako mocnego narzędzia do egzekwowania standardów pracy.

Opis:: Seafaring is one of the world's most difficult professions. Seafarers have to face with many negative factors while they are at sea. These negative factors, makes the seafaring profession difficult to be preferred. Fatigue, stress, heavy weather conditions and lack of communication are some of these factors that affect seafarer’s occupational continuity and also make contribution to occurrence of marine accidents. Cadet is one of the seafarers who will be a navigation officer and captain in the near future. That’s why cadets have a significant role in maritime industry. Theoretical and practical training of cadets is very important. Purpose of this study was to examine deck cadets’ training conditions and difficulties they have to face with during their training period. In order to identify these difficulties, render their lives during trainings easier, and establish their expectations, questionnaire conducted with 618 deck cadets. Interviews were carried out with 3 trainers and 10 maritime companies that have substantial shares in Turkey’s maritime trade. As a result of this study identified factors that increase fatigue mostly, reduction measures have been exposed and have tried to offer solutions. This study is an advisory to improve the occupational continuity of cadets in the profession.
