Opis:
Styrax is a gorgeous species combined with high medicinal and ornamental values, however, in- formation about its floral scents is limited. This study aimed to reveal the floral scent compounds and the dynamic changes in the flowering process of Styrax japonicus, S. grandiflora and S. calvescens. Static headspace solid-phase microextraction coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was adopted in the pres- ent study. The results showed that 24, 22 and 22 volatile compounds were present at three flowering stages, among which linalool, ocimene, α-pinene and germacrene D dominated in different species. Terpenes were the main floral scent compounds in all species, whereas there was considerable relative content of ketones in S. japonicus. Among the major terpenes, α-pinene, ocimene and myrcene were the common volatiles in these species, while β-elemene and allo-ocimene were the specific volatiles in S. japonicus and S. calvescens, respec- tively. The highest content of terpenes occurred at initial flowering stage in three species. The differences in the type and content of principal compounds contributed to the fragrance diversity among these species. A solid foundation for understanding the complexity of volatile emission could be obtained from our findings, meanwhile, effective utilization of abundant terpenes in flowers of Styrax species should be applied.

Opis:
Aromatic plant species present in the natural Park of Tuscany Archipelago are used as flavoring agents and spices, as dietary supplements and in cosmetics and aromatherapy. The plants are usually collected from wild stands, inducing a depletion of the natural habitat. Therefore, micropropagation of these aromatic plants can play a role in the protection of the natural ecosystem, can guarantee a massive sustainable production and can provide standardized plant materials for diverse economical purposes. The aim of this study is to compare the volatile organic compounds produced by the wild plants with those from in vitro plantlets using headspace solid phase micro-extraction (HS-SPME) followed by capillary gas-chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Typical plants of this natural area selected for this work were Calamintha nepeta L., Crithmum maritimum L., Lavandula angustifolia L., Myrtus communis L., Rosmarinus officinalis L., Salvia officinalis L. and Satureja hortensis L. Different explants were used: microcuttings with vegetative apical parts, axillary buds and internodes. Sterilization percentage, multiplication rate and shoot length, as well as root formation were measured. The volatile aromatic profiles produced from in vitro plantlets were compared with those of the wild plants, in particular for C. maritimum, R. officinalis, S. officinalis and S. hortensis. This study indicated that the micropropagation technique can represent a valid alternative to produce massive and sterile plant material characterised by the same aromatic flavour as in the wild grown plants.

Opis:
The essential oils (EOs) and static headspaces (HSs) of in vitro plantlets and callus of Mentha x piperita were characterized by GC-MS analysis. Leaves were used as explants to induce in vitro plant material. The EO yields of the in vitro biomass were much lower (0.1% v/w) than those of the parent plants (2% v/w). Many typical mint volatiles were emitted by the in vitro production, but the callus and in vitro plantelet EOs were characterized by the lack of both pulegone and menthofuran. This was an important difference between in vitro and in vivo plant material as huge amounts of pulegone and menthofuran may jeopardise the safety of mint essential oil. Regarding the other characteristic volatiles, menthone was present in reduced amounts (2%) in the in vitro plantlets and was not detected in the callus, even if it represented the main constituent of the stem and leaf EOs obtained from the cultivated mint (26% leaves; 33% stems). The M. piperita callus was characterized by menthol (9%) and menthone (2%), while the in vitro plantlet EO showed lower amounts of both these compounds in favour of piperitenone oxide (45%). Therefore, the established callus and in vitro plantlets showed peculiar aromatic profiles characterized by the lack of pulegone and menthofuran which have to be monitored in the mint oil for their toxicity.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to determine the effect of the addition of extractive substances on the VOC emission of lacquer products in the liquid state. Three water-soluble acrylic resin products were investigated using the stationary phase microextraction technique in combination with gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (SPME-GC/MS). The extraction of volatile compounds was analysed at three temperatures: 22 ℃, 35 ℃ and 45 ℃. 20 μg of an extract obtained from the leaves, branches and bark of black cherry (Prunus serotina Erhr.) were added to commercial products. Flavonoids accounted for almost 75% of the total phenols in the used extract. The spectrum of volatile compounds emitted by the liquid coating products selected for the studies was examined before and after adding the extract to them. It was found that the addition of black cherry extract caused a significant reduction in the emissions of volatile compounds emitted by the researched products. The compounds, whose amounts did not decrease under the influence of the addition of the extract, were esters of propenoic acid. The applied extract was a source of emissions from an additional compound: benzaldehyde. The total VOC emissions of the investigated liquid coating products was reduced by 8-55% and depended on the extraction temperature. The paper also proposes the mechanism of chemical reactions between phenolics and VOC, which may cause the reduction in VOC emissions from lacquer products. The IBM RXN tool was utilised to find possible reactions.

Opis:
Fixation is a necessary tea processing step that affects the quality of tea, including its aroma. However, there are no guidelines to follow whether the Cyclocarya paliurus leaves need to be fixated to produce tea. The aim of this study was to determine the volatile metabolites in fixated and unfixated C. paliurus tea by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in order to identify the volatile compounds that differentiate them and establish the key aroma compounds. Compared with the unfixated tea, the fixated tea had higher contents of amines, phenols, nitrogen compounds, ether, alcohol, terpenoids, ester and aromatics. A total of 147 metabolites that differentiated both types of teas were identified using principal component analysis (PCA) and orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA). Among them, 22 and 25 volatile compounds of teas processed without and with fixation, respectively, had relative odor activity values greater than 1. These metabolites had green, fruity, sweet, woody, herbal, floral, fresh, spicy, earthy and waxy odor. This study showed that fixation technology improved the quality of C. paliurus tea, which provided the basis for the production of C. paliurus tea, and promoted the standardization of the preparation technology of C. paliurus tea.

Opis:
The paper presents results of the analysis of the volatile compounds arising from the production processes in a brewery. The investigated material comprised the unhoped brewer’s wort which was taken from the fermentation tanks during the industrial process. The identification of volatile compounds was conducted with the use of Solid-Phase MicroExtraction (SPME) technique by extracting the compounds from the headspace of the brewer’s wort (HS-SPME). The procedure was optimized by modifying the parameters potentially influencing the process efficiency. The analytes adsorbed on the fibers were subsequently placed in the injector of a gas chromatograph, where they were released in the course of thermal desorption. Three types of fibers were chosen for the experiments: 65 μm PDMS/DVB, 50/30 μm DVB/CAR/PDMS and 100 μm PDMS. The greatest number of peaks corresponding to compounds found in the examined material was observed on the 50/30 μm DVB/CAR/PDMS fiber while the lowest was identified on the 100 μm PDMS fiber. The detected compounds are mainly the derivatives of aliphatic, alicyclic and aromatic hydrocarbons with different functional groups e.g. carbonyl, aldehyde or ester and possessing O-heteroatom in their structure.
