Opis:
Introduction. Flat foot is still a controversial topic. As of yet, there are no unified definitions of this deformation. Aim. To assess the correlation between the longitudinal arch of the foot and hindfoot valgus in school-age children. Material and methods. A total of 362 pupils, 183 girls aged 10.96 ± 0.78 yrs and 179 boys aged 10.89 ± 0.78 yrs, participated in the study. Their height and weight were measured and their Body Mass Index (BMI) weight status was categorized. The Arch Index (AI) was used to assess the longitudinal arch of the foot. Hindfoot valgus was measured by a goniometer and defined as the angular deviation between the tibial anatomical axis and the calcaneus longitudinal axis. Results. About 1/3 of the participants had hollow feet and about a fifth of them had flat feet. No correlations between the longitudinal arch of the foot and the hindfoot valgus were discovered; however, a correlation between excessive weight and the longitudinal flat foot was revealed. No correlations between BMI and hindfoot malalignment were found. Conclusion. Hindfoot valgus was prevalent in a considerable proportion of boys and girls with the flat, normal and hollow foot. Therapeutic correction of valgus feet should be varied and should depend on the quality of the longitudinal arch of the foot

Background. The measurement of salivary ghrelin and leptin concentrations can be a valuable diagnostic tool for assessing children’s nutrition. Material and methods. The study was conducted in a group of children aged 10-13 years in selected elementary schools in the Silesia Province, Poland. Biological material (saliva) was collected from the study children and anthropometric measurements were taken. Collected saliva was subjected to ELISA analysis. Using the obtained anthropometric data, Body Mass Index was calculated, nutritional status of children was determined based on growth charts. Statistical analyses were performed to evaluate the collected data. Results. A total of 111 children (48 girls and 63 boys) participated in the study. Normal body weight was observed in 55% of boys and 66% of girls; overweight was observed in 21% of girls and 27% of boys and obesity in 12.5% of girls and 14.3% of boys. Ghrelin concentrations in the whole study group correlate significantly with leptin concentrations (Pearson’s r=0.45; p=0.001). Body Mass Index, body weight, waist circumference, as well as hip circumference are statistically associated with ghrelin (p=0.001) and leptin (p=0.001) levels. Conclusions. The factor influencing salivary concentrations of ghrelin and leptin is body weight, whereas gender has no effect on the concentrations of the compounds in question. Body Mass Index values, body weight, height, waist circumference, hip circumference, and waist/hip ratio correlate with salivary concentrations of ghrelin and leptin.

Schistosomiasis is the major source of morbidity in Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia. It is estimated that 207 million people are infected, of which 97% are in Africa. The aim of this study was the determining of prevalence as well as the phylogeny of S. haematobium among school children in Argungu Emirate, Kebbi State Nigeria. A total of 325 urine samples was collected from school children between 7 to 14 years. S. heamatobium eggs was examined under dissecting microscope and DNA was extracted from urine sample and COX1 gene was amplified by nested PCR. The PCR products were purified, sequenced and analysed. This study showed a prevalence of 32.09%, with male pupils having the highest prevalence. S. haematobium infections in children who fetch water in the river have 24 times higher risk of being infected while those who bath in the river have 158 times higher risk of being infected. Our sequences were phylogenetically related to S. haematobium isolate U82266 from Kenya and consistence with the predominant species in Africa. This was the first S. haematobium and S. mansoni co-infection reported in Nigeria. S. haematobium infection is prevalent among school age and significantly associated with water contact.

Introduction: The increasing burden of undernutrition and overnutrition at both ends of the nutrition spectrum in children are often accompanied by adverse consequences in school performance. Children with poor nutritional status had lower scores on tests of cognitive functioning, lower activity levels, and poorer psychomotor development, whereas severe malnutrition often leads to impaired psychological and intellectual development. Purpose: To investigate the relationship between children’s nutritional status, their socioeconomic background as well as their parents’s beliefs, attitudes and practices in child feeding with their academic achievement in school. Materials and methods: Anthropometric measure-ments and socioeconomic background information were collected from systematically selected school children aged 10 to 12 years old (n=309), while information regarding parental child feeding practices were obtained via a set of self-administered questionnaire. Results: Based on the World Health Organization (WHO) growth charts, 10.7% and 18.1% of the children were thin and overweight or obese, respectively. Results also showed that children’s nutritional status, household socioeconomic background and parental child feeding beliefs and practices were interrelated with the children’s academic achievement. Conclusion: These findings justified the need for relevant health and nutrition interventions in schools, especially the children of bottom billion community living in the rural areas.

Objectives: The aim was to study the body image of Spanish children and adolescents, and the differences in body image according to the quality of diet and the physical activity performed by school children. Methods: A total of 1450 Spanish school children participated (719 boys and 727 girls), between 3 and 18 years of age (11.7 ± 2.5). The body image was measured with the Stunkard silhouettes. The quality of the diet was evaluated using the KIDMED questionnaire. Physical activity was assessed using the PACE questionnaire. Findings: Subjects who did enough physical activity and had a better quality diet had a better body image than those who did not perform physical activity and needed to improve their diet. These differences were significant (p<0.05) by level of physical activity, but not by quality of the diet. Conclusions: The results of this study showed that the quality of the diet and a regular practice of physical activity could be determining factors of body image. It is recommended to carry out intervention programs to improve diet and physical activity and, in consequence, ameliorate the body image of Spanish children and adolescents.

Methods: 230 Spanish school children participated (104 boys and 126 girls), between 3 and 15 years old with an average age of 9.05 ± 3.10 years. The body image was measured by the Stunkard silhouettes. The level of muscular strength was evaluated by manual dynamometry (Takei TKK 5101 dynamometer). The statistical analysis was carried out with SPSS 23.0. Findings: Significant positive correlations were found between the current body image and the level of muscular strength of the dominant side (r = 0.182, p=0.027), non-dominant side (r=0.155, p = 0.002), and average strength (r = 0.171, p = 0.015) of Spanish schoolchildren. According to sex, significant correlations were found between body image and strength in both boys and girls. According to age, the significant correlations between body image and strength were found in the Secondary Education group (12-15 years). Conclusions: The results of this study show that muscle strength can be a determining factor in the perception of body image of children and adolescents. It is recommended to carry out intervention programs with the aim of improving strength, because this will have positive effects on the body image of the participants.

Verbal fluency (VF) is a good indicator of a child’s academic prowess and later academic success. The goal of the present study was to examine the association between VF and inhibitory control. An additional goal was to examine the developmental trajectories of VF in relation to the grade and gender of the children. The sample for this study consisted of 210 children attending grades 1 to 3. Children’s performance was measured on two VF tasks: semantic fluency and phonological fluency. As a measure of inhibitory control we used a number of commission errors committed on the Multiple Choice Reaction Test. The results of this study indicate the lack of association between VF and inhibitory control. Children improved significantly in VF from grade 1 to grade 3. In relation to gender, girls outperformed boys on the test of phonological fluency but not on the test of semantic fluency. Given the importance of VF, these skills need to be tackled during the elementary school period and even earlier in preschool.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to observe the importance of sport activities among 5th grade pupils in the canton of Schwyz (located in Central Switzerland) and to identify possible differences between children of various nationalities. The cross-sectional study was carried out in 30 randomly selected classes during the school year 2015/2016. The sample (n = 468) consisted of 52.8 % boys and 47.2 % girls, aged 10.8+0.7 years old. Socio-demographic characteristics, interests and participation in sports were established using a standardized questionnaire. The majority of the observed primary school children (85.7%) participate regularly in sports. Approximately 5 hours of sports are practised on average per week; about 18 % are engaged in such activities for more than 7 hours. The percentage of fully sport-abstinent children is around 3.5 %. In accordance with other studies, the influence of immigration backgrounds seems to be mainly moderated by gender. While boys with foreign or Swiss origin are equally enthusiastic about sports, there is clearly a lower level of participation in sports in general and especially in sports clubs among girls who come from an immigrant background. Therefore, they should be considered one of the important target groups for exercise promotion programs.

The aim of this acoustic study is to analyse the phoneme [ṭ] produced by school children surgically operated on for the cleft palate or cleft lip, in order to examine their vocal characteristics, to provide speech therapists with numerous concrete analyses of voice and speech, to effectively support them and to prevent some serious outcomes on their psychological and academic development. The motivation for this study was mainly stemming from the difficulties that Algerian schoolchildren with clefts encounter in the pronunciation of this phoneme. To carry out the study, several acoustic parameters were investigated in terms of the fundamental frequency F0, the first three formants F1, F2, and F3, the energy E0, the Voice Onset Time (VOT), the durations [CV] and [V] of the subsequent vowel [a]. For the analysis, further important parameters in the field of pathological speech were deployed, namely the degree of disturbance of F0 (jitter), the degree of disturbance of intensity (shimmer) and the HNR (Harmonics to Noise Ratio). Results revealed disturbance in the values of F1, F2, and F3 and stability in the values of F0. Another important reported aspect is the increase in the value of the VOT due to the difficulties in controlling the plosives’ successive closure and release.

Objectives To investigate the effect of CO₂ during sleep on next-morning cognitive performance in young schoolchildren, the authors performed a double-blind fully balanced crossover placebo-controlled study. Material and Methods The authors included 36 children aged 10–12 years in the climate chamber. The children slept at 21°C in 6 groups each at 3 different conditions separated by 7 days in a random order. Conditions were as follows: high ventilation with CO₂ at 700 ppm, high ventilation with added pure CO₂ at 2000–3000 ppm, and reduced ventilation with CO₂ at 2–3000 ppm and bioeffluents. Children were subjected to a digital cognitive test battery (CANTAB) in the evening prior to sleep and on the next morning after breakfast. Sleep quality was monitored with wrist actigraphs. Results There were no significant exposure effects on cognitive performance. Sleep efficiency was significantly lower at high ventilation with CO₂ at 700 ppm which is considered to be a chance effect. No other effects were seen, and no relation between air quality during sleep and next-morning cognitive performance was observed in the children emitting an estimated 10 l CO₂ /h per child. Conclusions No effect of CO₂ during sleep was found on next day cognition. The children were awakened in the morning, and spent from 45–70 min in well-ventilated rooms before they were tested. Hence, it cannot be precluded that the children have benefitted from the good indoor air quality conditions before and during the testing period. The slightly better sleep efficiency during high CO₂ concentrations might be a chance finding. Hence, replication is needed in actual bedrooms controlling for other external factors before any generalizations can be made.

Seventeen workshops on STEAM and Media Literacy, involving 500 children aged 3-10, their families and other community members, in a pandemic context, was the end result of the third phase of the ‘Digital Citizenship Academy’. This community-based action research project began in early 2015, in a Lisbon neighbourhood of Portugal. The workshops were planned, implemented, monitored and assessed by 29 teachers during an online training initially planned to be developed on site. Despite the Covid-19 outbreak, teachers implemented strategies to overcome the lack of resources and autonomy of many students, especially younger ones, and the training focus remained on the production of scientific, artistic, technological, but also media content. The workshops allowed the creation of media and STEAM products primarily focused on the arts, but in which science, technology, engineering and mathematics were present. Results point to the fact that STEAM projects gain in relevance when associated with Media Literacy activities, and vice versa. Although there is a general feeling that the situation resulting from the pandemic prevented the achievement of more significant results, the training course was suitable to pedagogical practices, provided an opportunity for sharing of experiences, practices and ideas, fostered cooperation and interdisciplinary, and resulted in useful resources.
