Opis:
This article sketches the complex phenomenon of the city and the diverse understanding of archaeological practice within the city, both in cognitive and social terms. Three ways of approaching the city are examined – as material and semiotic cognitive phenomenon (perceived as historical and archaeological source of knowledge about the past), as the composition of past and present social interactions (that could allow archaeology to construct an inter-subjective understanding of the importance of material meaning), and as a subject conducive to establishing ethical foundations for contemporaneous social practice that produces discourses about past social processes and present social values. Ways to connect these three domains are explored – through a reconsideration of archaeological entities and archaeological practice via theoretical propositions of: re-socialized archaeology, second degree archaeology and ethics of social consequences. The author argues that urban archaeology has great potential to become the context for rethinking the nature of archaeological enquiry and the kind of history, narratives and representations based on it.

Opis:
The Way of Tea, called chadō or chanoyu in Japanese, is a comprehensive art and philosophy, uniting a rich material culture with a spiritual tradition. Some of the teachings of chadō masters can be found in treatises like Nampōroku, or The Southern Records (17th century, ascribed to Nambō Sōkei, supposedly – a disciple of Sen no Rikyū) or in anecdote collections, like Chawa shigetsushū, or The Collection of Tea Stories Pointing to the Moon (1683). Most of the chadō masters did not leave their respective collected writings or teachings put into treatises, but many of them made the effort to express the essence of the Way of Tea in the much shorter form of tanka poems. First of all, Rikyū hyakushu, or One hundred verses of Rikyū (called also Rikyū dōka – Rikyū’s poems of the way) must be mentioned. This is a collection of one hundred tanka poems, traditionally ascribed to Rikyū himself, although most of them were known since before Rikyū’s times and attributed to Takeno Jōō. The final collection of Rikyū hyakushu, as we know it now, was assembled probably by the eleventh head of the Urasenke school of tea, Gengensai (1810–1877). Among the poems we can find some very detailed instructions on how to use tea utensils or how to understand some parts of the tea making procedures, but there are also poems endeavouring to express the very essence of the Way of Tea philosphy. Apart from poems created especially to show the understanding of tea art, many tea masters used pre-existing poems, written originally without any connection to chanoyu. One of the most famous examples is a short exchange of poems recorded in Nampōroku: to illustrate the essence of the Way of Tea Takeno Jōō used a poem by famous poet, Fujiwara Teika (1162–1241), to which Rikyū answered with a poem by Fujiwara Ietaka (1158–1237). Later, the alleged author of Nampōroku, Nambō Sōkei, continued this poetic dialogue with a tanka of his own. The aim of this article is to introduce the poems used by the tea masters and to analyse the ways of expressing the essence of the way.

Opis:
The article includes a theoretical and practical proposal for perceiving and treating material and discursive remains of using chemical weapons – wherever they still exist – as stimuli for reflection on weapons of mass destruction and as warnings. Based on the specific example of the outcomes of the archaeological and historical research conducted in the historic battlefield – the section of the Eastern Front between Sochaczew in the north and Skierniewice in the south, the following more general appeals have been formulated: – for inalienability of collecting, systematizing and interpreting source information and studies that could together make up a real and digital repository of knowledge on material and discursive remains of historical uses of chemical weapons (CW) and potentially further on of weapons of mass destruction (WMD); – for documenting, digitalising and protecting in situ remains of the past that, despite representing a challenge for contemporary people, constitute a part of important, however difficult, transnational painful heritage; – for undertaking more intense, systematic and coordinated activities to disseminate knowledge about past use of CW and about the mission and activities of individuals and organisations involved in the process of minimizing the threats of weapons of mass destruction in the modern world (such as the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons – OPCW). It is worth exploration, as well as documentation and protection (with the aid of archaeology, history, memory studies, ethnology, landscape studies, educational studies – especially on Peace Education, tourism studies etc.) e.g. by means of transdyscyplinary research and working on establishing real and virtual repositories of knowledge on CW, OPCW, outreach, education on transnational painful heritage, reflective cultural tourism, attentive travel etc. The historical gasscapes (landscape marked with gas attacks) – such as an element of the landscape of today’s central Poland, sketched in this article, that bore witness to the very first mass use of gas shells in January 1915, as well as wave attacks with poisonous chlorine (possibly combined with phosgene) in the battlefield, has been presented as particularly predestined to serve as a symbols of CW painful heritage, triggers for reflection on BMR and carriers of even though weaker and disappearing living memories. Additionally, the attention was drawn to the fact that certain activities aimed at documenting, consolidating, systematizing and disseminating knowledge about the experiences related to CW (or more broadly, WMD) should be undertaken immediately. Some disappearing material remains prove it. The area (in present days Poland) of a former battlefield, where the army of the German Empire repeatedly used chemical weapons in 1915, still conceals the bodies of – until recently – almost completely forgotten victims of CW. Hence the emphasis put on the significance of that area and other similar places as destinations for attentive travel (real and virtual) following evocative remains will not leave us indifferent and uninterested.
Artykuł zawiera teoretyczną i praktyczną propozycję postrzegania i traktowania materialnych i dyskursywnych pozostałości po użyciu broni chemicznej – wszędzie tam, gdzie jeszcze istnieją – jako bodźców do refleksji nad bronią masowego rażenia i jako ostrzeżeń przed jej stosowaniem. Na konkretnym przykładzie wyników badań archeologiczno-historycznych prowadzonych na historycznym polu bitwy – stanowiącym pozostałość po odcinku Frontu Wschodniego między Sochaczewem na północy a Skierniewicami na południu – sformułowano następujące argumenty (wykraczające poza omawiane tu studium przypadku) i przemawiające za: zasadnością i niezbywalnością gromadzenia, systematyzowania i interpretowania informacji źródłowych i badań, które mogłyby przyczynić się do zaistnienia repozytorium wiedzy o materialnych i dyskursywnych pozostałościach historycznych zastosowań broni chemicznej (CW) i broni masowego rażenia (BMR); potrzebą dokumentowania, digitalizacji i ochrony in situ pozostałości przeszłości, które są częścią ważnego, choć trudnego, transnarodowego bolesnego dziedzictwa; koniecznością podjęcia bardziej intensywnych, systematycznych i skoordynowanych działań upowszechniających wiedzę o stosowaniu broni chemicznej w przeszłości oraz celowością upowszechniania wiedzy o misji i działalności osób i organizacji zaangażowanych w proces minimalizowania zagrożeń wynikających ze stosowania broni masowego rażenia we współczesnym świecie, jak np. Organizacja ds. Zakazu Broni Chemicznej (OPCW – skrót od ang. Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons). Mogłoby to następować poprzez transdycysplinarne działania np. z udziałem archeologii, historii, studiów nad pamięcią, etnologii, krajobrazoznawstwa, pedagogiki (zwłaszcza edukacji dla pokoju), studiów nad turystyką itp.

Subjective Well-Being is related to the Big-Five and to Individualistic and Collectivistic beliefs of Polish adolescents. In the present study, we examined whether Individualism and Collectivism beliefs mediate between the Big-Five and Subjective Well-being among adolescents, young and middle-aged adults. Adolescents (N = 174, 36% men, aged 14–18), young (N = 254, 45% men, aged 19–24) and middle-aged adults (N = 252, 54% men, aged 40–55) completed the NEO-FFI, the Ind-Col20, and measures of Subjective Well-being. The three groups differed on all dimensions. Adolescents reported the highest Neuroticism, the lowest Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, the highest Individualism and Collectivism beliefs and lowest SWB. Among adolescents, SEM analyses indicated that Subjective Well-being was negatively related to Neuroticism and Agreeableness, positively to Extraversion, Conscientiousness, Horizontal Individualism, Horizontal and Vertical Collectivism. Among young and middle-aged adults Subjective Well-being was negatively related to Neuroticism and Horizontal Collectivism, positively to Openness, Conscientiousness, Horizontal and Vertical Individualism. Beliefs partially mediated the effects of traits. Relationships were different for cognitive and affective Subjective Well-being indices.

The aim of the study was to examine the effects of emotional reactivity and support from different sources for the well-being of teenagers on different stages of development. Data on emotional reactivity, perceived social support from different sources and subjective well-being (SWB) was gathered from 180 younger and 135 older adolescents. Regression analyses included emotional reactivity and social support from different sources as predictors of SWB (positive affect, negative affect and life satisfaction). Analyses showed that emotional reactivity predicted all components of SWB. Support was a signifi cant predictor for positive affect and satisfaction, but its specifi c functions depended on age group and its analyzed source. Interaction effects of support with emotional reactivity were signifi cant only among older adolescents - positive affect depended on interaction between emotional reactivity and support from friends, life satisfaction depended on interplay between emotional reactivity and support from teachers.

Background The COVID-19 disease has a negative impact on the psychophysiological health of populations worldwide, including a decrease in overall physical performance and an increase in fatigue. Fatigue was one of the main symptoms reported by patients and persisted for several weeks after infection with COVID-19. Although the phenomenon of fatigue is still poorly understood, physical activity can be a supportive factor in combating feelings of fatigue and lack of energy. The purpose of this research was to assess the physical activity (PA) and fatigue levels of teachers in Poland and the United Kingdom in the first year after the COVID-19 pandemic. Material and Methods The online research was carried out among 410 teachers from Poland and the United Kingdom. The PA level was assessed using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). The level of fatigue was measured using the Modified Fatigue Impact Scale (MFIS). Results Polish teachers, regardless of sex, are more physically active (the differences relate mainly to walking and moderate activity). When assessing the level of fatigue, there is a significant difference between men and women – the former indicate a higher degree of fatigue, with the difference between the sexes being particularly large in the Polish community. Quite clearly, there is an association between less activity (except walking) and more fatigue. All models show a statistically significant effect of total fatigue on total effort. Physical activity is not very strongly correlated with age but the level of fatigue increases with age. Conclusions The problem of teacher fatigue is unfortunately widespread. They should be encouraged to engage in as much PA as possible during the day. When planning and targeting fatigue reduction campaigns, PA should be encouraged and variables such as age, sex should be taken into account.

The present study focused on relationships between personality traits, self-efficacy, self-esteem and basic trust, and well-being in context of entrepreneurial activity. Participants were 301 unemployed people, 157 of whom had received a grant from an employment agency to start their own business. Participants completed measures of personality traits, self-efficacy, self-esteem, basic trust, satisfaction with life, positive and negative affect. To verify if beliefs about the self and about the world mediated relationships between personality traits and well-being we conducted a multiple-sample SEM. The study results confirm that the beliefs mediate relationships between personality traits and well-being. They also show that different types of beliefs serve a different function, depending on an individual’s circumstances. Among grant acceptors, self-efficacy did not impact well-being, while self-esteem and basic trust had similar functions in both groups.

The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between Big-Five personality traits, perceived self-efficacy (GSES) and dimensions of occupational burnout in accordance with Christina Maslach’s three-factor burnout model (emotional burnout, depersonalization, perceived lack of own accomplishments). Data collected among 271 teachers (82% female) aged 20–68 confirmed findings from previous research that four personality traits (Neuroticism, Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness) are correlated with burnout and that they are significant predictors for all dimensions of burnout. In addition, it was shown that GSES plays a moderating role as a buffer that protects people with high levels of neuroticism from a sense of lack of own accomplishments. It was also found that GSES plays a mediating role for the relationship between Extraversion, Conscientiousness and Neuroticism and perceived lack of own accomplishments and that it is a suppressor for the relationship of neuroticism with emotional exhaustion. The results are discussed in the context of personality theories and their possible applications.

Work in cadmium (Cd) smelter and smoking cigarettes damages teeth and oral mucosa which are protected by tissue and salivary glycoconjugates: glycoproteins, glycolipids, and proteoglycans. We worked out a rat model imitating human "environmental" and "occupational" exposure to cadmium using 5 mg Cd and 50 mg Cd/l in drinking water, respectively. In submandibulary glands of exposed to Cd rats, we found the time and dose dependent accumulation of Cd and simultanous decrease in activity of β-N-acetylhexosaminidase (HEX). In homogenates of submandibulary glands of control rats, β-N-acetylhexosaminidase showed the highest activity. The activities of α;-mannosidase and β-galactosidase were very low. None of these exoglycosidases were inhibited by Cd even at 44 mM concentration.
