Opis:
The epoxy-bonded joints are widely employed in aerospace in the Composite Patch Bonded Repair (CPBR) method used for repair metallic and composite structures. The properties of epoxy usually meet the mechanical and environmental requirements, but the durability of bonded joints depends also on the surface preparation. The most common techniques used for the surface preparation are Forest Product Laboratory’s (FPL) technique and Phosphoric Acid Anodizing (PAA). Both methods ensure very good adhesion but they have some disadvantages. They require the application of toxic and aggressive acids, dangerous for the operator. Also, the use of acids for cleaning the surfaces can cause corrosion. The sandblasting treatment of metal surfaces ensures quite good adhesion. This technique requires neither specialist equipment nor the use of toxic substances. Recommended by the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) the technique is also used by the Air Force Institute of Technology. Sol Gel is a new product developed for the treatment of metal surfaces before bonding. It is not hazardous for the operator and it does not cause corrosion due to its specific chemical composition. The article describes the behavior of bonded joints between two metal surfaces prepared using sandblasting and Sol Gel. The investigations were carried out in various environment conditions according to the ASTM Standards.

Opis:
An extensive bio-optical data set obtained from field measurements was used to evaluate the performance of an empirical (Kowalczuk et al. 2005) and two semi- analytical algorithms: Carder et al. (1999) and GSM01 (Maritorena et al. 2002) for estimating CDOM absorption in the Baltic Sea. The data set includes coincident measurements of radiometric quantities and absorption coefficients of CDOM made during 43 cruises between 2000 and 2008. In the first stage of the analysis, the accuracy of the empirical algorithm by Kowalczuk et al. (2005) was assessed using in situ measurements of remote sensing reflectance. Validation results improved when matching points located in Gulf of Gdańsk close to the Vistula River mouth were eliminated from the data set. The calculated errors in the estimation of aCDOM(400) in the first phase of the analysis were Bias = −0.02, RMSE = 0.46 and R2 = 0.70. In the second stage, the empirical algorithm was tested on satellite data from SeaWiFS and MODIS imagery. The satellite data were corrected atmospherically with the MUMM algorithm designed for turbid coastal and inland waters and implemented in the SeaDAS software. The results of the best case scenario for estimating the CDOM absorption coefficient aCDOM(400), based on SeaWiFS data, were Bias = −0.02, RMSE = 0.23 and R2 = 0.40. The validation of the Kowalczuk et al. (2005) empirical algorithm applied to MODIS data led to a less accurate estimate of aCDOM(400): Bias = −0.03, RMSE = 0.19 and R2 = 0.29. This assessment of the accuracy of standard semi-analytical algorithms available in the SeaWiFS and MODIS imagery processing software revealed that both algorithms (GSM 01 and Carder) underestimate CDOM absorption in the Baltic Sea with mean systematic and random errors in excess of 70%. The paper presents examples of the application of the Kowalczuk et al. (2005) empirical algorithm for producing maps of the seasonal distribution of aCDOM(400) in the Baltic Sea between 2004 and 2008.

Opis:
This paper presents the results of the study of the properties of epoxy-bonded joints. Depending on the parameters of cure cycles the epoxy adhesive film has got various mechanical properties. When it is possible to use cure parameters suggested in the data sheet of the adhesive film the best results are obtained. However, in aerospace applications the cure cycle depends on the thermal resistance of other aircraft elements including electrical equipment, cables, etc., and is different from the recommended in the data sheet. Composite Patch Bonded Repair (CPBR) is a special methodology, where the patch cure cycle and the bonding process must be carried out in one operation. The adhesive film cure cycle parameters depend on the prepreg cure cycle parameters. The purpose of this research is to define the influence of a prolonged cure cycle of the adhesive film on the bonded layer strength properties. The metal surface of the specimen has been prepared for bonding by sandblasting and the use of Corrosion Inhibiting Primer BR 127. The tests were performed with the use of Structural Adhesive Film AF 163-2 and two types of cure cycles: the cycle recommended by the data sheet - 121ºC/60 min and the prolonged one - 121ºC/105 min. After the cure cycle the thickness of the bonded layer was measured. Both specimens were comparatively tested during the following strength tests of the bonded layer: static breaking tests using the wedge and the shear strength investigations. The surface of the bonded layer was observed during the tests by an electronic microscope (100x, 200x), which made it possible to demonstrate the effect of the cure cycle on the porosity and observe the nature of the bonded layer damage – de-cohesive and de-adhesive.

Opis:
Original, non-separated pieces of the LiYCY cable (with multilayer metal/plastic (copper/PVC) structure) were gasified by steam in an excess at atmospheric pressure. Conversion of the gaseous stream was enhanced by catalytic bed of original granulated material, prepared from aluminosilicate (local clay) and calcium carbonate. In the process metal (Cu) preserved unchanged form of cords and braids and was quantitatively separated (49 % of original mass of the cable). Non-metal components (51 % of original mass of the cable) were converted to a slightly sintered non-metallic powder (3.3 % of original mass of the cable) and gaseous phase. Condensation of steam facilitated elimination of tars and oils as well as hydrochloride from the gas. It was estimated that only 5 % of carbon (from the cable components) was retained in the cooling/condensing line, mostly as water non-soluble phases. Efficiency of absorption of hydrochloride by catalytic bed and aqueous condensate was almost the same (but only 50 % of estimated total chlorine quantity was finally balanced).
W procesie zgazowania metal (Cu) zachował oryginalną postać linek i oplotów i został ilościowo wydzielony (49 % wag. kabla przed zgazowaniem). Niemetaliczne składniki kabla (51 % wag. kabla przed zgazowaniem) zostały przekształcone do nieznacznie spieczonego, niemetalicznego proszku (3,3 % wag. kabla przed zgazowaniem) i gazu.

One approach to developing a system of continues automated monitoring of structural health is to use elastic waves excited in a given medium by a piezoelectric transducers network. Depending on their source and the geometry of the structure under consideration elastic waves can propagate over a significant distance. They are also sensitive to local structure discontinuities and deformations providing a tool for detecting local damage in large aerospace structures. This paper investigates the issue of Barely Visible Impact Damages (BVIDs) detection in composite materials. The model description and the results of impact tests verifying damage detection capabilities of the proposed signal characteristics are presented in the paper.

Adsorption of La3+ and Dy3+ from their aqueous nitrate solutions on biohydroxyapatite (BHAP) originally prepared from raw pork bones by steam gasification of has been investigated for the La3+and Dy3+ concentrations within the range of 1.44·10–4–8.06·10–3 mol/dm3 and 2.71·10–5 5.68·10–3 mol/dm3, respectively. It was found that saturation of the lanthanide uptake occurred at 0.0625 moles of Ln3+ per mole of BHAP. Two model isotherms, i.e., Langmuir (qe = qmCe/((1/KL) + Ce)) and Freundlich (logqe = logKF + (1/n)logCe), were used to fit the adsorption data. The following isotherm parameters were found for La3+: qm = 0.1265 mol/kg, KL = 2701 dm3/mol, n = 5.61, KF = 0.283 (mol/kg)·(dm3/mol)1/n and for Dy3+: qm = 0.1223 mol/kg, KL = 3635 dm3/mol, n = 5.82, KF = 0.306(mol/kg)·(dm3/mol)1/n. A better correlation was found for the Freundlich model. A relatively high value of the n parameter in the Freundlich equation suggests heterogeneous chemisorption of lanthanide ions.

Introduction. Diabetes is a civilisation disease creating a serious challenge for public health. In Poland, approximately 2 million people suffer from diabetes, of which about 25% are unaware of their illness. A considerable part of persons with diabetes experience complications related with the disease. Objective. The aim of the study was to determine the relationship between elements of the state of health and socio-demographic characteristics of diabetic patients treated in the Diabetes Clinic at the Institute of Rural Health (IMW) in Lublin, eastern Poland, and the occurrence of depressive symptoms in these patients. Materials and method. The study was conducted in 2017–2018 among patients treated in the Diabetes Clinic at the Institute of Rural Health in Lublin, by the method of a diagnostic survey using the Beck’s Depression Inventory and an author-constructed questionnaire, as well as data from the patients’ medical records. The study included 314 patients from the Diabetes Clinic who expressed their informed consent to participate in the research. Results. The study showed that diabetes is a disease which predisposes for the occurrence of depression. The occurrence of depressive symptoms of various degrees of intensity was confirmed in more than a half of the examined patients. Among the factors which exerted a significant effect on the occurrence of depressive symptoms were: diabetic neuropathy, type 2 diabetes, high BMI value, lack of occupational activity, poor material standard, and the need to obtain assistance in daily functioning due to the fact of being ill with diabetes. Conclusions. It is necessary to implement routinely performed examinations into the diagnostic-therapeutic process to assess the state of psychological health of diabetic patients, which would allow sufficiently early application of appropriate psychological or psychiatric intervention.

Opis:
The Position Statement on the principles of nutrition for children aged 1-3 years emphasizes that proper nutrition of children at this age determines their optimal psychometric development and has beneficial effects on the process nutritional programming, which reduces the risk of diet-related diseases in adulthood. Continued breastfeeding in the post-infancy period, together with the proper introduction of complementary foods, supplies all the nutritional needs of the child. A varied selection of food products is important to balance out the diet of a child in the context of energy and nutrient needs. Attention should be paid to products not recommended for frequent consumption, due to the possibility of the early development of improper eating habits that can lead to undesirable health consequences. Due to the potential risk of deficiency, adequate intake of iron, iodine, calcium and vitamin D, as well as of n-3 PUFAs (which is often insufficient) should be provided. Adequate dietary energy and protein intake protects children against protein–energy undernutrition and is crucial for their proper growth and development. An important element in the assessment of the development of children involves monitoring their nutritional status and physical development by systematically measuring their body weight and length/height and analyzing their weight gain. It is necessary to diagnose the causes of being underweight/ overweight in children. Physical activity (such as outdoor walks, plays, and games) and healthy sleep hygiene are recommended. Physical activity, an adequate number of hours of sleep, and the quality of sleep in early childhood may improve immunity, reduce the risk of excessive weight gain, and consequently reduce the risk of obesity later in life. Other issues discussed include the functioning of the digestive system as one of the determinants of the nutrition of young children, basics of proper nutrition, risk of nutrient deficiencies and development of proper eating habits in early childhood.
