Opis:
The objective of this study was to determine the effect of Biolex-MB40 on the phagocytic activity and oxidative metabolism of peripheral blood granulocytes and monocytes in lambs. The experimental material comprised 32 lambs aged 30 ± 3 days, divided into two equal groups: control and experimental. Experimental group animals were fed a diet supplemented with the Biolex-MB40 (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) in the amount of 3 g/kg of the concentrate. At the beginning of the experiment (day 0) and on experimental days 15, 30 and 60, blood was sampled from the jugular vein to determine and compare the phagocytic activity (PHAGOTEST) and oxidative metabolism (BURSTTEST) of peripheral blood granulocytes and monocytes by flow cytometry. Based on the results of an analysis of granulocyte and monocyte phagocytic activity, statistically higher levels of phagocytic activity were observed in the group of lambs administered Biolex-MB40 than in the control animals, expressed in terms of the percentage of phagocytic cells as well as mean fluorescence intensity. Biolex-MB40 also had a positive effect on the oxidative metabolism of both granulocytes and monocytes after stimulation with Escherichia coli bacteria and with PMA (4-phorbol-12-β-myristate-13-acetate), expressed in terms of the percentage of oxidative metabolism as well as mean fluorescence intensity.

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of ß-l,3/l,6-D-glucan (Biolex-Beta HP) on the phagocytic activity and oxidative metabolism of peripheral blood granulocytes and monocytes in rats intoxicated by cyclophosphamide. The experimental material comprised 40 adult Wistar rats aged 14 weeks, divided into two equal groups, a control group and an experimental group, each of 20 adult rats, including 10 males and 10 females. In the course of 3 successive days, 20 rats from the experimental group were administered cyclophosphamide intramuscularly at a dose of 50 mg/kg body weight/day. On the 8th day of the experiment, 10 control group (K) rats and 10 experimental group (C) rats were sacrificed. Arterial blood samples were collected and diluted with heparin to determine and compare the phagocytic activity (Phatogest) and oxidative metabolism (Bursttest) of peripheral blood granulocytes and monocytes by flow cytometry. Starting on the 8lh day of the experiment, the feed of the remaining 10 rats from the experimental group (C+G) and 10 rats from the control group (G) was supplemented with Biolex-Beta HP at a dose of 50 mg/kg body weight/day for 14 consecutive days. On day 22, arterial blood samples were collected from all (C+G) and (C) group rats, diluted with heparin to determine and compare the phagocytic activity and oxidative metabolism of peripheral blood granulocytes and monocytes by flow cytometry. The results showed that Biolex-Beta HP modulated the phagocytic activity and oxidative metabolism of blood neutrophils and monocytes suppressed by cyclophosphamide in rats. The immunorestoring activity of Biolex-Beta HP was observed in this study.

Opis:
Concurrent execution of work orders in the small and medium size enterprises (SME) imposes a necessity to consider many control problems concerning systems of repetitive concurrent manufacturing processes using common resources in mutual exclusion. In many cases a production system with a given structure of the processes resource requests can be seen as composed of subsystems with n cyclic processes sharing one resource. For given sets of possible values of the processes operation execution times a problem of finding schedules guaranteeing that no process waits for access to the common resources is considered. In particular for the assigned times of the operations execution a subproblem of finding all possible starting times of work orders execution for which waiting-free schedules exist has been formulated as a constraint programming (CP) problem. The starting times derived can be used as an alternative starting times of work orders execution in case of their possible delays. A state space of the problem’s solutions has been reduced using constraints based on the necessary and sufficient conditions for existence of a waiting-free n-process steady-state schedule. An illustrative example of Mozart-based software application to the solution of constraint logic programming problem considered has been presented.

The paper presents the use of the PIV method in experimental studies on the speed distribution of oil particles contained in oil mist delivered into a cutting zone with minimum quantity (MQL). During investigations an orthogonal sample was of an aluminum alloy PA7N was machined using HS18-0-1 high-speed steel cutter. The oil mist was delivered into the cutting zone by a single spray nozzle directed at the tool rake surface. Two angular settings of the spray nozzle were applied in relation to the surface of the machined sample. Based on the images obtained by the PIV method, the distribution of the oil particles in the cutting area was determined according to the setting the spray nozzle. Studies have indicated more favorable conditions for the delivery of oil mist at the angle of spray nozzle at 85°. These conclusions were confirmed by measuring the cutting force in tangential direction to the machined surface.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to recognize the possibility of downscaling probability density function (PDF) of daily precipitation by means of canonical correlation analysis (CCA). Sea level pressure (SLP) over Europe and the North Atlantic was used as a predictor. A skilful statistical model could be used to generate projections of future changes of precipitation PDF driven by GCM (General Circulation Model) simulations. Daily precipitation totals from 8 stations located on the Polish coast of the Baltic Sea covering the period 1961-2010 were used to estimate the gamma distribution parameters, and only wet days (i.e. ≥0.1mm) were taken in the analysis. The results of the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test and comparison of empirical and theoretical (gamma-distributed) quantiles proved that gamma distribution gives a reliable description of daily precipitation totals. The validation of CCA models applied to gamma parameters revealed that the reliable reconstruction of precipitation PDF is possible only for average long-term conditions. In the case of individual months/seasons the agreement between empirical and reconstructed quantiles is poor. This study shows the potential of modelling of precipitation PDF, however efforts should be made to improve model performance by establishing more reliable links between regional forcing and the variability of the gamma parameters.

Opis:
This paper presents the results of a study aimed at determining the residual stress which results from developing the surface layer by low-pressure and conventional carburizing and grinding of 17CrNi6-6 steel. A synergistic effect of thermochemical and abrasive treatment was examined on ring samples used to study residual stress by Davidenkov’s method. Samples were subjected to vacuum carburizing and conventional carburizing, which was followed by grinding with a 38A60K8V aloxite grinding wheel and a CBN grinding wheel - RNB80/63B75V. The following cutting fluids were used during the grinding process: oil emulsion 5%, supply rate ca. 20 l/min, Micro5000 oil supplied at the minimum quantity lubrication (MQL) of ca. 25 ml/h, dry machining. The study determined the effect of the type of grinding wheel and the cooling and lubricating agent on the distribution of residual stress in the surface layer. The best effects of grinding with respect to the residual stress were achieved with flood cooling with oil emulsion and grinding with a CBN grinding wheel.

Opis:
Lactoferrin (LF) is a glycoprotein found in milk, neutrophil granules, secretions and selected organs of mammals. Lactoferrin exhibits antibacterial, antiviral, fungicidal, immunoregulatory and other functions. Although fish are devoid of this protein and its cell receptors, LF effect on the immune mechanisms of fish has been demonstrated. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of bovine lactoferrin, applied in vitro, on the activity of head kidney and spleen leukocytes in three freshwater fish species: rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), European eel (Anguilla anguilla) and weis catfish (Silurus glanis). The obtained results validate LF beneficial effect on the respiratory burst of phagocytes in rainbow trout and weis catfish despite the fact that the potential killing activity against Aeromonas hydrophila was not stimulated in any of the studied species. Bovine lactoferrin enhanced the proliferation of T-lymphocytes in rainbow trout and European eel, as well as of B-lymphocytes in rainbow trout.

Opis:
More and more attention is paid nowadays to the quality and durability of the applied cement slurries. Apart from the appropriate rheological, technological and strength parameters, the slurry should be resistant to the strongly mineralized reservoir waters. Appropriate phase composition of cement slurries, especially high CSH content is responsible for the change of pore structure in the cement slurry; the number of fine gel pores which are not available for the fluid increases and the number of capillary pores responsible for the transport of corrosive factors inside the cement slurry decreases. The use of nanosilica as an additive improving the properties of cement slurries has recently gained popularity. Bearing in mind these properties of nSiO2, there were conducted laboratory experiments on the use of organic nanosilica for cement slurries based on Portland cement CEM I 52.5 R.

Opis:
The aim of the experiment described in the paper was to determine the effect of selected conditions of abrasive machining on the size and distribution of microhardness and residual stresses developed in the technological surface layer of flat specimens made of 20MnCr5 steel. The specimens were subjected to single-piece flow low-pressure carburizing (LPC) and high-pressure gas quenching (HPGQ) in a 4D Quenching chamber, in order to achieve the effective case depth of ECD=0.4 mm. This was followed by grinding the specimens with Quantum and Vortex alumina grinding wheels made by Norton. Cooling and lubricating liquid were supplied to the grinding zone in both cases by the flood (WET) method and by the minimum quantity lubrication (MQL) method. The measurements for each specimen were made twice - after the thermo-chemical treatment and after the grinding. Microhardness and residual stress was measured by the X-ray method sin2Ψ. The final part of the article provides an analysis of the measurement results and presents conclusions and recommendations for further studies.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of HMB on selected indicators of immunity in calves. The experiment was performed on 14 calves aged 30±2 days, divided into two equal groups of control (group I) and experimental (group II) animals. The feed administered to experimental group calves was supplemented with HMB at 40 mg/kg BW, whereas control calves were administered standard farm-made feed without supplementation. Blood was sampled from the jugular vein immediately before the experiment (day 0) and on experimental days 15, 30 and 60 to determine the following parameters of immunity: proliferative response of LPS- and ConA-stimulated lymphocytes (MTT), respiratory burst activity (RBA) and potential killing activity (PKA) of phagocytes. The results revealed a significant increase in RBA and MTT values in calves administered HMB in comparison with the control group throughout the experiment. In the group of animals receiving HMB, an increase in PKA values was noted only on day 30.
