Opis:
This article takes up a theme addressed many years ago by Andrzej Bogusławski: a semantic and cultural comparison of the Polish and German terms of address “Pan” and “Herr.” Focussing on these two words, the paper seeks to demonstrate (as in a number of earlier studies, e.g. Wierzbicka 2015, Forthcoming) that despite their apparent insignificance, generic titles used daily across Europe can reveal complex and intricate webs of cultural assumptions and attitudes and provide keys to the inmost recesses of the speakers’ cultural and social world. At the same time, the paper argues that in order to use these keys effectively, we need some basic locksmith skills and it tries to show that the NSM approach to semantics and pragmatics can help us develop such skills. The explications posited here possess, it is argued, predictive and explanatory power which is beyond the reach of traditional analyses operating with technical labels such as “formal,” ”polite,” “respectful,” “egalitarian” and so on. The paper has implications for language teaching and cross-cultural communication and education in Europe and beyond.

Public health
taxonomic measure of development comparative analysis
Opis:
As an international organization the European Union pursues a range of purposes including improvement of public health, prevention of human illness and diseases as well as elimination of the sources of danger to physical and mental health. To enable effective health policies supporting actions of the member states, the data and materials which are fundamental to public health assessments are collected at the Community level. They underpin a variety of analyses necessary to evaluate changes in medical systems and determine the degree of similarity between the EU member states. This article analyses public health in Poland in relation to selected European countries. The study is based on the medical, economic and social indicators available from the EUROSTAT database. The taxonomic methods used in the study allowed ranking the sampled countries and identifying those with the highest level of public health. A more detailed assessment was based on the general presentation of health care systems in each country. In addition to Poland, the other post-socialist countries in the sample are Bulgaria, Estonia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovenia, Hungary and the Czech Republic. Importantly, the study covers the years 2004-2009, after most of the countries joined the European Union. The reason why other former Eastern bloc countries were omitted from the study was the unavailability of appropriate data in the EUROSTAT database. The paper discusses a group of developed European countries too. However, because the complicated historical past of the post-socialist countries and the socio-economic difficulties that result from it make their analysis more interesting from a comparative point of view, they are the primary group explored in this article. This article is divided into theoretical and empirical section. It begins with a short introduction. Part two presents the concept of health and public health. The third part describes key factors differentiating health systems. It briefly presents the main healthcare models, that is: the Bismarck’s, Beveridge’s, Siemaszko’s and the residual model. The fourth section refers to a grouping method based on Hellwig’s taxonomic measure of development. Part five with its scope includes a comparative analysis of public health status of selected European countries. The sixth part presents major determinants of cluster formation. The paper ends with a conclusion that summarizes the obtained results.

Opis:
The study claims that in English there is a grammatical construction, or even a family of constructions, that expresses the notion of a ‘sense of entitlement’. In sentences like Can I have my apple and cheese, please?, this notion is expressed with the pronoun my. In order to describe the meaning of this construction in a way that would be understandable not only to speakers of English but also those whose languages do not contain the word for ‘entitlement’, Natural Semantic Metalanguage is used. NSM, in the intention of its creators, allows for descriptions of languages and cultures with the use of universal and semantically simple concepts, present in all languages as lexemes or similar units. The ‘sense of entitlement’ is expressed when everyday rituals are violated, which disturbs the speaker, e.g. Would you leave me finish my breakfast?. The assumption here is that everyone has the right and wants to perform these regular, ritualistic activities. The range of potential obstacles has not been established at this stage of research but can be captured in the formula “I cannot do now what I always do at this time; this is bad; everybody can know this”.The meaning of a ‘sense of entitlement’ is connected with such words and expressions as have the right to, be entitled to, personal space, privacy, violate/disturb/interfere, which express some of the major assumptions and concerns of contemporary Anglo-culture. Especially interesting is the connection between the ‘sense of entitlement’ and justice because both are grounded in the existence of voluntarily obeyed principles. It appears that the English grammar contains an implicit understanding that everybody has the right to their personal routine that involves having breakfast (my breakfast) or dinner (my dinner) in a particular way, or e.g. reading (my newspaper). It is bad when the routine is disturbed by others.
W zdaniach takich jak Can I have my apple and cheese, please? nośnikiem owego „poczucia uprawnienia” jest zaimek my ‘mój’. Would you leave me finish my breakfast?

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this paper is to verify the hypothesis according to which the principles of corporate governance constitute an effective complement to the legal norms pertaining to the supervision over the operation of joint‑stock companies, thereby improving the quality and effectiveness of their operation. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: An analysis of the legal regulations governing joint‑stock companies reveals that, while providing a potential for further development of this organisational and legal form, they also contain areas that are ambiguous or open to abuse. Therefore, steps should be taken to close the existing legal loopholes by providing governance guidelines that would have the desired effect without burdening enterprises with excessive bureaucracy. In their work, the authors have employed the hypothetico‑deductive method. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: The present work consists of five parts. It begins with an analysis of the legal structure of joint‑stock companies and the fundamental principles of their operation justifying the implementation and observance of good practices. In the concluding part, we discuss the effects that can be achieved by companies with a higher level of corporate governance. RESEARCH RESULTS: The prevailing level of corporate culture affects the ability of national economies to accumulate capital resources, use them efficiently, and successfully monitor their allocation. This corroborates the hypothesis put forward in the present work, according to which the rules of corporate governance constitute an effective complement to the legal norms pertaining to the supervision over the operation of joint‑stock companies, thereby improving the quality and efficiency of their operation. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS: Solutions offered by corporate governance meet the market’s need for an effective tool for managing investor expectations that would be based on the thought‑out building of a stable market position for a given company rather than on dictates and prohibitions.

Goal – the purpose of the article is to present the significance and role of institutional coherence in the development and evolution of corporate governance in Poland. Research methodology – a review of the literature on examining the specificity of knowledge about the role of institutional coherence in the development and evolution of corporate governance in Poland and analysis and assessment of the changes in good practice codes in Poland. Score/results – a systemic approach to the issue of corporate governance reveals that it is a collection of both formal and informal institutions. Through mutual interac tion, corporate governance rules lead to the emergence of a relatively stable and predictable environment in which enterprises and their stakeholders can operate. Originality/value – analysis of good practice codes in Poland reveals that the process of their adjustment to the current social and cultural norms, as well as to the expectations of the market, can be positively evaluated, as evidenced by the fact that their new editions continue to be published. The provisions which appear in good practice codes year by year adequately reflect the needs and expectations of the market.

Loop stoma allows reducing the percentage of anastomotic leak and re-operation caused by this complication. Our department has performed the loop stoma on a skin bridge since 2011. The aim of the study was to evaluate the early results of treatment after the skin bridge loop stoma creation in comparison with the stoma made on a plastic rod. Both groups had 20 patients. Material and methods. The study involved 40 patients with ileostomy, operated 2010-2013. We evaluated 20 patients with a loop ileostomy on a plastic rod, compared to 20 other patients with a skin bridge ileostomy. The study included 24 men and 16 women. Median age was 68.3. All evaluated patients were previously operated due to rectal cancer. Results. It has been shown that the surgical site infection is more common in the group with a plastic rod (5 vs 1 patient). Inflammation of the skin around the stoma occurred in 18 patients (90%) in the first group, while no such complication was found in patients in the second group. The average number of exchanged ostomy wafers was 2,9 per week in the first group of patients, and 1,1 in the second group (p 0,05). Conclusions. The creation of the skin bridge stoma allows for tight fit of the ostomy appliance immediately after surgery completion. The equipment has stable and long-lasting contact with the skin, no skin inflammatory changes occur. Also the surgical site infection rates are lower in this group of patients. As perioperative patient does not require an increased number of ostomy appliance, the cost of treatment can be considered as an important aspect.

Our research note reports the results of a qualitative and quantitative evaluation of the pilot edition of the Coding Masters Junior program, conducted in 2015 by Centrum Cyfrowe: Projekt Polska. It focuses on the results of a semantic analysis for the keyword “tablet” of the IDIs conducted with parents of preschoolers. The analysis has shown, among others, that in many households tablet is seen as belonging to the domain of the child, its property (toy). At the same time, quantitative research reveals that in 26% of tablet-owning households the device is not made available to the child. This strong polarization of practices shows that tablets remain a terra incognita to a significant group of parents, one they often have no wish to explore.

There is no doubt that vitamin D plays a crucial role in the maintenance of musculoskeletal system. But the function of this ancient molecule presumably ranges far beyond hormone-like regulation, as it could be generated by simple unicellular organisms. First, we are going to discuss the role of vitamin D as a global regulator of homeostasis from a historical perspective, but later we will focus on current views and its relevance to human physiology and pathology. Three milestones are defining the impact of vitamin D on science and humanity. Firstly, discovery that vitamin D is the cure for rickets, brought us supplementation programs and rapid irradiation of this devastating disease. Secondly, detail description of photoproduction of vitamin D, its subsequent metabolism and interaction with vitamin D receptor VDR, provided mechanistic background for future discoveries. Finally, recent large epidemiological studies provided indirect, but strong evidence that optimal level of vitamin D in serum has beneficial effects on our health and protects us from multiple diseases, including cancer. Furthermore, existence of alternative pathways of vitamin D metabolism and multiple intracellular targets broadens our understanding of its physiological activities and offers new and very promising tools for prophylactics and treatment of many diseases of civilization. Although vitamin D (and its derivatives) should not be regarded as a cure-all for every human disease, its beneficial effects on the human health have to be taken under consideration.

Vitamin D plays important, pleiotropic role in the maintenance of global homeostasis. Its influence goes far beyond the regulation of calcium and phosphorus balance, as diverse activities of vitamin D and its natural metabolites assure proper functioning of major human organs, including skin. Recently, we reviewed the current understanding of vitamin D impact on human health from historical perspective (Wierzbicka et al. (2014) The renaissance of vitamin D. Acta Biochim Pol 61: 679-686). This article focuses on its functions in the skin. The skin and its appendages, creates a platform connecting and protecting internal organs against, usually harmful, external environment. It uppermost layer - epidermis in order to maintain a protective barrier undergoes a constant exchange of cornified keratinocytes layer. Its disturbance leads to development of serious skin disorders including psoriasis, vitiligo, atopic dermatitis and skin cancer. All of those dermatopathologies have a huge impact on modern societies, affecting not only the physical, but also mental state of patients as well as their social status. Furthermore, multiple human systemic diseases (autoimmune, blood and digestive diseases) have skin manifestation, thus "condition of the skin" often reflects the condition and pathological changes within the internal organs. In humans, the skin is the natural source of vitamin D, which is produced locally from 7-dehydrocholesterol in photoreaction induced by ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation from the sun. It is also well established, that the process of proliferation and differentiation of keratinocytes is tightly regulated by calcium and the active form of vitamin D (1,25(OH)2D3). Thus, the skin physiology is inseparably connected with vitamin D production and activity. Unfortunately, UVB, which is required for vitamin D production, is also known as the main cause of a skin cancer, including melanoma. Here, we are going to review benefits of vitamin D and its analogues in the maintenance of epidermal barrier and its potential use in the treatment of common skin diseases.

Introduction: The most common mechanism of post-traumatic facial nerve palsy are road accidents and falls. Treatment schemes as well as proper timing of surgery are still controversial. Aim: The aim of the study was the evaluation of the effects of surgical treatment in patients with post-traumatic facial nerve palsy. Treatment results were correlated with epidemiological factors, mechanism of injury, level of nerve damage, time of surgery and its extent. Material and methods: 9 patients with facial nerve palsy after head trauma were analyzed. In all patients complete paresis of the VII nerve occurred immediately after the injury. In 5 patients the nerve was damaged in the course of the longitudinal fracture of the temporal bone, in 3 as a result of its transverse fracture while in one woman there was no evident fracture line. In all cases, surgical treatment was performed between 4 days and 13 weeks after the trauma. In all cases transmastoid approach was used. Edema lesions of the nerve dominated in 6 patients, in two cases a bone fragment was noted along its course, in one person nerve was disrupted but primary reconstruction was not possible – the man was excluded from further analysis. The results of treatment were assessed by House-Brackmann (HB) scale 12 months after the procedure. Results: Very good (HBI) or good (HBII) recovery of facial nerve function was achieved in 2 and 4 out of 8 patients respectively. Surgical timing, the extent of surgery, patient’s age, mechanism of injury and level of nerve damage had no effect on the final outcome. Conclusions: The management of post-traumatic facial nerve palsy should be individual. The commonly accepted recommendation on surgical treatment is to undertake it in patients with immediate-onset and complete paralysis. Patients who, due to their severe general condition, cannot undergo early facial nerve decompression may benefit from delayed treatment for up to 3 months after the injury.

Purpose: The following two main research questions were addressed in this article: 1) Which employees’ interests are the most important for Ukrainian migrant workers? 2) To what extent companies ensure the interests of Ukrainian migrant workers? Since migration is often associated with precarious employment, the problems of the relationship between the form of employment and the interests of migrants were examined as well. Design/methodology/approach: For the purpose of this paper, such methods as literature survey of publications indexed mainly in Scopus database and empirical research in the form of a survey were used. The survey was carried out in 2020 in Poland and the respondents were Ukrainian workers. The research was conducted using the PAPI technique and based on a with the use of a representative sample. Findings: Empirical research shows that the most important interests of migrants (of 22 analyzed interests) are salaries adequate to duties, ensuring good occupational safety and health, and clear evaluation criteria. At the same time, the second and third of the indicated interests are mostly ensured by employers, regardless of the form of employment in which the respondents work. This leads to certain practical and theoretical implications. Practical implications: The Ukrainian population is gradually growing in Poland which results from the armed conflict and the difficult economic situation in Ukraine. Therefore, the presented research is utmost valid. Originality/value: The concept of socially responsible HRM (SRHRM) emerged as an element of CSR focused on the inside of the company (its employees treated as the most important stakeholders). Surveys devoted to the implementation of the concept of CSR are carried out mainly among employees who are citizens of the country where the enterprise surveyed is headquartered. The issue of migration is discussed rather from the perspective of such academic disciplines as economics and sociology than the discipline of human resource management. This study aims to fill the gap in research on SRHRM through examining the HRM practices in the context of migrant workers with a focus on employee interests.

Introduction: For many years, surgical treatment of otosclerosis has been a widely accepted approach. Hearing improvement following stapes surgery is sometimes spectacular, and good treatment results are obtained in many centers in over 90% of patients. However, in the subsequent years after the treatment, some patients develop permanent or progressive conductive hearing loss. Aim: The aim of the study is to present a group of patients with conductive hearing loss after the first otosclerosis surgery and to analyze the causes of its occurrence. Materials and Methods: The retrospective review covered patients who underwent the initial surgery in the years 2000–2009. We analyzed the patients’ medical records from before the end of 2019, which provided results of at least 10 years of postoperative follow-up. The group consisted of 1118 patients aged 14–82, including 802 women and 316 men. Results: Reoperations due to conductive hearing loss were performed on 93 patients, who accounted for 8.3% of the originally operated patients. They were much more common in patients after stapedectomies (19.7%) than in patients after stapedotomy (5.5%). Prosthesis dislocation was found to be the most frequent intraoperative observation (44.1%) and was often associated with erosion or necrosis of the long process of incus (28%). Less frequent reasons for hearing loss were: adhesions around the prosthesis (10.8%), too small hole in the stapes footplate (8.6%), too short prosthesis (8.6%), progression of otosclerosis (7.5%), too long prosthesis (6.4%), presence of a granuloma around the prosthesis (5.4 %), and displacement of incus (4.3%). Conclusions: Surgical treatment of otosclerosis is a widely accepted and good method. It allows to achieve an improvement in hearing in the vast majority of patients treated in this way. Unfortunately, over the years some patients develop recurrent conductive hearing loss. Reoperation creates an opportunity for finding the cause and improving hearing in the majority of cases.

Introduction: Treatment planning in T2, T3 laryngeal carcinoma is based on clinical assessment and radiological imaging. However, to delineate precise mucosal margins for transoral laser microsurgery (TLM), a high class, sophisticated endoscopy is indispensable. Narrow band imaging (NBI) which is an optical filter technology, seems to be a useful adjunctive tool in marking superficial margins. Materials and Methods: A total of 98 patients diagnosed with HNSCC underwent cordectomies and were enrolled in the evaluation. T2 and T3 stage cancer was diagnosed in 90 and 8 patients, respectively. Intraoperatively, prior to the first laser shot, all anatomical sites were endoscopically evaluated by WL and NBI. Results: In 10/98 patients (10.2%), 10 samples were taken based only on NBI findings to guarantee better delineation of superficial margins. The result of histology revealed moderate dysplasia in 4 cases (40%), severe dysplasia in 2 (20%), carcinoma in situ in 3 (30%) and hyperkeratosis in 1 (10%). Based on presented results, combined NBI/WL endoscopy reached sensitivity of 100%, specificity 98.88%, positive predictive value 90%, negative predictive value 100% and accuracy 98.98%. All patients had clear margins according to definitive histology results. Discussion: In this paper, we aimed to assess the usefulness of NBI in intraoperative imaging of laryngeal mucosa and delineation of superficial margins in patients with selected T2 and T3 laryngeal cancer treated with TLM. We proved in our study that with the support of NBI endoscopy, it is possible to increase accuracy of superficial resection margins in patients with moderately advanced laryngeal cancer (T2, T3).

Opis:
Introduction: In an average Polish person aged 35–44, more than 16 teeth have or had been affected by dental caries. Of that number, almost half of the teeth have already been extracted. Oral health behaviours contribute to this civilization disease in 50%. Such poor oral health status limits the ability of the affected people to take many social and professional roles. Objectives: To evaluate current oral health behaviours and their trends among 35–44 year old Polish people during the period of recent 30 years. Material and Methods: The data were obtained from the International Collaborative Studies conducted in 1978 and 1988 at the Nofer Institute of Occupational Medicine, Łódź, Poland, under the auspices of the World Health Organization (WHO) as well as from 3 stages of the study on Nationwide Monitoring of Oral Health Status and Its Conditioning performed in 1998, 2002 and 2010. The researchers evaluated oral health behaviours and oral health condition of 5425 subjects. Results: Despite a noticeable improvement, poor oral health behaviours are observed in 30%–40% of the adults. In the analysed period, the number of people brushing their teeth at least twice a day increased by more than 10% and the number of people using dental floss increased by 38%. Only 60% of the adults visited a dentist at least once a year. Reduced accessibility of state-run, free-of-charge dental care has caused that over 58% of Poles paid for their dental services. Every 3rd person of working age has not visited a dentist for longer than 2.5 half years, primarily due to behavioural and financial reasons. Oral health behaviours of Polish people are among the poorest in Europe. Conclusions: Despite a noticeable improvement of the behaviours, gap between the Poles and citizens of other highly developed countries is around 20 years. A health promotion programme including oral health issues, if implemented in workplaces, might considerably reduce this gap.

Opis:
Studies on insulin resistance of liver cells are often performed with the use of various hepatoma cell lines. Such an approach allows investigating selected biochemical pathways at the cellular level. However, possible modifications of metabolic processes due to the neoplastic nature of such cells must be considered. Expanding the diversity of hepatoma cell lines used in metabolic studies could deliver new data for comparison with those obtained for other cell lines and should reduce the risk of misleading conclusions. In this study rat hepatoma AS-30D cells were tested as a potential model for studies on palmitate-induced insulin resistance. It was found that insulin-induced Akt kinase phosphorylation was substantially reduced in cells incubated with palmitate at a concentration as low as 75 µM. This effect was not accompanied by excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation or increased Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) phosphorylation. Moreover, preincubation of AS-30D cells with rosiglitazone, an antidiabetic agonist of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ), efficiently prevented the palmitate-induced insulin resistance. We conclude that AS-30D hepatoma cells may be used as a model sensitive to insulin and vulnerable to palmitate-induced insulin resistance.
