Opis:
In order to investigate whether PCV2b can be transmitted across the placenta in sows thereby causing vertical infection of fetuses, six sows in 75 day of pregnancy were either intramuscularly inoculated with a PCV2b culture supernatant (n = 4) or mock infected with cell culture supernatant (n = 2). At parturition, 3 newborn piglets from each litter were randomly selected and euthanatized prior to suckling. Samples of the mesenteric lymph nodes, spleens, kidneys, hearts and lungs were collected for PCR, histopathological and immunohistochemical assays. The results showed that the newborn piglets from PCV2b-infected sows had histopathological lesions in the tested tissues. Moreover, PCV2b antigen and DNA were detected as well. These findings therefore suggested that porcine circovirus type 2b can be transmitted across the placenta of sows, thereby leading to PCV2b vertical infection of the fetuses.

Opis:
The structure of thin water films during the rupture process was investigated by a new approach, which combines molecular dynamics simulation (MDS) with image processing analysis. The analysis procedure was developed to convert MDS trajectories to readable 3D images. The water films were studied at different thicknesses by MDS to determine the critical thickness at which the film ruptures. The potential energy of each specific film thickness during the simulation time was analyzed, and the results showed that the potential energy of stable films remained unchanged while the potential energy kept decreasing for films which ruptured during the simulation time. By applying the new procedure, the molecular porosity, which is defined as the void fraction between the volume of molecular pores in the water film and the total volume of the water film, was calculated. The results of molecular porosity for different film thicknesses during the simulation time suggested a critical molecular porosity as 49%. In other words, stable films have a molecular porosity of less than 49%. If a water film has a molecular porosity greater than 49%, rupture occurs during the simulation.

Opis:
This paper describes an intelligent communication and decision support system for providing wireless services in an airport environment. A novel agent-based business model is proposed and the value chain is analysed for wireless applications. This system is studied and developed within the scope of the IST ADAMANT project, where the Athens International Airport (AIA) is used as the trial environment. First of all, a set of advanced, realistic decision support application scenarios enhancing the airport facilities both for the passengers and for the airport staff is identified. Most of the applications can be summarised as location-based personalised services. They refer both to airport internal users and to passenger users. In order to provide these services, location-sensitive service level agreements (SLAs) and radio resource management (RRM) are introduced. The design of such a system is envisaged based on a generic, multi-agent architecture, which is also presented in this paper.
