Opis:
A small-scale model experiment on the pull-out resistance of suction caissons is described. The pull-out force and suction developed within the caisson in the extraction process were recorded during the experiment. A simple breakout model, together with an elementary static formulae, is applied to predict the results obtained experimentally. There is a reasonably good agreement between the experimental results and predictions. An extensive discussion of the approach applied is included. The analysis presented in this paper is original, as it differs from other approaches mentioned in this paper, and leads to acceptable predictions. At the end, the results are also compared with another approach for predicting the capacity of suction caissons.

Opis:
The effect of selected transition metal powders (Zn, Ti, Mo and nano-Fe), in the concentration range from 0-5 wt.%, when used as activators in the highly calorific mixture Fe-KClO4 (containing 16 wt.% KClO4), has been studied. It has been established that zinc and molybdenum powders can act as factors in decreasing the activation temperature and increasing the effectiveness of the oxidant used. Titanium powder increases the oxygen conversion rate and the amount of energy released. Iron nano-powder has only a slight influence on the above mentioned parameters.

Opis:
Textural properties of iron powders obtained by reduction of iron(II) compounds and by electrolysis were determined. Their specific surfaces were 0.38 and 0.43 m2g-1 respectively, and the prevailing grain sizes amounted to 10 and 43 ?m respectively. Total content of the determined metallic impurities was 0.055 wt.% in the preparation obtained by the electrolysis while in the preparation obtained by reduction it was 0.025 wt.%. It was proved that in initial samples the α-Fe2O3 phase occurred in the outer oxide layer present on the surface of Fe grains, and below this phase a layer of magnetite was found, the thickness of which was considerably greater in iron obtained by electrolysis. Measurements of selected properties showed that modification of the iron powder surface carried out by reduction with dihydrogen led to decreasing the linear rate of burning of the high calorific mixture Fe/KClO4 but it did not affect its calorific value. Moreover, it was found that modification of the iron powder surface resulted in lowering the temperature of ignition of the analysed mixture and decreasing the quantity of the released oxygen generated by decomposition of the oxidant, which did not react with the iron powder.

Opis:
Ignition sensitivity is one of the factors defning the characteristics of high calorifc mixture with low emission of gaseous product. It was found that Zr-BaCrO4 mixture is sensitive to ignition by electric spark energy of 0.82 J, whereas activation of Fe-KClO4 mixture depends on the iron powder employed and the composition of its surface oxide layers. Energy required for the activation of high calorifc mixture in form of powder designated as FeK, FeR or FeE is equal to 0.08, 0.59 and 1.1 J, while in the form of pellet 6.92, 10.2 and 14.1 J. Activation of Fe-KClO4 mixture with a strip of heat paper as well as with the electric spark has revealed that the mixture containing iron powder obtained by atomization method (FeA) is not active.

Opis:
This paper describes a study of explosively welded, commercially pure titanium-stainless steel 316L plates. Following welding, the plates were heat-treated at the temperature of 600°C for 90 minutes. Examinations of the bond structure were carried out before and after heat treatment to investigate the processes taking place during explosive welding of materials. Observations were performed using light, scanning electron (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The mechanical properties were examined applying three-point bending tests with cyclic loads. Fractographic examination and hardness measurements were also performed. It has been found that the bonding zones are characterized by a specific microstructure, chemical composition and microhardness. The heat treatment used in the study increases the relative volume of brittle intermetallic phases, causing a reduction in fatigue strength of the joint.

Opis:
The paper has presented the results of theoretical studies and experimental tests of the plastic deformation of multi-layered Ti/Al/Mg specimens. Theoretical studies were carried out using the Forge2011® computer program. Physical modeling, on the other hand, was performed using the Gleeble3800 simulator. Cuboidal specimens were cut off from the plates obtained in the explosive welding method. Based on the obtained investigation results it has been found non uniform deformation of the particular layer as a result their different value of flow stress.

Opis:
Purpose: In comparative examinations of kinematics of the knees of humans and pigs in flexional/extensional motion under compressive loads, the significant differential geometric essentials of articular guidance are elaborated to criticise the shaping of the articular surfaces of conventional knee-endoprostheses and to suggest constructional outlines that allow the endoprosthesis to adopt natural knee kinematics. Implantation is discussed with regard to the remaining ligamentous apparatus. Methods: Twelve fresh pig knee joints and 19 preserved human knee joints were moved into several flexional/extensional positions. In each joint, the tibia and femur were repeatably caught by metal plates. After removing all ligaments, the tibia and femur were again caught in these positions, and their points of contact were marked on both articular surfaces. Along the marker points, a thin lead wire was glued onto each surface. The positions and shapes of the four contact lines were mapped by teleradiography. Results: All contact lines were found to be plane curves. The medial and lateral planes were parallel, thus defining the joint’s sagittal plane. In the human knee, as compared to the lateral, the medial femoral contact line was always shifted anteriorly by several millimetres. The tibial contact curve was laterally convex and medially concave. In the pig knees, the lateral and medial contact lines were asymmetrically placed. Both tibial curves were convex. Conclusions: Both knees represent cam mechanisms (with one degree of freedom) that produce rolling of the articular surfaces during the stance phase. Implantation requires preservation of the anterior cruciate ligament, and ligamentous balancing is disadvantageous.
