Africanism
Opis:
Since “the etymology of diaspora suggests both routes (scattering) and roots (sowing)” (Procter 2003: 14), Afro-Caribbean and Black British dub poets, as represented by Jamaicanborn Linton Kwesi Johnson, take heed of their artistic and anthropological ancestry, emphasising their shared Africanness. My paper is therefore an attempt to take a closer look at select African elements prevalent in Johnson's early literary output, namely his first two collections of poetry – Voices of the Living and the Dead (1974) and Dread Beat An' Blood (1975).

Opis:
The object of the paper is to present the works of Patience Agbabi, a Nigerian-Welsh performance poet. With a view to highlighting cultural traditions inherent in her poems, I shall focus on analysing diverse aesthetic/artistic influences manifest in her works. These, among others, include Chaucer and 1980s African-American rap lyrics. The second part of my presentation shall tackle the notion of printed performance i.e. Agbabi's scribal/typographical endeavours to stage orature, to put the oral/theatrical in writing. My paper endeavours to chart Agbabi's artistic stepping beyond the thematic barricade of committed verses of protest – characteristic of the dub poetry style and symptomatic of her debut volume – and enumerate the post-dub features of her poetry, which are present in both her volumes, namely R.A.W. (1995) and Transformatrix (2000).

Bridge inspections are a vital part of bridge maintenance and the main information source for Bridge Management Systems is used in decision-making regarding repairs. Without a doubt, both can benefit from the implementation of the Building Information Modelling philosophy. To fully harness the BIM potential in this area, we have to develop tools that will provide inspection accurate information easily and fast. In this paper, we present an example of how such a tool can utilise tablets coupled with the latest generation RGB-D cameras for data acquisition; how these data can be processed to extract the defect surface area and create a 3D representation, and finally embed this information into the BIM model. Additionally, the study of depth sensor accuracy is presented along with surface area accuracy tests and an exemplary inspection of a bridge pillar column.

Strong emotions are among others manifested in the expressive movements (facial expression). Facial expressions are natural and universal by nature. They do not depend on ethnicity, culture, social status, age, etc. Nonetheless, humans are sometimes capable of controlling their facial expressions and hiding their emotions. Simulating emotions is a fundamental acting skill. However, controlling facial impressions takes time. The onset of such a control is delayed by anything from 0.25 to even 0.1 second – the period when the authentic facial expression, adequate to the emotion is demonstrated – and therefore remains imperceptible to an external observer. This short-lived facial expression observed in that short meantime is known as microexpression. FaceReader, designed by Dutch company Noldus (established and directed by Professor Lucas Noldus), is a software package for automatic recognition and analysis of facial expression. As its diagnostic value for validity as well as reliability, that is the level of correct indications, remains unknown, we decided to determine it experimentally and have chosen to run an experiment comparing its diagnostic value with that of a traditional polygraph examination.

Social councils and committees (SCs), the topic of this volume, cannot yet be called a well-researched matter, and – whether in Poland or internationally – very few analyses have focused on them, or have done so in a more than fragmentary fashion. Although they constitute a challenging subject, among other things due to their sometimes non-obligatory character, term limits, the availability of members, and diversity, we believe they deserve academic interest as well as the attention of the public and the third sector. SCs have the potential to become an important actor of the local decision-making process. This thread was the crucial element of our research, whose aim was primarily to define the impact of SCs on decision-making, as well as to describe the character of these entities, which in our view show features of participatory and deliberative solutions. Another major objective of our research was to identify the advantages of the participation of these bodies in the local decision-making process as well as to indicate the factors that hinder or prevent their potential as the participants of this process. Introduction: Motorcycles in Poland become more and more popular also as convenient means of transport, especially in large cities. Factors influencing on driver during riding the motorcycle are assumed to cause spinal pain in motorcyclist. These factors may vary in motorcycles of different construction or purpose. Few information is available about spinal pain connected with riding a motorcycle. The aim of this study was the assessment of occurrence and intensity of spinal pain in motorcyclists depending on motorcycle type. Material and methods: The study group consisted of 2,124 motorcyclists aged 19-79 yrs., using motorcycle with an engine size bigger than 50 ccm and participating in minimum 1 riding season. An original, on-line available questionnaire composed of questions regarding riding a motorcycle and ailments of all parts of the spine was used. The results underwent statistical analysis using the Statistica 10.0. Results: The results showed that 58.4% respondents experienced pain of at least one part of spine during riding the motorcycle. The biggest percentage (51.1%) of persons with spinal pain in general was found out in cross/enduro type users. Neck pain was significantly connected with riding the sport motorcycle (p=0.001). Conclusions: Spinal pain in motorcyclists depends on the motorcycle type.

Opis:
Multidrug resistance-associated protein (MRP1) is a transmembrane pump protein responsible for the efflux of chemotherapeutic drugs, an important cause of anticancer treatment failure. Trying to circumvent MRP-mediated resistance we designed and synthesized hairpin loops forming antisense oligodeoxyribonucleotides (ODNs), both phosphodiesters (PO-ODNs) and their phosphorothioate analogues (PS-ODNs), to reduce the protein expression by targeting its mRNA in a sequence specific manner. Melting temperature measurements as well as polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis supported the preferential formation of a secondary structure, which was expected to protect ODNs against 3'-exonuclease degradation. ODNs and PS-ODNs designed in this work were successfully tested as antisense inhibitors of the expression of MRP1 in the leukaemia HL60/ADR cell line. Foreseeing the necessity to perform clinical studies with such ODNs we investigated their stability against the 3'-exonuclease activity of fetal calf serum and human plasma. Under the conditions, corresponding to physiological ones, we observed high stability of hairpin loop forming ODNs, especially those containing longer (e.g. 7 base pair) stems. Comparative studies on the stability of chemically unmodified hairpin loop forming ODNs and their PS-counterparts indicated that endonuclease activity did not play any important role in the process of their nucleolytic degradation. Our studies provide strong evidence for high stability of chemically unmodified hairpin loop ODNs, making them an attractive alternative to phosphorothioate analogues commonly used in antisense strategy.

Multidrug resistance-associated protein (MRP1) causes cellular drug resistance in several cancer cell lines. In this paper we show that antisense oligonucleotides decrease MRP1 expression in human leukaemia cells. We investigated biological activity of a series of 12 linear phosphorothioate oligonucleotides, complementary to several regions of MRP1 mRNA. The oligonucleotides were administered to leukaemia HL60/ADR cells overexpressing MRP1 protein. Then, the level of MRP1 mRNA was determined by means of semiquantitative RT-PCR and the protein level by reaction with specific monoclonal antibodies. Some of the investigated antisense oligonucleotides decrease the expression level of the MRP1 protein by 46% and its mRNA level by 76%.

Opis:
Introduction: The surgeon’s viewpoint on a patient with cystic fibrosis differs from that of a pediatrician or internist. The problems a cystic fibrosis specialist encounters are different from those faced by the surgeon who takes over the patient in a very advanced, often terminal stage of the disease. Hence, the main problem for the surgeon is the decision concerning the surgery (lung transplantation, pneumonectomy, lobectomy). It is, therefore, important to lay down fundamental and appropriate rules concerning the indications and contraindications for lung transplantation, especially in patients with cystic fibrosis. Aim: The aim of this study was to analyze the methods of qualifying and preparing patients for surgery, as well as carrying out the procedure of transplantation and postoperative short and long-term care. Material and methods: The investigation was carried out on 16 patients with cystic fibrosis. Three were operated on and 10 were on the waiting list for transplantation. Two patients on the waiting list died, one patient was disqualified from transplantation. During qualification for lung transplantation, strict indications, contraindications and other factors (such as blood type, patient’s height, coexisting complications) were taken under consideration. Results: All the 3 patients after lung transplantation are alive and under our constant surveillance. Ten patients await transplantation, though four of them are suspended due to hepatitis C infection. Two patients on the waiting list died: one from respiratory insufficiency and the other in the course of bridgeto-transplant veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation due to hepatic failure. One patient has been disqualified because of cachexia. Conclusions: Since lung transplantation is the final treatment of the end-stage pulmonary insufficiency in cystic fibrosis patients, the number of such procedures in cystic fibrosis is still too low in Poland. The fast development of these procedures is highly needed. It is necessary to develop better cooperation between different disciplines and specialists, especially between pediatricians and surgeons. The correct choice of the suitable moment for lung transplantation is crucial for the success of the procedure.
