Opis:
Complete plesiosaur skeletons are relatively abundant in the Lower Jurassic of England and Germany, but are exceptional in France. A new specimen from Normandy (northern France), including incomplete skull, palate and mandible with several associated vertebrae, is here described and its pliosauroid affinities are discussed. Comparison of this new specimen with other plesiosaurians indicates that it belongs to a new genus and species: Cryonectes neustriacus. This new plesiosaurian taxon represents one of the most complete pliosaurids reported from the Pliensbachian, a stage that has yielded very few diagnostic plesiosaurian remains. Our preliminary phylogenetic analysis places Cryonectes in a basal position among Pliosauridae, and suggests that the radiation of this clade occurred several millions of years earlier than previously thought. This new taxon contributes to our understanding of Early Jurassic plesiosaur diversity.

Opis:
Research was conducted to identify an ergonomics-based intervention model designed to factor in musculoskeletal disorder (MSD) prevention when library projects are being designed. The first stage of the research involved an a posteriori analysis of 10 recent redesign projects. The purpose of the analysis was to document perceptions about the attention given to MSD prevention measures over the course of a project on the part of 2 categories of employees: librarians responsible for such projects and personnel working in the libraries before and after changes. Subjects were interviewed in focus groups. Outcomes of the analysis can guide our ergonomic assessment of current situations and contribute to a better understanding of the way inclusion or improvement of prevention measures can support the workplace design process.

Opis:
Ichthyosaurs rapidly diversified and colonised a wide range of ecological niches during the Early and Middle Triassic period, but experienced a major decline in diversity near the end of the Triassic. Timing and causes of this demise and the subsequent rapid radiation of the diverse, but less disparate, parvipelvian ichthyosaurs are still unknown, notably because of inadequate sampling in strata of latest Triassic age. Here, we describe an exceptionally large radius from Lower Jurassic deposits at Penarth near Cardiff, south Wales (UK) the morphology of which places it within the giant Triassic shastasaurids. A tentative total body size estimate, based on a regression analysis of various complete ichthyosaur skeletons, yields a value of 12-15 m. The specimen is substantially younger than any previously reported last known occurrences of shastasaurids and implies a Lazarus range in the lowermost Jurassic for this ichthyosaur morphotype.

Opis:
Postharvest fruit loss due to spoilage is mainly attributed to fungal infections. Synthetic chemicals can be used to preserve fruits, but they are expensive and pose risks to human health. The replacement of these chemicals by safer and cost-effective biocontrol agents is now a priority. This study investigated the physiological characteristics of Pichia kluyveri and its potential use as a biofungicide. The antagonistic effect of P. kluyveri against Botrytis cinerea and Monilinia laxa was tested on yeast peptone dextrose agar, grapes, apples, and pears. Yeast growth was variably possible at different temperatures, pH, and salinity levels. Strain-dependent antagonistic responses were observed on agar plates, where M. laxa was the more sensitive fungus to the antagonistic yeast. P. kluyveri demonstrated strong physiological properties under stressful temperature, pH, and salinity conditions. Preventive applications of P. kluyveri to apples were 95% effective against B. cinerea and 100% effective against M. laxa. Fruit type-dependent responses were evident on pears. Similarly, preventive application on grapes was also effective against the fungal pathogens studied. In general, the antagonistic responses were both fungus- and treatment- (curative and preventive) dependent. Therefore, the preventive use of P. kluyveri against post-harvest fruit-fungal infections proved to be an effective method for biological control of grapes, apples, and pears against fungal spoilage organisms Botrytis cinerea and Monilinia laxa.

Opis:
The sensitivity of III-V-based infrared detectors is critically dependent upon the carrier concentration and mobility of the absorber layer, and thus, accurate knowledge of each is required to design structures for maximum detector performance. Here, measurements of the bulk in-plane resistivity, in-plane mobility, and carrier concentration as a function of temperature are reported for non-intentionally doped and Si-doped mid-wave infrared InAs₀.₉₁Sb₀.₀₉ alloy and InAs/InAs₀.₆₅Sb₀.₃₅ type-II superlattice materials grown on GaSb substrates. Standard temperature- and magnetic-field-dependent resistivity and the Hall measurements on mesa samples in the van der Pauw configuration are performed, and multicarrier fitting and modelling are used to isolate transport of each carrier species. The results show that up to 5 carrier species of the surface, interface and bulk variety contribute to conduction, with bulk electron and hole mobility up to 2·10⁵ cm²/V s and 8·10³ cm²/V s, respectively and background dopant concentration levels were between 10¹⁴ and 10¹⁵ cm¯³. The in-plane mobility temperatures dependence is determined and trends of each carrier species with temperature and dose are analysed.
