Opis:
Introduction. Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic and recurrent disease with an inflammatory background. Genetic and environmental factors are responsible for the occurrence and development of this dermatosis. Objective. The aim of the study was to assess the frequency of colonisation of the nasal vestibule and apparently healthy skin by S. aureus, and to assess dermal lesions for superinfection with S. aureus in AD patients. Materials and method. The research was performed on a population of 100 AD patients. Three smears were collected for microbiological investigations: from the anterior nares, from apparently healthy skin and from lesioned skin. On collection, the material was cultured on mediums provided by the bioMerieux and Argenta companies. The strains were identified and their sensitivity to antibiotics assessed by means of the Vitek2 system (bioMerieux). Results. S. aureus was present in at least one location in 90%. 44% presented S. aureus colonization of apparently healthy skin and within skin lesions. In the case of 23%, this particular pathogen was detected only in skin lesions, whereas 6% had a positive result within the area of apparently healthy skin. In total, S. aureus was detected in the skin of 73%. In 61%, apparently healthy skin had been colonized with S. aureus, whereas in 81% colonization was proved within the skin lesions. S. aureus was detected in the nasal vestibule of 85%. Among the group with S. aureus in their anterior nares, the pathogen was also found on the skin surface of 77%. Conclusions. S. aureus colonises skin in most AD patients. Most AD patients carry S. aureus in their nasal vestibules. S. aureus does not seem to colonise healthy skin as often as skin lesions in young people. The vast majority of S. aureus strains were sensitive to local antibiotics. Most S. aureus strains produced penicillinase.

Opis:
Introduction. Mercury release in the environment is mainly the result of human activity, particularly from coal-fired power stations, residential heating systems, waste incinerators, and as a result of mining for mercury, gold and other metals, which have led to widespread global mercury pollution. Excessive exposure to mercury is associated with a wide range of adverse health effects, including damage to the central nervous system, digestive and immune systems, and to lungs, kidneys, skin and eyes. Objective. The main aim of the study is to summarize the selected mercury sources in the environment of the Slovak Republic, regarding waste incinerators, landfill waste, crematoria, chemical plants, rivers and soils. Brief description of state of knowledge. Although the neurologic symptoms of Minamata disease were identified sufficiently for specialists to classify mercury as the causative agent, the acceptance of mercury ́s environmental impacts will require several decades of research. Several new issues have arisen – the need for energy conservation leads to the use of fluorescent lighting, which contain mercury; emissions driven by increases in coal combustion, incineration and economic development have sent more mercury into the air, soil and water. Conclusions. Mercury is toxic to human health, posing a particular threat to the development of the child in utero and early in life. The systematic analytical controls of contaminants in water, soil and air are important. The installation of modern cleaning technologies to comply with the maximum emission level can substantially minimized the environmental impact of incinerators. Since human cremation is also an increasing practice, further research on mercury emissions is necessary.

Opis:
Spin-wave resonance is a newly emerged method for studying surface magnetic anisotropy and surface spin-wave modes in (Ga,Mn)As thin films. The existence of surface spin-wave modes in (Ga,Mn)As thin films has recently been reported in the literature; surface spin-wave modes have been observed in the in-plane configuration (with variable azimuth angle $\phi_M$ between the in-plane magnetization of the film and the surface [100] crystal axis), in the azimuth angle range between two in-plane critical angles $\phi_{c1}$ and $\phi_{c2}$. We show here that cubic surface anisotropy is an essential factor determining the existence conditions of the above-mentioned surface spin-wave modes: conditions favorable for the occurrence of surface spin-wave modes in a (Ga,Mn)As thin film in the in-plane configuration are fulfilled for those azimuth orientations of the magnetization of the sample that lie around the hard axes of cubic magnetic anisotropy. This implies that a hard cubic anisotropy axis can be regarded in (Ga,Mn)As thin films as an easy axis for surface spin pinning.

Opis:
We extend the theory of spin-wave resonance (SWR) by introducing a new formula representing the surface pinning parameter as a series of contributions from different anisotropies existing in (Ga,Mn)As thin films. Comparing our theory with the reported experimental studies of SWR in thin films of the ferromagnetic semiconductor (Ga,Mn)As, we find that besides the first-order cubic anisotropy, higher-order cubic anisotropies (in the second and third orders) as well as uniaxial anisotropies (perpendicular in the first and second orders, and in-plane diagonal) occur on the surface of this material. To our best knowledge this is the first report of the existence of higher-order surface anisotropy fields in (Ga,Mn)As thin films.

Opis:
Within a Monte Carlo technique we examine critical properties of diluted bulk magnetic semiconductor (Ga,Mn)As modeled by a strongly diluted ferromagnetic Heisenberg spin-5/2 system on a face centered cubic lattice. We assumed that 5% of Ga atoms is substituted by Mn atoms and the interaction between them is of the RKKY-type. The considered system is randomly quenched and a double average was performed: firstly, over the Boltzmann probability distribution and secondly - over 2048 configurations related to the quenched disorder. We estimated the critical temperature: T_{c}=97±6 K, which is in agreement with the experiment.
