Opis:
Measurements of 1/f noise in Si and Si0.64Ge0.36 PMOSFETs have been compared with theoretical models of carrier tunnelling into the oxide. Reduced noise is observed in the heterostructure device as compared to the Si control. We suggest that this is primarily associated with an energy dependent density of oxide trap states and a displacement of the Fermi level at the SiO2 interface in the heterostructure relative to Si. The present study also emphasizes the important role of transconductance enhancement in the dynamic threshold mode in lowering the input referred voltage noise.

Opis:
This work presents a procedure for bearing degradation monitoring at an early stage. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) coupled with Tukey’s test is used to single out the suitable parameters to follow the fault size evolution ranging from 50 µm to 150µm. The Tukey's criterion is adopted in this case to study the ability of time and frequency indicators. The rotational speed, centrifugal load and fault size are considered as independent variables while the time and frequency indicators are taken as dependent variables. The experiments are performed on bearings having a fault on outer race. Based on the results of this study, the Kurtosis and Skewness show a good ability to assess the evolution of degradation in the bearings at an early stage. The paper discusses the weakness of the time and frequency indicators.

An injury risk factor (IRF), which indicates the risk of adverse health effect to lumbar rachis arising from mechanical vibrations, is developed. Experiments have been conducted that consider acceleration levels at the seat of drivers, posture, morphology, density, damping rate and body mass as independent variables. A parametric finite-element model of the lumbar rachis has been generated. It is shown that the IRF increases with ageing and an IRF of 30% is proposed as a threshold for fatigue purposes. This level is reached if a peak acceleration level greater than 3 m/s2 is applied to a light (55 kg) and an old driver with a low bone density and a damping rate of 20%. This vibration threshold must be reduced to 2.7 m/s2 if the driverʼs weight increases to 75 kg and to 2 m/s2 if the driver is heavy (98 kg).

Opis:
The article attempts to assess the usefulness of the Taguchi method to optimise the purification process of synthetic textile wastewater (pH 6.7 - 7.2, Conductivity = 6.71 - 6.84 mS/cm, Salinity = 3581 - 3648 mg NaCl/l, Colour = 560 - 4710 mg Pt/l, COD = 2220 - 2290 mg O2/l, TOC = 394 - 551 mg/l) using K2FeO4. The research was conducted using 3 types of wastewater containing anionic detergent (sodium lauryl sulfate, 100 mg/l) and differing only in the concentration of azo dye Acid Green 16 (AG 16). Technical K2FeO4 was used as an oxidiser, which was subjected to physico-chemical analysis (purity, UV-VIS spectrum, surface characteristics and chemical composition using SEM and EDX methods). For planning and optimising the wastewater treatment process, the Taguchi method was used for four input parameters: pH (2, 7, 12), reaction time (10, 30, 50 min), AG 16 concentrations (20, 120, 220 mg/l) and K2FeO4 concentrations (25, 125, 225 mg/l), for which 9 experiments were performed in accordance with the plan adopted. Test result analysis allowed to indicate the optimal values for individual input parameters (pH 2, time = 50 min, AG 16 = 20 mg/l, K2FeO4 = 125 mg/l). Under these conditions, visual discoloration of wastewater was obtained (AG 16 = 0.4 mg/l, ↓98% ), colour removal (66 mg Pt/l, ↓88%) and DOC (249 mg/l, ↓37%).
W artykule podjęto próbę oceny przydatności metody Taguchi do optymalizacji procesu oczyszczania syntetycznych ścieków farbiarskich (pH = 6.7-7.2, Conductivity = 6.71-6.84 mS/cm, Salinity = 3581-3648 mg NaCl/dm3, Colour = 560-4710 mg Pt/dm3, COD = 2220-2290 mg O2/dm3, TOC = 394-551 mg/dm3) z zastosowaniem K2FeO4. Badania prowadzono z wykorzystaniem 3 rodzajów ścieków zawierających detergent anionowy (laurylosiarczan sodu, 100 mg/dm3) i różniących się jedynie stężeniem barwnika Acid Green 16 (AG 16).

Opis:
In 1966, Cummins introduced the “tree graph”: the tree graph \( \textbf{T} (G) \) of a graph \( G \) (possibly infinite) has all its spanning trees as vertices, and distinct such trees correspond to adjacent vertices if they differ in just one edge, i.e., two spanning trees \( T_1 \) and \( T_2 \) are adjacent if \( T_2 = T_1 − e + f \) for some edges \( e \in T_1 \) and \( f \notin T_1 \). The tree graph of a connected graph need not be connected. To obviate this difficulty we define the “forest graph”: let \( G \) be a labeled graph of order \( \alpha \), finite or infinite, and let \( \mathfrak{N}(G) \) be the set of all labeled maximal forests of \( G \). The forest graph of \( G \), denoted by \( \textbf{F} (G) \), is the graph with vertex set \( \mathfrak{N}(G) \) in which two maximal forests \( F_1 \), \( F_2 \) of \( G \) form an edge if and only if they differ exactly by one edge, i.e., \( F_2 = F_1 − e + f \) for some edges \( e \in F_1 \) and \( f \notin F_1 \). Using the theory of cardinal numbers, Zorn’s lemma, transfinite induction, the axiom of choice and the well-ordering principle, we determine the F-convergence, F-divergence, F-depth and F-stability of any graph \( G \). In particular it is shown that a graph \( G \) (finite or infinite) is F-convergent if and only if \( G \) has at most one cycle of length 3. The F-stable graphs are precisely \( K_3 \) and \( K_1 \). The F-depth of any graph \( G \) different from \( K_3 \) and \( K_1 \) is finite. We also determine various parameters of \( \mathbf{F} (G) \) for an infinite graph \( G \), including the number, order, size, and degree of its components.

Objective: The aim of this study was to compare QoL of oropharyngeal cancer survivors who had received different treatments. Subjects and methods: We contacted 954 survivors. Each survivor received the QoL questionnaires EORTC QLQ-C30 and EORTC QLQ-H&N35. Results: A total of 263 survivors completed the questionnaires (28% responses). Forty-five of them had undergone surgery, 20 had received definitive radiotherapy or chemo-radiotherapy, 85 surgery plus adjuvant radiotherapy, and 111 surgery plus adjuvant chemo-radiotherapy. Survivors who had received adjuvant radiotherapy and surgery reported significantly more problems with swallowing (B=13.43 [95% Confidence Interval (CI) 1.83-25.03]), senses (B=24,91 [CI 11.86-37.97]), eating (B=16.91 [CI 3.46-30.36]), dry mouth (B=26.42 [CI 12.17-40.67]), sticky saliva (B=22.37 [CI 6.23-38.50]) and nutritional supplements (B=18.59 [CI 0.62-36.56]) than those who had received surgery only. Survivors who had received adjuvant chemo-radiotherapy and surgery reported significantly many more problems with dry mouth (B=34.15 [CI 18.91-49.39]) and sticky saliva (B=22.90 [CI 5.65-40.16]), and fewer problems with physical functioning (B=-12.07 [CI 0.49-23-64]). Conclusion: Survivors who participated in this survey and who had undergone surgery alone reported in some head- and neck-specific domains a better health-related quality of life than patients who had undergone multi-modal treatment or adjuvant radiotherapy.

Opis:
Background: Trekking in Nepal is popular and generally safe. However preventable trekking injuries and deaths are often the result of poor risk managementand lack of skills – i.e. acute mountain sickness (AMS) and specific First Aid (FA). Shlim and Gallie’s reviews in 1992 and 2004 of trekking deaths here found a fivefold higher risk for fatal outcomes in organized trekking tours (OT) compared to independently organised trekkers (IT), including preventable deaths (i.e. AMS). Our survey sought to identify the AMS, FA and risk management knowledge/skills of OT and IT whilst trekking in Nepal. Methods: Based on previous pilot studies at the Khumbu region in Nepal, and on risk management information provided by leading German trekking operators, a survey was conducted using two questionnaires: one each for OT and IT.The study site was Manang (3,500m) in Annapurna region, Nepal. All trekkers passing through this site who volunteered their participation were included. For evaluation descriptive statistical methods and non-parametric tests were used. Results: 442 questionnaires were completed (155 OT; 287 IT). Mean agewas 36.4 +/– 12.0y and 61% were male. Mountaineering experience was low and FA training was scarce in both groups. IT (92.7%) followed acclimatization recommendations and 59.2% carried AMS medication, compared respectively to OT at 63.2% and 25.2%. Only 27.1% of OT had repatriation plans for a medical emergency. Conclusions: Most of OT and IT were inexperienced in mountaineering and in mountain emergencies. The preparedness of OT overall was inadequate and over-reliant on the organisers whose skills may also be inadequate when responding to an emergency. Responsible trekking should require that more than one person in a group have adequate, up-to-date riskassessment/management and FA skills specific to the trek, and in particular an understanding of altitude profile, AMS, and individual abilities.

Opis:
Recent advances at Institute of Grassland and Environmental Research (Aberystwyth, U.K.) in cytogenetics of the Lolium/Festuca complex places us in the advantageous position of being able to map genes of agronomic importance onto chromosome arms using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). The ability to physically map genes leads to the capability for "dissecting" quantitative traits into their different components and will lead to better understanding of the complex physiological processes involved and the identification of their genetic control. By tagging genes of interest, using molecular and morphological markers, it will be possible to select and combine suites of desirable genes in a single genotype and thus produce novel cultivars by conventional breeding procedures. Programmes for introgression depend on the relationships between species and on levels of chromosome pairing. Phylogenetic relationships within the Lolium/Festuca complex are being determined using both genomic in situ hybridization (GISH) and FISH. With recent advances in genetic manipulation within the Lolium/Festuca complex, opportunities now arise for gene transfer from Lolium and Festuca species into other important agricultural crops.

Opis:
Introduction: Fellow trekkers are often the first responders to their comrades in remote settings. Not everyone undertakes First Aid (FA) training when travelling to remote settings away from comprehensive healthcare, whether travelling independently or in a group. The syllabus of standard urbanised FA courses does not fully cover the needs of such trekkers (ie altitude illnesses). We evaluated the FA and emergency knowledge of trekkers en route in the remote Nepalese Himalayas.Material and methods: A questionnaire about FA, trekking emergencies and water hygiene knowledge was completed by a cohort of 453 trekkers passing through Manang (3,519 m), Nepal, who volunteered their participation. A previously validated questionnaire consisted of 20 multiple choice questions (each using a five-point Likert scale) was used, followed by a subjective self-assessment of 17 key topics using a 5-point rating scale from very good to unsatisfactory knowledge. Demographic data including FA and climbing experience was also collected. Results: The participants generally showed a poor knowledge in FA and trekking emergencies, even though 20.8% had some occupational medical training. In total 59.5% of possible answers were answered correctly. On average each participant managed to answer only one out of 20 questions (5.4%) completely correct. The most unsatisfactory results concerned the following topics, each with only 2.4% correct answers: hypothermia/resuscitation, rescue strategies and rip fractures. The best results were for HACE 33.8%, cranio-cerebral injury 33.6%, angina pectoris/heart attack 31.8% and hypovolemic shock 28.7%. The majority of participants had very limited experience of climbing mountains, rock climbing or ice climbing. Conclusions: This study provides essential data identifying deficiencies in standard FA courses that are targeted for urban settings, and not for trekkers in a remote setting far away from comprehensive health care and rescue. There is a need to develop readily accessible FA curriculums specific to trekkers that would provide education on preventative care prior to, during, and after treks, and to improve their knowledge of medical care of trekking injuries and emergencies.
