Opis:
The subject of this article is the problem of payment gridlocks and their significance for the enterprise sector and the risks they cause. The authors’ attention is focused here on presenting the essence of payment gridlocks, their consequences, as well as the causes on the sides of both the debtor and the creditor. In the empirical part of the article, the authors focused on assessing the problem of payment backlogs in selected mining and energy-production companies in Poland. A study on selected companies from this industry was conducted, the purpose of which was to show the scale of delayed payments with the particular identification of those that are payment backlogs (i.e. a delay of at least 60 days). Five major companies from the energy industry in Poland were selected for the study, representing both the mining and energy production sectors. These companies are Polska Grupa Górnicza SA, Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa SA, ENEA SA, Energa SA and TAURON Polska Energia SA According to the available data, payment terms in this sector are the longest in the European Union compared to other sectors of the economy. In Poland, the situation is no different in this respect. This is especially visible in the mining industry, which is perceived as very risky when it comes to timely payments. Undoubtedly, reducing payment gridlocks in this industry is a difficult task, which results from its specificity and the number of problems it is struggling with, which have been additionally reinforced by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Opis:
Theoretical background: Banks, due to their nature and a specific role in the economy, are subject to significant regulations in the field of their activities. Currently, the increasing importance of ESG regulations is noticeable, which is on the one hand the result of changing requirements within the EU, as well as ownership requirements and noticeable market pressure. Non-financial disclosures in the area of ESG are becoming permanent and important element of the information policy of banks. Banks manage to monitor the indicators of their own environmental policy or disclose social and employee issues, although this certainly involves additional reporting burdens, and the scope of disclosures as well as the degree of their significance still vary. Purpose of the article: The aim of the study is to identify, systematize and evaluate EU regulations in the area of ESG disclosures relating to the banking sector, taking into account the identification of major limitations related to their implementation. Research methods: The literature review as well as ESG reporting regulations overview and a case study which presents the ESG disclosure practice. Main findings: Effective communication of a bank with its stakeholders is of a crucial importance. As indicated, the legal solutions in this area are new, there are possibilities for their different interpretation, the practice has also not yet been developed. In addition, and perhaps above all, information on the imple mentation of environmental goals indicated in the Taxonomy flows to banks from their clients. Therefore, the approach of bank customers to the discussed issues is important, while for banks it is and will be a huge challenge to verify whether the financed investment is actually ecological and the business activity of the bank’s client is sustainable.

Channels selective for potassium or chloride ions are present in all intracellular membranes such as mitochondrial membranes, sarcoplasmic/endoplasmic reticulum, nuclear membrane and chromaffin granule membranes. They probably play an important role in events such as acidification of intracellular compartments and regulation of organelle volume. Additionally, intracellular ion channels are targets for pharmacologically active compounds, e.g. mitochondrial potassium channels interact with potassium channel openers such as diazoxide. This review describes current observations concerning the properties and functional roles of intracellular potassium and chloride channels.

Opis:
The plants of the Impatiens L. (Balsaminaceae) have been used for a long time in folk medicine in different painful conditions, and to treat rheumatism, isthmus and crural aches, fractures, superficial infections, fingernail inflammation. This study was undertaken to determine the pharmacological profile of hydroethanolic extracts from Impatiens glandulifera, I. noli-tangere and I. parviflora. A range of behavioral assessments was applied to evaluate the effects of obtained extracts i.e. measurement of body temperature, tests of locomotor activity and motor coordination, nociceptive reaction and anxiety-like behavior. Hydroethanolic extracts were analyzed for total polyphenol (TPC), flavonoid (TFC), flavones/flavonols (TFFC), and flavonones/dihydroflavonols (TFDC) content. Our results show that the extracts from Impatiens species contain high levels of TPC, TFC, TFFC, and TFDC. Oral (i.e., by gavage) administration of Impatiens L. extracts (except for I. noli-tangere) presented an antinociceptive or/and anti-inflammatory activity in the writhing test. The antinociceptive effect of I. parviflora leaves (100 mg/kg) and I. glandulifera flowers (100 mg/kg) was reversed by naloxone. I. glandulifera flowers and roots extracts (100 mg/kg) increased the reaction time to the thermal stimulus in the hot-plate test. All extracts from I. glandulifera (100 mg/kg) showed antianxiety effect in the elevated plus-maze test. It is worth noting that none of the extracts, at the highest used dose – 0.1 ED50 (200 mg/kg), caused coordination impairments or myorelaxation as measured in the rota-rod and chimney tests. These results seem to suggest that the tested extracts are not neurotoxic.

Opis:
Rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus (RHDV) which causes a highly contagious disease of wild and domestic rabbits belongs to the family Caliciviridae. It is a small, positive single-stranded RNA virus with a genome of 7.5 kb and has a diameter of approximately 40 nm. In negatively stained electron micrographs the virus shows typical calicivirus morphology with regularly arranged cup-shaped structures on the surface. It is a major pathogen of rabbits in many countries. Vp60 - a coat protein of molecular mass around 60 kDa is the major antigen of RHDV. It is present as 90 dimeric units per virion particle. We have expressed VP60 gene in the baculovirus system with the aim to use it as a potential vaccine against RHDV and a diagnostic reagent in immunological tests. cDNA of the vp60 gene of strain SGM, was cloned into a baculovirus transfer vector as full-length gene, as well as truncated gene lacking 600 5´-terminal nucleotides. The sequence of SGM VP60 differed markedly from that of the reference strain. Full-length recombinant VP60 protein from the SGM strain self-assembled to form virus-like particles (VLPs). These particles observed by electron microscopy were morphologically similar to native virions and were able to agglutinate human group 0 erythrocytes. After immunization the recombinant particles induced RHDV-specific antibodies in rabbits and guinea pigs. Rabbits immunized with the VLPs were fully protected against challenge with a virulent RHDV.

Opis:
Gram-positive and nonpathogenic lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are considered to be promising candidates for the development of new, safe systems of heterologous protein expression. Recombinant LAB has been shown to induce specific local and systemic immune response against selected pathogens, and could be a good alternative to classical attenuated carriers. The main goal of our study was to express the avian influenza haemagglutinin (H5) and chicken interleukin 2 (chIL-2) in Lactococcus lactis. Results of this study were anticipated to lead to construction of lactococcal strain(s) with potential vaccine properties against the avian influenza A (H5N1) virus. Expression of the cloned H5 gene, its His-tagged variant and chIL-2 gene, under the control of the ptcB gene promoter was attested by RT-PCR on transcriptional level and Western or dot blot analysis on translational level, demonstrating that system can be an attractive solution for production of heterologous proteins. The results of the preliminary animal trial conducted in mice are a promising step toward development of a vaccine against avian bird flu using Lactococcus lactis cells as antigen carriers.
