Opis:
Mycotoxins are toxic secondary metabolites produced by fungi. Those biologically active compounds occur naturally and they include zearalenone (ZEN), a mycotoxin that contaminates plant material, including the ingredients used in the production of commercial dog food. The influence of monotonic, low-dose and long-term exposure to ZEN on pre-pubertal bitches has not been fully explored to date. This paper describes a 42-day experiment performed on clinically healthy female dogs aged approximately 70 days, with estimated body weight of 8 kg. The animals were randomly divided into two experimental groups (EI and EII) and a control group (C) of 10 animals each. Group EI received 50 μg ZEN/kg (of body weight) per os, group EII received 75 μg ZEN/kg BW per os, and the control group was administered placebo. The bitches were ovariohysterectomized at the end of the experiment (at around 112 days of age), and selected sections of the uterine wall were subjected to immunohistochemical analyses (TUNEL and PCNA). A shift towards higher apoptotic (AI) and proliferative index (PI) was observed, in particular in group EI. Higher AI and PI values were noted in the epithelium of all uterine regions analysed and in the uterine glands in the uterine horn proximal to the body of the uterus.

Opis:
Nanomaterials have a great potential for the possible oil spill cleanup due to their unique wettability characteristics and large surface area. This work reports investigations on oil sorption behavior of a commercially available hydrophobic nano-silica when tested with a light paraffinic crude oil and a heavy aromatic crude oil. Sorption experiments were carried out in batch sorption system under static and dynamic conditions. Influence of mass of sorbent, sorption time, temperature and pH value of water on sorption capacity were tested and compared to find an optimal operational conditions for adsorption process. Nanopowder exhibited high selectivity for absorbing oil from water; a removal efficiency found by gravimetric method was high as 96% to 99%. The sorption capacity inereases with the inerease of sorption time and mass of sorbent. Nano-silica powder was found to be effective sorbent material as compared to widely used synthetic fibers

Opis:
In the course of the mature gas fields exploitation there are many technical problems including the corrosion damage, formation of hydrates and water cut. In many cases, an effective solution of these problems is the dosage of appropriately selected chemicals. Commercially available corrosion inhibitors, hydrate inhibitors, demulsifiers and foaming agents are injected in a form of single, multifunctional mixture through one liner which reduces injection costs. The paper presents the results of laboratory tests, which aim was to investigate synergism and antagonism in multifunctional mixture containing different commercially available surfactants, corrosion and hydrate inhibitors. Correlations between final product composition and performances such as liquid unloading efficiency, corrosion protection and pour point were studied. The described approach allows to adapt the tertiary mixture composition (foaming agent + corrosion inhibitor + hydrates inhibitor) to the current production conditions. The polarization behavior of electrodes in brines with and without mixture of additives has been studied by a cyclic voltammetric method. The addition of increasing concentrations of each chemicals causes the reduction in the corrosion current density. The measurements using a modified method of the US Bureau of Mines show synergistic effect of surfactants and corrosion inhibitor on foamabilities. Multifunctional mixtures are stable under storage conditions and not cause any compatibility problems with reservoir fluids.

Opis:
This study examined the interaction of solid nanoparticles and anionic and non-ionic surfactant at an air–water interface. Aqueous foams stabilized by silica nanoparticles in water with different levels of salinity were studied in detail. The stability of solid/surfactant dispersion was evaluated visually. Nanoparticles content impact and concentration of surfactant on the foamability, deliquification of foams and structure of wet foams were studied. It was found that the foamability of dispersion depends either on the surfactant concentration or on the nanoparticles concentration. The adsorption of hydrophobically modified silica particles and surfactants reduces the air/water interface tension. The results of the examinations showed that the use of nanoparticles allows to increase the efficiency of brine unloading even up to 20%. Surfactant particle and nanosilica present synergistic action, use of 4 wt% of nanoparticles allows to reduce surfactant consumption up to half. The cost of the preparation of the proposed dispersion is slightly higher, about 5%, compared to the sole surfactant.

Opis:
Article contains a detailed analysis and a preliminary selection of potential CO2 emitters that can supply gas for CCS-EOR projects in oil fields clusters in Poland. The idea of CO2 injection into clusters arises from the fact that oil reservoirs in Poland are relatively small, but very often located close together. Reservoirs grouping significantly increases the potential storage capacity and improves economic indicators. In addition, CCS-EOR projects combine CO2 storage (CCS) with an increase in production from mature oil fields (EOR). The analysis was performed using a database of carbon dioxide emitters in Poland created by the National Centre for Emissions Management. This database contains a list of all registered CO2 producers with annual emissions exceeding 1 Mg. On this basis, potential CO2 sources for previously selected four clusters of oil reservoirs were chosen.

Opis:
Capillary trapping is thought to be one of the primary CO2 fixing mechanisms in a porous medium when it is stored. While CO2 is injected, gas displaces formation water (brine) in the process called drainage. In the case of the rock mass wetted by water, formation water remains adsorbed in wall pores and micropores. Once the injection process has been completed, gas is displaced by the natural water in the process referred to as imbibition. In that way CO2, being a non-wetting phase, is held in the form of dispersed bubbles as an immobile phase. The process occurs fast and allows for a regular storage of large amounts of CO2. The process is dependent upon numerous parameters, including capillary pressure and contact angle, but such measurements cannot be easily taken for rock cores in reservoir conditions. Another problem is the fact that it is difficult to separate the impact of such mechanisms as dissolution and mineral trapping. So far capillary trapping has been deeply analyzed in terms of hydrocarbon recovery and contaminant remediation. The goal of this article is to:– present a physiochemical basis of capillary trapping in CCS context,– simulate the impact of relative permeability hysteresis on geological CO2 storage.

Opis:
In this work, the studies of various physico-chemical parameters of surface waters originated from the selected area of oil exploitation in the south of Poland are presented. The water samples were collected from streams and ponds or directly from surface tanks situated in the vicinity of operating wells. The observed values of different parameters like pH, odór, color, turbidity, electroconductivity, concentration of sulfate, chloride, nitrate, iron, calcium, magnesium, ammonium, alkanity, dissolved oxygen or petroleum contamination of samples were compared with standard values recommended by the WHO (World Health Organization) and the relevant Polish Regulation. Preliminary studies show that investigated surface waters are slightly affected by anthropogenic pollution. The main two sources of contamination of water from the study area are agriculture and mining industry.

Opis:
One of the enhanced oil recovery methods, which enables to recover an additional 15–20% of oil resources is the CO2-EOR method based on carbon dioxide injection into partially depleted reservoirs. Determination of the optimal process control facilitates effective use of natural resources. The idea of this paper is to develop an algorithm that optimizes the CO2-EOR process. This algorithm is based on the combination of artificial intelligence, control theory and computer simulation of hydrocarbon reservoirs. The effect of the proposed solution is the CO2-EOR process control, which is optimal in the case of the adopted objective function expressing the economic value of the project. The obtained results suggest that the use of artificial intelligence methods in the hydrocarbon production allows to improve the process efficiency by an additional 31% compared to the project carried out with the use of engineering knowledge.

This paper presents signal processing aspects for automatic segmentation of retinal layers of the human eye. The paper draws attention to the problems that occur during the computer image processing of images obtained with the use of the Spectral Domain Optical Coherence Tomography (SD OCT). Accuracy of the retinal layer segmentation for a set of typical 3D scans with a rather low quality was shown. Some possible ways to improve quality of the final results are pointed out. The experimental studies were performed using the so-called B-scans obtained with the OCT Copernicus HR device.

This paper presents analysis of selected noise reduction methods used in optical coherence tomography (OCT) retina images (the socalled B-scans). The tested algorithms include median and averaging filtering, anisotropic diffusion, soft wavelet thresholding, and multiframe wavelet thresholding. Precision of the denoising process was evaluated based on the results of automated retina layers segmentation, since this stage (vital for ophthalmic diagnosis) is strongly dependent on the image quality. Experiments were conducted with a set of 3D low quality scans obtained from 10 healthy patients and 10 patients with vitreoretinal pathologies. Influence of each method on the automatic image segmentation for both groups of patients is thoroughly described. Manual annotations of investigated retina layers provided by ophthalmology experts served as reference data for evaluation of the segmentation algorithm.
