Opis:
First occurrence of xenotime-(Y) veins in the Neoproterozoic metamudstone, NW margin of the Małopolska Block, is reported here. The veins are <5 µm thick, inhomogeneous and of varied morphology. Their textural characteristics, exhibiting very low U and Th contents (<1 wt%) and relatively high heavy rare earth elements (REE) contents (12–24 REE2O3 wt%), suggest hydrothermal genesis, though diagenetic precursors of the veins are not excluded. The veins provide good evidence of the mobility of Y, REE, U and Th in low-temperature conditions (anchimetamorphic to greenschist facies). The observed differences in the chemical composition of the veins may indicate multiple stages of formation, possibly during several hydrothermal events that affected the area.

Opis:
Introduction and objective. The biochemical and anthropometric consequences of metabolic disorders exert an enormous effect on the functioning of people worldwide. The aim of this study is to assess relationships between biochemical and anthropometric parameters associated with metabolic syndrome, and the presence of the PPAR-γ rs1801282, the FTO rs9939609, and the MC4R rs17782313 polymorphisms in women aged 45–60. Materials and method. The study included 425 women, aged 45–59 years, from the general population of the West Pomeranian Province in north-west Poland. The research procedure involved a structured interview, anthropometric and blood pressure measurements, biochemical analysis of serum, and genetic analysis. Results. The carriers of the A/A genotype of the FTO polymorphism had higher LDL levels than their counterparts with the T/T genotype (p=0.01). The carriers of the T/T genotype of the MC4R polymorphism had lower non-HDL levels than those with the C/C and C/T genotypes (p=0.019). Weight was related to the C/C and the C/G + G/G genotypes of the PPAR-γ gene polymorphism (p=0.046). The model of inheritance for the MC4R polymorphism had a significant effect on TG (p=0.039) and non-HDL (p=0.05) levels. Conclusions. The genotypes analyzed in the study had only a slight direct effect on the biochemical and anthropometric abnormalities typical of metabolic disorders. Nonetheless, the risk alleles (A allele of the FTO rs9939609 and the C allele of the MC4R rs17782313) were found to be related to lipid metabolism disorders in 45–60-year-old women.

Opis:
Health behaviours are actions taken by a person in the field of health. Risky behaviours are those that pose a threat to health. Bioelements are essential for the proper functioning of every organism. Their trace amounts are necessary for life and health. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between health behaviours and the levels of bioelements in the blood serum of secondary school students. This survey-based study was carried out on a sample of 376 secondary school students aged 13-16 years. It was performed using the HBSC questionnaire (Health Behaviour In School-aged Children: A WHO Collaborative Cross-national Study). Next, cubital vein blood was collected for laboratory tests, and the levels of bioelements (Mg, Ca, Cu, Fe, Zn) in blood serum were determined. The analysis of the research material did not demonstrate substantial differences in the mean serum levels of Ca, Mg, Zn, Cu, Fe between smokers and non-smokers, alcohol consumers and non-consumers, drug users and non-users. There were no statistically significant correlations between the levels of bioelements and the frequency of drinking beer and vodka (p>0.05). A statistically significant correlation was observed between Cu levels and drinking wine (p≤0.05). Subjects showing aggressive behaviours (getting into scuffles) had lower Mg and Zn levels than other secondary school students. There were weak but statistically significant correlations between Cu levels and the frequency of wine consumption, and between serum Zn levels and smoking marijuana among the subjects.

Opis:
Epilepsy is a common neurological disorder. It affects 50 million people worldwide, over half of which are children. Many children who suffer from epilepsy are also affected by metabolic disorders, characterized by obesity as well as intolerance and deficient transport of glucose. Recently, many researchers have indicated chromium (+3) as an essential trace mineral which probably plays an important role in metabolism of glucose and insulin. There are no data about chromium alterations in the body of epileptic patients. The purpose of this study was to find possible correlation between chromium (+3) concentration and the glucose level in children with epilepsy. Material and methods: Twenty-three untreated epileptic children with idiopathic generalized tonic-clonic seizures (9 girls and 14 boys) aged 13.4±2.7 years and 25 healthy children (sex-age-matched) served as a control were recruited to this study. The chromium blood and serum concentrations were determined as well as serum glucose level. Results: There were no statistically significant differences between epileptic and healthy children in the mean chromium (+3) blood concentration as well as according to sex in both analyzed groups of children. The mean serum chromium concentration in epileptic children was significantly lower than in healthy subjects generally (p<0.001), as well as in boys group (p<0.001) and girls (p<0.001). Although, the negative statistically significant correlation between serum glucose and chromium concentrations was found in epileptic children (p<0.01), we have not found so associations in whole blood and in healthy children. Conclusions: Our research has shown that during epilepsy the concentration of serum chromium was lower than in healthy subjects what was associated with glucose abnormalities. These preliminary results suggest that the detail research on the chromium in epilepsy are necessary.

Opis:
Objectives: The assessment of the neurotoxic effect of arsenic (As) and its inorganic compounds is still the subject of interest due to a growing As application in a large array of technologies and the need to constantly verify the principles of prevention and technological parameters. The aim of this study was to determine the status of the nervous system (NS) in workers exposed to As at concentrations exceeding hygiene standards (Threshold Limit Values (TLV) – 10 μg/m³, Biological Exposure Index (BEI) – 35 μg/l) and to analyze the relationship between the NS functional state, species of As in urine and As levels in the workplace air. Material and Methods: The study group comprised 21 men (mean age: 47.43±7.59) employed in a copper smelting factory (mean duration of employment: 22.29±11.09). The control group comprised 16 men, matched by age and work shifts. Arsenic levels in the workplace air (As-A) ranged from 0.7 to 92.3 μg/m³; (M = 25.18±28.83). The concentration of total arsenic in urine (Astot-U) ranged from 17.35 to 434.68 μg/l (M = 86.82±86.6). Results: Syndrome of peripheral nervous system (PNS) was manifested by extremity fatigue (28.6%), extremity pain (33.3%) and paresthesia in the lower extremities (33.3%), as well as by neuropathy-type mini-symptoms (23.8%). Electroneurographic (ENeG) tests of peroneal nerves showed significantly decreased response amplitude with normal values of motor conduction velocity (MCV). Stimulation of sural nerves revealed a significantly slowed sensory conduction velocity (SCV) and decreased sensory potential amplitude. Neurophysiological parameters and the results of biological and environmental monitoring showed a relationship between $\text{As}^\text{tot}$, $\text{As}^\text{III}$ (trivalent arsenic), the sum of iAs ($\text{As}^\text{III}+\text{As}^\text{V}$ (pentavalent arsenic))+MMA (monomethylarsonic acid) concentration in urine and As levels in the air. Conclusions: The results of the study demonstrate that occupational exposure to inorganic arsenic levels exceeding hygiene standards (TLV, BEI) generates disorders typical of peripheral neuropathy.
