Opis:
In energy-intensive systems, in which energy need to be transported through compact pipelines, steam is very often used as an energy carrier. The latent heat of steam condensation, surpassing its sensible heat, presents a distinctive advantage, resulting in steam pipelines requiring diameters significantly smaller compared to those needed for equivalent thermal power transmission. Nonetheless, the insulation of steam pipelines remains imperfect, resulting in inevitable heat dissipation. Consequently, this thermal loss leads to the condensation of water within the pipelines, necessitating the implementation of steam traps. The precise selection and implementation of suitable steam traps are essential for sustaining optimal pipeline functionality while minimizing energy losses. This research endeavors to comprehensively assess the criteria governing steam trap selection, focusing on their pivotal role in facilitating efficient pipeline operation. To achieve this objective, a mathematical analysis was conducted to quantify the volume of liquid generated within the pipeline due to condensation. Subsequently, an innovative self-regulating steam trap was introduced and evaluated to elucidate its efficiency in evacuating the accumulated liquid. Remarkably, the utilization of these advanced self-regulating steam traps yielded remarkably positive outcomes, profoundly enhancing pipeline performance and obviating steam losses. Through meticulous analysis of the mathematical model and empirical validation of the novel steam trap's functionality, this study not only contributes to enhancing the theoretical understanding of steam pipeline dynamics but also offers practical insights into optimizing their operational efficiency. This research showcases the potential of self-regulating steam traps to revolutionize steam pipeline dewatering practices, ensuring sustained energy transmission with minimal wastage and reaffirming their pivotal role in modern energy systems.

Opis:
Peroxynitrite-mediated linoleic acid oxidation and tyrosine nitration were analysed in the presence of synthetic model neuromelanins: dopamine (DA) -melanin, cysteinyldopamine (CysDA) -melanin and various DA/CysDA copolymers. The presence of melanin significantly decreased the amount of 3-nitrotyrosine formed. This inhibitory effect depended on the type and concentration of melanin polymer. It was found that incorporation of CysDA-derived units into melanin attenuated its protective effect on tyrosine nitration induced by peroxynitrite. In the presence of bicarbonate, the melanins also inhibited 3-nitrotyrosine formation in a concentration dependent manner, although the extent of inhibition was lower than in the absence of bicarbonate. The tested melanins inhibited peroxynitrite-induced formation of linoleic acid hydroperoxides, both in the absence and in the presence of bicarbonate. In the presence of bicarbonate, among the oxidation products appeared 4-hydroxynonenal (HNE). CysDA-melanin inhibited the formation of HNE, while DA-melanin did not affect the aldehyde level. The results of the presented study suggest that neuromelanin can act as a natural scavenger of peroxynitrite.

Opis:
Background: The aim of the study was to present data on subjective and objective assessments of physical activity in employed women and differences in their activity levels depending on age, education level, place of residence, financial status, and BMI. Another aim was to evaluate correlations of physical activity assessed subjectively and objectively with the aforementioned variables. Methods: Ninety employed women aged 50 to 64 years were divided into 3 groups. The International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ-S) was used for the subjective assessment, and the ActiGraph GT3X activity monitor was used for objective assessment. Results: The subjective assessment of total physical activity levels in the women was significantly higher than their objective assessment. The statistically significantly highest physical activity levels assessed by means of the questionnaire were found for women with the poorest financial status, or primary or secondary education levels and, for the assessments using accelerometers, the women with a BMI indicating overweight. A weak positive correlation (R = 0.25) was found between the total physical activity levels assessed subjectively and objectively. Conclusions: It seems that the use of only one tool for evaluation of physical activity level is not very conclusive. The use of both subjective and objective tools is needed to obtain reliable information about physical activity level.

Opis:
The global COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in restrictions in most countries. One of them was to replace traditional education in schools with online learning. Such a change could provoke a build-up of negative feelings due to insecurity and loneliness. In addition, reducing daily physical activity and closing sports venues can have a detrimental effect on health. The article presents the results of the study of the impact of distance learning on the daily physical activity and condition of physical education teachers in Poland, as well as the subjective perception of physical and mental health in this professional group. Google forms were used to collect the data. The research tool was a questionnaire. The analysis showed that distance learning had a significant negative impact on the physical and mental health of the study group. The impact of distance learning on physical and mental health is gender independent. Teachers more often negatively assessed their physical and mental health compared to the studies in previous years. Daily physical activity of the subjects decreased, and most of them increased their body weight. Less than 3% of the surveyed teachers during the blockade felt happy and full of life.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to assess seroprevalence of anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies among healthcare workers (HCW) before introduction of vaccination, in selected areas in Poland as well as to identify potential risk factors and estimate the cumulative incidence of COVID-19 infections in this population.Material and MethodsThe authors conducted a sero-epidemiological, cross-sectional study among HCW of 5 non-COVID-19 hospitals in Poland. The recruitment took place in December 1–23, 2020, all HCW at selected hospitals could volunteer into the study. All persons were screened with rapid SARS-CoV-2 IgM/IgG tests in capillary blood. In case of positive result, 5 ml of venous blood was drawn for confirmatory testing with ELISA assay. The authors estimated prevalence of laboratory confirmed anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibody presence and examined factors associated with positive result. Cumulative incidence was estimated applying 2-source capture-recapture method to serology results and self-report of past infection.ResultsOut of 1040 HCW included in the analysis, one-fourth (25.2%) received a positive result for anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies by ELISA test, the prevalence among women was 25.3% (95% CI: 22.5–28.4) and 24.6% (95% CI: 19–31.2) among men. The prevalence of anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies was the highest among respondents who declared home contact with a confirmed COVID-19 case, 43.9% (95% CI: 32.4–56.1). It was also elevated among those who indicated contact with patients with COVID-19, 32.5% (95% CI: 26.7–38.8) and business contacts, including at the workplace, 28.9% (95% CI: 22.5–36.3). The estimated cumulative incidence of COVID-19 infections in the population, using the capture-recapture method was 41.2% (95% CI: 38.1–44.2).ConclusionsHealthcare workers remained at increased risk of infection largely due to work-related contacts with infected patients, although home exposure was also common. Estimated cumulative incidence is higher than the antibody prevalence, which indicates the need to monitor HCW for possible immunity waning, also post-immunization immunity. Med Pr. 2022;73(2):109–23
