Opis:
The presence of symplasmic isolation and symplasmic continuity which are functional aspects of cell-to-cell communication, had been studied in cambium of Acer pseudoplatanus and Ulmus minor, with hope that uniqueness of this meristem, exemplified by its morphology and seasonal variations in its activity is also manifested in differences in the efficiency of communication between cambial cells during the year. The degree of symplasmic continuity was estimated by loading the fluorescent symplasmic tracer to the stem and following its distribution in a population of cambial cells observed on tangential, transverse and radial sections. In active cambium the tracer did not enter the rays. This suggested that the ray and fusiform cells, growing and dividing intensively at different rates were specifically isolated from each other. In the state of dormancy the tracer was present also in the rays implying continuity between the two types of cambial cells. Temporal restriction in tracer spreading from secondary xylem to cambial region was observed on transverse sections in both physiological states of the meristem. Higher degree of symplasmic isolation in active cambium is, most probably, associated with functional distinctiveness of ray and fusiform cells. We hypothesize further that the symplasmic continuity in dormant cambium results from the open conformation states of plasmodesmata, because the energy costs of these states are low. It is reasonable strategy when cambial cells do not divide and maintenance of their functional individuality is not necessary.

Opis:
Survivin regulates cell cycle and mitosis and has antiapoptotic properties. Because of its dual function survivin has been the subject of much research focusing on its role in tumorigenesis and the relationship between survivin expression and apoptotic and/or proliferative activity in many types of human tumor including non-Hodgkin’s Lymphomas. Such studies have not been conducted in canine lymphomas. The aim of this study was to evaluate the expression of survivin in canine lymphomas of low (5/25) and high (20/25) grades in relation to apoptotic markers (apoptotic index and index of caspase-3). Survivin was found in all examined lymphomas. Most tumors (18/25) showed survivin expression in 10%-25% of positive cells. Only in single cases was lower (0-10% positive cells, 1/25) or higher (25%-50% and >50% positive cells, 5/25 and 1/25, respectively) survivin expression. No significant differences between mean values of either index of survivin or apoptotic index was found between low and high grade lymphomas. However, such a difference among lymphoma grades was shown regarding the caspase-3 index. No correlation between the survivin index and either the apoptotic index or caspase-3 index was found, irrespective of the method of quantification: in whole specimens or in areas of low and high survivin expression. Positive correlation was consistently noted only between both apoptotic markers. The results indicate that survivin is commonly expressed in canine lymphomas. It seems that survivin does not exhibit anti-apoptotic activity in canine lymphomas. Lack of correlation between survivin expression and apoptotic markers could indicate its potential role in cell cycle activation in lymphoma cells.

Opis:
Water vapour sorption processes on mixtures of soil and organic fertiliser Rosahumus (RH) were investigated. Mixtures were prepared with Orthic Luvisol soil formed from loamy sand and Haplic Luvisol soil formed from loess. Samples contained different doses of fertiliser in the range from 1 to 50 weight percent. Differences in water vapour sorption on Rosahumus (RH) as well as the soils were observed. The properties of soil mixtures and organic material depended on the properties of both components and on the dose of Rosahumus. However, fertiliser was a dominant factor in sorption processes of investigated mixtures. Adsorption isotherms obtained by gravimetric method belonged to the same type II, in accordance to the BET classification. Significantly higher influence on the water vapour sorption was associated with fertiliser dose and was greater for mixtures with soil formed from loess. The increase of water vapour sorption was visibly higher for mixtures below 4% of Rosahumus content. On the other hand, greater concentration of RH resulted in similar amount of water vapour sorption and for Rosahumus dose of 50% the sorption was practically the same. Similar results were found for the maximum hygroscopicity (Mh) of mixtures. Strong correlation was observed between the Mh and the amount of added organic fertiliser with determination coefficient (R2) from 0.997 to 0.998.
Badano proces sorpcji pary wodnej na mieszaninach gleby i nawozu organi-cznego Rosahumus (RH). Mieszaniny sporządzono z gleby pseudobielicowej wytworzonej z piasku gliniastego i z lessu.

Opis:
The cycle of gonad development and related changes in the length structure and spatial-temporal distribution of ninespine sticklebacks (Pungitius pungitius L.) in Puck Bay were studied. Observations were carried out in the shallow shore zones, as well as in the deeper epipelagic zone of the Bay. Ninespine sticklebacks reproduce in the brackish environment of Puck Bay, breeding in its warmer, inshore zones. Reproduction takes place in the spring and summer months, from April to July. One female spawns several clutches of eggs during one breeding season. The average length of ninespine sticklebacks in Puck Bay was about 40 mm, and the sex ratio in the population was close to 1:1. However, both length structure and sex ratio were subject to local and periodic variations, resulting from possible breeding-related territorial divisions. Higher gonadosomatic indices in females in early spring represented the transition of fish to the advanced vitelligenous phase. The lowest GSI of males during the breeding season indicated the termination of spermatogenesis. The completion of spawning in August started a new process of gonad restoration to prepare the fish for the next breeding season.

Opis:
Elaborating composites containing waste materials requires study of basic mechanical properties and assessment of their structure quality. The subject of investigation was PPC concrete where aggregate was substituted with PET remaining after beverages bottles grinding. Substitution was done up to 25% (by volume). Waste material was fractioned and applied in various granulations. The main goal was to indicate the influence of such modification on the composite mechanical properties and to examine composite structure quality at macro level. Since PET and quartz differ greatly in density, to perform such examination it was possible to apply the nondestructive ultrasonic method, one of the most common NDT techniques used in material science and industry. The paper presents the effects of substitution of quartz with PET on ultrasonic wave propagation in PCC. The ultrasonic test results (measurements of wave velocity) compared with results of destructive tests (flexural and compressive strength) showed great correlation.

Opis:
Combination chemiotherapy is the current standard of care for dogs with lymphoma. Multidrug resistance is one of the most important factors contributing to the efficacy of chemiotherapy. The major protein responsible for this phenomenon is P-glycoprotein. Little is known about P-glycoprotein expression in particular subtypes of lymphomas. The aim of the study was evaluation of P-glycoprotein expression in various subtypes of canine lymphomas. Positive reaction with P-glycoprotein was found in 12/25 cases of various morphological subtypes of lymphomas, however, in 3/11 lymphomas the percentage of positively weakly stained cells was <10% and those tumors were also considered negative. Tumors with 10-50% P-glycoprotein positive cells were found in single cases of centroblastic and centroblastic-centrocytic tumors. In 5 lymphomas P-glycoprotein expression exceeded 50% of tumor cells. Those cases were found among centroblastic, centroblastic-centrocytic, lymphoblastic and Burkitt-like subtypes. Positive reaction was observed mainly in the cell cytoplasm, however, in some cases prominent perinuclear dot-like staining pattern was found. In 2 cases focal staining pattern comprised dominant type of immunolabelling. Among all lymphomas containing P-glycoprotein positive cells intensity of imunolabelling was assessed as weak (6/25), moderate (2/25) and strong (3/25). Our results indicate that P-glycoprotein expression is present in nearly one third of newly diagnosed canine lymphomas of different morphological subtypes including those most commonly occurring, such as cenroblastic lymphomas. Hence, determination of P-glycoprotein expression at the time of diagnosis could provide valuable information for the design of treatment protocols. Moreover, our results have shown that P-glycoprotein expression in canine tumors could be located in Golgi-zone.

Nineteen canine lymphomas were included in this study. Tumors were classified according to the updated Kiel classification adapted for canine lymphomas by Fournel-Fleury et al. Immunoglobulin light chains (κ and λ) and IgM and IgG expression were determined by immunohistochemical method. In all examined cases neoplastic cells were positive for one of the immunoglobulin light chains. Expression of λ light chains and κ light chains was observed in 18/19 and 1/19 tumors, respectively. In the majority of neoplastic cells in each examined specimen this reaction had a membranous pattern (sκ/sλ). In all examined cases the presence of immunoglobulin light chains was also observed in the cytoplasm of some neoplastic cells (cκ/cλ). These cells were usally rare and never constituted a dominant population. The expression of immunoglobulin was found in 13/19 cases. Most lymphomas were sIgM positive (11/13 cases). In one case expression of IgG was found, and in another lymphoma two populations of neoplastic cells with different expression of examined immunoglobulins (cells with IgM+ and IgG+ phenotypes) were observed. The reaction also had a membranous pattern. The cells containing cytoplasmic immunoglobulins were rare, and in most cases were of the same type as the surface immunoglobulins. Our study has confirmed that canine lymphomas are a monoclonal proliferation of B-cells usually expressing immunoglobulin λ light chains and that the vast majority of tumors deriving from B-cells express IgM. Our study also indicates a possibility of occurence of biclonal lymphomas in canine species.

Opis:
In this paper, the current problems associated with the classification of brown earths, are presented. According to the Polish Soil Classification (PSC) (1989, 2011), base saturation is the main parameter for identifying eutrophic and dystrophic brown soils. In practice, however, it is not possible to determine the base saturation value in the field. Therefore, the aim of this study was to estimate the base saturation using a regression equation and create a field guide for brown earths, based on the pH value, measured using a Hellige indicator, and the calcium carbonate content. Determination of the pH ranges enabled the classification of brown earth types in the field. These results suggest that pH can be used as a proxy for base saturation especially in the field. A change in the hierarchy of soil (sub)types is proposed for the new Polish Soil Classification.

Opis:
The heterogeneity of soil physical properties of Fluvisols, lack of large pristine areas, and different moisture regimes on non-flooded and flooded terraces impede the possibility to find a soil profile which can serve as a baseline for estimating the impact of natural or anthropogenic factors on soil evolution. The aim of this study is to compare the pore size distribution of pristine Fluvisols on flooded and non-flooded terraces using the method of the soil water retention curve, mercury intrusion porosimetry, nitrogen adsorption isotherms, and water vapour sorption. The pore size distribution of humic horizons of pristine Fluvisols on the non-flooded terrace differs from pore size distribution of Fluvisols on the flooded terrace. The peaks of textural and structural pores are higher in the humic horizons under more humid conditions. The structural characteristics of subsoil horizons depend on soil texture and evolution stage. The peaks of textural pores at about 1 mm diminish with lowering of the soil organic content. Structureless horizons are characterized by uni-modal pore size distribution. Although the content of structural pores of the subsoil horizons of Fluvisols on the non-flooded terrace is low, these pores are represented by biopores, as the coefficient of filtration is moderately high. The difference between non-flooded and flooded profiles is well expressed by the available water storage, volume and mean radius of pores, obtained by mercury intrusion porosimetry and water desorption, which are higher in the surface horizons of frequently flooded Fluvisols.
