Opis:
The study was designed to investigate the relative input of payoffs and probabilities into risk judgment on the basis of the analysis of information search pattern. The modified version of MouselabWeb software (http://www.mouselabweb.org) was used as an investigative tool. The amount, the kind and the order of information accessed by subjects to evaluate risk was collected from ordinary respondents and respondents trained in mathematics and statistics. In the latter group were 75 students and young researchers working at National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). The ordinary subjects were 67 Polish students of social sciences. As expected, the NASA group considered more information than ordinary students and searched for more information about probabilities. However, the ratio of information about payoffs to probabilities was close to 1 in both groups. Moreover, average risk rates were similar in both groups. It was also observed that risk rates were positively related with the amount of information about probabilities considered by subjects.

Opis:
Background: Atrioventricular nodal reentry tachycardia (AVNRT) is the most common paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia. The relatively ineffective antiarrhythmic drugs and the predominant young age makes the catheter ablation the therapy of choice in many patients. This results in predominance of this arrhythmia in electrophysiological labs. The aim of the study was to analyze the gender-related differences among patients undergoing the radiofrequency catheter ablation of slow pathway entrance to the atrioventricular node. Material and methods: The study group comprised of 147 consecutive patients with diagnosed atrioventricular nodal reentry tachycardia, who underwent the radiofrequency catheter ablation (RFCA) of slow pathway. Patients have been divided into 2 groups, based on sex. Results: The overall 97.3% of effectiveness of RFCA was observed. Women were significantly younger than men (53.7+/-17.2 vs 57.7+/-9.8 years) with lower radiation dose (2383.5+/-1993.2 vs 2891.6+/-2377.1 cGyxcm2). Conclusions: Younger age of women in comparison to men during RFCA of AVNRT reflects earlier onset of symptoms in women. Gender does not affect the time of fluoroscopy, but the higher rate of inducible tachycardia after RFCA in women may suggest the existence of anatomical difficulties or the operator’s apprehensions. Sex-related difference in radiation dose that we have observed may result from the greater volume of the men’s chest.

Cancer-related microangiopathic hemolytic anemia is rarely recognized as a paraneoplastic syndrome with a very poor prognosis in cancer patients. The treatment and prognosis are significantly different from that in other thrombotic microangiopathies, such as thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura and hemolytic uremic syndrome. The case of described patient demonstrates the diagnostic difficulties in diagnosing the causes of hemolytic anemia in patient with breast cancer and appropriate treatment.

Opis:
In this review we summarize stress factors that affect the lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and cause different molecular stress responses. LAB belong to a group of bacteria that is very widespread in food and beverages. They are present, and desired, in fermented products like yogurts, cheese, vegetables, meat or wine. In most of them, LAB are providing positive sensory and nutritive features. However, as harmless and desired microbes in one product, LAB can cause spoilage and a bad taste of others, especially in juices and beverages. LAB are resistant to many stress factors which allows them to survive in harsh environments. The most common stress factors they have to deal with are: heat, cold, acidity, NaCl and high hydrostatic pressure (HHP). Their ability to survive depends on their skills to cope with stress factors. Under stress conditions, LAB activate mechanisms that allow them to adjust to the new conditions, which can influence their viability and technological properties. This ability to adapt to different stress conditions may come from the cross-protection systems they have, as resistance to one factor may help them to deal with the other stress effectors. LAB are highly valuable for the food industry and that is why it is important to understand their stress response mechanisms.

The educational and socialization role of the media is not the latest novelty, however there are niches that have not been developed yet. Realizing the opinion-forming role of the mass media, which may be reflected in social behaviours, the authors of this article will analyse the content of chosen media products. The image of elderly people presented by the most popular Polish and American series will be examined. The research aims to find whether Desperate Housewives and Colours of happiness (original title: Barwy szczęścia) adjust the image of old age to the social-demographic situation, which is constantly changing in the majority of countries. Does the colossus – television promote stereotypes which make age discrimination morally approved – or just the opposite – a well thought out image, shaping the recognition and respect for people in their “third age”?

Opis:
Introduction. Charcot Marie Tooth disease (CMT) is currently one of the most commonly diagnosed and commonly hereditary sensorimotor neuropathies. Concluding from the literature, this is the first study describing the case of a patient with CMT disease in the c.217G> C variant of the INF2 gene and focal segmental glomerulosclerosis. Aim. To present a case of a 16-year-old patient suffering from CMT disease in variant c.217G> C of the INF2 gene and focal glomerulosclerosis. Description of the case. The text describes the CMT disease in a patient who underwent the WES / WGS-NGS genetic test and found a mutation within the INF2 gene at the chromosomal position hg38 14: 104701582-G> C, cDNA level c.217 G> C , notation at the p protein level (Gly73Arg). Genotype record according to Human Genome Variation Society: NM_022489.4: c. [217G> C]; [217 =]. The publication includes data on genetics, molecular mechanisms of the disease, diagnostic methods, rehabilitation and surgical treatment. Conclusion. CMT disease is a heterogeneous group of diseases caused by mutations in various genes. The incidence of this pathology has increased significantly in the last century. Currently, there are no treatments available to combat this disease, and symptomatic treatment is the only treatment available.
