In this work X-ray photoelectron studies of lithium titanate and copper doped lithium titanate are presented. Both, powder and thin films samples were prepared by sol-gel method. After preparation, the samples were heated in argon atmosphere at various temperatures in a range from 500 °C to 600 °C for 20 h. The crystalline structure of the samples was investigated by X-ray diffraction, while the oxidation states of the elements were examined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy method. X-ray diffraction measurements confirmed spinel phase of all manufactured samples. However it is well known that electrical and superconducting properties of lithium titanate are strongly correlated not only with structure, but also with oxidation state of Ti ions. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy investigations revealed mixture of $Ti^{3+}$ and $Ti^{4+}$ ions, although the $Ti^{3+}$/$Ti^{4+}$ ratio is much smaller than $1/2$ needed for superconductivity. In this work dependence between calcination temperature as well as amount of Cu dopant and $Ti^{3+}$/$Ti^{4+}$ proportion are reported.

Granular metals and superconductors are very interesting materials thanks to their untypical electrical properties caused by the presence of the Coulomb effects, electron and Cooper pair tunnelling and various aspects of disorder. Most typical and widely studied representatives of this group consist of low $T_c$ superconductor granules distributed in insulating matrix (e.g. lead in germanium matrix). In comparison with them a system of granules of high-$T_c$ superconductors embedded in an insulating matrix is more difficult to be experimentally realised. (Bi, Pb)-Sr-Ca-Cu-O materials obtained with solid state crystallisation method may be considered as an example of granular and disordered metals and superconductors. Solid state crystallisation of initially amorphous material leads to formation of 2201 and 2212 granules embedded in the insulating or semiconducting matrix. Further annealing causes increase in size and/or the number of conducting grains and decrease in the width of the insulating barriers between them. In both cases of low- and high-$T_c$ granular materials the main parameters, which determine their properties, are the amount of metallic phases and the tunnelling conductivity between the neighbouring grains. In this work some properties of low- and high-$T_c$ granular materials are discussed and compared.

The results of the scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy as well as atomic force microscopy measurements on the Nd$\text{}_{2-x}$Ce$\text{}_{x}$CuO$\text{}_{4-y}$ single crystals in ambient conditions are reported. Using the scanning tunneling microscopy we were able to modify the Nd$\text{}_{2-x}$Ce$\text{}_{x}$CuO$\text{}_{4-y}$ ab-plane in air under the conditions of sample bias voltage V$\text{}_{t}$=500 mV and set current I$\text{}_{s}$=0.3 nA. It is possible to prepare atomically flat and clean surfaces as well as to create new structures in a nanometer scale in these electron-doped materials. The similar processes were not observed during atomic force microscopy imaging.

Opis:
The paper presents examinations of the surface of base concrete with a 3D scanner. Two base concrete surfaces, differently prepared, were examined, together with two measurement strategies: simple and fast 3D scanning and partial scanning in selected areas corresponding to the device measurement space. In order to complete the analysis of a concrete surface topography an original Matlab-based program TAS (Topography Analysis and Simulation) was developed for both 2D and 3D surface analyses. It enables data processing, calculation of parameters, data visualization and digital filtration.

Opis:
In this work studies of structure and superconducting properties of $VN-SiO_{2}$ films are reported. The films were obtained through thermal nitridation (ammonolysis) of sol-gel derived $V_{2}O_{3}-SiO_{2}$ coatings (in a proper $V_{2}O_{3}//SiO_{2}$ ratio) at 1200°C. This process leads to the formation of disordered structure with VN metallic grains dispersed in the insulating $SiO_{2}$ matrix. The structural transformations occurring in the films as a result of ammonolysis were studied using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The critical superconducting parameters are obtained. The magnetoresistance at high magnetic fields has been investigated.

This paper reports on characteristics of alumina-type coatings deposited on steel substrates and treated with pulsed plasma streams containing high-energy ion beams (N, Ar, and Ti+N). Originally matted surfaces of the ceramic layers, which were created by plasma spraying of gray alumina, were changed into shiny ones, and splat boundaries disappeared due to the melting of a thin surface layer. The thickness of this modified layer did not exceed 1 žm. A higher content of Ti was found on the surfaces of the Ti- and N-treated samples only.

In this work we study the superconducting transition in the samples containing relatively small granules of high-T$\text{}_{c}$ Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O superconductors. The samples were obtained by the glass-ceramic technology. Two-stage character of the superconducting transition was studied. Pairing transition temperature depends on the magnetic field. Coherence transition is very sensitive to the current flowing through the sample, magnetic field and the phase composition and microstructure of the sample. The analysis of superconducting transition by means of the logarithmic derivative of the fluctuation conductivity shows the mesoscopic granularity of the samples.

The core-multishell wurtzite structure (In,Ga)As-(Ga,Al)As-(Ga,Mn)As semiconductor nanowires have been successfully grown on GaAs(111)B substrates using MBE technique. The nanowires cores were grown with gold eutectic catalyser in vapour-liquid-solid growth mode. The double shell overgrowth, on the side facets of nanowires, was performed using lower substrate temperature (about 400°C, and 230°C, for (Ga,Al)As, and (Ga,Mn)As shell growth, respectively). The polytypic ordering, defects, chemistry and geometric perfection of the core and the shells have been analysed at atomic level by advanced transmission electron microscope techniques with the use of axial and longitudinal section of individual nanowires prepared by focused ion beam. High quality cross-sections suitable for quantitative transmission electron microscope analysis have been obtained and enabled analysis of interfaces between the core and the shells with near atomic resolution. All investigated shells are epitaxial without misfit dislocations at the interface. Some of the shells thicknesses are not symmetric, which is due to the shadowing effects of neighbouring nanowires and directional character of the elemental fluxes in the MBE growth process.

Opis:
Solid-state nuclear track detectors (SSNTDs) have been used for the registration of charged particles practically since the beginning of the 1960s, when a new class of detectors, called dielectric track detectors, were discovered. The paper describes applications of the SSNTDs type PM-355 for diagnostics of fusion-reaction protons and other ions emitted from plasma focus (PF) devices, tokamaks and laser facilities. Such detectors were also used in biomedical experiments for beam profile measurements. The results of our calibration studies of SSNTDs as well as charged particle- and biomedical measurements, which were carried out within different facilities, are presented.

The low dimensional structures containing III-V ferromagnetic semiconductors were intensively investigated in the last few years because of the variety of their potential applications. The aim of the present work was to study the interlayer exchange coupling in the short period GaMnAs/GaAs superlattices containing 16 or 8 GaMnAs monolayers. Samples with the magnetic layers corresponding to the mixed crystal composition with 5% or 6% of Mn were grown by MBE technique and characterized by both high-resolution X-ray diffraction and Raman scattering methods. Folded acoustic phonons were observed for the first time for this particular quantum system in the Raman scattering spectra. The interlayer exchange coupling in selected superlattices was investigated by both elastic neutron scattering (diffraction) and polarized neutron reflectivity measurements. Presence of the smooth interfaces and the stability of the superlattice period were confirmed by neutron reflectometry data. Ferromagnetic correlation of the magnetization vector in subsequent GaMnAs magnetic layers was demonstrated by both experimental methods.

Opis:
MnAs layer has been grown by means of MBE on the GaN(000$\text{}_{1}$)-(1 x 1) surface. Spontaneous formation of MnAs grains with a diameter of 30-60 nm (as observed by atomic force microscopy) occurred for the layer thickness bigger than 7 ML. Ferromagnetic properties of the layer with Curie temperature higher than 330 K were detected by SQUID measurements. Electronic structure of the system was investigated in situ by resonant photoemission spectroscopy for MnAs layer thickness of 1, 2, and 8 ML. Density of the valence band states of MnAs and its changes due to the increase in the layer thickness were revealed.

Photoemission measurements using synchrotron radiation were performed on PbYbTe (bulk crystal) and CdYbTe (MBE thin film). The resonant enhancement of the photoemission was applied for investigation of the contribution of Yb 4f electrons to the valence band. The set of the energy distribution curves was collected for energies in the region close to the 4d-4f Fano transition. The Yb 4f$\text{}^{14}$ were observed at the binding energies close to the edge of the valence band while the 4f$\text{}^{13}$ states were revealed deep in the valence band.

This paper presents results of the recent plasma-focus (PF) experiments carried out with PF facilities, which was operated at energies ranging from 0.5 MJ to about 1 MJ. Particular attention has been paid to pinch evolution, the emission of pulsed X-ray, fast electron beams, and fusion produced neutrons. Some theoretical models of the initial breakdown, which occurs at the insulator surface, are compared. It is pointed out that modeling of the breakdown is sensitive to kinetics of ionization processes and transport coefficients. Progress in experimental studies of the axial acceleration phase is unsatisfactory. Important experimental data have been collected, but new measurements are still needed. For the radial collapse phase, it was shown that the MHD modeling is efficient until the maximum compression, but plasma instabilities require more sophisticated approaches. The pinch phase was investigated by means of different diagnostics. Fusion neutron yields were measured in different experiments, but some discrepancies in scaling must still be explained. The conclusions concern directions for further studies and optimization of large-scale high-current PF facilities.

The PF-1000 plasma-focus facility in Warsaw, equipped with Mather-type coaxial electrodes working with a deuterium filling, was modified by the addition of a cathode disk in front of the anode front-plate at a distance of 3 cm. The plasma was diagnosed with temporal resolved interferometry and neutron diagnostics. The modified electrode configuration showed an increase of the current in the pinch phase and a decrease of the total neutron yield. The lower total neutron yield is caused by a lower energy of deuterons producing the observed neutrons and by a decrease of the velocity of transformations of the structures in the pinch column.
