Opis:
The factors influencing the atmosphere-ocean transfer of mass and momentum, as well as incipient wave breaking and the amount of energy dissipated due to breaking, are discussed in detail. In particular, the influence of directional spreading on the statistics of surface wave slopes and the area of the wind- roughened ocean surface is demonstrated. Theoretical analysis and comparison with the available experimental data show that unimodal directional spreading is not able to reproduce the observed ratio of the cross-wind/up-wind mean square slopes. Better agreement is achieved when bimodal directional spreading, consisting of two wrapped-Gaussian distributions, is applied. The bimodal form suggested by Ewans (1998) is used in the paper. Moreover, the formulae developed here show that the increase in the area due to surface waves is rather small for both regular and irregular waves.

Opis:
The motion of water due to surface waves is the most dynamic factor observed in the marine environment. In this review various aspects of the wave modelling of non-linear, steep surface waves and their role in the atmosphere-ocean interaction are discussed. Significant improvements in wave forecasting have been made in the last ten years. This is to a large extent related to substantial progress in the description of wind forcing and other processes, as well as to the more efficient use of satellite observations and assimilation methods. One striking observation is the increasing variety and complexity of models in which more physical processes are implemented, greater precision and resolution achieved and extended ranges of applicability demonstrated. However, in order to evaluate the applicability of particular models, comparison with high quality experimental data, collected in nature or under laboratory conditions, is necessary.

Sandy beaches are highly exploited but very dynamic and fragile environments. Driven by waves, the water flow through the beach body is able to transport oxygen, and hence help to maintain biological activity in the porous media. The paper presents a theoretical attempt to predict the groundwater circulation due to wave set-up. Two systems of circulations have been discovered, related to two different gradients of the set-up height. For the offshore gradient, the horizontal excess pressure gradient induces flow in the offshore direction. However, closer to the shore, the pressure gradient is reversed and the resulting flow moves shorewards.

Opis:
Tree transducers are systems which transform trees into trees just as automata transform strings into strings. They produce transformations, i.e. sets consisting of pairs of trees where the first components are trees belonging to a first language and the second components belong to a second language. In this paper we consider hypersubstitutions, i.e. mappings which map operation symbols of the first language into terms of the second one and tree transformations defined by such hypersubstitutions. We prove that the set of all tree transformations which are defined by hypersubstitutions of a given type forms a monoid with respect to the composition of binary relations which is isomorphic to the monoid of all hypersubstitutions of this type. We characterize transitivity, reflexivity and symmetry of tree transformations by properties of the corresponding hypersubstitutions. The results will be applied to languages built up by individual variables and one operation symbol of arity n ≥ 2.

Introduction: Numerous metabolites present in the aqueous extract from plants are responsible for inducing adjuvant activity against rubella and hepatitis B vaccine antigen (HBsAg). One of the medicinal plants, Adhatoda vasica has been pointed out with great potential of vaccine adjuvant property. Objective: The objective of our study is to evaluate the adjuvant potential of aqueous leaves extract of Adhatoda vasica against rubella and hepatitis B vaccine antigen (HBsAg). Methods: For these studies, our group evaluated the antibody (IgG) titre of HBsAg and rubella vaccine antigen using variable doses (0.625–5 mg) of aqueous leaves extract of Adhatoda vasica and also determined the lymphocyte (splenocyte) proliferation assay (0.625–5 mg; 50 µl) in mice model studies ex vivo (i.e. immunized with HBsAg subcutaneously). Results: The results showed that aqueous leaves extract showed anti-HBsAg and anti-rubella titre and also enhanced the lymphocyte proliferation assay at higher doses (5 mg) as compared to control. Conclusion: Aqueous leaves extract of Adhatoda vasica showed adjuvant activity against HBsAg and rubella vaccine antigen.
Wstęp: Wiele metabolitów obecnych w wyciągach wodnych z roślin jest odpowiedzialnych za indukcję adiuwantowej aktywności przeciwko antygenom szczepionek przeciw różyczce i wirusowemu zapaleniu wątroby typu B (HBsAg). Jedna z roślin leczniczych, Adhatoda vasica ma duży potencjał adiuwacyjny w szczepionce. Cel: Celem naszej pracy była ocena możliwości adiuwacyjnych wyciągu wodnego z liści Adhatoda vasica przeciwko antygenowi szczepionki przeciwko różyczce i wirusowemu zapaleniu wątroby typu B (HBsAg). Wniosek: Wyciąg wodny z liści Adhatoda vasica wykazał działanie adiuwacyjne przeciwko antygenowi HBsAg i antygenowi szczepionki przeciwko różyczce.

Revised National Tuberculosis Control Program
multi-drug resistant
India
Opis:
The emergence of resistance to first-line drugs used to treat tuberculosis (TB) has become a significant public health concern and an obstacle in implementation of effective TB control activities globally. In India, Revised National TB Control Program (RNTCP) introduced the programmatic management of drug-resistant TB (PMDT) services to address the needs of MDR-TB patients. To execute the plan with perfection, RNTCP has devised MDR suspect criteria – A, B, and C so that gradually PMDT services can be extended to the whole country. These criteria were framed to run in tandem with the strengthening of the laboratory services so that the existing certified laboratories can carry out the culture and DST services without being overburdened. Altogether, RNTCP is committed for the strengthening and capacity building of its resources to offer culture and DST services right at the time of diagnosis.

An analytical approach was used to model the wave-induced set-up and flow through simple shoal geometry when water depth is a linear function of the distance. Two different approaches were applied to parameterize the energy dissipation due to wave breaking. The resulting set-up height and flow velocity were determined and their dependence on the geometry of the shoal and offshore forcing was demonstrated. The extension of the solution to a more complicated bathymetry and verification against the experimental data will be given in the second part of the paper.

Opis:
Transformation of waves on sandy beaches, their breaking, set-up and run-up are the main factors contributing to fluctuations in the water table and groundwater flow. In this paper, the run-up mechanisms have been studied using analytical models. In contrast to the standard models, the waves approaching the shoreline are assumed to be dispersive and the equivalence of the non-linear and linear solutions for the extreme characteristics of wave run-up, such as the height of maximum run-up and the velocity of run-up, are used. A linear system of equations for the run-up of breaking waves is developed. This system is based on the application of the mild-slope equation in the deeper area, where waves are dispersive, while the linear equations of shallow water are applied close to the shoreline, where the water depth is a linear function of distance. The dissipation factor in the shallow water equation has been formulated using its resemblance to the mild-slope equation for a non-permeable sea bottom. Application of the method is illustrated for various bottom profiles and wave characteristics, and theoretical results compared well with experimental data. These solutions of the run-up phenomena will assist future studies on wave-induced beach groundwater flow.

The new genus Tulepyge includes a type species, T. tulensis nov., from the Barn Canyon Member of the House Formation, western Utah, USA, and T. paucituberculata from the Broom Point Member of the Green Point Formation, western Newfoundland, Canada. Both species are earliest Ordovician in age, with occurrence immediately above the Cambrian–Ordovician boundary. Together with the hystricurid taxon Millardicurus, the new genus is likely to serve as an indicator fossil for the Cambrian–Ordovician boundary in Laurentia, as it is already known from different biofacies on opposite margins of the continent. Tulepyge is not closely comparable with contemporaneous taxa assigned to Hystricuridae but in its dorsally convex and coarsely tuberculate exoskeleton it resembles taxa which have been referred to Dimeropygidae, most of which are considerably younger in age.

International standards for Tuberculosis care
India
Opis:
Tuberculosis (TB) is a social disease with medical aspects accounting for 8.7 million new cases and 1.4 million deaths in the year 2011 worldwide. International standards for TB care (ISTC) were formulated to develop uniform guidelines for ensuring the delivery of a widely accepted level of care by all health care practitioners in managing TB patients, or those suspected to have tuberculosis. India alone has contributed 25% of the globally reported new cases of TB in 2011 and is also the leading nation in accounting for drug resistant TB (DR-TB). Thus to develop uniform standards of TB care and to engage private sector which caters to more than 70% of TB patients, the “central TB division” has developed standards of TB care in India (STCI). These local standards have been designed after taking into account the guidelines of the World Health Organization and ISTC disease control STCI has proposed 26 standards (viz. diagnosis – 1 to 6; treatment – 7 to 11; public health – 12 to 21; social inclusion – 22 to 26) for effective prevention and control of TB. To conclude, the Indian standards of TB care have been proposed to emphasize on individual patient care and public health principles of disease control for ultimately reducing not only the suffering but also the economic losses from tuberculosis.
