Operation of ship propulsion system is associated with realization of definite operational goals. If to elements of the system the operational reliability strategy could be applied, the situation would be very simple as existing conditions would unambiguously determine application of means being on hand. However decision to reject application of the strategy (even if hypothetical) becomes obvious with a view of necessity of ensuring an acceptable level of safety to ship and environment as well as presence of associated formal and legal limitations. Therefore complexity of operational reality makes that means intended for operation may be used in various ways. Objectivity and rationality in making decision, assumed optimal in given conditions, forces to apply an evaluating (quantitative) approach to the problem, hence to search for such their parameters (indices) which, in a given decision situation, can be deemed most adequate. To precisely determine the task it is necessary to specify also its duration time, apart from conditions in which it will be realized. When considering propulsion engine, i.e. the main element of ship propulsion system, especially important becomes not only the problem which amount of energy could be at one's disposal but also within which time interval it could be delivered. Therefore apart from applying the commonly used reliability indices, it seems sensible to consider the operation in such evaluating approach as it could be determined by energy and time simultaneously.

During rational operation of technical objects and systems various operational decisions are made and decision-making process itself should be consisted in selecting that considered most favourable out of all possible to be taken. Choice of such decision is possible after taking into account many different information items but it never be completely correct without accounting for data and indices dealing with reliability. In the case when probabilistic principle of failure occurrence is determined , values of reliability indices can be estimated by using reliability mathematical models. During operation of many technical devices and systems ( e.g. ship main propulsion systems ) was observed many times the fact that their correct operation time is not a unique measure of their wear. Therefore for description of their serviceability and reliability can be used models of change of their reliability states in the form of semi-Markov processes based on the assumption of multi-state character of technical objects. This paper presents a comparative analysis of results of simulation reliability tests of a hypothetical technical object , obtained with the use of reliability models in the form of Markov processes and semi-Markov ones, corresponding to them, called also “half-Markov” processes.

The paper presents the proposal to apply the normal distribution to solve the problemof the frequency of diagnostic tests. Particular emphasis is placed on simplicity of the method. This method may be useful for the average user technical system. The method reduces the number of assumptions to a minimum. This paper presents a development of the known qualitative method for assessment of engine operation, applied to ship main diesel engine as an example. According to this interpretation engine operation can be presented as a physical quantity. In this aspect, based on the selected functional system of the engine, was assessed usefulness of the quantity for description reliability features of the system. To the analysis was applied Poisson's uniform process which made it possible to elaborate a model of run of worsening the considered system's operation taken as a random process of identical independent decreases of energy efficiency within a given time interval. The presented method is a valuable supplement for description reliability features of ship main engine what is important for realization of shipping tasks by sea. Additional advantage is versatility which makes that it can be applied to reliability analysis of any ship device or ship energy subsystem. Classification of the engine serviceability states with taking into account the assessment of its operation in energy-time aspect, schematic diagram of lubricating system of RTA48-TB engine and values of lubricating oil parameters in steady conditions for the engine load, graphical presentation of lubricating oil cooler operation graphical interpretation of the decreasing of oil cooler efficiency are presented in the paper

Predicting the reliability of marine internal combustion engines, for instance, is of particular importance, as it makes it possible to predict their future reliability states based on the information on the past states. Correct reliability prediction is a complex process which consists in processing empirical results obtained from operating practice, complemented by analytical considerations. The process of technical state changes of each mechanical device is stochastic and continuous in states and time, hence the need to divide this infinite set of engine states into a finite number of subsets (classes), which can be clearly and permanently identified using the existing diagnosing system. Using the engine piston-crankshaft system as an example, the article presents a proposal for a mathematical model of reliability which, on the one hand, takes into account random nature of phenomena leading to the damage, and at the same time reveals certain application flexibility and the resultant practical usability.

This paper presents possible use of results of exhaust gas composition testing of self - ignition engine for technical state assessment of its charge exchange system under assumption that there is strong correlation between considered structure parameters and output signals in the form of concentration of toxic compounds (ZT) as well as unambiguous character of their changes. Concentration of the analyzed ZT may be hence considered to be symptoms of engine technical state. At given values of the signals and their estimates it is also possible to determine values of residues which may indicate a type of failure. Available tool programs aimed at analysis of experimental data commonly make use of multiple regression model which allows to investigate effects and interaction between model input quantities and one output variable. Application of multi-equation models provides great freedom during analysis of measurement data as it makes it possible to simultaneously analyze effects and interaction of many output variables. It may be also implemented as a tool for preparation of experimental material for other advanced diagnostic tools such as neural networks which , in contrast to multi-equation models, make it possible to recognize a state at multistate classification and - in consequence – to do diagnostic inference. Here , these authors present merits of application of the above mentioned analytical tools on the example of tests conducted on an experimental engine test stand.

In this paper selected issues concerning vibration diagnosis of the mechanical system within marine propulsion units have been presented, carried out on the basis of experimental examinations of a real object in which an exceedance of the allowable vibration’s level had been observed. Used diagnosing system has been characterised. A procedure of longitudinal and transverse vibrations shaft lines of the mechanical system within marine propusion measurement was presented, with use of portable vibration computerized data logger as well as on the method of vibrations spectral-correlation analysis as a basis of diagnostic process considering dynamic state of analyzed system. Analyzis that has been carried out enabled the selection of the most probable causes for the loss of mechanical system stability. The relevance of the diagnosis was confirmed by the workshop measurements of the torque transmission elements as well as visual inspection of the propellers while the ship was put on a dock.
W referacie przedstawiono wybrane zagadnienia diagnostyki drganiowej okrętowego zespołu napędowego, na przykładzie eksploatacyjnych badań obiektu rzeczywistego, na którym zaobserwowano zwiększony poziom drgań. Scharakteryzowano zastosowany system diagnozujący. Zaprezentowano procedurę pomiaru drgań wzdłużnych i poprzecznych linii walów okrętowego układu napędowego, z zastosowaniem przenośnego rejestratora drgań oraz metodykę ich analizy widmowo-korelacyjnej, jako podstawę wnioskowania diagnostycznego o stanie dynamicznym rozpatrywanego układu. Przeprowadzona analiza pozwoliła na wskazanie najbardziej prawdopodobnych przyczyn utraty stabilności układu mechanicznego. Trafność postawionej diagnozy potwierdziła weryfikacja warsztatowa elementów transmisji momentu obrotowego oraz oględziny śrub napędowych podczas postoju okrętu w doku.

Opis:
A visual investigation of surfaces creating internal, working spaces of marine combustion engines by means of specialized view-finders so called endoscopes is at present almost a basic method of technical diagnostics. The surface structure of constructional material is visible during investigations like through the magnifying glass (usually with a precisely determined magnification), which makes possible a detection, recognition and if possible, quantitative evaluation of the failures and material defects appearing, and in result – an opinion of the waste degree and the dirt intensity of studied constructional elements. This is an especially important advantage while the failures do not generate observable values of diagnostic parameters. Endoscopic investigation of the machine being switched off from motion enables evaluation of its construc-tional elements’ waste and dirt almost at once. The paper deals with diagnostic issues concerning endoscopic examinations of the working spaces within marine diesel and gas turbine engines. In the beginning, endoscopy apparatus being on laboratory equipment of the Department of Ship Power Plants of Gdansk University of Technology in Poland has been characterized. The endoscopy considerations have been focused on theoretical bases of a digital image processing and especially - on the “Shadow” and “Phase 3D” measurement method. There has been carried out a comparative analysis of these methods’ efficiency and effectiveness in the real conditions of the diagnostic investigations performance of the engines built in the marine power plant.
Badanie wizualne powierzchni tworzących przestrzenie robocze silników okrętowych z zastosowaniem specjalistycznych wzierników tzw. endoskopów to obecnie niemal podstawowa metoda diagnostyki technicznej. Struktura powierzchniowa materiału konstrukcyjnego widoczna jest podczas badań jak przez lupę, zazwyczaj w pewnym powiększeniu, co umożliwia wykrycie, rozpoznanie i ewentualną ocenę ilościową występujących defektów i wad materiałowych, które zazwyczaj nie generują obserwowalnych zmian wartości parametrów diagnostycznych. W artykule przedstawiono wybrane zagadnienia diagnostyki endoskopowej przestrzeni roboczych okrętowych turbinowych i tłokowych silników spalinowych. Scharakteryzowano endoskopową aparaturę diagnostyczną będącą na wyposażeniu bazy laboratoryjnej Katedry Siłowni Okrętowych Politechniki Gdańskiej. Przybliżono podstawy teoretyczne przetwarzania obrazu w endoskopii cyfrowej, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem metody pomiarowej „Cienia” i „Fazowej 3D”. Przeprowadzono analizę porównawczą efektywności i skuteczności zastosowania każdej z metod w rzeczywistych warunkach realizacji badań diagnostycznych silników zabudowanych w siłowni okrętowej.

The paper presents the possibility of using an analytical study of the engine exhaust ignition to evaluate the technical condition of the selected components. Software tools available for the analysis of experimental data commonly use multiple regression model that allows the study of the effects and iterations between model input quantities and one output variable. The use of multi-equation models gives a lot of freedom in the analysis of the measurement results, as it allows the simultaneous analysis of multiple effects and iterations of output variables. It can also be used as a tool for the preparation of experimental material for other advanced diagnostic tools, such as models using neural networks, which allow, in contrast to multi-equation models, the recognition of the state with the number of classes of more than two-class, thus enabling diagnostic reasoning. Assuming that there is a strong correlation and unambiguous nature of the changes in the concentrations of toxic compounds analyzed in the course of the experiment can be seen as symptoms of the technical condition of the engine and with the known values of the output signals (including concentrations of toxic compounds) and their estimates, the values of residuals can be determined, which may indicate the type of damage. The authors show the advantages of using these analytical tools on the example of research conducted on the engine test bench.
W artykule przedstawiono możliwość wykorzystania wyników badań składu spalin silnika z zapłonem samoczynnym do oceny stanu technicznego jego wybranych podzespołów. Dostępne programy narzędziowe służące do analizy danych eksperymentalnych powszechnie wykorzystują model regresji wielokrotnej, który umożliwia badanie efektów i interacji pomiędzy wielkościami wejściowymi modelu a jedną zmienną wyjściową. Zastosowanie modeli wielorównaniowych daje wiele możliwości podczas analizy wyników pomiarowych, gdyż umożliwia jednoczesną analizę efektów i interacji wielu zmiennych wyjściowych. Może być również wykorzystywane jako narzędzie do przygotowania materiału doświadczalnego dla innych zaawansowanych narzędzi diagnostycznych, takich jak modele wykorzystujące sieci neuronowe, które pozwalają, w przeciwieństwie do modeli wielorównaniowych, na rozpoznanie stanu przy liczbie klas większej niż dwuklasowa, umożliwiając tym samym wnioskowanie diagnostyczne. Przy założeniu bowiem, że istnieje silna korelacja oraz jednoznaczny charakter zmian stężeń analizowanych związków toksycznych w trakcie prowadzonego eksperymentu można traktować jako symptomy stanu technicznego silnika a przy znanych wartościach sygnałów wyjściowych (między innymi stężeń związków toksycznych) oraz ich estymat można wyznaczyć wartości residuów, które mogą wskazywać na rodzaj uszkodzenia. Autorzy w pracy przedstawiają zalety stosowania powyższych narzędzi analitycznych na przykładzie badań przeprowadzonych na stanowisku silnika badawczego.

This paper presents a method which makes it possible to determine reliability characteristics of navigational positioning systems, relevant to an assumed value of permissible error in position fixing. The method allows to calculate : availability, reliability as well as operation continuity of position fixing system for an assumed, determined on the basis of formal requirements - both worldwide and national, position-fixing accuracy. The proposed mathematical model allows to satisfy, by any navigational positioning system, not only requirements as to position-fixing accuracy of a given navigational application ( for air, sea or land traffic ) but also the remaining characteristics associated with technical serviceability of a system. Essence of the method in question consists in the working-out of recorded empirical position-fixing data as well as the making use of multi-state Markov processes ( appropriate to a maximum error value permissible for various navigational applications ) as a result of which reliability characteristics based on real data would be determined. About usefulness of a given navigational positioning system for its possible application would decide a vector of variables (both dealing with position and reliability) which satisfies / or does not satisfy/ formal navigational requirements for a given application.

Contemporary engine tests are performed based on the theory of experiment. The available versions of programmes used for analysing experimental data make frequent use of the multiple regression model, which enables examining effects and interactions between input model parameters and a single output variable. The use of multi-equation models provides more freedom in analysing the measured results, as those models enable simultaneous analysis of effects and interactions between many output variables. They can also be used as a tool in preparing experimental material for other advanced diagnostic tools, such as the models making use of neural networks which, when properly prepared, enable also analysing measurement results recorded during dynamic processes. The article presents advantages of the use of the abovementioned analytical tools and a sample application of the neural model developed based on the results of examination carried out on the engine research rig.

Within the article, basic assumptions of the research project financed by Regional Fund for Environmental Protection and Water in Gdansk were described. The project concerns the experimental investigations carried out on laboratory compression-ignition engine in conditions of its supply with a non-standard marine fuel oil. Configuration and measuring capability of laboratory test bed presently being constructed were introduced. The concept of engine tests implementation as well as a general outline of research methodology was characterised. After being accepted by Polish Committee for Standardization they could become an effective and efficient verification tool for various types of modified fuel oils introduced on the market, both for the maritime administration offices and shipyards as well as ship owners in operation.

Opis:
Glue, a formaldehyde (HCOH) based resin, is an indispensable constituent of wood-based boards. However, formaldehyde evaporates during the manufacturing process, during exposure (furniture), and also during waste disposal. Since it belongs to the group of carcinogenic compounds, restrictions on its emission from wood-based boards have been imposed all over the world. Among the methods developed for diminishing this toxic emission, there have been the synthesis of the glue which permits reducing the mol percent of HCOH, or binding HCOH in situ by ammonium salts. In this study we propose a solution of the problem, namely a new glue, based on poly-silicon polymers, which has an optimized viscosity and wets the wood well. The new ligno-cellulose/poly-silicon composite has the required mechanical properties and is absolutely harmless to the environment.

Opis:
Development of technology for exhaust gas desulfurization in marine engines using the dry method is, nowadays, a priority due to the calendar of introducing restrictions by the Directive of the European Parliament and of the Council 2012/33/EU of 21 November 2012. According to this directive, starting from 1 January 2015, inside the SECA (Sulphur Emission Control Area) the maximum sulfur content of marine fuels used on territorial seas is 0.1% per weight unit. But at the same time the directive allows for the use of exhaust gas desulfurization plant operating in a closed system. The ship equipped with the system will be able to use fuels with a high sulfur content, which will then be removed from the exhaust gas through an applied adsorber, and the reacted adsorbent is received by specialized services stationed in harbors. The International Maritime Organization has set a limit value of the emissions of sulfur oxides in exhaust gases of marine engines at 6 g/kWh (International Convention for the Prevention of Sea Pollution from Ships MARPOL 73/78 Annex VI, Regulation 14). Contemporary methods of exhaust gas desulfurization in marine engines are all expensive methods (4-5 million euro). This is, among other reasons, due to the limited market audience, but primarily due to the monopolized position of manufacturers offering fabrication and assembly of this type of marine ship installations. Proposed as part of a research project financed by the Regional Fund for Environmental Protection and Maritime Economy in Gdansk, the dry method (adsorption) reducing SOx emissions in exhaust gases of marine engines, is an alternative, and a definitely cheaper and therefore competitive solution, compared to the wet methods (absorption), which are currently the most widely used in marine scrubber installations. Importantly, as confirmed by the results of the study, the proposed dry method, in addition to the effective reduction of sulfur oxides, also reduces emissions of nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide. The paper presents the configuration and measurement capabilities of the test station built under the project, as well as the representative results of the investigations so far. During the exhaust gas desulfurization test a sodium adsorbent (sodium bicarbonate) and its modifications were used in the process of mechanical, chemical, and thermal activation. Two physicochemical processes were studied during the development of the method: of adsorbent’s reaction on the chemical emission of the exhaust gas – the effectiveness of SOx and NOx compound removal, with various structural solutions in the process reactor, the impact of the adsorber on the emission source of sulfur oxides, that is, on the compression-ignition engine. Therefore, one of the priorities of the project, with a utilitarian significance, was to determine the impact of the inclusion of the desulfurization installation in the exhaust gas system on the energy ratios of the engine.
