Opis:
Operation of a passive autocatalytic hydrogen recombiner (PAR) has been investigated by means of computational fluid dynamics methods (CFD). The recombiner is a self-active and self-adaptive device used to remove hydrogen from safety containments of light water nuclear reactors (LWR) by means of a highly exothermic reaction with oxygen at the surface of a platinum or palladium catalyst. Different turbulence models (k-ω, k-ε, intermittency, RSM) were applied in numerical simulations of : gas flow, heat and mass transport and chemical surface reactions occurring in PAR. Turbulence was found to improve mixing and mass transfer and increase hydrogen recombination rate for high gas flow rates. At low gas flow rates, simulation results converged to those obtained for the limiting case of laminar flow. The large eddy simulation technique (LES) was used to select the best RANS (Reynolds average stress) model. Comparison of simulation results obtained for two- and three-dimensional computational grids showed that heat and mass transfer occurring in PAR were virtually two-dimensional processes. The effect of hydrogen thermal diffusion was also discussed in the context of possible hydrogen ignition inside the recombiner.

Opis:
A passive autocatalytic hydrogen recombiner (PAR) is a self-starting device, without operator action or external power input, installed in nuclear power plants to remove hydrogen from the containment building of a nuclear reactor. A new mechanistic model of PAR has been presented and validated by experimental data and results of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations. The model allows to quickly and accurately predict gas temperature and composition, catalyst temperature and hydrogen recombination rate. It is assumed in the model that an exothermic recombination reaction of hydrogen and oxygen proceeds at the catalyst surface only, while processes of heat and mass transport occur by assisted natural and forced convection in non-isothermal and laminar gas flow conditions in vertical channels between catalyst plates. The model accounts for heat radiation from a hot catalyst surface and has no adjustable parameters. It can be combined with an equation of chimney draft and become a useful engineering tool for selection and optimisation of catalytic recombiner geometry.

Opis:
Heterogeneous catalytic recombination of hydrogen with oxygen is one of the methods used to remove hydrogen from the containment of a light-water nuclear reactor (LWR). Inside a passive autocatalytic recombiner (PAR), hydrogen and oxygen molecules are adsorbed at catalyst active spots and they recombine to yield water. Heat released in this exothermic reaction creates natural convection of gas in the spaces between the elements supporting a catalyst. Hot and humid gas fl ows upwards into the PAR chimney, while fresh, hydrogen-rich gas enters the PAR from below. Catalytic recombination should start spontaneously at room temperature and low hydrogen concentration. Computational fl uid dynamics (CFD) has been used to study the dynamic behaviour of a plate-type Areva FR-380 recombiner in a quiescent environment for several test scenarios, including different rates of increase in hydrogen concentration and temporary catalyst deactivation. A method for the determination of pressure boundary conditions at the PAR exits was proposed and implemented into a CFD code. In this way, transient operation of PAR could be simulated without the need to model gas circulation outside the device. It was found that fi rst a slow downward fl ow of gas is developed, which may persist until the temperature of the catalyst foils rises. As soon as the gas inside the PAR absorbs enough heat to become lighter than the gas outside the PAR, it starts to fl ow upwards. Criteria for determining the start-up time of PAR were proposed. Model predictions were also compared with experimental data obtained in tests conducted at the THAI facility.

Opis:
The process of destabilisation of an axi-symmetric, core-annular flow (CAF) of two Newtonian fully miscible liquids widely differing in viscosity is investigated. Formation of periodic structures is observed in experiments, predicted by the linear stability theory and simulated numerically using the volume of fluid method (VOF). Possible influence of this phenomenon on mixing on the molecular scale is discussed.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of experimental study of reactive laminar mixing in a tubular reactor made up of a succession of pipe bends, alternately rotated by 90° with respect to the preceding bend. A system of competitive parallel reactions: acid-base neutralization and ester hydrolysis were used in the experiments. It was found that selectivity of test reactions depends strongly on the Reynolds number in a range of 80 < Re < 1200. The Dean roll-cells, formed in consecutive pipe bends, periodically change their orientation resulting in chaotic advection and faster mixing. A material processed in this mixer is not exposed to high shear rate or fouling, and pressure drop is low. Such features of an on-line mixer are desirable in the polymer, cosmetic and food industry.
Przedstawiono wyniki badań doświadczalnych mieszania laminarnego z reakcją chemiczną w reaktorze rurowym w formie giętych kolan, przekręconych naprzemiennie względem siebie o kąt 90°. W eksperymentach użyto reakcji konkurencyjnych i równoległych: neutralizacji kwasu zasadą i hydrolizy alkalicznej estru. Wykazano, że selektywność reakcji testowych silnie zależy od liczby Reynoldsa w przedziale 80 < Re <1200. Komórki Deana, powstałe w kolejnych wygiętych odcinkach rur, periodycznie zmieniają swoją orientację, co prowadzi do powstania chaotycznej adwekcji i przyspiesza mieszanie.

Opis:
Transport properties of bronchial mucus are investigated by two-stage experimental approach focused on: (a) rheological properties and (b) mass transfer rate through the stagnant layer of solutions of mucus components (mucine, DNA, proteins) and simulated multi-component mucus. Studies were done using thermostated horizontal diffusion cells with sodium cromoglycate and carminic acid as transferred solutes. Rheological properties of tested liquids was studied by a rotational viscometer and a cone-plate rheometer (dynamic method). First part of the studies demonstrated that inter-molecular interactions in these complex liquids influence both rheological and permeability characteristics. Transfer rate is governed not only by mucus composition and concentration but also by hydrophobic/hydrophilic properties of transported molecules. Second part was focused on the properties of such a layer in presence of selected nanostructured particles (different nanoclays and graphene oxide) which may be present in lungs after inhalation. It was shown that most of such particles increase visco-elasticity of the mucus and reduce the rate of mass transfer of model drugs. Measured effects may have adverse impact on health, since they will reduce mucociliary clearance in vivo and slow down drug penetration to the bronchial epithelium during inhalation therapy.
