Opis:
Limited independent walking and the resulting disabilities are a serious issue for a growing group of patients. These patients are often dependent on a wheelchair, or are bedridden until the end of their lives. For this reason, the development of gait re-education methods and devices for mechanical gait assistance are very important elements in maintaining or regaining a high quality of daily and social life. New technologies allow for the construction of devices that support the rehabilitation process, which reduce the workload of therapists and ensure the best execution of the patients’ movement patterns. This paper presents the development of devices used for the mechanical support of gait starting from the simplest ones like treadmills or standing frames, through stationary robots, to the most technologically advanced ones, i.e. exoskeletons. An exoskeleton is a wearable robot which supports, or in some cases, substitutes for the user’s own movements. The first attempts to create such devices were undertaken 40 years ago. This paper discusses their clinical applications and their effectiveness in gait re-education based on the existing scientific evidence. These new technologies in gait re-education are now becoming an integral part of the rehabilitation process.

Opis:
This paper attempts to conduct a comparative life cycle environmental analysis of alternative versions of a product that was manufactured with the use of additive technologies. The aim of the paper was to compare the environmental assessment of an additive-manufactured product using two approaches: a traditional one, based on the use of SimaPro software, and the authors’ own concept of a newly developed artificial intelligence (AI) based approach. The structure of the product was identical and the research experiments consisted in changing the materials used in additive manufacturing (from polylactic acid (PLA) to acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS)). The effects of these changes on the environmental factors were observed and a direct comparison of the effects in the different factors was made. SimaPro software with implemented databases was used for the analysis. Missing information on the environmental impact of additive manufacturing of PLA and ABS parts was taken from the literature for the purpose of the study. The novelty of the work lies in the results of a developing concurrent approach based on AI. The results showed that the artificial intelligence approach can be an effective way to analyze life cycle assessment (LCA) even in such complex cases as a 3D printed medical exoskeleton. This approach, which is becoming increasingly useful as the complexity of manufactured products increases, will be developed in future studies.

Introduction and aim. Endometriosis is a common inflammatory disease affecting 6-10% of women of reproductive age. It is defined as the growth of endometrial-like tissue outside the uterine cavity. Dysmenorrhea, pelvic pain, dyspareunia and infertility are the main symptoms of endometriosis patients. Endometriosis treatment methods can be broadly divided into surgical and pharmacological. Currently, hormonal drugs are often used for women with endometriosis to relieve bothersome symptoms. The aim of this article is to review new publications presenting the effectiveness as well as side effects of the use of progestins and combined oral contraceptives in the hormonal treatment of endometriosis. Material and methods. A review of the literature regarding progestins and combined oral contraceptives in the treatment of endometriosis was performed using the PubMed database. In the end, 67 articles were included in this review. Analysis of the literature. Progestins and combined oral contraceptives significantly reduce dysmenorrhea, dyspareunia and pelvic pain in women with endometriosis. However, there is a risk of potential side effects, which should be taken into account when choosing a therapy for each patient individually. Conclusion. Endometriosis is a chronic disease that has a significant impact on the health-related quality of life of patients. When choosing a treatment, many aspects should be considered, primarily the patient’s preferences, drug tolerance and safety. Further drug research is needed to determine the most effective treatment for endometriosis.
