Opis:
The Cleveland Shale fauna represents a unique view of the time after a major Devonian extinction event (Frasnian–Famenian) with the recovery of arthrodires (Placodermi) best represented by this most specious North American fauna. This time was followed by an additional event (Hangenberg Biocrisis) leading to the extinction of arthrodires (and all other placoderms). An understanding of the diversity and interrelationships of North American arthrodires can aid our understanding of this critical time in vertebrate evolution. A new aspinothoracid arthrodire Hlavinichthys jacksoni gen. et sp. nov. is described from the Late Devonian of northern Ohio, U.S.A., which adds to our knowledge of this group. It provides a point of comparison to other members of the fauna whose interrelationships are poorly known. A phylogenetic analysis supports an assignment of Hlavinichthys jacksoni gen. et sp. nov. among the aspinothoracid arthrodires. This work has drawn attention to the continued need for descriptive and phylogenetic analyses of this unique fauna. Decades old species descriptions need revision along with preparation and description of new taxa. The work on Hlavinichthys jacksoni gen. et sp. nov. here is one step in that process.

Urban areas are characterised by the impact of negative environmental factors, such as: stress connected with extreme bio-thermal conditions or the presence of high concentrations of air pollutants. This study aims to evaluate the relationship between the hours of O3 concentrations and the levels of physiological strain (PhS) in Legnica, during the period from December 2013 to November 2014. The hourly concentrations of O3, NO2 and meteorological elements used in the study were obtained from the State Environmental Monitoring station in Legnica (Lower Silesia). The evaluation of the bio-thermal conditions was carried out by means of the physiological strain indicator (PhS). The basic statistics were subject to analysis, the frequency of hourly pollution concentrations and the thermal strain were evaluated, as was the Pearson correlation coefficient and multiple regression between O3 and PhS. A detailed analysis was carried out for the summer months (June-August). The most adverse conditions in terms of pollution with tropospheric ozone and heat strain were noted in July. The strongest relations between O3 and PhS were observed in June. In winter months (December-February) no significant dependencies were noted between the tested variables. These tests will help to contribute to increasing the current knowledge on evaluating the thermal comfort of urbanised areas and the accompanying aero-sanitary conditions.

Opis:
Six enigmatic fossils from the Famennian (Devonian) Cleveland Shale in Ohio, U.S.A., are interpreted here as arthrodiran (Placodermi) egg cases. Recognition as egg cases is confirmed based on the observation of layered collagen fibers. The presence of a tuberculated bone fragment preserved within one case confirms a vertebrate source. The nature of the tubercles and the unique morphology of the egg cases supports the interpretation of an arthrodiran source. Reports of Devonian egg cases are limited to either assumed chondrichthyan producers or a putative ‘egg sac’ with a morphology atypical for any vertebrate. The Cleveland Shale egg cases thus represent the first record for a non-chondrichthyan producer. Among placoderms, behaviors of a pelagic life style with obligate nesting sites, reef fishes with live birth, and estuarine and fluvial nurseries, along with eggcase oviparity testifies to the diversity of reproductive strategies. As with modern fishes these strategies may be ecologically driven and the derived and variable reproductive biology of extant chondrichthyans is actually a primitive condition among gnathostomes. One consequence of the diversity of reproductive strategies (dependent on the topology of relationships) is the independent origin of internal fertilization within placoderms, possibly suggesting external fertilization as the primitive gnathostome reproductive mode.

Opis:
Underground mining activities are prone to major hazards largely owing to geotechnical reasons. Mining combined with the confined working space and uncertain geotechnical data leads to hazards having the potential of catastrophic consequences. These incidents have the potential of causing multiple fatalities and large financial damages. Use of formal risk assessment in the past has demonstrated an important role in the prediction and prevention of accidents in risk prone industries such as petroleum, nuclear and aviation. This paper proposes a classification system for underground mining operations based on their geotechnical risk levels. The classification is done based on the type of mining method employed and the rock mass in which it is carried out. Mining methods have been classified in groups which offer similar geotechnical risk. The rock mass classification has been proposed based on bulk rock mass properties which are collected as part of the routine mine planning. This classification has been subdivided for various stages of mine planning to suit the extent of available data. Alpha-numeric coding has been proposed to identify a mining operation based on the competency of rock and risk of geotechnical failures. This alpha numeric coding has been further extended to identify mining activity under "Geotechnical Hazard Potential (GHP)". GHP has been proposed to be used as a preliminary tool of risk assessment and risk ranking for a mining activity. The aim of such classification is to be used as a guideline for the justification of a formal geotechnical risk assessment.
W niniejszej pracy zaproponowano system klasyfikacji operacji w górnictwie podziemnym w oparciu o poziom zagrożenia geotechnicznego. Klasyfikacji dokonano uwzględniając zastosowaną metodę urabiania oraz rodzaj urabianego górotworu. Przedstawiono kategorie metod urabiania o podobnym poziomie zagrożenia geotechnicznego.

Opis:
The cotton leafhopper (Amrasca biguttula biguttula Ishida) is considered to be an alarming insect pest causing both quantitative and qualitative loss in cotton. In situ bioassay studies were done and the role of detoxifying enzymes in conferring resistance to neonicotinoid groups of insecticides in low (MUD), medium (DVG), high (HVR) and very high (GLB) pesticide usage areas of Karnataka were determined. Bioassay studies showed that imidacloprid, thiamethoxam, acetamiprid, thiacloprid and clothianidin registered varying levels of resistance for all the locations studied. The resistance ratio was high in imidacloprid (3.35, 8.57, 9.15 and 12.27 fold respectively) and the lowest in dinoferuran (1.86, 5.13, 6.71 and 9.88 fold respectively). Furthermore, the enzyme activity ratio (glutathione-S-transferase) was relatively greater, and corresponded to the higher LC50 values of neonicotinoids for very high, high, medium and low pesticide usage areas. Our study suggested that the higher activity of the detoxifying enzyme in the resistance population of cotton leafhopper apparently has a significant role in endowing resistance to neonicotinoid groups of insecticides. However, this study recommends using neonicotinoids in cotton growing areas with caution.

Purpose: After a thorough study of literature it is concluded that the studies related to unskirted/skirted octagonal footings on sand have not yet been investigated. Thus, this paper presents a numerical analysis to assess the ultimate bearing capacity of the unskirted, unskirted-embedded, singly and doubly skirted octagonal footings resting on different sands (S1, S2, and S3). The length of skirt and depth of the embedded footing were varied from 0.0B to 1.5B. Design/methodology/approach: The numerical square and octagonal footing with singly and doubly skirted footing models were developed using Plaxis 3D software. Findings: The results of the doubly skirted octagonal footings ultimate bearing capacity were marginally higher in comparison to the singly skirted footing at all normalised skirt depths as well as for all sands up to a Ds/B ratio 0.25 beyond which the increase in the ultimate bearing capacity in case of doubly skirted footing was appreciable. Research limitations/implications: The results presented in this paper were based on numerical analysis. However, for the actual footings the soil placement and compaction, details of skirt construction and the stress level will be different from the numerical analysis. Further investigations using full-scale numerical models simulating field size footings were recommended to generalize the results. Originality/value: No such study on singly and doubly skirted octagonal shaped footings were conducted so far. Hence, an attempt was made in this article to predict the bearing capacity of those footings using Plaxis 3D.

Four binary polymer -solvent systems, poly(styrene)-tetrahydrofuran, poly(styrene) - p-xylene, poly(methyl methacrylate) - ethylbenzene and poly(methyl methacrylate) - tetrahydrofuran, systems have been studied. It has been observed that thicker coatings will retain a higher amount of the residual solvent as compared to thinner coatings. In the case of poly(styrene)-tetrahydrofuran coating residual solvent remaining within the coatings were 9.09% and 4.74% for the coatings of the thicknesses of 967 micron and 559 micron, respectively. Similar trends were also observed in the case of poly(methyl methacrylate)-ethylbenzene, poly(methyl methacrylate)-tetrahydrofuran, and poly(styrene)-p-xylene systems.

Opis:
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the ultimate bearing capacity of the rectangular footing resting over layered sand using finite element method. Design/methodology/approach: Finite element analysis was used to investigate the dimensionless ultimate bearing capacity of the rectangular footing resting on a limited thickness of upper dense sand layer overlying limitless thickness of lower loose sand layer. The friction angle of the upper dense sand layer was varied from 41° to 46° whereas for the lower loose sand layer it was varied from 31° to 36°. Findings: The results reveal that the dimensionless ultimate bearing capacity was found to increase up to an H/W ratio of about 1.75 beyond which the increase was marginal. The results further reveal that the dimensionless ultimate bearing capacity was the maximum for the upper dense and lower loose sand friction angles of 46° and 36°, while it was the lowest for the upper dense and lower loose sands corresponding to the friction angle of 41° and 31°. For H/W = 0.5 and 2, the dimensionless bearing capacity decreases with the increase in the L/W ratio from 0.5 to 6 beyond which the dimensionless ultimate bearing capacity remains constant for all combinations of parameters. The results were presented in nondimensional manner and compared with the previous studies available in literature. Research limitations/implications: The analysis is performed using a ABAQUS 2017 software. The limitation of this study is that only finite element analysis is performed without conducting any experiments in the laboratory. Further the study is conducted only for the vertical loading. Practical implications: This proposed numerical study can be used to predict the ultimate bearing capacity of the rectangular footing resting on layered sand. Originality/value: The present study gives idea about the ultimate bearing capacity of rectangular footing when placed on layered sand (dense sand over loose sand) as well as the effect of thickness of top dense sand layer on the ultimate bearing capacity. The findings could be used to calculate the ultimate bearing capacity of the rectangular footing on layered sand.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to estimate the ultimate bearing capacity of the E-shaped footing resting on two layered sand using finite element method. The solution was implemented using ABACUS software. Design/methodology/approach: The numerical study of the ultimate bearing capacity of the E-shaped footing resting on layered sand and subjected to vertical load was carried out using finite element analysis. The layered sand was having an upper layer of loose sand of thickness H and lower layer was considered as dense sand of infinite depth. The various parameters varied were the friction angle of the upper (30° to 34°) and lower (42° to 46°) layer of sand as well as the thickness (0.5B, 2B and 4B) of the upper sand layer. Findings: The results reveal that the dimensionless ultimate bearing capacity was found to decrease with the increased in the H/B ratio for all combinations of parameters. The dimensionless ultimate bearing capacity was maximum for the upper loose sand friction angle of 34° and lower dense sand friction angle of 46°. The results further reveal that the dimensionless bearing capacity of the E-shaped footing was higher in comparison to the dimensionless bearing capacity of the square footing on layered sand (loose over dense). The improvement in the ultimate bearing capacity for the E-shaped footing was observed in the range of 109.35% to 152.24%, 0.44% to 7.63% and 0.63% to 18.97% corresponding to H/B ratio of 0.5, 2 and 4 respectively. The lowest percentage improvement in the dimensionless bearing capacity for the E-shaped footing on layered sand was 0.44 % at a H/B = 2 whereas the highest improvement was 152.24 % at a H/B = 0.5. Change of footing shape from square to E-shaped, the failure mechanism changes from general shear to local shear failure. Research limitations/implications: The results presented in this paper were based on the numerical study conducted on E-shaped footing made out of a square footing of size 1.5 m x 1.5 m. However, further validation of the results presented in this paper, is recommended using experimental study conducted on similar size E-shaped footing. Practical implications: The proposed numerical study can be useful for the architects designing similar types of super structures requiring similar shaped footings. Originality/value: No numerical study on E-shaped footing resting on layered sand (loose over dense) were conducted so far. Hence, an attempt was made in this article to estimate the bearing capacity of these footings.

Purpose: The paper presents an experimental and numerical study to evaluate the bearing capacity of unskirted, singly and doubly skirted irregular pentagonal footings on different sands (S1, S2, S3) at a relative density of 30 %. The skirt depth of the footing was varied from 0.0B to 1.5B (B is the width of the square footing). Design/methodology/approach: The experimental and numerical study of the singly and doubly skirted irregular pentagonal footing resting on sands was modelled in a test tank and Plaxis 3D software respectively. Findings: The results of this study reveal that the bearing capacity was higher for the skirted irregular pentagonal footings on sand S3 followed by sand S2 and S1. The lowest percentage improvement for the singly skirted footing on sand S3 was 18.51% at a Ds/B = 0.25 whereas the highest improvement was 90.81% at a Ds/B = 1.50 for the singly skirted footing on sand S2. The highest percentage improvement for the doubly skirted footing on sand S2 was 95.13% at a Ds/B = 1.5 whereas the lowest improvement was 23.70% at a Ds/B = 0.25 the doubly skirted footing on sand S3. The results further revealed that the numerically obtained bearing capacity was marginally higher in comparison to the one obtained experimentally for the footings on all sands. Further, the experimental results validated the results obtained numerically with an average deviation of 8%. The percentage improvement in the bearing capacity was higher for the irregular pentagonal footing resting on sand S2 in comparison to sand S3 and S1. The settlement response of the irregular pentagonal footings is unchanged by increasing the number of elements beyond 7700. Both the experimental and numerical studies revealed a linear elastic behaviour at Ds = 0.5B, while the experimentally obtained pressure-settlement ratio plot shows a clear failure at Ds= 1B and 1.5B.
