This experimental paper comprises the results of acoustic emission (AE), microscopic and ultrasonic measurements of samples subjected to slowly increasing compressive stress. On the basis of conducted measurements the successive stages of the material structural degradation have been recognized. The objects of study were samples made of C 120 aluminous porcelain. The investigated material has found at present the application in the fabrication of technical elements like overhead power line insulators. In the case of such objects, not only high mechanical strength, but especially elevated durability as well as operational reliability are required. The expected "life time" of net insulators during exploitation is about 40 years. The analysis of obtained mechanoacoustic dependences pointed out a complex mechanism of degradation of the material. Microscopic investigation of samples, which were stressed to different levels of load, enabled to specify the development of gradual growth of microcracks and successive crushing out of elements of the structure. These processes appear to be similar to the ageing processes occurring in the material during long period of exploitation under a working load. Three stages of the structure degradation were distinguished. The preliminary and subcritical ones show low or moderate intensity of AE signals and considerable variety for the particular samples. The critical stage directly precedes the destructtion of samples. Its range is relatively narrow and reveals the AE activity of high energy. The effectiveness of dispersive and fibrous reinforcement of modern aluminous porcelain C 120 type has been described. Structural strengthening by corundum grains and mullite needle shaped crystals improves mechanical parameters and distinguishes this material from typical aluminosilicate ceramics. The presented results enable drawing up the conclusions concerning the resistance of investigated material to the ageing degradation process development during long term operation.

The paper presents the investigation of the relation between the acoustic emission (AE) and instability of plastic deformation type Portevin-Le Chatelier (PLC) of single-phase brass CuZn30 monocrystals with crystallographical orientation [13 9]. The monocrystals have been investigated applying the method of free compression at a constant strain rate and the temperature within the range from 200°C to 400°C, simultaneously recording PLC phenomenon by means of acoustic emission. During hot axial compression tests the correlation between work-hardening curves σ - ε, which display PLC effect and characteristic of acoustic emission signals has been found. Moreover, it was proved that in the range of the PLC effect, the acoustic signal is an impulse a character of cyclic repeatability, distinctly correlated qualitatively with the stress oscillations on the curves σ - ε. The analysis of the obtained results leads to the conclusion that in the tested monocrystals the effect PLC is probably controlled by complex processes similar to the phenomenon of dynamic strain ageing (DSA), which are described by diffusion models.
Streszczenie W pracy badano zależność między emisją akustyczną (EA), a niestabilnością odkształcenia plastycznego typu Portevin Le Chatelier monokryształów jednofazowego mosiądzu CuZn30 o orientacji krystalograficznej [13 9]. Monokryształy poddano próbie swobodnego ściskania przy stałej prędkości odkształcenia w zakresie temperatury od 200°C do 400°C stosując jednocześnie pomiar emisji akustycznej. Określono zależność pomiędzy przebiegiem krzywych umocnienia σ - ε wykazujących efekt PLC. a charakterystyką sygnałów emisji akustycznej generowanych w badanej próbie ściskania jednoosiowego. Stwierdzono, że w zakresie występowania efektu PLC podczas próby ściskania, sygnał EA ma charakter impulsu cyklicznego, wyraźnie skorelowany jakościowo z oscylacjami naprężeń na krzywych σ - ε. Analiza uzyskanych wyników pozwala przypuszczać, że w badanych monokryształach efekt PLC jest kontrolowany prawdopodobnie przez złożone procesy podobne do zjawisk starzenia dynamicznego po zgniocie (DSA), które są opisane modelami dyfuzyjnymi.

The subject of this study was investigation of the factors that have a decisive influence on the resistance of siliceous porcelain to degradation processes. There was tested material C 110 type, which is widely used for the production of low-voltage (LV) elements such as insulators and bushings. On the basis of mechanical-acoustic and microscopic research of small-sized samples, which were subjected to compression, there were distinguished successive stages of degradation of the material structure. In the authors* opinion, they have a reference to the ageing process, taking place during many years of work under operating conditions. Thus, it was possible to assess the structural factors that determine the durability and reliability of LV electroinsulating elements. The results were related to electrical aluminous porcelains.

The paper presents mechanoacoustic and microscopic testing of degradation processes of modern C 120 electrotechnical porcelain of domestic medium voltage line insulator. Samples of small dimensions, cut off from the rod of insulator, were subjected to compressive loading, with recording of acoustic emission descriptors. Microscopic analysis enabled determining the advancement of degradation effects. Three stages of the structure degradation were distinguished. The effectiveness of dispersive and fibrous reinforcement of modern aluminous porcelain C 120 type has been described. Structural strengthening by corundum grains and mullite needle shaped crystals improves mechanical parameters and distinguishes this material from typical aluminosilicate ceramics. The presented results enable drawing up the conclusions concerning the resistance of investigated material to the ageing degradation process development during long term operation.
W pracy przedstawiono mechanoakustyczne i mikroskopowe badania procesów degradacji w nowoczesnym tworzywie porcelanowym rodzaju C 120 liniowego izolatora SN. Małogabarytowe próbki, wycięte z pnia izolatora, były quasi-statycznie ściskane z jednoczesną rejestracją deskryptorów emisji akustycznej. Badania mikroskopowe ściskanych próbek wykorzystano do opisu mechanizmu degradacji tworzywa. Wyróżniono trzy kolejne etapy degradacji struktury tworzywa. Stwierdzono wysoką krótko- i długotrwałą odporność materiału izolatora w porównaniu do typowych tworzyw rodzaju C 120. Jest to wynikiem skutecznego dyspersyjnego i włóknistego wzmocnienia struktury czerepu badanej porcelany

The paper presents the evaluation of the mullite hypothesis explaining the strength of porcelains. There was researched the influence of the mullite phase on the short- and long-term mechanical strength of electrotechnical porcelain of different types (C 110, C 112, C 120 and C 130). The total mullite phase content, the size and distribution of precipitates and dispersed single crystals in the glassy matrix were considered. Mechanoacoustic and microscopic techniques as well as ultrasonic testing were used during the investigation. The role of the mullite phase in the increase of strength and resistance to aging processes of electrical porcelain of various types was described. Mullite hypothesis is valid in reference to siliceous (C 110), cristobalite (C 112) and aluminous C 120 type materials of a typical raw components content and phase composition. In the case of modern strengthened C 120 and C 130 type aluminous materials advantageous are only dispersed fine mullite needles. The precipitates of mullite phase, especially of bigger size, are undesirable.
W pracy przedstawiono ocenę teorii mulitowej wzmocnienia porcelany, w odniesieniu do tworzyw elektrotechnicznych. Przedmiotem badań był wpływ fazy mulitowej na krótko- i długotrwałą wytrzymałość mechaniczną elektroporoelan rodzaju C 110, C 112, C 120 oraz C 130. Rozpatrywana była sumaryczna zawartość fazy mulitowej. wielkość i rozłożenie jej wydzieleń oraz niezaglomeryzowanych kryształów w osnowie szklistej. W badaniach wykorzystano metodę mechanoakustyczną, techniki mikroskopowe (MO i SEM) oraz metodę ultradźwiękową. Przedstawiono rolę fazy mulitowej w podwyższeniu odporności na procesy starzeniowe porcelany elektrotechnicznej różnego rodzaju. Stwierdzono słuszność teorii mulitowej w przypadku tworzyw kwarcowych (C 110), krystobalitowych (C 112) oraz wysokoglinowych rodzaju C 120 o typowym - tradycyjnym składzie surowcowym i fazowym. W zastosowaniu do nowoczesnych, wzmocnionych tworzyw wysokoglinowych rodzaju C 120 oraz porcelan rodzaju C 130 korzystnie działają rozproszone w osnowie, niezaglomeryzowane igłowe kryształy mulitu. Wydzielenia mulitu, zwłaszcza o większych rozmiarach, są niepożądane.

The paper deals with the problems related to the diagnostics of selected parts of modern Diesel engines. The evolution of mechanical properties of four alloys of Mg-Li-Al system and four composites made on the base of the alloys mentioned above, caused by variation of its composition was presented. The Acoustic Emission (AE) method applied to monitoring of degradation of mechanical properties of the alloys and composites was described. Moreover, the results of the investigation of failures occurring in the injectors of Common Rail Diesel engines performed with the application of AE method were also reported.

The results of the investigation of both mechanical and acoustic emission (AE) behaviors of Mg4Li5Al and Mg4Li4Zn alloys subjected to compression and tensile tests at room temperature are compared with the test results obtained using the same alloys and loading scheme but at elevated temperatures. The main aim of the paper is to investigate, to determine and to explain the relation between plastic flow instabilities and the fracture characteristics. There are discussed the possible influence of the factors related with enhanced internal stresses such as: segregation of precipitates along grain boundaries, interaction of solute atoms with mobile dislocations (Cottrell atmospheres) as well as dislocation pile-ups which may lead to the microcracks formation due to the creation of very high stress concentration at grain boundaries. The results show that the plastic flow discontinuities are related to the Portevin-Le Châtelier phenomenon (PL effect) and they are correlated with the generation of characteristic AE pulse trains. The fractography of broken samples was analyzed on the basis of light (optical), TEM and SEM images.

With the use of Weibull distribution, with prior regression and correlation analysis, the chosen parameters, that define durability and break down level of two populations of AlSi17Cu5Mg, were set. The calculation sheet that is shown for reliability allows the creation of so called survival chart, and on the basis of durability data the average warrantee time can be defined at the pre-exploitation stage.

In the past peasant families did not regard health as a value in itself. The low ‘cultural status' of health was associated with the constant threat to it, the frailty of life and poverty which, as peasant diarist wrote, ‘did not let one live’. ‘Plague, war, and famine’ would decimate the village population for centuries, and these people were help-less in the face of epidemic and natural disasters. For that reason death was treated as familiar part of the trajectory of human life, natural and indisputable.A feature of folk culture, which influences behaviors in and attitudes towards illness among the peasant population, is co-occurrence mystical-magical elements. Mystical-magical acts influenced and still influence patterns of behaviors in illness and dying process which a peasant family exhibits. For example, illness was assumed to be caused by spells, charms and magic; and the use of holy relics, amulets or talismans was believed to prevent illness. People were convinced that revelation, inspiration or clairvoyance made it easier to diagnose an illness whereas casting spells, charms, and the like would remove it effectively.In our article we will discuss typical ways of coping with illness and dying processes’, the determinants of behaviors in illness, emphasizing customs associated with illness, behavioral patterns, ways of expressing emotions, and fatalism as attitude towards illness and death. We will stress the importance of cultural and religious elements, and accentuate the special role played by women in coping with illness by using self-treatment and folk healing methods.

In the paper the reasons for steam pipeline’s elbow material rupture, made of steel 13CrMo4-5 (15HM) that is being used in the energetics. Based on the mechanical properties in the ambient temperature (Rm, Rp0,2 and elongation A5) and in the increased temperature (Rp0,2t) it was found, that the pipeline elbow’s material sampled from the ruptured area has lower Rp0,2t by around 2% than it is a requirement for 13CrMo4-5 steel in it’s base state. The damage appeared as a result of complex stress state, that substantially exceeded the admissible tensions, what was the consequence of considerable structure degradation level. As a result of the microstructure tests on HITACHI S4200 microscope, the considerable development of the creeping process associates were found. Also the advances progress of the microstructure degradation was observed, which is substantial decomposition of bainite and multiple, with varied secretion size, and in most cases forming the micro cracks chains. With the use of lateral micro sections the creeping voids were observed, that creates at some places the shrinkage porosities clusters and micro pores.

Introduction: The phenomenon of death has always accompanied the humanity. Formerly, it was familiarised, interspersed in human life, natural and unquestionable. Currently, it is treated as ‘taboo’, controlled medically and pushed to the limits of capability, though inevitable. From socio-medical point of view death is a multidimensional phenomenon encompassing a range of social situations which accompany the process of dying. However, passing away itself is not the main interest for sociology but the gradual ‘process of dying’ with timeframe set by the diagnosis and death. Purpose: To present the range and specificity of thanatological issues which have occurred in classical Polish sociology of medicine. Material and methods: The study is theoretical and has been compiled on the basis of the selected literature on the topic from the period between 1960 and 2013. Results: The issues of death and dying have always been present in Polish sociology of medicine. It first appeared in western and Polish socio-medical literature in the seventies of the twentieth century. The main topics of social analysis refer to communication and interaction between the environment and the moribund as well as institutionalisation of death and dying, social attitudes towards death and all the problems that the close and relatives of a dying person struggle with. Conclusion: The role of critical sociology is also worth mentioning because it challenges inadequacy of hospitals as bureaucratic institutions to situational requirements of the process of dying.

The aim of this dissertation is to identify the scope of convergence of sociology and psychology with special attention to the areas which are especially essential in the analysis of phenomena connected with human health and disease. World Health Organization has defined health as bio-psycho-sociological wellbeing and thus has pointed out three areas which are indispensable in maintaining homeostasis of health (biological, mental and social area), and indicated three disciplines whose mutual cooperation is essential for building up complete knowledge of health and its determinants. Medicine, psychology and sociology are the fields of knowledge whose cooperation is essential to support individual and social health. Regardless of the distinct fields of research that sociology and psychology cover, it is relatively easy to find within them some common scope of interest relating to health. The most important area of expected cooperation is the problem of psychosocial stress. Another identified areas of cooperation for sociology and psychology are social support and its influence on health, the issue of doctor-patient interaction and its psychotherapeutic effect as well as psychosocial determinants of health and disease. Research cooperation between sociology and psychology in the above mentioned areas can contribute to its in-depth exploration which may result in practical implementation of acquired knowledge in the areas of health and disease.

Opis:
One of the many research passions of Magdalena Sokołowska, regarded as the founder of Polish and cofounder of European medical sociology, was sociothanatological problems in the broad sense. Magdalena Sokołowska’s version of “socio-thanatology” presented at the end of the nineteen-seventies and the early eighties consisted first of all in sociodemographic considerations. The deontological and ethical-moral problems, as well as individual existential experiences associated with the process of dying, being disregarded during the period in question, appeared in M. Sokołowska’s research conceptions and papers in the nineteen-eighties. She was particularly concerned with the patterns of dying in medical institutions, conceptions of dying trajectories, processes of “waiting for death”, mechanisms of the institutionalization, commercialization and medicalization of dying, differences between the conditions and context of dying at home and in the hospital, consequences of “slow dying” for the range of social roles performed by the doctor and the nurse, the scope and character of changes in the function and structure of the family in the course of the process of dying and as a result of the death of one of its members, analysis of social behaviors after death in the institutional and noninstitutional context (hospital, hospice, home), etc. The analysis of Magdalena Sokołowska’s “socio-thanatological” achievements allows us to notice a clear evolution of her conception: from the “epidemiological-demographic” approach, oriented towards analysis of mortality, to a preference for “qualitative” interpretations based on the investigation of “subjective emotions” that accompany dying persons.

Opis:
In the present work the following results of tribological measurements are presented: changes of the friction coefficient, instantaneous values of friction force Ft, topography of worn surfaces (SEM) and detected vibroacoustic and acoustic emission signals. The measurements were performed on flat Si substrates covered with thin films of Cr and Au with thickness of 1 and 2 žm, respectively. Two types of tribological tests were done: one with a single-pass sliding of the ceramic ball with 0.5 mm in diameter and at sliding speed of vs1=0.025 mm/s, and the other one with a cyclic reciprocating motion of the ball at vs2=0.21 mm/s. Registration of the vibroacoustic and acoustic emission signals was in the 60 s periods in the same way for all tests. On the basis of our study one can conclude that the set-up used allowed us to detect and register vibroacoustic and acoustic emission signals related to microfriction. Various kinds of abrasive wear were determinated.
W pracy przedstawione zostały wyniki badań tribologicznych: zmiany współczynnika tarcia ž oraz chwilowe wartości siły tarcia Ft, topografia śladów zużycia (SEM) i otrzymane sygnały wibroakustyczne i EA. Do pomiarów użyte zostały płaskie próbki z cienkimi warstwami chromu, o grubości 1 žm i złota, o grubości 2žm naniesione na podłoże z płytki Si. Pomiary tarciowe wykonane zostały w dwóch rodzajach testów: z pojedynczym przesuwem kulki (przeciwpróbki) ceramicznej o średnicy 0.5mm z prędkością poślizgu vs1=0.025 mm/s oraz cykliczne, kulka przemieszczała się wielokrotnie ruchem postępowo-zwrotnym z prędkością poślizgu vs2=0.21mm/s. Rejestracja sygnałów wibroakustycznych i EA odbywała się w określonych, jednakowych dla wszystkich testów 60-cio sekundowych odcinkach czasu, na początku, podczas i na koniec testu. Na podstawie przeprowadzonych badań można przyjąć, że w zaproponowanym stanowisku pomiarowym możliwa jest detekcja i rejestracja sygnałów wibroakustycznych i emisji akustycznej związanej z mikrotarciem. Określone zostały różne rodzaje zużycia abrazyjnego.
