Opis:
The article presents the results of Matlab simulations and experimental studies of non-contact influence of ultrasonic wave on laser beam. A role of the air-gap and the influence of the air-gap on laser-ultrasonic transmission in optical fiber were examined. Two optical fibers were used with air-gap between them. One fiber was attached to a laser diode and positioned to pass through a hole in a sandwich type transducer and in a velocity transformer. In the velocity transformer (at its end), after leaving small air-gap, to the end of the transformer, the other optical fiber is attached. The second fiber can interact with a given biological structure.

Opis:
Glass optical fibres are a promising medium for simultaneous laser-ultrasonic applications. The proposed application system is based on simultaneous transmission of laser radiation and ultrasounds in a flexible silica glass fibre. The optical fibre's core was made of $SiO_2$ (97%) and $GeO_2$ (3%) and the cladding was 100% $SiO_2$. The material the optical fibre is made of enables simultaneous transmission of laser radiation and ultrasonic wave. Experiments were performed using a Mach-Zehnder optical waveguide interferometer with single-mode optical fibre coupler. This paper presents measurement results for delivering ultrasonic waves to the optical fibre using longitudinal vibrations generated by a sandwich ultrasonic transducer with a velocity transformer. The study presents the relations concerning simultaneous operation of both types of waves and the possibilities of transmission of low frequency, high power ultrasonic wave in optical fibres using a sandwich type transducer.

simultaneous transmission of optical and acoustic
Opis:
This article presents the results of experimental studies of simultaneous transmission of ultrasonic waves and laser signals in optical fibers by the use of both the optical single mode and multimode fiber couplers. This work was aimed, among other things, at the study of the way the acoustic energy affects a laser beam. The light wave was guided into one of the coupler’s arms. The optical power applied to one input of the coupler is separated into two coupler outputs according to the rate determined by the coupling coefficient. Only an ultrasonic wave generated by a sandwich type transducer is applied to the other arm of the coupler. In this experiment, as in case of the light wave, the acoustic power is separated into both the outputs. One can observe the interaction of both the waves on the two outputs – a modulation of the light wave by means of the ultrasonic wave is possible. The output signal was detected using a PIN diode and an optical power meter (OPM). Temporary courses were observed on an oscilloscope screen. The simultaneous transmission of ultrasounds and optical radiation in optical fibers can be used in the construction of medical equipmen.

Accuracy of the box-counting algorithm for numerical computation of the fractal exponents is investigated. To this end several sample mathematical fractal sets are analyzed. It is shown that the standard deviation obtained for the fit of the fractal scaling in the log-log plot strongly underestimates the actual error. The real computational error was found to have power scaling with respect to the number of data points in the sample $(n_{tot})$. For fractals embedded in two-dimensional space the error is larger than for those embedded in one-dimensional space. For fractal functions the error is even larger. Obtained formula can give more realistic estimates for the computed generalized fractal exponents' accuracy.

Opis:
Introduction. Insulin resistance is becoming an increasingly widespread problem worldwide. For its determination indirect indices of insulin resistance or insulin sensitivity have used. Those indices based on simultaneous measurements of blood glucose and insulin concentrations under fasting conditions or during the Oral Glucose Tolerance Test. Objective. The aim of the study was to estimate reliable reference values for the indices used in insulin resistance diagnosis. Materials and method. 191 selected participants, aged 18–31, were enrolled into the reference population. 130 participants from the reference population with fasting glucose ≤5.5 mmol/L, BMI<25 kg/m2, and without metabolic syndrome, were finally included in the reference group. The following insulin resistance indices were calculated: HOMA1-IR, HOMA2, HOMA2 from C-peptide, QUICKI, Matsuda Index and Insulin Secretion-Sensitive Index-2. Determination of reference intervals for indirect indices of insulin resistance was conducted in accordance with the C28-A3 procedure recommended by the Clinical & Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI). Results. The reference intervals for indirect insulin resistance indices examined according to CLSI protocol were: ≤4.00, ≤2.27, ≤4.10, ≥0.31 for HOMA1-IR, HOMA2, HOMA2 C-pep., and QUICKI, respectively. For insulin sensitivity, the value of the Matsuda Index was established as ≥3.19 and for beta cell pancreatic function ISSI-2 as ≥206. Conclusions. Establishing a reference intervals for these indices enable the proper identification and differentiation of the types of insulin resistance in particular populations. The early detection of metabolic disorders allows for introduction of effective preventive action.

The atomic structure of as-prepared $Fe_{61}Co_{(14-x)}Zr_{5}W_{x}B_{20}$ (x=1, 2 and 4) ribbon samples and their thermal stability were investigated by in-situ high-energy X-ray diffraction experiments. It was observed that higher W concentration causes the tiny shift of the main peak of the reduced atomic pair distribution function to higher values of interatomic distances and increases the coefficient of volume thermal expansion. The crystallization process occurs in two steps and is qualitatively the same for all studied specimens. Firstly the $Fe_{23}B_{6}$ phase is created and later is transformed to other types of borides together with the creation of a Fe-based phase.

The Jagiellonian positron emission tomograph project carried out in the Institute of Physics of the Jagiellonian University is focused on construction and tests of the first prototype of PET scanner for medical diagnostic which allows for the simultaneous 3D imaging of the whole human body using organic scintillators. The J-PET prototype consists of 192 scintillator strips forming three cylindrical layers which are optimized for the detection of photons from the electron-positron annihilation with high time-and high angular resolutions. In this article we present time calibration and synchronization of the whole J-PET detection system by irradiating each single detection module with a ²²Na source and a small detector providing common reference time for synchronization of all the modules.

Opis:
A method for creating linearly polarized positrons and ortho-positronium (o-Ps) atoms with the J-PET detector is presented. The unique geometry and properties of the J-PET tomography enable one to design a positron source such that the quantization axis for the estimation of the linear polarization of produced o-Ps can be determined on the event by event basis in a direction of the positron motion. We intend to use ²²Na or other β⁺ decay isotopes as a source of polarized positrons. Due to the parity violation in the beta decay, the emitted positrons are longitudinally polarized. The choice of the quantization axis is based on the known position of the positron emitter and the reconstructed position of the positronium annihilation. We show that the J-PET tomography is equipped with all needed components.

Opis:
Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy has shown to be a powerful tool to study the nanostructures of porous materials. Positron emission tomograph is a device allowing imaging of metabolic processes e.g. in human bodies. A newly developed device, the Jagiellonian PET will allow positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy in addition to imaging, thus combining both analyses providing new methods for physics and medicine. In this contribution we present a computer program that is compatible with the Jagiellonian PET software. We compare its performance with the standard program LT 9.0 by using positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy data from hexane measurements at different temperatures. Our program is based on an iterative procedure, and our fits prove that it performs as good as LT 9.0.
