Opis:
Business processes are omnipresent in nowadays economy: companies operate repetitively to achieve their goals, e.g., deliver goods, complete orders. The business process model is the key to understanding, managing, controlling, and verifying the operations of a company. Modeling of business processes may be a legal requirement in some market segments, e.g., financial in the European Union, and a prerequisite for certification, e.g., of the ISO-9001 standard. However, business processes naturally evolve, and continuous model adaptation is essential for rapid spot and reaction to changes in the process. The main contribution of this work is the Continuous Inductive Miner (CIM) algorithm that discovers and continuously adapts the process tree, an established representation of the process model, using the batches of event logs of the business process. CIM joins the exclusive guarantees of its two batch predecessors, the Inductive Miner (IM) and the Inductive Miner – directlyfollows-based (IMd): perfectly fit and sound models, and single-pass event log processing, respectively. CIM offers much shorter computation times in the update scenario than IM and IMd. CIM employs statistical information to work around the need to remember event logs as IM does while ensuring the perfect fit, contrary to IMd.

Opis:
Disturbances of hemostatic system are commonly observed in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. Along with CKD progression, the levels of tryptophan-derived uremic toxins increase, including quinolinic acid (QA). Objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of QA, a representative of tryptophan metabolites, on coagulation and fibrinolytic activity in male Wistar rats in vivo and platelet activity in vitro. Rats received QA dissolved in drinking water in doses of 3, 10, and 30 mg/kg (or water, VEH) for 14 days. Next, the following parameters were measured in the rat‘s whole blood or plasma ex vivo: thromboelastometric (ROTEM) parameters, standard coagulation parameters and fibrinolytic parameters. To evaluate the direct effect of QA on coagulation and platelet activity, blood from control rats was drawn and analyzed in vitro in the following scheme: samples of whole blood were incubated with QA (100µM) before thromboelastometric (ROTEM) analysis and collagen-induced platelet aggregation, or samples of platelet rich plasma (PRP) were incubated with QA (100µM, 1 and 2mM) 10 minutes before collagen (1µg/ml) or ADP (10µM)-induced platelet aggregation. QA administrated for 14 days in drinking water had no effect per se on activation of coagulation and fibrinolytic parameters in rats ex vivo. Similarly, no changes were observed in a whole blood incubated directly with QA regarding coagulation parameters or collagen-induced platelet aggregation. QA inhibited ADP-induced platelets aggregation in PRP only at higher concentrations of 1 and 2 mM and when aggregation was initiated by the addition of 10µM ADP in vitro.

Opis:
The purpose of this article is to evaluate the role of a Traditional Neighborhood Design (TND), one of New Urbanist principles, in the regeneration of post-industrial city centers. Its structure is the following. First, the contemporary elements of the TND are identified. Then, their actual versus declared use in strategies aimed at the renewal of major post-industrial sites is analyzed. Finally, the elements’ ability to improve the spatial quality of an urban area is assessed. The above purpose is achieved by analyzing the application of the New Urbanist planning tools by two urban regeneration projects at different levels of completion. The sites of the projects are the central areas of the French metropolis of Lyon and of the Polish city of Lodz.
Celem autorów artykułu jest ocena roli tradycyjnego modelu urbanizacyjnego (eng. Traditional Neighborhood Design TND), jednej z zasad Nowego Urbanizmu, w regeneracji postindustrialnych centrów miast.

Opis:
This paper investigated the impact of the exhaust gas recirculation on the concentration of selected harmful chemical compounds from the AVL 5402 research diesel engine powered with diesel fuel (DF) and compressed natural gas (CNG). The engine was operated in the dual fuel mode. It means that the engine was conventionally fuelled by regular diesel fuel and simultaneously by CNG dosed into the inlet pipe. The necessary tests were carried out for the mixtures containing 30, 50 and 70% of CNG (by energy content) in the total chemical energy delivered together with diesel fuel (DF) into the combustion chamber. The research was conducted for the stationary conditions of the engine operation at 1200 rpm and constant 1004 Joules of a fuel chemical energy delivered in each cycle into the combustion chamber. Under such conditions, the impact of the EGR rate changed in range of 0–50% on the emissions of selected unburned hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx) as well as particulate matter (PM), was evaluated. The obtained results confirmed that the EGR system is effective in the reduction of the NOx formation for all tested fuel mixtures. Nevertheless, it was found that the addition of CNG combusted in the diesel engine generates more harmful pollutants in comparison with diesel fuel. However, in some cases the concentration of NOx as well as PM was comparable or lower. It suggests that the combustion of CNG in diesels allows achieving environmental benefits. In this case, further optimization of the engine fuel supply system is necessary.

Opis:
Aim: The Grainyhead-like 1 (GRHL1) transcription factor is tissue-specific and is very highly expressed in the kidney. In humans the GRHL1 gene is located at the chromosomal position 2p25. A locus conferring increased susceptibility to essential hypertension has been mapped to 2p25 in two independent studies, but the causative gene has never been identified. Furthermore, a statistically significant association has been found between a polymorphism in the GRHL1 gene and heart rate regulation. The aim of our study was to investigate the physiological consequences of Grhl1 loss in a mouse model and ascertain whether Grhl1 may be involved in the regulation of blood pressure and heart rate. Experimental approach: In our research we employed the Grhl1 "knock-out" mouse strain. We analyzed renal gene expression, blood pressure and heart rate in the Grhl1-null mice in comparison with their "wild-type" littermate controls. Most important results: The expression of many genes is altered in the Grhl1-/- kidneys. Some of these genes have previously been linked to blood pressure regulation. Despite this, the Grhl1-null mice have normal blood pressure and interestingly, increased heart rate. Conclusions: Our work did not discover any new evidence to suggest any involvement of Grhl1 in blood pressure regulation. However, we determined that the loss of Grhl1 influences the regulation of heart rate in a mouse model.

Opis:
Chitosan and its derivatives are renewable biopolymers characterized by high biocompatibility; therefore, they are harmless to humans and allow immune tolerance and improved hydrophilicity. Moreover, chitosan has been the most studied of all polysaccharides used in biomedical applications during the last decade. Combinations of chitosan and porphyrinoid compounds in hybrid materials have revealed many potential applications for biomedical sciences. The main advantage of such materials is an increase in the solubility of porphyrinoids in body fluids and therefore greater release of singlet oxygen to the treated tissue. Chitosan-based drug delivery systems can improve the targeting of porphyrinoids and their release at predetermined locations and finally achieve desired therapeutic effects with minimal side effects. Hence, porphyrinoid-chitosan materials can be applied in drug delivery systems, cancer theranostics and magnetic resonance imaging. The combination of chitosan and porphyrinoids also appears useful in the healing and repairing of damaged organs, tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, as well as dressing materials. Huge benefits are related to the treatment of wounds, which has been presented for self-healing hydrogels based on chitosan and porphyrinoids. Furthermore, the chitosan/porphyrinoid combinations have revealed enormous benefits for antimicrobial photodynamic therapy.

Opis:
ObjectivesThe main aim of this work is to assess the level of knowledge about diabetes prevention and the consequences of untreated diabetes in the Polish society, as well as to indicate the variables that have a significant impact on that knowledge.Material and MethodsThe analysis is based on the results of the National Multicenter Health Survey – WOBASZ II. The number of subjects surveyed was 6170, including 2760 men and 3410 women, aged 20–74 years. Data on socio-demographic variables, lifestyle and subjective health assessment were collected using the face-to-face technique.ResultsThe results obtained in the WOBASZ II project showed that >85% of the respondents had an unsatisfactory level of knowledge about diabetes prevention methods and approximately to 85% of the respondents – about the consequences of untreated diabetes. Moreover, one-fourth of the respondents were unable to identify a single way of preventing diabetes, and more than one-third could not identify a single disease caused by diabetes. The risk of a lack of knowledge about diabetes prevention and the consequences of untreated diabetes is more common for men, people with a low level of education, not married, non-diabetic, and without diagnosed diabetes in the family.ConclusionsThe presented results indicate that there is an prevailing lack of knowledge about diabetes prevention and the consequences of untreated diabetes in the Polish society. It is associated with several variables like: sex, level of education, age, marital status, subjective health assessment and diabetes diagnosed in the respondent and/or in the respondent’s family.
