Opis:
In an increasing number of modern tools and devices, small graphical symbols appear simultaneously in sets as parts of the human-machine interfaces. The presence of each symbol can influence the other’s recognis ability and correct association to its intended referents. Thus, aside from correct associations, it is equally important to perform certain error analysis of the wrong answers, misses, confusions, and even lack of answers. This research aimed to show how such error analyses could be valuable in evaluating graphical symbols especially across potentially different user groups. The study tested 3 sets of icons representing 7 videophone functions. The methods involved parameters such as hits, confusions, missing values, and misses. The association tests showed similar hit rates of most symbols across the majority of the participant groups. However, exploring the error patterns helped detect differences in the graphical symbols’ performances between participant groups, which otherwise seemed to have similar levels of recognition. These are very valuable not only in determining the symbols to be retained, replaced, or re-designed, but also in formulating instructions and other aids in learning to use new products faster and more satisfactorily.

Introduction: Polygonum multiflorum Thunb. is a herbal common plant in Asia, with many beneficial health effects for human because it contains many bioactive compounds which can prevent some diseases, for instance such as cardiovascular diseases, cancers, neurodegenerative diseases, etc. Objective: The purpose of this research is to point out the effects of extraction factors such as type of solvent, material/solvent ratio (w/v), solvent concentration (%, v/v), temperature (°C) and extraction time on the extraction yield of phenolic compounds from Polygonum multiflorum Thunb. roots, for instance, total polyphenol content (TPC) and antioxidant capacity (AC). Methods: The raw material consisting of Polygonum multiflorum Thunb root was extracted by the reflux maceration method. TPC and AC of received extract were evaluated by the Folin-Ciocalteu technique and DPPH method with Trolox as a standard agent. Results: The optimal conditions for the extraction process were acetone-water mixture (60%, v/v) as a solvent, material/solvent ratio of 1/40, extraction temperature of 50°C and extraction time of 90 minutes. The surface structure of material after extraction process changed insignificantly compared with the initial structure. Conclusion: The results showed that TPC and AC obtained the best values (38.60±0.56 mg GAE/g DW (dry weight) and 298.15±2.99 µmol TE/g DW, respectively) at optimal extraction conditions. In addition, some phenolic compounds were detected in the extract such as gallic acid, catechin and resveratrol.

Opis:
The Pontryagin Maximum Principle and high-order open-mapping theorems generalize elementary first-derivative tests to nonlinear optimal control. They provide necessary conditions for a trajectory-control-pair to be optimal, or sufficient conditions for local controllability. Sufficient conditions for optimality (and necessary conditions for nonlinear controllability) are harder to obtain. Like the Legendre-Clebsch condition, they generally take the form of tests for definiteness of second order derivatives. Recently, Agrachev introduced an attractive alternative by developing a notion of curvature of optimal control that generalizes classical Gauss (and Ricci) curvatures. This theory naturally applies to systems whose controls take values on a circle or sphere. In this article we present initial studies of how this notion of curvature provides insight into the limiting case when the circles become degenerate ellipses in the form of closed intervals. Of particular interest are well studied accessible, but uncontrollable, nonlinear systems, and systems that exhibit conjugate points, in which the control takes values in a closed interval u = (u1, u2) ∈ [-1,1] x {0} ⊆ R². We focus on systems that are well-known models for the analysis of small-time local controllability and time-optimal control.

We describe a successful implementation of a theorem prover for modal logic S4 that runs on a Java smart card with only 512 KBytes of RAM and 32 KBytes of EEPROM. Since proof search in S4 can lead to infinite branches, this is "proof of principle" that non-trivial modal deduction is feasible even on current Java cards. We hope to use this prover as the basis of an on-board security manager for restricting the flow of "secrets" between multiple applets residing on the same card, although much work needs to be done to design the appropriate modal logics of "permission" and "obligations". Such security concerns are the major impediments to the commercial deployment of multi-application smart cards.

Recent global developments have heightened the need to choose the best sustainable manufacturing methods in order to mitigate the effects of industrial processes on the environment. Energy consumption is seen as one of the key performance indices for assessment of the environmental credentials of an enterprise. It is through energy consumption that the carbon emission penalty (amount of carbon emitted in generating the energy) can be estimated. Machining remains one of the key discrete-parts manufacturing processes and its mechanics has received considerable attention in research and development. However, energy analysis for machining processes is a relatively new area. In this paper the environmental impacts of machine utilisation are assessed through energy consumption. The paper considers the energy requirements in machining of a number of alloys according to recommended cutting conditions. The energy is accessed through electrical power requirements of the machining process. The results illustrate the impact that high speed machining could have on energy consumption and hence a more sustainable machining industry.

Introduction: Ginger (Zingiber officinale Rosc.) is a common spice and precious herbal plant in Vietnam. It contains many bioactive compounds, especially phenolic compounds useful for human health. Hence, the extraction and application of these compounds in medical technology are necessary. Objective: The goal of this study is to determine the optimal extraction conditions with the assistance of microwave, for instance solvent/material ratio (ml/g), solvent concentration (%, v/v) and extraction time, on the extraction yield of ginger rhizome, such as total polyphenol content (TPC) and antioxidant capacity (AC). Methods: The dried sample was extracted by microwave-assisted extraction (MAE). TPC and AC of received extract were measured by the Folin-Ciocalteu method and phenanthroline assay. The optimization process used response surface methodology (RSM) (Central composite face design, CCF) with major influencing factors including solvent concentration, solvent/material ratio and extraction time. Results: The results showed that the optimal extraction conditions were the ethanol concentration of 60%, ethanol/material ratio of 48.6/1 (ml/g), extraction time of 1 minute. Conclusion: The maximum TPC and AC peaked at 27.89±1.99 mg GAE/g dry matter and 12.24±0.04 mmol Fe/g dry matter (DM) at optimal extraction conditions. Besides, some factors strongly affected the extraction yield and interacted together.

Hybrid speciation within the genus Elymus is analyzed and discussed. The supposed hybrid origin of Elymus x mucronatus between Elymus repens and Elymus hispidus was tested. In this aim, pollen viability and AFLP variation of putative progenitors and progenies from two natural populations were studied. Pollen fertility of hybrids ranging from 0 to 91.95% (average 59.50%) indicates the occurrence of F1 hybrids and backcross hybrids. Seven EcoRI/MseI AFLP primer combinations generated a total of 477 AFLP fragments (300 polymorphic) for 48 parental and hybrid individuals. UPGMA and principal coordinates analysis of the AFLP data set show that hybrids are closer to E. hispidus than to E. repens and suggest unidirectional introgression towards E. hispidus. AFLP fragments of the hybrid taxon were additively inherited from the parental species and no hybrid-specific bands were identified. AFLP analysis validates the hybrid status of E. ×mucronatus. Populations in which E. repens, E. hispidus and their hybrids co-occur still progress from early hybridization stages of F1 hybrids to an advanced hybridization stage of a well-established hybrid swarm. E. ×mucronatus is potentially self-sustaining by predominant vegetative reproduction by rhizomes and partial fertility leading to the development of mature seeds. We propose to consider Elymus ×mucronatus as a new species of hybrid origin in the Polish flora.

Purpose: This experiment aims to determine the influence of pouring temperature on the hardness, impact energy, tensile strength, and changes in the microstructure of the Al-5.9Cu- 1.9Mg alloy. Design/methodology/approach: A total of three samples of aluminium alloy were heated to 688, 738, and 788°C, and poured into permanent moulds in form of plates at a constant temperature of 220°C. The cast products are machined according to testing standards for hardness, impact tests, and tensile strength. Findings: The results showed that the metal hardness and impact energy increased to 103 BHN and 7.48 J at 788°C, respectively, while the tensile strength rises as the temperatures decreases. Furthermore, the changes in the microstructure were affected, which indicated that all the properties of the aluminium alloy were influenced by the variations in temperature. Research limitations/implications: During the metal casting process, only three different pouring temperatures affected the properties of the metal alloy, therefore, there is a need for more variations. Practical implications: The proposed pouring temperature parameter is an important condition for industrial foundry applications to obtain the right product for use in a machining element. Originality/value: This research shows the influence of the difference in pouring temperatures on the properties of metal alloys due to casting, where they will be adapted for a particular use.

Hot tearing severity was evaluated in this experiment by introducing a new apparatus called Constrained Rod Casting Modified Horizontal (CRCM-Horizontal). Six constraint bars with different lengths can produce hot tearing on the cast sample. Mold position was modified from vertical to horizontal and the shape was changed from a harp shape to a star shape, which allows for the liquid metal to feed into each rod cavity simultaneously. Hot tearing development was recorded along the bars by a digital camera. A new Hot Tearing Susceptibility ( HTS) formula was developed for quantitative investigation of hot tearing on a cast sample. The parameters of the HTS formula are bar length of cast sample (Li), tear severity (Ci) and location of hot tear (Pi). Footprint charts and hot tear scales are used to illustrate hot tearing severity. The experiment was conducted with Al-1.36Zn-1.19Si and Al-5.9Cu-1.9Mg alloys to investigate the sensibility of the apparatus and modification its operation.

Opis:
A new locality of the Chinese clam Sinanodonta woodiana (Lea, 1834) was found in a temporarily drained Czes³awicki Pond (10.8 ha) near the village of Janis³awice (Dolina Baryczy Landscape Park, Sooenie community, Ostrów Wielkopolski district, Wielkopolska region) in September 2006. In this fishpond a dense population of the Chinese clam was observed whose number was estimated as about few hundred individuals. During the second control (January 2007), we observed a few hundred clams in the same pond and we found smaller populations in adjacent ponds of the same Janis³awice complex. During a detailed control of the ponds (drained in the autumn 2006) of the fishpond complex near Konradów (120 ha, 2 km SW of the Janis³awice complex), only one damaged, empty shell of the Chinese clam was found. Specimens with maximum shell dimensions – 185 mm length and 140 mm width – were found in the Czes³awicki Pond. Before, S. woodiana was found in Poland only in heated waters which were thought to be necessary for the development of this species. This is the first Polish record of the species in a reservoir with a natural thermal regime.

Drinking fresh water, turning the lights on, travelling by tram, calling our family, or getting a medical treatment are usual activities, but the underlying SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems like CIS (Critical Infrastructure Systems), ICS (Industrial Control Systems) or DCS (Distributed Control Systems) were always the target of many types of attacks, endangered the above mentioned simple activities. During the last decades because of the fast spread of the internet based services and the continuous technical development these systems become more vulnerable than ever. Full reconstruction and innovative changes in older SCADA systems has high cost, and it is not always rewarding. Communication protocols as Modbus (1979) serve as a main basis for SCADA systems, so security of Modbus has a major impact of the security of SCADA systems. Our paper raises and answers questions about the security of the Modbus RTU protocol. We focus on the serial Modbus protocol, because in that method we found many unsolved problems, like lack of authentication of the participants, lack of secure channel and so on. The aim of this paper to propose a secure communication alternative for Modbus RTU @ RS485 wire. The main advantage of the proposed method is the coexistence with traditional slaves and bus systems and only software update is necessary.

Opis:
Montia linearis is a vascular plant originating from western North America. The expansion of this species has been observed for several decades. For the first time M. linearis was found in Europe in 1989. Further six populations were documented by 2004 within the continent: three in Poland, two in Denmark and one in Hungary. Apart from discovering a new population of M. linearis, we confirmed two out of the three previously known localities of the species in Poland. All the currently known populations of M. linearis occupied predominantly meadow habitats, especially intensively managed sites. Some individuals were also found in disturbed sites with bare soil. The studied species inhabited soils of various types with broad range of fertility as well as humidity. Montia linearis populations reached densities up to 87 individuals per 0.04 m2. The number of seeds produced by an individual was between 10 and 55 in 90% of the studied specimens, however much more fertile specimens were also observed. As the previously presented hypothesis of M. linearis dispersal with rail transport seemed not to be well supported, the connection between the M. linearis presence and cattle husbandry is considered. It is possible that the species can be transferred with living animals or manure. The species was able to survive for at least 26 years within once inhabited site. Further spread of M. linearis within Europe is highly probable. The aim of the study is to: (i) describe the current state of populations of M. linearis in Poland, (ii) provide information on habitat preferences and biology of the species, (iii) assess the invasiveness potential of M. linearis in Poland.

Opis:
In this study, total phenolic and flavonoid contents, antioxidant capacity, and phenolic compositions of Castanopsis phuthoensis and Castanopsis grandicicatricata (Fagaceae family) were investigated. It was found that bark extracts were rich of phenolic contents, whereas leaf extracts were abundant of flavonoids. The total phenolics varied from 11.20 to 35.47 mg gallic acid equivalent g-1 dry weight (DW), and the total flavonoids were from 2.24 to 12.55 mg rutin equivalent g-1 DW. The results of antioxidant activity evaluation showed that the DPPH (1,1- diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl) radical scavenging activity of the free phenolic extracts were higher than the bound phenolic extracts. Regarding the reducing power and β-carotene bleaching assays, the free phenolic extracts showed remarkably strong antioxidant capacity that were similar to the levels of the standard BHT (dibutyl hydroxytoluene) did. It could be concluded that free phenolic extracts were more effective in antioxidant activities than bound phenolic extracts. Highly significant correlations were observed between phenolic contents and antioxidant activities (0.813 for DPPH and 0.841 for reducing power). By HPLC analysis, seven phenolic acids were detected including gallic, p-hydroxybenzoic, vanillic, sinapic, p-coumaric, ellagic acids, and vanillin. Of which, gallic, ellagic, and sinapic acids were the most abundant compounds in the two species. The results suggest C. phuthoensis and C. grandicicatricata contain rich sources of natural antioxidants and phenolic compounds which are probably considered in pharmaceutical use.
