Opis:
Modern city buses are made of various construction materials and the share of material groups has changed over the decades. By replacing heavy materials for structural elements or bus components with their lighter counterparts, the kerb weight of the bus can be reduced by up to several hundred kilograms. This article presents the issues of the development of city bus design in terms of passenger space comfort and bus structure in the context of reducing the vehicle's own weight since the 1970s. The main changes in vehicle design allowing for reducing the weight of structural elements of bodies and chassis as well as the main assemblies in city buses are presented as well as research on body types in terms of aerodynamics, safety and travel comfort. It has been shown that reducing the weight of the bus does not negatively affect its load capacity and the new bus designs are equipped with safety and comfort systems, including ABS (Anti-lock Braking System), ASR (Automatic Stability Regulation), ESP (Electronic Stability Program) and air conditioning in the passenger space. Thanks to modern light construction materials, we gain the opportunity to improve safety and comfort without losing the transport capabilities developed as a result of the development of city buses over the years.

Opis:
Background: New-onset atrial fibrillation (NOAF) is one of the complications of acute myocardial infarction (AMI), and is associated with poor outcome. The aim of the study was clinical and laboratory assessment of patients with NOAF in AMI. Material and methods: This is a retrospective, single-centre study of AMI patients with NOAF, who were admitted to Clinical Centre of Cardiology of the University Clinical Centre in Gdansk, from January 2016 to June 2018. The medical history, echocardiography parameters, AMI localization and infarcted-related artery as well as laboratory parameters at the admission and at the moment of NOAF onset were taken into further analyses. Results: From 1155 consecutive AMI patients 103 (8.9%) with NOAF were enrolled into the study. A significant increase in C-reactive protein (CRP) and high-sensitive Troponine I (hsTnI) level, whereas significant decrease in potassium and hemoglobin level was observed at the moment of NOAF in comparison to admission. Conclusions: Our study suggests that markers of inflammation (CRP), myocardial necrosis (hsTnI), hemoglobin and serum potassium may be associated with NOAF in the setting on AMI. The aforementioned parameters are generally available and may be used as an inexpensive and rapid way to select patients who are at high risk of developing NOAF.

Introduction: Echocardiographic assessment of the interior vena cava (IVC) is part of the estimation of right atrial pressure. In young women values exceeding norm are observed. The aim of our study was an echocardiographic assessment of the IVC dimension depending on the phase of menstrual cycle among young, healthy women. Materials and methods: Female students of the Medical University of Gdańsk were enrolled into the study. Each patient underwent echocardiographic examination of the IVC diameter (d-IVC) and respiratory decrease in dimension in two time points, depending on the menstrual cycle phase: in the first days of menstruation (Phase M) or in the second part of menstrual cycle (Phase L). Results: 31 patients completed the study. There was a significant difference between the d-IVC in Phase M and Phase L (1.98±0.25cm vs 1.86±0.3cm; p <0.05). We did not observe correlation in terms of the inspiratory collapsibility. In the Phase M 77% patients achieved at least 50% decrease in dimension during inspiration comparing to 87% in Phase L (p=0.89). 35% patients had d-IVC exceeding reference values. Conclusion: In population of young women, the diameter of IVC exceeding reference values can be observed. IVC dimension depends on the menstrual cycle.

We predicted that short-term training of executive control would improve both cognitive control itself (Hypothesis 1) and general fluid intelligence (Hypothesis 2). We randomly assigned 120 high school students to the experimental and control groups. The former underwent a 14-day training of four executive functions: interference resolution, response inhibition, task switching, and goal monitoring. The latter did not train anything. The training significantly improved cognitive control and IQ. The control group also improved their IQ scores but gained less than the experimental one. However, the amount of IQ scores enhancement did not correlate with the majority of indices of the training effectiveness, thus justifying the supposition that such enhancement resulted from the general effect of participation in the training rather than from the improvement of executive functions underlying Gf.

The internationalization of Polish companies via equity entry modes is still a phenomenon limited in scope, especially when compared to that occurring in developed countries, however showing a clear upward trend. Within this research framework the following paper presents the results of a qualitative study devoted to the geographical patterns of foreign expansion of Polish companies. The theoretical analysis, based on the eclectic (OLI) paradigm of international production, the internationalization process model and the Strategy Tripod, is focused simultaneously on the determinants of location choice related to host country and firm characteristics. Case study results indicate that host country choice is related to the investment motives. Moreover, the role of location choice criteria depends on the host country level of development.

Opis:
Introduction: Legislation systems of most countries prohibited using the handheld mobile phone while driving due to the fact that it disturbs concentration and causes hand involvement. Every phone owner is accustomed to the ringtone of his phone and almost involuntarily endeavors to pick it up or check who calls. This engages one’s psychomotor skills, which in our opinion contributes to the attenuation of reaction time needed for performing other crucial functions. Objectives: The aim of the study was: (1) to evaluate the infl uence of the sound of a ringing mobile phone on the complex reaction time (RT) score in healthy subjects (owners), and (2) to check if there are any differences in RT when a landline phone and mobile phone ring. Methods: To assess RT we used our system and protocol of examination, previously validated. The examination conditions were standardized. All tests were performed in the same room with the same light and general acoustic conditions. The test group consisted of 23 women and 24 men, aged 19–24 years. The examination comprised 4 sessions: Training Session (TS) during which the subjects were accustomed with the application and sample stimuli, Control Session (CS) with no telephone ringing, Landline Session (LS) with landline phone ringing, Mobile Session (MS) with mobile phone ringing. Results: The median RT in the study population was signifi cantly elongated (p < 0.001) in MS. In women and in men RTs were signifi cantly longer in MS than in CS and non-signifi cantly longer than in LS. Reaction times in CS, LS and MS were longer in women, however the differences were not signifi cant (p > 0.05). Conclusions: We think that the specifi c ‘bond’ between a person and their private phone can signifi cantly disrupt their attention and thus affect the attention-demanding activities.

Opis:
All healthcare organizations process “sensitive data” that needs special protection. To ensure an appropriate level of security for this data, it is necessary to allocate adequate financial resources for security measures. The exploratory aim of the research here is the recognition of the current state of information security management systems in selected entities performing medical activities. An analysis and evaluation of these systems and the financing of information security were conducted. The methods and techniques used in the research are Computer Assisted Telephone Interviews, literature studies, and a questionnaire survey with applications for access to public information. The subjects of the research were medical entities subordinate to the local governments of three Polish voivodeships (Łódź, Świętokrzyskie and Pomeranian). The research was conducted between 2017 and 2018. Research findings show that the surveyed entities did not properly manage information security and did not allocate adequate financial resources to ensure information security. The lack of efficient information security management in medical entities may entail negative consequences in the future.
Celem poznawczym badań było rozpoznanie istniejącego stanu systemów zarządzania bezpieczeństwem informacji w podmiotach wykonujących działalność leczniczą. Przeprowadzono analizę i ocenę tych systemów oraz finansowania bezpieczeństwa informacji. Wszystkie organizacje opieki zdrowotnej przetwarzają „dane wrażliwe”, które wymagają specjalnej ochrony. W celu zapewnienia odpowiedniego poziomu bezpieczeństwa tych danych, konieczne jest przeznaczenie odpowiednich środków finansowych. W literaturze opisano wiele incydentów związanych z bezpieczeństwem informacji, które miały miejsce w organizacjach opieki zdrowotnej. W badaniach wykorzystano następujące metody i techniki: wspomagany komputerowo wywiad telefoniczny, studia literaturowe i ankietę z wnioskiem o udostępnienie informacji publicznej.

Opis:
In this paper, we present a new questionnaire for the assessment of self-control as an individual trait. We describe the process of construction of this assessment tool. We also report the results of relevant validation studies. The questionnaire has two independent versions, one based on self-reports (NAS-50) and another one based on other-reports (NAS-40). The first version consists of five subscales (10 items each), called Initiative and Persistence (IP), Proactive Control (PC), Switching and Flexibility (SF), Inhibition and Adjournment (IA), and Goal Maintenance (GM). Seven samples of participants (N = 934 altogether) took part in the validation study. The second version has not been split into subscales. Both versions obtained satisfactory indices of internal consistency, assessed with Cronbach’s alpha (for NAS- 50 total score a = .861, for the subscales a between .726 and .867; for NAS-40 a = .844). The NAS-50 and NAS-40 scores were highly correlated with other measures of self-control, including Tangney, Baumeister, and Boone’s (2004) self-control scale. They also proved to be entirely independent of general intelligence. In conclusion, both versions can be regarded reliable and valid enough, and therefore suitable for the assessment of trait self-control for research purposes.

Opis:
ObjectivesThe measurement of the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) is one of the most important methods for self-assessment of health, which makes it possible to identify irregularities in the physical, mental and social functioning. The aim of the research was to determine HRQOL using the Health Related Quality of Life Questionnaire for Children and Young People (the KIDSCREEN-52 questionnaire) – the instrument recommended by the World Health Organization – which makes it possible to distinguish groups of adolescents with a diversified subjective sense of the quality of life.Material and MethodsThe study involved a group of 871 adolescents, 411 boys and 460 girls, aged 13–16 years, residing in the Świętokrzyskie Voivodship. The method of a diagnostic survey was used in the research. The KIDSCREEN-52 questionnaire, which is an instrument for examining the HRQOL of adolescents, was employed in the study. The k-means clustering method was applied, which made it possible to establish 3 groups of adolescents with a different subjective sense of the quality of life.ResultsThree groups of adolescents with a diversified subjective sense of the quality of life (high, average, low) were identified using the KIDSCREEN-52 questionnaire. The subjective quality of life in the majority of the respondents was high, in particular in those living in rural areas. The surveyed boys with a high subjective quality of life showed a significantly higher self-esteem, acceptance and peer support than the surveyed girls.ConclusionsThe KIDSCREEN-52 questionnaire is an accurate and sensitive tool for assessing HRQOL. It allows identifying 3 groups of adolescents with a diversified subjective sense of the quality of life. It can form the basis for further diagnosis of the bio-psycho-social functioning of adolescents.

Opis:
Background: Head and neck neoplasms stand for 6% of all malignant neoplasms worldwide. Chemotherapy has limited use due to the biological properties of the tumor (in the majority of cases moderately and poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma). The fundamental molecule used in treatment is cisplatin and its derivates, that can be associated with fluorouracil. The new chemotherapeutic agents are not in common use during the treatment of head and neck malignancies. However, the use of low molecular weight complexes Pd (II) carries the potential of being more effective in therapy. Material and Methods: Fifty-one patients, 30 men and 21 women (aged 52.9 ± 12.1 years) with head and neck cancer were included in the study. Fifty-one healthy subjects, 31 men and 20 women, (aged 54.1 ± 14.7 years) years formed the control group. Antioxidant enzymes, superoxide dismutase, and catalase activities in erythrocytes were examined. Results: An increased level of antioxidant enzymes was seen in the blood samples from patients with head and neck cancer after incubation with Pd (II) complex. In the group we obtained a statistically significant result p = <0.001. Discussion: That project may contribute to the development of new, more efficient head and neck cancer treatment strategies. In our opinion, the results can be used in the future to develop a valuable prognostic marker of the disease. This is important because the initial phase of cancer is asymptomatic. The search for factors involved in pathogenesis translates into economic benefits and makes therapy more effectiveness through the reduction of treatment expenses.
