Opis:
Introduction: During the COVID-19 pandemic, workload and physical and mental exhaustion became more extensive, especially among health care workers (HCWs). Material and Methods: This study involved 50 people aged 25 to 64, of whom 37 were women and 13 men. These HCWs were physiotherapists (48%), nurses (30%) and physicians (22%), all professionally active during the COVID-19 pandemic. The research was conducted between June and October 2020, using an on-line survey. The COPE, LBQ and ISI questionnaires were used. Results: Analysis of occupational burnout (LBQ) and its various aspects showed that the Deterioration of relations with clients (patients) was significantly higher among those with up to five years and between 15 and 24 years of experience than in the group with 25–35 years of experience. Sense of professional ineffectiveness and Disappointment were significantly higher (p %lt; 0.05) in the group with the most work experience. 30% of the medical workers surveyed obtained a result indicating subliminal insomnia (ISI) and 28% – clinical insomnia. Comparison of COPE and LBQ scores showed that Psychophysical exhaustion (LBQ) correlated negatively with Religious coping (p = 0.032). Deterioration of relations with clients (patients) (LBQ) correlated negatively with such strategies (COPE) as Active coping (p = 0.048), Planning (p=0.006), Positive reinterpretation and growth (p < 0.001). Sense of professional ineffectiveness (LBQ) correlated negatively with Acceptance strategies (p = 0.017) and Behavioral disengagement (p = 0.021). Disappointment correlated positively with the Positive reinterpretation and growth strategy (p = 0.024). Conclusions: The COVID-19 pandemic had an impact on the development of burnout amongst the HCWs surveyed, especially that related to psychophysical exhaustion, a sense of lack of effectiveness and a sense of disappointment. The sleep cycle was affected. Cognitive-behavioral oriented workshops are recommended when facing burnout.
Wprowadzenie: W trakcie trwania pandemii COVID-19 obciążenie pracą oraz fizyczne i psychiczne wyczerpanie były coraz większe, szczególnie wśród pracowników ochrony zdrowia (POZ). Materiał i metody: W badaniu wzięło udział 50 osób w wieku od 25 do 64 lat – 37 kobiet i 13 mężczyzn. Byli to: fizjoterapeuci (48%), pielęgniarki (30%), lekarze (22%), aktywni zawodowo w czasie pandemii COVID-19. Badanie przeprowadzono w okresie od czerwca do października 2020 r. w formie ankiety on-line. Wykorzystano kwestionariusze COPE, LBQ i ISI. Poczucie braku skuteczności zawodowej i Rozczarowanie były istotnie wyższe (p %lt; 0.05) w grupie z najwyższym stażem pracy. 30% ankietowanych pracowników medycznych uzyskało wynik ISI wskazujący na obecność bezsenności podprogowej, a 28% bezsenności klinicznej. Analiza korelacji pomiędzy wynikami COPE a LBQ wykazała ujemną korelację pomiędzy Wyczerpaniem psychofizycznym (LBQ) a Zwrotem ku religii (p = 0,032). Brak zaangażowania w relacje z klientem (LBQ) ujemnie korelował z takimi strategiami (COPE) jak: Aktywne radzenie sobie (p = 0,048), Planowanie (p = 0,006), Pozytywne przewartościowanie i rozwój (p < 0.001). Poczucie braku skuteczności zawodowej (LBQ) było ujemnie skorelowane ze strategiami Akceptacji (p = 0,017) i Brakiem zaangażowania (p = 0,021). Rozczarowanie dodatnio korelowało ze strategią Pozytywne przewartościowanie i rozwój (p = 0,024). Wnioski: Pandemia COVID-19 miała wpływ na rozwój wypalenia zawodowego badanych pracowników ochrony zdrowia, zwłaszcza wypalenia związanego z wyczerpaniem psychofizycznym, poczuciem braku skuteczności i poczuciem rozczarowania. Wpłynęło to na cykl snu. W obliczu wypalenia sugeruje się warsztaty poznawczo-behawioralne.

Calretinin-containing (CR+) GABAergic neurons in the dorsal part of hippocampal formation (HF), including the subi-culum, Cornu Ammonis (CA1-4), and dentate gyrus (DG) were visualized with immunocytochemistry. General distribution of CR+ cells was similar in each studying group. Olfactory bulbectomy caused significant increase in CR+ density in stratum oriens of CA1 and stratum moleculare of suprapyramidal blade of DG (three times, p<0.05 and twice, p=0.05, respectively), and tendency to increase in majority of other sub-regions of HF. CR+ cells were generally resistant to administration of amitriptyline as an antidepressant following bulbectomy, although the tendency of increase in CR+ cell density can be observed in CA1. Our findings indicate CR+ neurons site-specific response to bulbectomy model of depression. This could involve the trisynaptic pathway and temporo-ammonic tract by controlling other interneurons terminating on different compartments of principal cells.

Undoubtedly, serving as a police officer is associated with a high level of occupational stress. The stressfulness of this profession, which keeps increasing every year, results from several reasons, of which the most important ones include frequent participation in difficult and sometimes dramatic situations, endangering one’s own life and the lives of others, making quick decisions, bearing the burden of a potentially unjustified use of weapons, and exposure to trauma and other traumatic experiences of other people. The high level of stress related to the profession of a police officer is also associated with other factors, such as low wages, shifts, or paperwork. This paper looks at the notion and consequences of burnout among police officers on the example of the Krakow Constabulary. The study rests on a detailed survey of 110 officers based on the application of the ANOVA method of analysis of variance.

Opis:
Progressive environmental degradation results in an increase in the number of waters that do not meet the standards in force. Surface waters are particularly vulnerable to pollution because they are receivers of purified water and agricultural or industrial wastewater flow. In addition, the local increase in temperature and the increase amount and availability of nutrients associated with wastewater discharged improves the microbial growth and thus increase their quantity. The treated sewage must meet certain requirements regarding their physicochemical and biological parameters. However, the regulations do not require to check microbiological quality by treatment plants, so the purpose of the study was to determine the impact of discharge of purified wastewater by the "Warta" sewage treatment plant down to Warta river. The study was conducted in 2008-2016 at three collection points near the place of discharge of purified sewage from Warta SA sewage treatment plant. It has been demonstrated that the process of sewage treatment is not enough in terms of microbiological pollution because the water samples collected at the points behind the discharge site of the effluent into the river were characterized by increased abundance and microbiological diversity.

Opis:
Purified water daily discharged to surface water from local sewage treatment plants can cause illnesses people and animals in nearby areas. Sometimes they also contribute to the development of diseases in much bigger region range. Often the cause of such infections are pathogenic Listeria rods especially Listeria monocytogenes, which are not eliminated in the technological process of wastewater treatment carried out by local sewage treatment plants. Therefore, the purpose of the study was to investigate the influence of the sewage treatment plant on the presence of Listeria bacteria and to estimate the potential hazard resulting from its occurrence in the water of the Warta River. Research points were located on the Warta River before and after the discharge of purified sewage through the treatment plant, also a direct exit of purified wastewater was examined. Samples were filtered and then estimated the growth characteristics of typical colonies on the selected diagnostic media were estimated and isolated microorganisms were characterized. Samples were filtered and then it had been defining the growth characteristics of typical colonies on the selected diagnostic media, finally isolated microorganisms were described. Studies have shown that the local wastewater treatment plant has a strong influence on the microbial quality of the Warta River and has shown strong impurity with Listeria rods, including pathogenic strains. Bearing in mind the results obtained, it can be stated that direct or indirect contact with receivers of the water of purified sewage poses a real threat to the health and even life of humans and animals.

Opis:
The goal of this research project is to analyze children’s understanding of the concept of friendship by investigating symbolic representation in drawing and metaphoric expression in language. This research project is grounded in the conceptual metaphor theory (Lakoff & Johnson, 1980), in which metaphor is defined as a conceptual-linguistic mapping between a source and a target domain. It uses qualitative, ethnographic research based on Spradley’s (1979) theory stating that meanings are derived from symbolically coded concepts where X is a symbol and Y is a referent. The researchers in this study, one from the USA and one from Poland, asked a group of preschool children to draw pictures of their friends. When the children finished their drawings, the researchers asked them 4 questions: “What did you draw?” “Why are they friends?” and “A friend is like…”, “A friendship is like…”. The results demonstrate that preschool children have the cognitive ability to understand the concept of friend and even differentiate between friends and playmates. In the study, the children could determine the number of their real friends, and for most children in both countries, it was 1 or 2 friends. In the group of American children, friendship (X) had two basic meanings (Y): helping (YH) and playing (YP). In Poland, friendship meant playing (YP) and being together after school (YBT). The children in both countries associated friends (target domain) with (source domain) certain people (FP), character quality (FCH), activity (FA) and (FO) object/places. A comparison of the results demonstrates a difference in the number of friends the children claimed to have in Poland versus the USA. Additionally, the research showed that the American children drew only their friends without including themselves, while the Polish children included themselves in their pictures.

Plants have always played an important role in funeral customs. To understand their true meaning, close cooperation between the archaeologist and the archaeobotanist is needed, not only during the final interpretation, but from the very beginning, at the stage of collecting materials. In the article, plants’ identification, using both pollen and macroremainsanalysis, was described, based on one of the children’s burial from the Holy Trinity Church in Byszewo (18th/19th centuries). The filling of the coffin pillow consisted of numerous hop (Humulus lupulus) macroremains, the representation of which was very low in pollen sample. This is due to the fact that only female specimens of hop were inserted into the coffin. To determine the reason for using hops in funeral practices in Byszewo, ethnobotanical data was used. The following research indicates the need for the cooperation between two methods of plant identification. It will allow misinterpretations of botanical findings to be avoided

Gelsolin, one of a major actin-binding proteins, is involved in the regulation of actin cytoskeleton organization by its severing and capping activity towards actin filaments. Human colon adenocarcinoma cell line LS180 and its selected variants of different metastatic potential were used to check for a correlation between gelsolin level, its subcellular localization and the invasive capacity of cells. Based on immunoblotting experiments, a decreased level of gelsolin was detected in the most invasive 5W subline when compared to the parental cell line LS180. The intracellular distribution of actin filaments and gelsolin in colon adenocarcinoma cells was examined by confocal microscopy. In the 5W subline, unlike in the other examined cells, gelsolin was colocalized with filamentous actin at the cell periphery. In summary, in human colon adenocarcinoma cells, gelsolin level and its subcellular distribution seem to correlate with their metastatic potential.

Background: New-onset atrial fibrillation (NOAF) is one of the complications of acute myocardial infarction (AMI), and is associated with poor outcome. The aim of the study was clinical and laboratory assessment of patients with NOAF in AMI. Material and methods: This is a retrospective, single-centre study of AMI patients with NOAF, who were admitted to Clinical Centre of Cardiology of the University Clinical Centre in Gdansk, from January 2016 to June 2018. The medical history, echocardiography parameters, AMI localization and infarcted-related artery as well as laboratory parameters at the admission and at the moment of NOAF onset were taken into further analyses. Results: From 1155 consecutive AMI patients 103 (8.9%) with NOAF were enrolled into the study. A significant increase in C-reactive protein (CRP) and high-sensitive Troponine I (hsTnI) level, whereas significant decrease in potassium and hemoglobin level was observed at the moment of NOAF in comparison to admission. Conclusions: Our study suggests that markers of inflammation (CRP), myocardial necrosis (hsTnI), hemoglobin and serum potassium may be associated with NOAF in the setting on AMI. The aforementioned parameters are generally available and may be used as an inexpensive and rapid way to select patients who are at high risk of developing NOAF.

ObjectivesThe measurement of the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) is one of the most important methods for self-assessment of health, which makes it possible to identify irregularities in the physical, mental and social functioning. The aim of the research was to determine HRQOL using the Health Related Quality of Life Questionnaire for Children and Young People (the KIDSCREEN-52 questionnaire) – the instrument recommended by the World Health Organization – which makes it possible to distinguish groups of adolescents with a diversified subjective sense of the quality of life.Material and MethodsThe study involved a group of 871 adolescents, 411 boys and 460 girls, aged 13–16 years, residing in the Świętokrzyskie Voivodship. The method of a diagnostic survey was used in the research. The KIDSCREEN-52 questionnaire, which is an instrument for examining the HRQOL of adolescents, was employed in the study. The k-means clustering method was applied, which made it possible to establish 3 groups of adolescents with a different subjective sense of the quality of life.ResultsThree groups of adolescents with a diversified subjective sense of the quality of life (high, average, low) were identified using the KIDSCREEN-52 questionnaire. The subjective quality of life in the majority of the respondents was high, in particular in those living in rural areas. The surveyed boys with a high subjective quality of life showed a significantly higher self-esteem, acceptance and peer support than the surveyed girls.ConclusionsThe KIDSCREEN-52 questionnaire is an accurate and sensitive tool for assessing HRQOL. It allows identifying 3 groups of adolescents with a diversified subjective sense of the quality of life. It can form the basis for further diagnosis of the bio-psycho-social functioning of adolescents.

Background Concentration of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) might be useful in selecting patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF) who will benefit the most from pulmonary vein isolation. Material and methods We performed prospective cohort study among patients with PAF who had sinus rhythm prior to undergoing either radiofrequency ablation or cryoablation procedure. Blood samples were collected at the start of the procedure and 16-24 h after. TNF-alpha concentrations were measured. Follow-up data was obtained during a structured telephone interview and 24-hour ECG Holter monitoring 12 months after the ablation procedure. Results Thirty seven patients were enrolled. After 12-month follow-up 27 patients maintained sinus rhythm, 8 had recurrence of AF and 2 were lost to follow-up. There was no significant correlation between TNF-alpha concentrations in any of the samples and the recurrence of arrhythmia (for pre-procedural samples: 1.75 pg/ml vs 1.74 pg/ml; p=0.72; for post-procedural samples: 1.49 pg/ml vs 1.79 pg/ml; p=0.16). In patients who had a recurrence of AF, we observed a decrease in the periprocedural TNF-alpha concentration (-0.12 pg/ml vs 0.05 pg/ml; p=0.05). Conclusions Neither pre- nor post-procedural TNF-alpha concentrations are predictive of ablation outcome in patients with PAF. We observed a decrease in the periprocedural TNF-alpha concentration in patients who had AF recurrence.

The evaluation of skin penetration of active substances from topical preparations is a pre-clinical requirement in the pharmaceutical industry. While in vitro preparations of human or animal skin are frequently used the development of artificial lipophilic and hydrophilic membranes with similar properties to human or animal skin need to be developed. This preliminary study compared the in vitro permeation of niacinamide (vitamin B3), which is used as a model drug, across artificial hydrophilic and lipophilic membranes with iv vitro penetration across human skin. The experiments were carried out in Franz diffusion cells. Artificial membranes were filter paper impregnated with either collodium (hydrophilic), stearic acid, cetyl alcohol or cetyl alcohol + cholesterol (lipophilic). Acidic and neutral hydrogel and emulsion (pH 5.4 and 7.4) containing 0.5% of niacinamide were applied to membranes for up to 4 hours. Also, hydrogel and emulsion solvents gave similar results. In conclusion, these artificial membranes seem to be a promising alternative to human or animal skin.
