Opis:
Pilotage is considered as the most critical leg of navigation and a complex operation in maritime domain. In this paper, we argue that Distributed Situation Awareness (DSA) is an important construct in pilotage as the information required to carry out operations is distributed between agents and artefacts. We identify the central themes from the theory of DSA which are useful in describing modern day complex socio-technical systems. Further, based on the central themes, we propose guidelines for evaluating bridge teams involved in pilotage operations.

Pilotage operations require close interaction between human and machines. This complex sociotechnical system is necessary to safely and efficiently maneuver a vessel in constrained waters. A sociotechnical system consists of interdependent human- and technical variables that continuously must work together to be successful. This complexity is prone to errors, and statistics show that most these errors in the maritime domain are due to human components in the system (80 ? 85%). This explains the attention on research to reduce human errors. The current study deployed a systematic human error reduction and prediction approach (SHERPA) to shed light on error types and error remedies apparent in pilotage operations. Data was collected using interviews and observation. Hierarchical task analysis was performed and 55 tasks were analyzed using SHERPA. Findings suggests that communication and action omission errors are most prone to human errors in pilotage operations. Practical and theoretical implications of the results are discussed.

Maritime subsea operations have increased significantly in size and complexity during the last decades as a result of the advances in the offshore oil industry. Despite the fact that subsea operations can involve hundreds of personnel, working together with complex technology, limited research can be found regarding the operations in the available literature. This study aims to analyze a routine subsea operation using the Distributed Situation Awareness (DSA) framework and understand how the operators on board maintain their DSA in routine operations through a case study. In order to understand how the operation unfold in complex sociotechnical systems and how situational awareness (SA) is distributed across agents and artefacts, the theoretical framework of DSA can be useful as the focus is on the interactions at a systemic level. To achieve the research objectives, a combination of qualitative methods was utilized to illustrate DSA on board a subsea vessel. Initially an observation was conducted during a live subsea survey operation to capture the interaction between personnel and instruments. Furthermore, all observed personnel were subjected to retrospective interviews to elicit further knowledge of the operation. Finally, the data was analyzed according to the propositional network approach and Hierarchical Task Analysis (HTA). The result of this study portrays the SA of a subsea survey operation as propositional networks for the main phases identified in the HTA. The main findings of the study show a significantly difference in DSA among the Bridge personnel and personnel located in the Online Control Room (ONCR). Furthermore, it was found that the dynamic of the system allowed personnel to have different level of DSA without jeopardizing the overall operation. Finally, the summary of the findings provides a basic understanding of how a routine subsea survey operation unfolds.

This paper presents the outcome of a pre-project that resulted in an initial version (prototype) of an automated assessment algorithm for a specific maritime operation. The prototype is based on identified control requirements that human operators must meet to conduct safe navigation. Current assessment methods of navigation in simulators involve subject matter experts, whose evaluations unfortunately have some limitations related to reproducibility and consistency. Automated assessment algorithms may address these limitations. For a prototype, our algorithm had a large correlation with evaluations performed by subject matter experts in assessment of navigation routes. The results indicate that further research in automated assessment of maritime navigation has merit. The algorithm can be a stepping stone in developing a consistent, unbiased, and transparent assessment module for evaluating maritime navigation performance.

Simulator-based training has become an integral part of Maritime education, and its effectiveness hinges on the use of appropriate assessment protocols. Despite the existence of several subjective and objective assessment techniques, instructors face difficulties in selecting and implementing the best practices that fit different learning contexts. The contextualized utility of the available assessment techniques further complicates the contexts. This study adopts a systematic literature review approach to comprehensively analyse available assessment techniques employed in maritime simulator training and to elicit their relationship with the desired learning outcomes. The study also presents a nuanced understanding of the advantages and limitations of the identified assessment techniques. Further, the state-of-the-art of assessment methods is discussed along with a few proposals for the future considering both research and practical implications. The findings of this study are expected to provide valuable guidance to maritime instructors in selecting and implementing appropriate assessment techniques that align with desired learning outcomes in simulator training.

Automation transparency is a means to provide understandability and predictability of autonomous systems by disclosing what the system is currently doing, why it is doing it, and what it will do next. To support human supervision of autonomous collision avoidance systems, insight into the system’s internal reasoning is an important prerequisite. However, there is limited knowledge regarding transparency in this domain and its relationship to human supervisory performance. Therefore, this paper aims to investigate how an information processing model and a cognitive task analysis could be used to drive the development of transparency concepts. Also, realistic traffic situations, reflecting the variation in collision type and context that can occur in real-life, were developed to empirically evaluate these concepts. Together, these activities provide the groundwork for exploring the relation between transparency and human performance variables in the autonomous maritime context.

Maritime education and training (MET) has a long tradition of using simulator training to develop competent seafarers and relevant seafaring skills. In a safety critical domain like maritime industry, simulators provide opportunities to acquire technical, procedural and operational skills without the risks and expense associated with on-the-job training. In such training, computer-generated simulations and simulators with higher realism are inferred to better training outcomes. This realism, or the extent to which simulators replicate the experience of a real work environment, is referred to as the “fidelity” of a simulator. As the simulation technology develops, the maritime industry adapts to more advanced, higher fidelity simulators. However, the cost of a simulator generally increases with increasing fidelity, and thus practical and economic constraints must be considered. In this paper, we investigated two types of simulators on perceived skill development of the students at engine room simulation training. We compared the self-efficacy levels of 11 second year marine engineering students and their perceived skill development between two different fidelity engine room simulators. The result suggests that students have higher motivation and prefer to train with immersive training simulators compared to the traditional training. This article aims to add to existing knowledge on the influence of fidelity of simulators in training effectiveness in maritime education and training.

Wild vegetables can contribute to people’s food security and health. In northwest Pakistan, almost 40% of the households are classified as food insecure, due to increasing population and natural and man-made catastrophes. There is an urgent need to get an overview of still existing practices of wild vegetable use and to incorporate such knowledge into agricultural policies. The present study, therefore, aims to collect and analyze information on the most widely and commonly used wild vegetables in northwest Pakistan. Semistructured interviews were performed with 126 informants (26–78-year old) from all 24 districts of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province. Information on culinary and medicinal use, cooking methods, and growing and harvest season were collected. A rating scale was used to get the opinion on quality, abundance, and use frequency of wild vegetables. Information on trading was gathered on local and regional markets. Transect walks were done with key informants for specimen collection. A total of 25 wild vegetable species (21 genera, 13 families) were documented. Most of them are herbs (22 spp.). One third of the species needs processing or detoxification prior to cooking. Taste and food quality as perceived by the local people are the main driver for use frequency and commercialization. Length of availability varies from 2 to 7 months with Rumex dentatus and Vicia faba also available during the winter season. Overall, 21 spp. are also used medicinally, mainly for gastrointestinal diseases. Leaves are the preferred plant part for both vegetables and medicines. Nine species are sold in markets, Bauhinia variegata and Caralluma tuberculata throughout the whole province. Local communities in northwest Pakistan have a broad knowledge of local plant use, especially on wild vegetables and their adequate processing. The present study suggests that the most commonly used wild vegetables should be promoted to reinforce food safety and most of them may also be commercialized. Conservation priority has to be given to the commercially harvested Caralluma tuberculata, which is presently overexploited.

In this article, density functional theory has been used to investigate the structural and optoelectronic properties of PbZrO₃ (PZO) under pressure from 0 to 350 GPa. In order to achieve ground state structural stability, generalized gradient approximations has been utilized. By studying electronic properties, indirect band-gap nature of PZO appears to change at 15 GPa to direct band-gap. Optical analysis include under pressure responses of real and imaginary parts of dielectric function, optical conductivity, optical absorption coefficient, energy loss function, refractive index, reflectivity and extinction coefficient. Most of the results have been found to be consistent with literature. Study reveals that static dielectric constant and band-gap are in accordance with the Penn model which validates our computed results. Moreover, static dielectric constant and static refractive index directly increases with pressure. Material preserves its positive value of refractive index at all pressures and therefore, it is not a negative index metamaterial. Plasma frequency increases directly with pressure that destabilize the under study material. Our results could be very useful for developing novel optoelectronic devices based on PZO suitable to work under extreme conditions.
