Opis:
The role of various hard structures of fish and cephalopods as living archives is briefly reviewed, and the role of the cephalopod statolith as an archive of age is treated in more detail. The statolith deposition hypothesis is considered as a complete validation tool (in contrast to the more common partial validation). The hypothesis emphasises the role of crystallisation stabilisers (such as Sr) early on, reaction switchers (such as pH) which are the deposition engines, and regulators-linkers (such as proteins) which control runaway crystallisation and are responsible for species-specific shapes and other individual details. Implications of deposition-oriented approach and research for understanding of growth and application of growth studies are also discussed.

Opis:
An optical tomograph in which a tested object is illuminated from five directions has been presented in the paper. The measurements of luminous intensity after changing into discrete signals (0 or 1) in the detectors equipped with 64 optical sensors were subjected to reconstruction by means of the matrix algorithm. Detailed description of the measuring sensor, as well as the principles of operation of the electronic system, has been given in the paper. Optical phenomena occurring at the phase boundary while transmitted through the sensor wall and phenomena inside the measuring space have also been taken into account. The method of the sensor calibration has been analysed and a way of technical solution of the problem under consideration has been discussed. The elaborated method has been tested using objects of the known shape and dimensions. It was found that reconstruction of the shapes of moving bubbles and determination of their main parameters is also possible with a reasonable accuracy.

In the wake of the Brundtland report (1987) it was argued that 'development' ought to be able to accommodate 'sustainability'. The discussion of 'development' needed to be enlarged and a 'long view' taken of society/nature relations. During the last two decades this formulation has increasingly been called into question: critics of 'sustainable development' have argued that it is an oxymoron, and that development cannot accommodate sustainability, and there has been criticism from the skeptical Right and the Deep Green Left. Others have argued that both the scientific evidence of global environmental change and increasing globalization (both economic and cultural) suggest that it is possible to "re-tune" development along lines that are less energy and material intensive. However, the political and social implications of employing the idea of 'sustainability' have rarely been thought through. There has little attention to the implications of re-thinking sustainability for governance, security or ideas of justice. During the 1970s and 1980s environmental policy and regulation identified external risks (wildlife, effluents etc) which could be contained and repaired. The risks were seen as controllable. There was strong modernist impulse at work in delineating human responsibilities for nature. Since 1992, however, this confident, regulatory modernist impulse has been undermined. Floods, storms, habitat loss and droughts can be seen as immanent to the system (especially the climate system). They are internal risks. These doubts about control extend to new areas, notably the new genetics. This paper examines the direction of current thinking on sustainable development in the light of the intellectual inheritance prior to 1992, the date of the first Earth Summit, when 'sustainability' entered mainstream thinking about development.
Od czasu raportu Brundtland (1987) sugeruje się, że "rozwój" powinien być "zrównoważony", a dyskusja odnosząca się do rozwoju powinna uwzględniać szersze spojrzenie na relacje zachodzące pomiędzy poszczególnymi społecznościami a naturą. Podczas ostatnich dwóch dekad coraz silnie zaznacza się jednak krytyka tego stanowiska. Przeciwnicy "zrównoważonego rozwoju" twierdzą, że jest to oksymoron. Krytycyzm wyrażali również sceptycy z prawicowych i lewicowych organizacji Zielonych podkreślając, że zarówno dowody naukowe dotyczące globalnych zmian środowiskowych, jak i rosnąca globalizacja (zarówno ekonomiczna jak i kulturowa) dopuszczają możliwość "wyregulowania" rozwoju, poprzez wspieranie jedynie energio- i materiałooszczędności. Polityczne i społeczne implikacje wprowadzenia idei "zrównoważoności" rozpatrywane są znacznie rzadziej. Niewiele uwagi przykładano do kwestii zrównoważenia w odniesieniu do sfery rządzenia, bezpieczeństwa czy idei sprawiedliwości. W latach 70. i 80. polityka środowiskowa i regulacje określały ryzyko zewnętrzne (dzika przyroda, ścieki, etc.), które można powstrzymać czy zmienić. Ryzyko to postrzegano jako kontrolowane. Pojawił się silny modernistyczny impuls odnośnie nakreślenia odpowiedzialności człowieka za naturę, który jednak od 1992 roku został osłabiony. Powodzie, sztormy, degradacja środowiska naturalnego i susze można postrzegać jako immanentne dla systemu (szczególnie w układzie klimatycznym). Jest to ryzyko wewnętrzne. Te wątpliwości dotyczące kontroli rozprzestrzeniają się na inne obszary, szczególnie na współczesną genetykę. Artykuł przedstawia obecny stan refleksji prowadzonej wokół rozwoju zrównoważonego, prezentowany w świetle dziedzictwa intelektualnego sprzed 1992 roku - daty pierwszego Szczytu Ziemi, na którym pojęcie "zrównoważenia" wkroczyło do głównego nurtu myślowego dotyczącego kwestii rozwoju.

Opis:
Many regulations, with EU energy package as one of the most important, contribute to the growing role of RES in the general energy-fuel balance. Numerous advantages from the implementation of RES are also an important issue in the process of its development. Nevertheless, connecting numerous RES into the electrical grid causes its instability. Due to Renewables 2011 Global Status Report, RES have grown to supply an estimated 20% of global final energy consumption in 2010 and total global investment in renewable energy (RE) broke a new record in that year. The process of implementing RES into a grid is complex and demands fine management strategy. Local smart grids tend to be a solution for managing an increasing number of dispersed RES. The aim of this paper is to present management processes during implementiation of RES into a smart grid.

Echinochloa spp. are the most important weeds in rice fields. In this research Fusarium equiseti and Colletotrichum graminicola were isolated from these weeds and then their pathogenicity effects were compared on these weeds and five rice cultivars in a completely random design with three replications in greenhouse conditions. Fungi were inoculated on weeds and rice cultivars using a spore suspension consisting of 106 spore·ml-1 of distilled water. Results indicated significant effect of F. equiseti and C. graminicola on Echinochloa oryzicola and E. crus-galli. Also, these rice cultivars showed significant reaction to F. equiseti and C. graminicola. The results showed that in comparison between effect of F. equiseti and C. graminicola on Echinochloa spp., disease rating caused by F. equiseti on E. oryzicola and E. crus-galli was more than disease rating caused by C. graminicola and these species of weeds were more susceptible to F. equiseti, but C. graminicola created less damage on rice cultivars and these rice cultivars were more tolerant to this fungus.

In this study, mycelial compatibility grouping (MCG) of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum (Lib.) de Bary was determined in 15 infected potato fields in Bahar and Lelehjin, Hamadan, Iran. Among 193 isolates, 37 MCGs were identified and 67% were represented by single isolates observed at single locations. Within Bahar fields, 29 MCGs were identified and 15 MCGs were recognized in Lalehjin samples. MCGs 2, 6, 18 and 25 were collected at high frequency from multiple locations. The efficacy of Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA) amended with activated charcoal for identifying MCGs in this fungus was tested in doubtful reactions and proved to be an effective medium. The activated charcoal produced a black reaction area in incompatible interactions as well as a red reaction line in PDA amended with McCormick's red food coloring.

Opis:
A novel, simple and simultaneous synthesis-immobilization of nano ZnO on perlite (nZnO-P) as a photocatalyst for photocatalytic degradation of Acid orange 7 (AO7) in aqueous solution was investigated. The effect of operational parameters such as initial dye concentration, initial pH, flow rate, photocatalyst granule size, temperature and the kinetic of the removal of AO7 in terms of the Langmuir-Hinshelwood model in a designed semi batch packed bed photoreactor connected to an on-line sampling UV-Vis spectrophotometer was studied. The results showed that AO7 removal efficiency increased with nZnO-P using the designed setup and the proposed photocatalyst was more efficient than TiO2 as a standard catalyst. Our results confirmed the pseudo-first-order kinetics model. The values of the adsorption equilibrium constant, KAO7, the kinetic rate constant of surface reaction, kc, and the activation energy (Ea) were found to be 0.57 (mg.l-1)-1, 0.41 mg.l-1.min-1 and 11.44 kJ/mol, respectively.

Opis:
Aim of the paper is to demonstrate evolution of Electric Vehicles (EV) and their infl uence on the Smart Grid (SG). Starting from USA defi nition of the SG considering the fi fth- and sixth- properties of the SG: It accommodates all generation and storage options and it enables new products, services and markets. We can determine EV role in the SG operation. Contemporary we can distinguish following types of the EV: HEVS – hybrid electric vehicles with motor and use batteries with no using electricity from external source, Pure EVs – running on electric motor powered by batteries that are recharged by plugging in the vehicle, Plug-in PHEVs – can be charged with electricity like engine power EVs and run under engine like HEVs. The most interesting for electric power there are Pure EVs and PHEVs that are consumers and also kind of electricity storage devices (very important in SG). These types may be charged “in home”, using special station with diff erent time of charging; there is also considered charging during the time waiting for change of lights on road nodes (junctions). It is important to mention that EV development infl uence not only on SG, social- and climate- environment but also on development of new branch of industries producing equipment necessary for EV operation.
Celem niniejszego artykułu jest zaprezentowanie rozwoju pojazdów elektrycznych oraz ich wpływu na sieci inteligentne (Smart Grid). Według definicji sieci Smart Grid, zaproponowanej przez USA, piątą i szóstą właściwość tych sieci stanowiły odpowiednio: posiadanie możliwości generacji i magazynowania oraz udostępnianie nowych produktów, usług i rynków. Autorzy dążą do okre- ślenia roli pojazdów elektrycznych w operacjach sieci Smart Grid. Wyróżnić można następujące typy pojazdów elektrycznych: HEVs – pojazdy hybrydowe mające silnik i wykorzystujące baterie bez pobierania elektryczności ze źródeł zewnętrznych, EVs – pracujące na silniku elektrycznym zasilanym bateriami ładowanymi przez podłączanie pojazdu oraz Plug-in PHEVs – pojazdy, które można ładować tak jak EVs, ale pracujące jak HEVs. Najbardziej znaczące dla elektroenergetyki są pojazdy typu EVs oraz PHEVs, ponieważ występują one jednocześnie w roli odbiorcy, jak i pewnego rodzaju urządzenia magazynującego. Pojazdy te mogą być ładowane w budynkach za pomocą specjalnych stacji ładujących bądź w trakcie postoju, np. na skrzyżowaniu. Należy podkreślić, że rozwój pojazdów elektrycznych nie wywrze wpływu jedynie na sieci inteligentne, lecz także na środowisko naturalne, społeczeństwo oraz rozwój nowych gałęzi przemysłu wspierających pojazdy elektryczne.

Introduction and objective. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of per os administration of 3 various dosages of a Citrosept preparation (a grapefruit extract)to growing turkey hens on changes in their selected haematological and immunological blood indices. An attempt was also undertaken to select the most efficient dose of the preparation with respect to the mentioned indices in turkey hens. Materials and methods. The experiment was conducted on 180 turkey hens allocated at random to 4 groups, 45 birds in each group. Samples of their full blood were analyzed for haematological indices, such as red blood cell count (RBS), haemoglobin content (Hb), haematocrit value (Ht), and white blood cell count (WBC). Samples of blood plasma were assayed to determine the activity of lysozyme (chamber-diffusive method) and heterophils capability to reduce nitro blue tetrazolium (stimulated and spontaneous NBT test). Phagocytic activity of leucocytes against Staphylococcus aureus 209P strain was assessed and expressed as the percentage of phagocytic cells (% PC) and phagocytic index (PI). Results. The administration of the grapefruit extract to turkey hens with drinking water caused a significant increase in haemoglobin content in blood, as well as an increase in non-specific humoral immunity marker (activity of lysozyme) and non-specific cellular immunity marker (percentage of phagocytic cells; P ≤ 0.05). Conclusions. The results obtained enabled the positive evaluation of the advisability of applying the Citrosept preparation in the feeding of turkey hens at the age of 6–9 weeks. Among the doses examined, the most efficient with respect to the stimulation of the non-specific humoral and cellular immunity was the dose of 0.021 ml/kg of body weight.
