Opis:
Jus cogens raises a vital interest of judicature and doctrine of international public law. We may find different views and opinions on the problem of the existence of peremptory norms, as well as their content. On the basis of the analysisof the practice of international judicial bodies, the article constitutes an attempt to define the prerequisites of a jus cogens norm as well as it aims at determination of a current catalogue of peremptory norms. Moreover, this catalogue evolves over time and in future it might be expected that new jus cogens norms will be recognized by the international community.

Opis:
In the present work measurements of chloride concentrations were used to assess the variability of infiltration conditions and contributions of surface water and local groundwater to the discharge of wells at Krajkowo riverbank filtration site (western Poland). Tests were performed on samples from 26 wells located in a well gallery close to the River Warta. Due to higher chloride concentrations in river water in comparison with local groundwater, significant differences in concentrations in samples from individual wells were noted. In particular, lower chloride concentrations in 11 wells were recorded, which can be linked to the local occurrence of low-permeability deposits in the superficial zone; a locally higher degree of riverbed sediment clogging in the highly convex meandering zone, where strong erosion of the riverbed occurred, which in turn led to increased clogging; the occurrence of a more intensive groundwater inflow into the river valley due to water infiltration from a smaller river entering the River Warta valley, as well as unfavourable conditions for the infiltration of surface water to the lower part of the aquifer with a greater thickness. Differences in chloride concentrations observed were also used to quantify approximately river water contribution to the well production. The average contribution of the River Warta to the recharge of the entire well gallery was estimated at 59.8%.

Opis:
The recharge zone of an aquifer supplying the Tursko well-field (Poland), located in an area of sparse water resources, shows groundwater contamination manifested by high nitrate concentrations and pharmaceutical compounds. This study documents the steady deterioration of groundwater chemistry during one decade of groundwater exploitation, and analyses wastewater impact on the groundwater chemistry using pharmaceutical compounds as anthropogenic tracers, with focus on the influence of treated wastewater and drainage water. These waters infiltrate into groundwater from a drainage ditch located in the water supply aquifer’s recharge zone. It is shown that strongly contaminated water can deliver organic matter and nutrients to the groundwater, activating or intensiying denitrification. As a result, the nitrate concentration has decreased in the groundwater, while concentrations of denitrification products have increased. Associated process of oxidation of organic matter causes periodic exceeding of limits allowed for drinking water. The ability of pharmaceutical compounds to act as anthropogenic tracers shows that infiltration of wastewater is a significant factor influencing drinking groundwater quality.

Opis:
Cytotoxic activity is one of the major functions of Natural Killer (NK) cells and is a critical effector mechanism of innate immune responses against infected or cancer cells. A variety of assays have been developed to determine NK cell cytotoxic activity, however a receptor-based screening tool is still lacking. Here, we propose the CD25 receptor as a candidate for NK cell cytotoxicity marker. We have verified that there is a correlation between classic target cell induced cytotoxicity markers and the CD25 expression on NK cells. Non-adherent lymphocyte fractions pre-stimulated with Escherichia coli O55:B5 lipopolysaccharide were co-cultured with settled HeLa targets in a four hour long cytotoxic assay. The cytotoxic effect was evaluated by MTT reduction assay and quantification of soluble cytotoxicity markers (granzyme B, FasL, caspase-8, IFN-γ and IL-2) was done by ELISA. Lymphocytes were stained with anti-CD3-Cy-5, anti-CD56/CD16/Nkp46-FITC and anti-CD25-PE antibodies and analyzed by flow cytometry. We observed that the CD25 expression exclusively on the CD3-CD56+CD25+ NK cells was positively correlated with their cytotoxic function evaluated by the MTT test (r = 0.68), the upregulation of granzyme B (r = 0.89), IL-2 (r = 0.78) and IFN-γ (r = 0.57), however, it was not positively correlated with FasL and caspase-8. We conclude that the CD25 expression might serve as an in vitro receptor-based screening tool for NK cell activity.

Opis:
Aim: The study has been aimed at comparing the group of patients diagnosed with conduct disorders hospitalised at the Department of Adolescent Psychiatry of the University Hospital in Krakow in the period of 1990–1991 with the corresponding group of patients hospitalised in the period of 2014–2015, in terms of the clinical picture, family status and the frequency and characteristics of their hospital stays. Material and method: The medical records of patients hospitalised in the period of 1990–1991 and 2014–2015 diagnosed with conduct disorders were used as the research material. The records were analysed in terms of the demographic and hospitalisation data, the patients’ care status, their exposure to abuse as well as selected symptoms related to conduct disorders in adolescents. Results: The obtained results have demonstrated the number of hospital admissions due to conduct disorders to have increased over three times over the period analysed. Also, the medical records covering the period of 2014–2015 showed a statistically significant greater number of patients with an unstable care status, greater prevalence of suicidal attempts and greater prevalence of self-harming behaviours compared to the medical records covering the period of 1990–1991. Conclusions: The observed increased frequency of hospital admissions of adolescents with conduct disorders may be associated with the increased prevalence of impulsive self-destructive behaviours such as self-harm and suicidal attempts in this population. The decline in care stability (despite the lack of clarity concerning the extent and the nature of this phenomenon in a wider population) and the associated decreased efficiency of the care system in the case of a crisis such as exacerbating impulsive self-destructive behaviour in adolescents create circumstances in which interventional psychiatric hospitalisation becomes inevitable. In light of the obtained results and the preliminary hypotheses regarding their causes, an additional question arises regarding the efficiency and availability of outpatient mental health care, auxiliary mental health services for patients from the studied population and their families, who should be considered the forefront of the possible and necessary therapeutic measures to be taken.
Materiał i metoda: Materiał badawczy stanowiły historie chorób pacjentów hospitalizowanych w latach 1990–1991 i 2014–2015 z rozpoznaniem z kręgu zaburzeń zachowania i emocji. Wyniki: Uzyskane wyniki wskazują na ponad trzykrotny wzrost liczby hospitalizacji pacjentów z rozpoznaniem z kręgu zaburzeń zachowania i emocji w analizowanym okresie. Ponadto w latach 2014–2015 odnotowano istotnie statystycznie większą niestabilność sytuacji opiekuńczej pacjentów, większą liczbę prób samobójczych i większą liczbę samookaleczeń w porównaniu z latami 1990–1991.

Opis:
Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) bacteria are human pathogens causing symptomatic gastritis, peptic ulcer or gastric cancer. Little is known about the kinetics of immune responses in H. pylori infected patients because the initial moment of infection has not been identified. Various animal models are used to investigate the immune processes related to H. pylori infection. In this study we checked whether H. pylori infection in guinea pigs, mimicking natural H. pylori infection in humans, resulted in the development of specific immune responses to H. pylori antigens by measuring the proliferation of lymphocytes localized in mesenteric lymph nodes, spleen and peripheral blood. The maturity of macrophages and cytokines, delivered by monocyte-macrophage lineage or lymphocytes, were considered as mediators, which might influence the lymphocyte blastogenic response. The obtained results showed the activation of T cells localized in mesenteric lymph nodes by H. pylori antigens in H. pylori infected guinea pigs four weeks postinfection. The blastogenic activity of lymphocytes was shaped by their interaction with antigen presenting cells, which were present in the cell cultures during the whole culture period. Moreover, the balance between cytokines derived from adherent leukocytes including interleukin 8 - IL-8 as well as interferon gamma - IFN-γ, and transforming growth factor beta - TGF-β delivered by lymphocytes, was probably important for the successful proliferation of lymphocytes. The H. pylori specific lymphocytes were not propagated in peripheral blood and spleen of H. pylori infected animals. The modulation of immunocompetent cells by H. pylori antigens or their different distribution cannot be excluded.

Opis:
BackgroundWhen assessing physical activity (PA), particular attention should be paid to medical university students who are taught to be health care professionals (HCPs) responsible for maintaining health in humans. However, different studies have shown that HCPs exhibit the same unhealthy behaviors as the general population. This study analyzed PA among medical university students of different faculties and their adherence to current PA recommendations.Material and MethodsData from 216 medical university students of physiotherapy, dietetics and pharmacy, including males (N = 44) and females (N = 172), the mean age of 22.3±1.8 years, were collected. The International Physical Activity Questionnaire in its long form (IPAQ-LF) was used to assess and classify PA behaviors. The results were analyzed in accordance with World Health Organization recommendations regarding PA.ResultsOver 60% of all the students were classified as active during all-day activity. However, while analyzing PA in different domains, the same shares of all the students were still insufficiently active during leisure time, and so they did not meet the recommendation of >75 min/week of vigorous PA, >150 min/week of moderate PA or an equivalent combination. All the students self-reported PA mainly in the work and transport domains. Generally, physiotherapy students were the most active and performed PA with higher intensity.ConclusionsThis study revealed a low level of leisure time PA among the students, and no habit of regular PA. Some changes in medical education should be suggested to include physical education as a long-term subject in medical school curricula. Future research is needed to investigate the exercise barriers that students perceive, which can guide future interventions aimed at improving their PA, and thereby impact on the quality of health care which they will provide.
