Opis:
The objective of this study is to present the issues associated with insect pollination as an environmental service. Moreover, it presents the methods of estimating the value of pollination and the results of the research into that value. Research indicates a significant value of pollination – between 153 and 167 billion dollars in the world. Depending on the estimation method, the value of plant pollination by insects may vary. The differences reach as much as several dozen percent. The discrepancies result from different understanding of the term “value”, and in the case of cultivated plants – from significant diversification of the data on the impact of pollination on the crops (available in the subject literature). The literature is dominated by research in determining the value of pollination for cultivated plants. The research into the economic value of pollination for maintaining biodiversity is conducted at a very small scale.

The purpose of this paper is to determine the effect of insect pollinators on the volume of food production in Poland, and thus to identify their role in ensuring the food security of the country. The object of the study was related to major entomophilous crop plants, i.e. rapeseed, fruit plants, fruit shrubs and permanent crops: fruit and berry plantations. The analyses were based on data from the Polish Central Statistical Office, the Institute of Horticulture, and subject literature. The results of the study indicate that insect pollinators play a key role in fruit production (absence of pollinators may result in a crop yield reduction ranging between 50% and 90%) and a signifi cant role in rapeseed production (a possible yield reduction of approx. 20–40%). In terms of physical availability of food, Polish food security would be preserved even in the absence of insect pollinators. However, at the level of economic availability, food security would not be preserved without such pollinators, particularly in terms of fruit and food security associated with the consumption of properly balanced rations.
Celem pracy jest próba określenia wpływu owadów zapylających na wielkość produkcji żywności w Polsce, a przez to wskazania na ich rolę w zapewnieniu bezpieczeństwa żywnościowego kraju. Badania dotyczyły głównych uprawnych roślin entomofi lnych, tj. rzepaku, roślin sadowniczych oraz krzewów owocowych i plantacji trwałych. Analizy przeprowadzono na podstawie danych Głównego Urzędu Statystycznego RP, Instytutu Ogrodnictwa oraz literatury przedmiotu. Wyniki badań wskazują na decydującą rolę owadów zapylających w zbiorach owoców (brak zapylaczy może spowodować spadek plonów od 50% do 90%) oraz znaczną rolę w zbiorach rzepaku (możliwy spadek plonów w granicach 20–40%). Bezpieczeństwo żywnościowe Polski w sensie fizycznej dostępności żywności będzie zachowane nawet przy braku owadów zapylających. Nie będzie natomiast możliwości zachowania bezpieczeństwa żywnościowego na poziomie ekonomicznej dostępności żywności (dotyczy to zwłaszcza owoców) ani bezpieczeństwa żywnościowego związanego ze spożywaniem odpowiednio zbilansowanych racji żywnościowych.

Polymer-based capacitive humidity sensors emerged around 40 years ago; nevertheless, they currently constitute large part of sensors’ market within a range of medium (climatic and industrial) humidity 20-80%RH due to their linearity, stability and cost-effectiveness. However, for low humidity values (0-20%RH) that type of sensor exhibits increasingly nonlinear characteristics with decreasing of humidity values. This paper presents the results of some experimental trials of CMOS polymer-based capacitive humidity sensors, as well as of modelling the behaviour of that type of sensor. A logarithmic functional relationship between the relative humidity and the change of sensor output value at low humidity is suggested.

We present first-principles calculations of the zero field spin splitting of energy bands in wurtzite materials. Our calculations reveal that the huge electric fields originating from strong piezo- and pyroelecric character of nitrides do not increase the spin splitting of bands in nitride heterostructures. This implicates long spin lifetimes in quantum structures based on these materials and weak possibility of tuning with external electric field.

Opis:
Weighted least-squares method was applied to derive polynomials which approximate the transfer functions of relative humidity (RH) sensors. The formulae for typical cases were discussed. The exemplary results were compared to the calibration equations obtained by the ordinary least-squares method and those presented in datasheets, and the conclusions were drawn.
Metodę ważonych najmniejszych kwadratów zastosowano do wielomianowej aproksymacji funkcji przetwarzania sensorów wilgotności względnej (RH). Przedyskutowano wybrane za-leżności odpowiadające typowym przypadkom aproksymacji. Wyniki otrzymane dla wybranych sensorów RH porównano z równaniami kalibracyjnymi otrzymanymi zwykłą metodą najmniejszych kwadratów oraz podanymi przez wytwórców, i podano wnioski.

The paper presents basic information about photovoltaic cell operating principles and applied technologies. Statistical data that describes trends in photovoltaic generation development is reviewed. Information is analyzed that describes the sales of photovoltaic cells, increase in the installed capacity and development of the technology and prices. The paper comprehensively addresses the legal context of the development photovoltaics in Poland, starting from government plans for relevant programmes, and ending with an assessment of the most important regulations in EU and national law.
W artykule przedstawiono podstawowe informacje dotyczące zasad działania oraz stosowanych technologii ogniw fotowoltaicznych. Dokonano przeglądu danych statystycznych, opisujących tendencje rozwoju energetyki fotowoltaicznej. Przeanalizowano informacje opisujące sprzedaż ogniw fotowoltaicznych, przyrost mocy zainstalowanych, rozwój technologii oraz ceny. Artykuł obszernie porusza także kontekst prawny rozwoju fotowoltaiki w Polsce, wychodząc od rządowych zamierzeń programowych w tej mierze, na ocenie najważniejszych regulacji prawa wspólnotowego i krajowego kończąc.

Opis:
We study adsorption of the benzene molecule on the Si terminated (0001) surface of 4H-SiC by performing first principles calculations in the framework of density functional theory. We find out that chemical reaction leading to the chemisorption of benzene on the surface has endothermic character. The adsorbed benzene molecule is bounded to two surface Si atoms and it does not lose its integrity, however, it undergoes strong deformations and causes distortion of the substrate. We analyze also changes in the electronic structure caused by benzene adsorption.

We present the results of ab initio calculations of gas adsorption processes on graphene. Static density functional theory framework is used to obtain adsorption energies of several species on a Stone-Wales defected graphene monolayer. The Van der Waals interaction is taken into account by a semi-empirical correction. Sites closer to the defect are found to induce stronger adsorption compared to sites further away, where the graphene crystal structure is intact. The Car-Parrinello ab initio molecular dynamics simulations are performed at high temperatures. CH₃ is found to be stably physisorbed or chemisorbed at 300 K.

The dynamics of the methane, methyl, and carbon dioxide adsorption to the (001) surface of cubic magnesium oxide (periclase) has been studied within the ab initio molecular dynamics in the temperature range between 0 and 1000 K. For methane, neither chemisorption nor physisorption has been observed in the considered temperature range, whereas methyl group and carbon dioxide build chemical bond to the MgO surface at temperatures 350 K and 450 K, with adhesive energies of 0.218 and 0.935 eV, respectively.

We present studies of the morphology and charge distribution at the 4H-SiC/wz-GaN heteropolar junctions. Our investigations are based on the first principles calculations in the framework of the density functional theory where the interfaces between the SiC substrate and GaN layers are represented by means of a slab. These studies reveal possible charge compensation patterns at the interfaces that lead to charge redistribution from monopole to dipole character and increase the stability of the junctions. It turns out that the interfaces with C-Ga and Si-Ga bonds across the junction and reconstructions involving substitution of group IV elements into Ga layer are the most favorable energetically.

The classical and inverse linear calibration methods based on the regression of y on x and the regression of x on y, were applied to several humidity sensors. The predicted values for given values of the output value of sensors were calculated, and conclusions concerning the accuracy of prediction were drawn.
Zastosowano metodę klasyczną i metodę odwrotną kalibracji liniowej oparte, odpowiednio, na regresji y względem x oraz regresji x względem y do wyznaczenia równania prostej kalibracji dla kilku sensorów wilgotności oferowanych na rynku. Przedstawiono wyniki obliczeń wartości predykowanych wilgotności dla wybranych wartości sygnału wyjściowego sensorów oraz podano wnioski dotyczące dokładności predykcji.

In this paper we present a method of calculating third-order elastic constants C$\text{}_{ijk}$ and its application to zinc-blende nitrides AlN, GaN, and InN. Our approach is based on accurate ab initio calculations of both energy and stress as a function of applied strain. Ab initio computations are performed within density functional theory framework. To assess the reliability of the presented method, we compare our theoretical findings for GaAs with experimental results for C$\text{}_{ijk}$ available for this material.

We present first-principles studies of the zero field spin splitting of energy bands in typical III-V semiconductors. Our calculations reveal that the strain induces linear-k spin splitting of the conduction band in theΓ point, which is linear in strain, and determine the magnitude of the so-called acoustic phonon constant that characterizes the magnitude of the spin splitting. In addition, we show that optical phonons lead to spin-flip processes and we present quantitative results for the spin-phonon deformation potentials in GaAs. Most importantly, the calculations show that the linear-k spin splitting can be resonantly enhanced when bands cross in a particular point of the Brillouin zone. This resonant enhancement of the bulk inversion asymmetry coupling constant by more than one order of magnitude was observed in both valence and conduction bands and can be steered by the application of the external stress. This allows tailoring of the spin relaxation and spin precession of conduction electrons in nanostructures to a much larger extent than was hitherto assumed.
