Opis:
The role of various hard structures of fish and cephalopods as living archives is briefly reviewed, and the role of the cephalopod statolith as an archive of age is treated in more detail. The statolith deposition hypothesis is considered as a complete validation tool (in contrast to the more common partial validation). The hypothesis emphasises the role of crystallisation stabilisers (such as Sr) early on, reaction switchers (such as pH) which are the deposition engines, and regulators-linkers (such as proteins) which control runaway crystallisation and are responsible for species-specific shapes and other individual details. Implications of deposition-oriented approach and research for understanding of growth and application of growth studies are also discussed.

Opis:
The aim of this research was to answer the question if the seasonal cow’s bedding changes are indifferent to dairy production. The research was held in two different Wielkopolska farms which had very high milk productivity. In one of the farms, the cow’s beddings, were located indoor, and in the second one outdoor under the roof. The autumn’s change from sand into straw and spring’s from straw into sand are either indifferent to milk productivity or they have positive influence.

Opis:
The method of metal-assisted chemical etching produces a porous silicon layer. Palladium particles are deposited on both: multi-crystalline and Czochralski grown mono-crystalline Si wafers by immersing them in $PdCl_{2}$ solution for 1 to 3 min. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis of Pd clusters shows a decrease in Pd metal fraction by prolonged immersion time t from $F_{Pd}$ = 71.2% for t = 1 min to $F_{Pd}$ = 61.4% for t = 3 min due to Pd oxidation process. Porous silicon forms by metal-assisted chemical etching in a HF:$H_{2}O_{2}$ solution for 1 to 3 min. Photoluminescence of metal-assisted chemical etched samples exhibits the peak with a maximum of t at λ=650 nm independent of the etching time. Simultaneously, the intensity of the photoluminescence spectra strongly decreases for extended etching time t = 3 min. This behavior is attributed to increasing layer macroporosity, which strongly reduces amount of light emitting nanocrystallites.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to determine the effect of an organic form of mineral supplement containing copper, zinc and manganese on the concentration of these elements in the coat (hair) of Polish Konik horses. Possible impact of the rearing conditions of 24 Polish Konik foals (which originated from stables and nature reserves), their sex and duration of the supplementation on the coat’s mineral composition was considered. The research included 24 horses: 12 stabled (six fillies and six colts) and 12 captured in a nature reserve (seven fillies and five colts). Ten samples of fodder and 60 samples of coats were analysed. The influence of the rearing system on the concentration of elements in the coat was observed, for example stabled horses had a higher content of copper in the coat while the content of zinc and especially manganese was lower. All horses, both reared in a stable and from the nature reserve, showed higher copper concentrations in their coat (P ≤ 0.05) after supplementation with copper, while an increased amount of zinc was observed only in animals reared in a stable. All horses (both stabled and wild ones) demonstrated an evident change in the manganese content of their coat after supplementation with a chelate. The content grew significantly (P ≤ 0.01) with the supplementation time. An interaction between the sex and chelate supplementation time was observed only in the case of manganese administered to animals reared in a stable.

The paper focuses special attention on a project named CARE. The developers of the project is NosoiFighters team, which consists of students of the Cybernetics Faculty in Military University of Technology. The system is a very creative software solution that takes advantage of pioneering sociological theories, graph/networks theory and the last but not least most advanced technologies. It has a very practical purpose, in particular nowadays: countering infectious diseases, for instance HIV/AIDS, malaria, SARS, etc. The paper demonstrates how the system can help us to nail epidemics. CARE has enormous practical potential in regions such as Africa, where there are not enough medicines to treat all who are at risk.

Opis:
Extinct aurochs (Bos primigenius), accepted as the ancestor of domestic cattle, was one of the largest wild animals inhabiting Europe, Asia and North Africa. The gradual process of aurochs extinction finished in Poland in 1627, were the last recorded aurochs, a female, died. Some aspects of cattle domestication history and the distribution of aurochs genetic material among modern cattle breeds still remain unclear. Analyses of ancient DNA (aDNA) from bone sample deliver new genetic information about extinct wild aurochs as well as modern cattle phylogeny. DNA was extracted from a fragment of aurochs fossil bone found in the Pisz Forest, Poland. The sample was radiocarbon-dated to about 1500 yBP. The aDNA was used for Whole Genome Amplification in order to form a DNA bank. Auroch mitochondrial DNA sequences were amplified using sets of 41 primers overlapping the whole mtDNA, cloned and sequenced. The sequence of the whole mitochondrial genome was reconstructed and deposed in GenBank [GenBank:JQ437479]. Based on the phylogenetic analyses of the Bovine mitochondrial genomes, a phylogenetic tree was created. As expected, the tree clearly shows that the mtDNA sequence of the analyzed PWA (Polish Wild Aurochs) individual belongs to haplogroup P. In the course of the comparative mtDNA analysis we identified 30 nucleotide marker positions for haplogroup P and nine unique PWA differences compared to the two remaining haplotype P representatives. Our analysis provides the next step to the reconstruction of the demographic history of this extinct but still exciting species.

Opis:
The nanoparticles of CH3NH3PbBr3 hybrid perovskites were synthesized. These perovskite nanoparticles we embedded in polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) in order to obtain the composite, which we used as light converter for silicon solar cells. It was shown that the composite emit the light with the intensity maximum at about 527 nm when exited by a short wavelength (300÷450 nm) of light. The silicon solar cells were used to examine the effect of down-conversion (DC) process by perovskite nanoparticles embedded in PMMA. For experiments, two groups of monocrystalline silicon solar cells were used. The first one included the solar cells without surface texturization and antireflection coating. The second one included the commercial cells with surface texturization and antireflection coating. In every series of the cells one part of the cells were covered by composite (CH3NH3PbBr3 in PMMA) layer and second part of cells by pure PMMA for comparison. It was shown that External Quantum Efficiency EQE of the photovoltaic cells covered by composite (CH3NH3PbBr3 in PMMA) layer was improved in both group of the cells but unfortunately the Internal Quantum Efficiency was reduced. This reduction was caused by high absorption of the short wavelength light and reabsorption of the luminescence light. Therefore, the CH3NH3PbBr3 perovskite nanoparticles embedded in PMMA matrix were unable to increase silicon solar cell efficiency in the tested systems.
