Opis:
Assemblages composed of 11 ammonium min er als, mainly sulphates and chlorides, were recorded from four burning coal-dumps (BCD) in the Upper Silesian Coal Ba sin. Most of them are newly recorded from Poland. Minerals were identified using PXRD and SEM with EDS analyses. Salammoniac, NH4Cl, and tschermigite, (NH4)Al(SO4)2ź12H2O are the most common species on the BCD studied. Kremersite, (NH4,K)2[FeCl5(H2O)], is rare and coexists with members of the ammonioalunite–ammoniojarosite series. Boussingaultite, (NH4)2Mg(SO4)2ź6H2O, and more rarely clairite, (NH4)2Fe3(SO4)4(OH)3ź3H2O, and mascagnite, (NH4)2SO4, ac company numerous Mg, Al, Fe and Ca sulphate minerals. These usually occuras very fine admixtures forming coatings, small nodules or porous masses and were found on the BCD surface close to gas vents. Also a massive sulphate crust was found in the deeper part of the BCD nearby the fire zone. This crust is composed mainly of an hydrous sulphates: godovikovite, (NH4)(Al,Fe)(SO4)2 , and very minor sabieite, (NH4)Fe(SO4)2, and efremovite, (NH4)2Mg2(SO4)3, which were transformed into different hydrated sulphates in the outer zone of the crust. The fibrous or dendritic habit of many ammonium minerals, and the vesicular texture of some sulphate aggregates, point to their crystallization from the gas phase. Some ammonia miner ls may also have developed through hydration of prevlously formed phases or precipitated from locally formed aqueous solutions due to cooling or evaporation. The appear ance of ammonia minerals on BCD can be a useful indicator of the presence of underground fires.

Opis:
An occurrence of twelve recently formed secondary copper minerals (SCM) was observed in underground workings of an abandoned Cu-As-Au mine in Radzimowice. The minerals, mainly sulphate species, were identified using Powder X-Ray Diffraction (PXRD), scanning electron microscope with energy dispersive spectroscopy system (SEM-EDS) and electron microprobe analysis with wavelength-dispersive spectrometry system (EPMA-WDS) methods. The SCM of Radzimowice form the following assemblages: paragenesis I is characterized by langite, posnjakite, brochantite and devilline. These minerals crystallise directly from pH 6.0–7.0 mine waters. Paragenesis II also comprises hydrous copper sulphates (HCS), and in addition contains native copper, cuprite, ferrihydrite and gypsum. Secondary HCS mainly crystallise as products of reactions of sulphate-rich mine waters with native copper and cuprite. The pH of these waters varies from ~5.0 to 6.0. The III paragenesis is dominated by woodwardite, associated with variable amounts of chalcoalumite and amorphous Cu-Al sulphates. Accumulations of woodwardite occur in the zones where Al- and sulphate-rich acid mine waters (pH ~2.5–3.0) mix with neutral waters (pH 6.5–7.0). Paragenesis IV is rare, dominated by chrysocolla, coexisting with small amounts of mottramite and goethite. This assemblage formed as a result of mobilization of silica released during decomposition of rock-forming aluminosilicates attacked by acid mine waters

Opis:
Samples of Lower Devonian vertebrate-bearing placoderm sandstones collected in a quarry at Podłazie Hill in the Holy Cross Mountains, central Poland, were found to contain numerous white and brownish aggregates of an unknown composition. Powder X-Ray Diffraction study has shown them to comprise plumbogummite group minerals (PGM). Gorceixite is most common, usually forming compact/porous aggregates. They are either found in voids within the quartz-rich zircon-, muscovite- and biotite-bearing matrix, or as a complete replacement after bone remnants. Goyazite aggregates are similar but rarer. Strontian crandallite is found as tiny zoned crystals closely associated with compact gorceixite (in the sandstone matrix) or as cores of fine-grained gorceixite aggregates (within the bones). All of the PGMs are enriched in Ce and La with two analyses marginally within the compositional field of florencite-(Ce). Ca enrichment, elevated F content and abundance of goyazite within the bone replacement suggest the primary bone apatite group as the source of these elements. Tuffites and claystones associated with the sandstones are probably the source of Ba and Sr, while Pb is possibly derived from local Devonian mineralisation.

Raman investigation of Peierls-Hubbard (TTF$\text{}^{+}$)$\text{}_{2}$ dimers in (TTF)$\text{}_{2}$Mo$\text{}_{6}$O$\text{}_{19}$ and (TTF)$\text{}_{2}$W$\text{}_{6}$O$\text{}_{19}$ salts have been performed. It was found that the resonance enhancement of Raman intensity of intramolecular vibration modes exists only when the frequency of excitation light fits to the localised electron transition, however, the resonance enhancement of intermolecular modes occurs when the frequency of excitation light corresponds to the charge transfer transition.

We present the hole-related electrical activity of the InAs quantum dots embedded in the n-type GaAs. We performed our experiments with the use of the Laplace and conventional deep level transient spectroscopies combined with the above GaAs band-gap illumination. We observed that depending on temperature and electric field the hole emission process is an interplay between the pure thermal emission and tunnelling processes. The tunnelling was quantitatively described by a simple model of the potential barrier.

Opis:
Introduction and Objective. Nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) signalling pathway plays a central role in the regulation of cellular response to stress. The aim of the study was to investigate the ability of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), CdTe quantum dots (CdTeQDs) or their binary mixtures to stimulate NF-κB binding in HepG2 cells. A dual luciferase reporter system was used to investigate NF-κB binding. Materials and method. Cells were transiently transfected with a firefly luciferase reporter system and Renilla luciferase expression plasmid as a transfection efficiency control. Twenty- four hours after transfection, the cells were treated with nanoparticles (10 µg/cm3 AgNPs, 10 µg/cm3 AuNPs, 3 µg/cm3 CdTeQDs) or with 10 ng/cm3 TNFα as a positive control. Six hours later, the cells were lysed and the activities of the luminescence of firefly and Renilla luciferases were measured using the Dual-Luciferase Reporter Assay System. Results. AuNPs and CdTeQDs alone significantly inhibited NF-κB binding activity. Co-treatment with AgNPs and CdTeQDs resulted in an additive effect, whereas the presence of AgNPs diminished the inhibitory effect of AuNPs. Interestingly, significant antagonism was observed between AuNPs and CdTeQDs, suggesting a similar mode of action. Conclusions. Comparison of the NF-κB binding activity induced by the mixtures of NPs suggests that in some cases NF-κB binding activity might differ from that observed for the NPs alone.

Opis:
One of the ways to decrease thermal conductivity is nano structurization. Cobalt triantimonide (CoSb3) samples with added indium or tellurium were prepared by the direct fusion technique from high purity elements. Ingots were pulverized and re-compacted to form electrodes. Then, the pulsed plasma in liquid (PPL) method was applied. All materials were consolidated using rapid spark plasma sintering (SPS). For the analysis, methods such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) with a laser flash apparatus (LFA) were used. For density measurement, the Archimedes’ method was used. Electrical conductivity was measured using a standard four-wire method. The Seebeck coefficient was calculated to form measured Seebeck voltage in the sample placed in a temperature gradient. The preparation method allowed for obtaining CoSb3 nanomaterial with significantly lower thermal conductivity (10 Wm–1K–1 for pure CoSb3 and 3 Wm–1K–1 for the nanostructured sample in room temperature (RT)). The size of crystallites (from SEM observations) in the powders prepared was about 20 nm, joined into larger agglomerates. The Seebeck coefficient, α, was about –200μVK–1 in the case of both dopants, In and Te, in microsized material and about −400 μK−1 for the nanomaterial at RT. For pure CoSb3 , α was about 150 μVK−1 and it stood at −50 μVK−1 for nanomaterial at RT. In bulk nanomaterial samples, due to a decrease in electrical conductivity and inversion of the Seebeck coefficient, there was no increase in ZT values and the ZT for the nanosized material was below 0.02 in the measured temperature range, while for microsized In-doped sample it reached maximum ZT = 0.7 in (600K).
