    Opis:
    Research in termoacoustics began with the observation of the heat transfer between gas and solids. Using this interaction the intense sound wave could be applied to create engines and heat pumps. The most important part of thermoacoustic devices is a regenerator, where press of conversion of sound energy into thermal or vice versa takes place. In a heat pump the acoustic wave produces the temperature difference at the two ends of the regenerator. The aim of the paper is to find the influence of the material used for the construction of a regenerator on the properties of a thermoacoustic heat pump. Modern technologies allow us to create new materials with physical properties necessary to increase the temperature gradient on the heat exchangers. The aim of this paper is to create a regenerator which strongly improves the efficiency of the heat pump.

    The paper presents results of hearing loss measurements provided for 81 young people (from 16 to 25 years old). The main aim of the work was to find the influence of headphones of the types used (closed, semi-open, open and in-ear) on the hearing losses. The first part of the research was to answer questions about the influence of: time of listening, loudness of music, other noise exposures as well as the type of the headphones used. It turned out that all factors mentioned above influence thresholds of hearing but the found dependencies are not explicit. The greatest hearing losses were observed for people who work as sound reinforcement engineers and, moreover, no influence of the headphone types was found for them. It turned out that the use of in-ear headphones causes the greatest hearing losses for some subjects (thresholds shifted up to about 20 dB HL at 4 kHz). The daily time of a listening also affected the hearing thresholds. It was found that for users of in-ear and close headphones, an average time of musical exposure of three hours causes the hearing loss of 10-15 dB HL at higher frequencies. The use of open as well as semi-open headphones has no influence on the hearing damage. Thus it would be stated that these kinds are safety in use. Almost 15% of the investigated young people have their thresholds shifted up at higher frequencies, particularly at 4 kHz, which means that they have the first symptoms of a permanent hearing damage.

    The conception of sustainable development has been implemented into practice in numerous economic sectors, including forestry. Forest ecosystems are extremely important in the global ecological system, therefore maintenance and appropriate management of forest resources according to sustainable development principles have engaged a great deal of attention. The concept of sustainable forest management (SFM) encompasses three dimensions: ecological, economic and social. A powerful tool to promote SFM are criteria and indicators. The aim of the article was evaluation of SFM in Poland, using one of the methods proposed by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). According to data available, Polish forestry has a number of advantages: Poland has avoided the problem of deforestation, forest area has been permanently increasing, there has been observed improvement of forest health and vitality as well as a significant share of forests has carried out protective functions with no impact on timber production. Poland’s model of SFM is an adaptive process of balancing the ever-changing set of economic, environmental and social expectations. Such a complicated undertaking requires constant assessing and adjusting forest practices, in response to new circumstances, scientific advances and societal input.

    Opis:
    Electron spin resonance (ESR) studies of two antibiotics, Cefaclor and Clarithromycin, have been performed in order to investigate concentration and dynamics of free radicals generated in these compounds due to thermal sterilization. For Cefaclor three combinations of temperature and heating time have been applied: 160°C, 170°C, 180°C for 120 min, 60 min, and 30 min, respectively, according to the pharmaceutical sterilization norm. Clarithromycin has been heated at 160°C for 120 min. The ESR lineshape has been investigated versus microwave power ranging from 2.2 mW to 70 mW. Electron spin-spin relaxation time has been estimated from the ESR lineshape analysis. Concentrations of radicals generated due to different sterilization procedures have been compared with the purpose to select the best sterilization scheme.

    Opis:
    Automatic recognition of mammographic images in breast cancer is a complex issue due to the confusing appearance of some perfectly normal tissues which look like masses. The existing computer-aided systems suffer from non-satisfactory accuracy of cancer detection. This paper addresses this problem and proposes two alternative techniques of mammogram recognition: the application of a variety of methods for definition of numerical image descriptors in combination with an efficient SVM classifier (so-called classical approach) and application of deep learning in the form of convolutional neural networks, enhanced with additional transformations of input mammographic images. The key point of the first approach is defining the proper numerical image descriptors and selecting the set which is the most class discriminative. To achieve better performance of the classifier, many image descriptors were defined by means of applying different characterization of the images: Hilbert curve representation, Kolmogorov-Smirnov statistics, the maximum subregion principle, percolation theory, fractal texture descriptors as well as application of wavelet and wavelet packets. Thanks to them, better description of the basic image properties has been obtained. In the case of deep learning, the features are automatically extracted as part of convolutional neural network learning. To get better quality of results, additional representations of mammograms, in the form of nonnegative matrix factorization and the self-similarity principle, have been proposed. The methods applied were evaluated based on a large database composed of 10,168 regions of interest in mammographic images taken from the DDSM database. Experimental results prove the advantage of deep learning over traditional approach to image recognition. Our best average accuracy in recognizing abnormal cases (malignant plus benign versus healthy) was 85.83%, with sensitivity of 82.82%, specificity of 86.59% and AUC = 0.919. These results are among the best for this massive database.

    Opis:
    The main features of the Cloud Computing system developed at IFJ PAN are described. The project is financed from the structural resources provided by the European Commission and the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education (Innovative Economy, National Cohesion Strategy). The system delivers a solution for carrying out computer calculations on a Private Cloud computing infrastructure. It consists of an intuitive Web based user interface, a module for the users and resources administration and the standard EC2 interface implementation. Thanks to the distributed character of the system it allows for the integration of a geographically distant federation of computer clusters within a uniform user environment.
