Opis:
The Reserve Dury, Tuchola Pinewoods, Poland, includes five depressions with no outflow filled up with biogenie sedi- s q ments. They undergo terrestrialization processes to a high degree. In four of the basins there are still some open water areas surrounded by floating mire with raised and transitional bog plants. For the needs of protection service officers some palynological and geological research were carried out. All the geological cores were described in detail following the Troels-Smith system. The deepest core Dury I was selected for pollen analysis. Ten Local Pollen Assemblage Zones (L PAZ) show the history ofregional and local plant communities. On the basis of two air photographs, modem dynamics of floating mire in four basins were evaluated. The results allow us to correlate the geological layers, to describe the Late Glacial and Holocene succession of plant cover at Dury I site, and to show the stages of filling-in of basins with lacustrine sediments and peat.

We in ves ti gated sed i ments of three Sphag num peatland-lake eco sys tems lo cated in Tuchola for est, both in mo raine (Ma³e Leniwe near Rekowo) and outwash plain (Dury and Rybie Oko) land scape. Geo log i cal cross-sec tions were stud ied for each ba sin. Char ac ter is tic fea ture of these eco sys tems is the pres ence of float ing mats en croach ing the lakes and de po si tion of highly hy drated sed i ments be low the float ing mat. Prin ci pal con di tions fa vour ing the de vel op - ment of peatland-lake eco sys tems are (1) lo ca tion of the lake in a sandy, non-cal car e ous catch ment over grown by co - nif er ous for est, (2) steep ness of the lake ba sin, what pre vents emerged macrophytes suc ces sion and (3) the depth of the ba sin sig nif i cantly ex ceed ing 10 m to avoid com plete in fill ing of the lake ba sin. The de vel op men tal path way in the Dury I ba sin in di cates a shift in lake en vi ron ment from neu tral to acid one. Af ter ini tial de vel op ment of Charophytes, Potamogeton and Najas ex panded, which later on, were suc ceeded by Sphag num due to acid i fi ca tion of the lake wa ter. Ini tial stages of the de vel op ment of the lakes were de ter mined mainly by allogenic fac tors, whereas in later stages autogenic fac tors (de vel op ment of float ing mat and peat acid i fy ing the lake wa ter) played fun da men tal role.

Opis:
Bia³owie¿a in Po land is a very fa mous re gion in Eu rope (be cause of its pri me val for est and bi son pop u la tion), but its en vi ron men tal his tory is poorly known. This ar ti cle shows the re sults of palynological anal y sis, macrofossil anal y sis and geo log i cal set tings of two mires in the Bia³owie¿a For est. The pol len di a grams show changes of the veg e ta tion cover from the youn ger part of the Late Gla cial un til the pres ent time. The rel a tive time scale is based on palynostratigraphy and com par i son to pub lished re sults of other sites from the ad ja cent re gions. Dur ing the Late Gla cial two stages of the veg e ta tion suc ces sion were re vealed: steppe and for est dur ing the Alleröd pe riod and tun dra-like veg e ta tion during the Youn ger Dryas. The Ho lo cene his tory con sists of five stages of plant cover de vel op ment. The spe cial fea tures of the Bia³owie¿a For est are con di tioned by two main fac tors: low de gree of anthropogenic im pact and in flu ences of con ti nen tal cli mate and bo real zone, stron ger than in the other re gions of Po land.
