Opis:
Rheology of viscoelastic fluids is a complex phenomenon. Full blood is an example of a body fluid of non-Newtonian character with pronounced viscoelastic properties. Blood flow in the circulatory system depends not only on the physical and physico-chemical properties of blood but also on the structure and properties of the vascular system. Blood viscosity is one of the most important factor determining the blood flow. Its value depends on the shear rate, hematocrit, erythrocyte aggregability and deformability, and on the plasma viscosity and composition. In the course of the investigation we utilized oscillatory methods, called also dynamic mechanical analysis. The technique principle is based on the measurement of the amplitude and phase of oscillations of the sample subject to a harmonic force with certain amplitude and frequency. The results of dynamic mechanical analysis were used to determine the viscoelastic properties of blood samples. We performed also the standard flow curve measurements of the blood plasma samples, that is shear stress as a function of shear rate in the rotary mode. All measurements were performed by means of a Contraves LS-40 rheometer on blood samples taken from two groups of patients. One group contained patients after heart attack, while the second one - after cerebral infarction. In none of the groups the patients were in an acute state. Information obtained from oscillatory measurements indicate increased erythrocyte aggregability in both groups of patients.

Opis:
The aim of the current work was to analyze the influence of alternating magnetic field on the viscoelastic properties of blood in vivo in patients with lasting pain problems. Oscillatory techniques, also called the dynamic mechanical analysis, have been used in the current work to study the viscoelastic properties of blood. The blood samples were collected from patients of a neurological ward complaining about spinal cord and lower limbs pain. Altogether 25 patients took part in the study. A blood sample was collected from each patient twice: before the magnetostimulation and after five treatments. For each blood sample, the hematocrit value was measured using the standard method. Plasma viscosity and the complex whole blood viscosity were measured by means of a rotary-oscillating rheometer Contraves LS40. Magnetic field was generated by the instrument Viofor JPS and the magnetostimulation treatments were performed using different programs. The analysis of the results included estimation of the hematocrit value, plasma viscosity, complex whole blood viscosity and its components: viscous and elastic viscosity at four chosen amplitudes of the shear rate as a function of the applied treatment program. The results obtained in the study suggest that rheological properties of blood change depending on the applied magnetostimulation program.

Opis:
The activated sludge process of the digestate liquors after chemical separation was conducted using a 10 L lab-scale sequencing batch reactor (SBR) and a 0.50 m3 pilot-scale SBR independently (with pH control). Due to the relatively high concentration of free ammonia (FA), clear inhibitory effects of the digestate liquors on the nitrifying bacteria were observed. The adaptation of the activated sludge to the toxicity was evaluated with the trends of ammonia uptake rate (AUR) and nitrate utilization rate (NUR). The lab-scale AUR values decreased from 5.3 to 2.6 g N/(kg VSS·h) over time after the addition of digestate liquors (5–10% of the reactor working volume), indicating an apparent FA inhibition on the nitrification process in the FA concentration range of 0.3–0.5 mg N/L. The pilot-scale AUR values increased from 1.8 to 3.6 g N/ (kg VSS·h) in the first two weeks and then decreased to 2.4 g N/(kg VSS·h), showing a lag of the inhibition on the nitrifying bacteria at the FA concentration ≈ 0.15 mg N/L. The lab-scale NURs increased from 2.6 to 10.4 g N/(kg VSS·h) over time, and the pilot-scale NURs increased from 1.0 to 4.0 g N/(kg VSS·h) in a similar pattern. The clear dependence of both the lab- and pilot-scale NURs on time indicated the adaptation of the heterotrophic biomass to the digestate liquors. Ethanol – used instead of fusel oil – was found to be a more efficient external carbon source for better adaptation of the activated sludge under unfavorable conditions.

Opis:
Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women. The effectiveness of treatment depends on early detection of the disease. Computer-aided diagnosis plays an increasingly important role in this field. Particularly, digital pathology has recently become of interest to a growing number of scientists. This work reports on advances in computer-aided breast cancer diagnosis based on the analysis of cytological images of fine needle biopsies. The task at hand is to classify those as either benign or malignant. We propose a robust segmentation procedure giving satisfactory nuclei separation even when they are densely clustered in the image. Firstly, we determine centers of the nuclei using conditional erosion. The erosion is performed on a binary mask obtained with the use of adaptive thresholding in grayscale and clustering in a color space. Then, we use the multi-label fast marching algorithm initialized with the centers to obtain the final segmentation. A set of 84 features extracted from the nuclei is used in the classification by three different classifiers. The approach was tested on 450 microscopic images of fine needle biopsies obtained from patients of the Regional Hospital in Zielona Góra, Poland. The classification accuracy presented in this paper reaches 100%, which shows that a medical decision support system based on our method would provide accurate diagnostic information.

The paper provides a preview of some work in progress on the computer system to support breast cancer diagnosis. Diagnosis approach is based on microscope images of the FNB (Fine Needle Biopsy) and assumes distinguishing malignant from benign cases. Studies conducted focus on two different problems, the first concern the extraction of morphometric parameters of nuclei present in cytological images and the other concentrate on breast cancer nature classification using selected features. Studies in both areas are conducted in parallel. This work is devoted to the problem of feature selection from the set of determined features in order to maximize the accuracy of classification. Morphometric features are derived directly from a digital scans of breast fine needle biopsy slides and are computed for segmented nuclei. The quality of feature space is measured with four different classification methods. In order to illustrate the effectiveness of the approach, the automatic system of malignancy classification was applied on a set of medical images with promising results.

The paper presents an active vibration control system based on low dynamic stiffness of suspension. Using a simple two degrees-of-freedom system a few basic concepts of lowering suspension dynamic stiffness are presented. Through reducing the dynamic component of force between the protected subsystem and remaining part of the system, considerable vibration suppression is achieved. Linear and nonlinear algorithms are proposed. In the case of nonlinear control algorithm, the sufficient link between the protected subsystem and the remaining part of the system necessary to change the position of the protected subsystem is maintained. Experiments described in the paper cover two different cases. In the first case, the suspension operated as the passive suspension, while in the second case, the active reduction system was included. The results are presented graphically.

Poprawność procesu segmentacji w dużym stopniu decyduje o możliwości wykonania skutecznych pomiarów cech morfometrycznych jąder komórkowych i w konsekwencji dokonania właściwej diagnozy. W artykule przedstawiono hybrydowy algorytm segmentacji oparty o konkurencyjne sieci neuronowe i adaptacyjne progowanie.

Opis:
Flysch deposits of the Ropianka Formation (Wiar and Leszczyny members; Skole Nappe) at Wola Rafałowska include two different sediments that contain exotic pebbles, cobbles and boulders. The first one is a graded conglomerate that contains mostly cobbles of sandstones, gneisses, Štramberk-type limestones, volcanic rocks, pegmatites and ferruginous siltstones. The second one is a pebbly mudstone that contains clasts of sandstones, stone coal, grey mudstones, volcanic rocks, schists, limestones, marls, black mudstones, conglomerates, volcaniclastic rocks and quartz gravels that are floating within a muddy matrix. Genesis of the conglomerate is unclear because it shows features typical of debris flows (poorly sorted, matrix- to clast-supported, large amount of cobble to boulder fraction) as well as high density turbiditic currents (indistinct normal gradation, small amount of cohesive material, crushed clasts that suggest interaction between grains during transportation and at least partly turbulence during flow). The pebbly mudstone represents typical debris flow deposits (large amount of cohesive material, matrix-supported, poorly sorted, lack of grain gradation and traction structures that suggest laminar flow). Limestones occurring in both exotic-bearing sediments show different Upper Jurassic–lowest Cretaceous facies of a carbonate platform, which was involved in the source area of the Skole Basin, along with its basement. They can be interpreted as deposits of: 1) platform-margin reefs and a platform slope: a) partly silicified coral boundstone, b) microbial-coral boundstone, c) silicified sponge-microbial boundstone grading into peloidal-ooidal grainstone with bioclasts, and d) strongly silicified limestone with intraclasts and bioclasts; 2) deeper, platform slope to toe-of-slope area – bioclastic wackstone; 3) inner platform, including: a) partly silicified wackstone with peloids, small intraclasts and bioclasts, and b) microbial bindstone. Moreover, some exotic clasts are built of Albian–Cenomanian wackstone with abundant sponge spicules and planktonic foraminifers, which are interpreted as deeper shelf sediments. Taking into account the geometry of thrust sheets from the site of the exotic-bearing sediments to the edge of the Skole Nappe, along the most probable transportation path, including tectonic/erosional reduction and different variants of slope inclination, the distance of the mass flows attained at least 25–97 km from the shelf edge.

Opis:
Two simultaneous experiments were carried out in a breeding farm of New Zealand White rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus f. domesticus) to determine the feasibility of replacing coccidiostats with garlic and oregano preparation. The research took place during June and July, the period of the greatest threat of coccidiosis caused by Eimeria spp. (Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae). In one investigation, 40 rabbits aged 1–3 months were divided into four groups of ten animals: Group A being a control which received no coccidiostats in feed, Group B receiving the coccidiostat Baycox in water once at weaning, Group C receiving the coccidiostat robenidine in feed, and group D receiving herbal extracts in feed. In the second trial, six mated females were allocated equally to three groups analogous to A, C, and D above during pregnancy and lactation. Bulk stool samples were collected from each group of rabbits at weekly intervals for coproscopic analysis, and the production results of the animals were recorded. In the young rabbits, both the faecal coccidia oocyst counts and body weight gains were more favourable in group D than the remaining groups. Also, the female rabbits of group D were the least infected. The results demonstrate that garlic and oregano feed additives exert a positive influence on the level and course of coccidia infection, with regard to maintaining a good level of animal productivity, and these herbal extracts appear to have potential value in coccidiosis prophylaxy.
