Opis:
In this paper we describe the development of a novel markerless motion capture system and explore its use in documenting elder exercise routines in a health club. This system uses image contour tracking and swarm intelligence methods to track the location of the spine and shoulders during three exercises — treadmill, exercise bike, and overhead lateral pull-down. Validation results show that our method has a mean error of approximately 2 degrees when measuring the angle of the spine or shoulders relative to the horizontal. Qualitative study results demonstrate that our system is capable of providing important feedback about the posture and stability of elders while they are performing exercises. Study participants indicated that feedback from our system would add value to their exercise routines.

Opis:
The key difference between amniotes (reptiles, birds and mammals) and anamniotes (amphibians in the broadest sense of the word) is usually considered to be the amniotic egg, or a skin impermeable to water. We propose that the change in the mode of lung ventilation from buccal pumping to costal (rib-based) ventilation was equally, if not more important, in the evolution of tetrapod independence from the water. Costal ventilation would enable superior loss of carbon dioxide via the lungs: only then could cutaneous respiration be abandoned and the skin made impermeable to water. Additionally efficient carbon dioxide loss might be essential for the greater level of activity of amniotes. We examine aspects of the morphology of the heads, necks and ribs that correlate with the mode of ventilation. Anamniotes, living and fossil, have relatively broad heads and short necks, correlating with buccal pumping, and have immobile ribs. In contrast, amniotes have narrower, deeper heads, may have longer necks, and have mobile ribs, in correlation with costal ventilation. The stem amniote Diadectes is more like true amniotes in most respects, and we propose that the changes in the mode of ventilation occurred in a stepwise fashion among the stem amniotes. We also argue that the change in ventilatory mode in amniotes related to changes in the postural role of the epaxial muscles, and can be correlated with the evolution of herbivory.

Opis:
Recently, new material of the peculiar tetrapod Sclerothorax hypselonotusfrom the Middle Buntsandstein (Olenekian) of north−central Germany has emerged that reveals the anatomy of the skull and anterior postcranial skeleton in detail. Despite differences in preservation, all previous plus the new finds of Sclerothorax are identified as belonging to the same taxon. Sclerothorax is characterized by various autapomorphies (subquadrangular skull being widest in snout region, extreme height of thoracal neural spines in mid−trunk region, rhomboidal interclavicle longer than skull). Despite its peculiar skull roof, the palate and mandible are consistent with those of capitosauroid stereospondyls in the presence of large muscular pockets on the basal plate, a flattened edentulous parasphenoid, a long basicranial suture, a large hamate process in the mandible, and a falciform crest in the occipital part of the cheek. In order to elucidate the phylogenetic position of Sclerothorax, we performed a cladistic analysis of 18 taxa and 70 characters from all parts of the skeleton. According to our results, Sclerothorax is nested well within the higher stereospondyls, forming the sister taxon of capitosauroids. Palaeobiologically, Sclerothorax is interesting for its several characters believed to correlate with a terrestrial life, although this is contrasted by the possession of well−established lateral line sulci.

Silica sol-gel glasses doped with Eu$\text{}^{3+}$ ions were obtained by different preparation techniques. The absorption, emission and excitation spectra of the obtained glasses were measured in the range of 77-300 K. The energy level diagrams of Eu$\text{}^{3+}$ ions were derived. An intensity analysis of f-f transitions was performed. In particular, polymeric structure behaviour of europium compounds entrapped in silica gels glasses was temperature controlled during the preparation of glasses. Their optical properties were investigated.

Opis:
A filter system is presented which allows the reduction of the concentration of ultrafine particles in vehicle cabins to very low levels. The original ventilation system is switched to the recirculation mode and all cabin intake air is supplied via a retrofitted filter system. Tests with a variety of different vehicles (from passenger cars to coaches) show the efficiency of the system. Filters incorporated in present ventilation systems remove large particles, for example pollen, but usually are inefficient for removing very small particles. This is demonstrated by Fig. l, where the particle number concentration outside and inside a car is plotted during a journey near Zurich. It is obvious that the concentrations inside and outside are more or less identical. All windows were closed during this measurement. Tests with a number ofdifferent all cars showed similar results. The filters included in today 's ventilation systems usually cannot remove nanoparticles, and so vehicle cabin indoor and outdoor nanoparticle concentrations are more or less identical. The nanocleaner, consisting of a very effident filter and a high performance blower, allows reduction of the particle concentration in the cabin from several hundreds of thousands or millions per cc. to a few thousand per cc., equivalent to remote woodland, the total exposed dose being reduced by some two orders of magnitude.

Opis:
Hospital length of stay (LOS) and readmissions continue to be expensive and unexpected events following colorectal surgery (CRS) whether patients follow enhanced recovery pathways or traditional care. Predictors of these adverse events could facilitate identification and optimization of CRS patients. The aim of the study was to examine the impact of white blood cell count (WBC) and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels as predictors of delayed recovery or hospital readmission following CRS. Material and methods. Patients undergoing laparoscopic or open abdominal colorectal surgery by a single surgeon were managed using standardized enhanced recovery pathways. Those with postoperative day 2 CRP and white blood cell values were evaluated. Outcomes included 30-day hospital readmission rates and postoperative length of hospital stay. Results. CRP values were available for 193 patients (86 Male, mean age 58.6 years). Ninety-nine patients had surgery for colon cancer, 23 for Crohn’s disease, 19 for ulcerative colitis, 31 for diverticulitis and 18 for other reasons. Twenty patients (10.4%) were readmitted to the hospital within 30 days of surgery. POD2 CRP accurately predicted short length of hospital stay (p< 0.01). Average CRP was 6.3 in the LOS of < 3 days or less, and 11.7 in patients with LOS >4 days. The mean CRP of the readmission and non-readmission groups was 11.8 and 9.9, respectively (p=0.29). The average POD 2 WBC of the readmission and non-readmission groups was 10.6 and 9 respectively (p=0.01). Conclusion. A low POD2 CRP level was correlated with a shorter LOS, but it did not predict readmission. Conversely, POD2 WBC, and the difference in WBC from baseline were associated with readmission. These markers may be useful indicators to predict suitability of early discharge in an ERP. Further evaluation in prospective trials is warranted.

κ-(BEDT-TTF)$\text{}_{2}$I$\text{}_{3}$ is an electronically extreme two-dimensional organic metal with a superconducting transition at around 4 K. In magnetic fields above 12 T the effective mass, as obtained from the temperature dependence of the amplitudes of Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations, is magnetic field dependent as long as the magnetic field is arranged perpendicular to the conducting planes. In contrast to this, by turning the magnetic field by 27° or even only 9° the observed effective mass (as obtained from Shubnikov-de Haas and de Haas-van Alphen measurements) is field independent. We suppose that the occurrence of anyons at temperatures below 1 K in fields above 12 T is the reason for the observed field dependence of the effective mass.

Opis:
The Fermi surfaces and effective masses of (BEDO-TTF)$\text{}_{2}$ReO$\text{}_{4}$(H$\text{}_{2}$0) and κ-(BEDT-TTF)$\text{}_{2}$I$\text{}_{3}$ were investigated by Shubnikov–de Haas (SdH) and de Haas–van Alphen (dHvA) measurements in magnetic fields up to 27 T in the temperature range from 0.5 K to 4.2 K. Two small closed pockets (0.7% and 1.5% of the first Brillouin zone) are observed in (BEDO-TTF)$\text{}_{2}$ReO$\text{}_{4}$(H$\text{}_{2}$0) corresponding very well with two cross-sectional areas of the Fermi surfaces obtained for a hole and an electron pocket from tight binding calculations. In contrast, in κ-(BEDT-TTF)$\text{}_{2}$I$\text{}_{3}$ two relatively large closed sections (13% and 85% of the first Brillouin zone) of the Fermi surfaces are observed, again confirming the tight binding calculations. For κ-(BEDT-TTF)$\text{}_{2}$I$\text{}_{3}$ in magnetic fields above 12 T the effective mass for the larger orbit, as obtained from the temperature dependence of the SdH-oscillation amplitudes, is magnetic field dependent as long as the field is arranged perpendicular to the conducting planes (Θ = 0°). In contrast, from dHvA measurements - which were performed by turning the magnetic field by 27° with respect to the SdH experiments - the observed effective mass is field independent. We suppose that the occurrence of anyons at temperatures below 1 K and in fields above 12 T might be the reason for the observed field dependence of the effective mass in the SdH investigations under the special angle 0°.
